Automatic Transmission problems of the 1999 Honda Accord - part 1

92 problems related to automatic transmission have been reported for the 1999 Honda Accord. The most recently reported issues are listed below.

1 Automatic Transmission problem

Failure Date: 03/14/2012

Over the last week I have been experiencing the car suddenly turning off. . . . No rpm's, no speed. . . While I am still in drive (automatic transmission). In viewing various websites, this is now becoming a common occurrence. . . And it extremely dangerous. Although headlights still work, power steering is no longer available. . . So I must hurriedly shift into n to glide to the side of the road. The car does not restart right away. This has occurred at intersections, on the highway (at 70 mph) and while going 20 mph. There was a recall issued on the ignition for this type of problem in/around 2002-2003. I received this late. . . But did go to the dealer and have it replaced in 2009 (Honda recall #02v120000). After experiencing this problem recently, I have gone online to see countless numbers of other Honda Accord owners who have been experiencing exactly the same problems. . . . Even after having the recall filled. Evidently, the replacement part has been failing. . . Or it was not the fix to begin with. This has was a very popular model. . And there are sure to be hundreds of thousands of these on the road. . . About to run into something when the power fails. I am going to the dealership to get this resolved. . . But it is incumbent upon your organization to have this issue reviewed. . And a solution available. . . Asap. Please look into this. . . . I have never experienced such a frightening problem while driving. Thank you.

Dear sir / madam - Honda in USA has intentionally dropped a large number of vehicles from its list of recalls/ fix needed to save the costs and maximise their profits. This case is one of them. My Honda - 1hgcg565xxa091504 is facing all issues similar to ones recalled from 1999-02 models. First the ignition switch issues last year and now the transmission issues. I called Honda and they said its not part of re-call while everyone knows these were part of re-calls so why was this vehicle dropped from the recall database ? how many more vehicles were dropped from the list and why ? I think the issue is not related to age but something else and needs investigation. Now it makes me wonder how many vehicles they include and what they drop from re-calls as cost saving measure ? thank you ! ravendra bhardwaj 920-574-3220 4727 north brookridge lane unit # c appleton, WI - 54913.

3 Automatic Transmission problem

Failure Date: 01/20/2011

1999 Honda Accord ex. Transmission. Car jerks forward, losses power, accelerates. Thousands of complaints on the internet, why no recall? there is a defect in the manufacturing yet nothing is done!! why can a car manufacturer get away with installing defect parts which are a safety hazard and the NHTSA does nothing about it!!.

4 Automatic Transmission problem

Failure Date: 01/11/2011

I bought this car new in 1999 while working as a salesman for a Honda dealership. Its always been well maintained as it is the only transportation I have. I no longer work at the dealership but my little boy needs a way to get to various activities as well as school. We depend on this machine and Hondas reputation to get things done. Around 76000 miles the transmission started to shift hard and not want to go into gear. After checking around various shops and the internet I was surprised to find out that so many other owners of 1999-2002 Accords had the same problems or worst. Some with only 50000 miles had to be replaced. I'm pretty sure this is an american Honda deal as the japanese people would back up their products. Once again we get screwed by our fellow greedy americans. I will not be buying another Honda product be it a lawnmower, car, motorcycle, generator or paper bag for that matter. I will also warn everyone I know by internet and carrier pidgeon about american Honda and their lack of ethics. What goes around comes around!.

The contact owns a 1999 Honda Accord lx. In November of 2008, the transmission was replaced at 14,000 miles. Recently, the contact noticed that the transmission was not shifting correctly while driving 30 mph. The dealer stated that the transmission needed to be replaced again. The manufacturer stated that the mileage exceeded the warranty and they will not assist. The cost for a new transmission would be $2,630. The failure and current mileages were 141,000.

8 Automatic Transmission problem

Failure Date: 06/21/2008

The transmission of my 99 Honda Accord ex v6 is behaving erratically and is creating a hazardous situation on the roads as the car suddenly jerks and speeds up or slows down as the transmission shifts erratically without any control. At times the car just locks up into 2nd or 3rd gear on the freeway. I believe this is a serious safety issue for others and for my family. After doing some research, I notice that a lot of other car owners have had or having similar experiences with this model and make of car. Honda has issued a recall on the transmissions of other Accords for model year 2000 - 2003, however I understand that even for the 1999 year Accord, it has the same transmission problems as have come up on the 2000-2003 model years because it is the same transmission make.

9 Automatic Transmission problem

Failure Date: 01/12/2008

I have a 1999 Honda Accord lx with a 4 cylinder vtec engine. 1-12-08 while driving at lower speeds--typically 30 to 45 mph the car will jerk and change gears when not needed. At highway speeds the car stalls and I have to shift to neutral to restart. Update: may 2008 and I have no reverse gear at all. After reading all the complaints I would really like to know why Honda has not put a recall on these 1998 and 1999 transmissions. Why? does someone really have to die before they fix their own problem? I am calling Honda in the morning and if I don't get satisfactory results I would like to start a negative campaign against Honda. This is crazy and I want answers.

10 Automatic Transmission problem

Failure Date: 10/12/2007

Car won't start and maintenance light came on. Tow it to a Honda dealership found to the transmission's fault. Honda won't cover it under their recalls for 2000 models, because it is a 1999 model.

11 Automatic Transmission problem

Failure Date: 10/06/2007

Since first purchased this 99 Accord has been to the shop on 5 different occasions for hard shifting into 1st and 2nd. Was told by Honda mechanic that was how it was supposed to shift. Still having troubles with slipping, and hard shifting and occasionally down shifting when going 70mph, car will whine loudly and you can feel the transmission down shift. Was told I needed to replace transmission.

12 Automatic Transmission problem

Failure Date: 10/10/2006

A few weeks ago I was driving and my transmission started to shift erratically through 1st,2nd,and 3rd without a change in speed. Later that same day the transmission would not shift into the following gear resulting in the rpm's to increase follow by it jamming it into gear. The car must no be replaced with a used or new transmission and I was quoted $3000+ to get this done. After alot of reading around and investigating this problem I have learned that this is very common and the 00-01 Accords have a recall for the exact same transmission. My car has 155k miles on it but I have all the service records and car has been very well maintained. I just think it is outrageous that there is no way for Honda to split the cost at the least.

13 Automatic Transmission problem

Failure Date: 05/18/2006

Transmission will not shift properly into gear, it was slow in shifting. When ever this happened engine would rev.

14 Automatic Transmission problem

Failure Date: 11/09/2005

My 99' Honda Accord would slip gears and jerk a lot when I would put it in gear or stop at a stop light and then proceed to go again. After a day of driving I took my car to the dealership and the said my automatic transmission had gone out completely and that they see it happen to my make and year of car all of the time. I had to replace the transmission and take a hit of three thousand dollars to get my car functional again. It amazes me that there is still not a recall for this but almost everyone who owns these cars has to replace the transmission.

15 Automatic Transmission problem

Failure Date: 10/16/2005

One day while driving down a busy 3 lane highway my Honda would not go forward any more. No matter how hard I pressed the gas it would no longer accelerate. I could put the car in neutral or reverse, but in drive I could not get it to go above 10 mph. I immediately recognized that it was the transmission and took it to a transmission place who told me Honda has an extended warranty for 98-2000 Accords under 100,000 miles, and they will replace your transmission. Since my car only had 80,000 miles, I called the service station, made an appointment and told them that it was the transmission. They told me okay, but there would be a $95 fee if it wasn't the transmission. They called me later that day, and said my VIN# didn't match the recall, so sorry. I called american Honda, and they said I should not have been given that information, and there was nothing they could do. I stated so what you are telling me is that in 98,99 & 00, you put bad transmissions in your Accords, I have a bad transmission in my Accord, but I'm not covered??? to which they replied yes.

16 Automatic Transmission problem

22 Automatic Transmission problem

Failure Date: 09/14/2004

I was driving my mom's 1999 Honda Accord ex v6 home last night around 11:00 pm. As I was approaching the exit and proceeded to decelerate from 65mph, the car violently downshifted several times causing me to lose control of the car. A large tractor-trailer which was behind me was narrowly able to avoid rear-ending (or running me over!) by switching lanes. My life flashed before me as I thought this was the end of my life. Fortunately, I survived, however, I have a nasty case of whiplash. After doing my research, I've found that the transmissions used in the 98-2002 Accords v6 have a faulty carrier bearing which brakes and ruins the innerds of the whole transmission. After calling Honda USA, I was told tough luck, and was sarcastically told that if I expected them to pay for replacement, I shouldn't hold my breath. Regardless of the extrordinary inflated replacement cost of $4800. 00, the NHTSA must open a defect investigation. Although the 2001-2002's were "recalled," the 98-99's with the exact same transmissions have not. I fear for the lives of all those individuals with these cars - especially if they cannot afford the outrageous cost to replace Honda's faulty transmissions. This is truly an injustice!.

23 Automatic Transmission problem

Failure Date: 07/27/2004

While driving at any speed automatic transmission didn't shift properly from the first to the second gear. Vehicle was taken several times to the dealership, but problem recurred.

1999 Honda Accord rebuilt transmission. The vehicle did not shift properly before the 36k mile warranty ran out.

27 Automatic Transmission problem

Failure Date: 07/01/2004

I was driving on the freeway when all of a sudden my car felt as if it were in neutral. The transmission went out on the freeway. The car was at about 95k miles, but this seemed very early for a transmission to go out. I got the transmission rebuilt, which cost me about $1600. Filing this complaint after a few years, but I recently heard the 1998 Honda Accords are having a recall. Mine is a 1999 Honda Accord.

28 Automatic Transmission problem

Failure Date: 06/20/2004

1999 Honda Accord lx, car has 100,000 miles and the transmission is gone. I was advised by the dealer that it will cost $5500 to replace. This is unheard of with a Honda. After doing research on the internet I found many complaints about Honda's transmission and it isn't just the Accord, it is several other models. What is going to be done about this?.

29 Automatic Transmission problem

Failure Date: 06/17/2004

The transmission in my Accord went out and was unsafe to drive. The car would suddenly shift into neutral while driving or stopped. When stopped at a stop light, the car would suddenly accelerate in gearing and car would jump forward while even on the brake. If the car was placed into reverse, if on a slight hill, the car would roll forwards or backwards before catching gears and acting the proper way. This has happened repeatedly over the course of a few weeks. Failed transmission in 2 differnent late 1990s Honda cars. The first being a 1998 Honda civic hx coupe with vortech engine and the second being a 1999 Honda Accord 4dr ex v6 (vortech) engine. Tranmission failure between 80k and 110k miles. Found other people with similar problems with their Hondas.

30 Automatic Transmission problem

Failure Date: 06/07/2004

Transmission on my 1999 Honda Accord lx has been slipping for quite some times. I am the second owner, having bought the car from the company I worked for. Perfectly maintained, with mainly highway miles. My transmission is now out completely; when it went out, my 4 year old son and I had to drive back home, in reverse. Now I am stranded at my home in the country, 20 miles from town. I am a single father and I now have to rely on my parents to take me places as I currently cannot afford to pay $4-$5k to replace my transmission. I don't understand why the recall was only done to the year 2000 vehicles when it is very obvious that the problem was prevelant in the 1999 models as well.

31 Automatic Transmission problem

Failure Date: 06/04/2004

As the transmission locked while driving at 60 mph, my car was turned to idel and almost causing an accident. I took my 99 Accord v6 to the dealership , they said that a new transmission to be replaced, which would cost $5200 and paying out my pocket . My major concern was safety for those driving this type of car.

32 Automatic Transmission problem

Failure Date: 05/11/2004

Vehicle hesitated and jerked. Consumer made contact with the dealer, and was told that transmission was not covered under warranty.

33 Automatic Transmission problem

Failure Date: 05/10/2004

My transmission locked at 65 mph almost causing an accident. I took my 99 Accord to the dealership , they said it needs a new transmission that would cost $2500, which now has to pay out my pocket . The Honda has only 93k. My mother in laws taurus has 140000, and is still running fine. It's a 1997. How does a 1997 taurus outlast a 1999 Accord? if this is the case that I have to now worry about when I buy a Honda, then I mind as well invest in a Toyota camry in the future.

34 Automatic Transmission problem

Failure Date: 05/04/2004

I have noticed a few wet spots on my floor of my garage so I crawled under car to look. I noticed fluid coming out from the transmission on the driver's side where the axle goes throught the axle seal into the transmission. I took the car to exclusive Honda /Acura in omaha ne. They checked the car over and found excessive play in the driver's side output shaft (axel). They advised me I would need a new transmission. The car is a 1999 Accord that has been maintained According to manual and only has 58000 miles. I have also noticed and erratic shift that is very unsafe while driving.

35 Automatic Transmission problem

Failure Date: 04/16/2004

While driving 50 mph the vehicle slowed down. Consumer later learned that the transmission failed.
