Automatic Transmission problems of the 1999 Honda Accord - part 2

92 problems related to automatic transmission have been reported for the 1999 Honda Accord. The most recently reported issues are listed below.

36 Automatic Transmission problem

Failure Date: 03/23/2004

Complete failure of automatic transmission in 1999 Honda Accord ex 3. 0 coupe with only 70,000 miles.

37 Automatic Transmission problem

Failure Date: 02/26/2004

The transmission in my 1999 Honda Accord ex v-6 failed on February 26, 2004. The car has 66,800 miles on it. It does not make sense to me why there has not been an extended warranty implemented on this model year as there has been on the 2000-2001 Accord and the '99-'01 odyssey. After speaking with the shop foreman at my Honda dealer and him revealing to me that they perform approximately 3-5 transmission replacements each week on the Honda Accord('98-'01), I thought it highly suspect that nothing has been done to rectify the prolem to other years in this model.

38 Automatic Transmission problem

Failure Date: 02/16/2004

The automatic transmission does not shift correctly. The problem I am having is that the engine speeds up and then the transmission shift into gear. The causes the tires to break loose causing the car to loose traction and when the tires regain their grip on the road the car darts out into traffic.

39 Automatic Transmission problem

Failure Date: 02/15/2004

While pulling out into a roadway at a hurried pace to avoid oncoming traffic, my '99 Accord would not accelerate and the rpm's just increased. An oncoming vehicle noticed that I was not getting out of the way and slammed on his brakes. Fortunately, before an impact occured, my Honda violently slammed into gear and I got out of the way of the other vehicle, but the acceleration was so sudden I was not able to turn. The Accord impacted the curb, causing tire and rim damage. The transmission is progressively getting worse and I am dismayed to find that Honda knows the transmission is defective, yet will do nothing to help '99 owners. Honda needs to recall all these transmissions, not just the 2000/01 because they are a threat to driver safety (as I have experienced). I have always liked Honda's cars but may consider another vehicle if Honda allows their bottom line to endanger customer safety.

40 Automatic Transmission problem

Failure Date: 01/23/2004

While driving 20 mph, the automatic transmission did not shift properly. The consumer was informed that the new transmissions have updated carrier bearings. The original transmission had defective carrier bearings which spread metal debris throughout the transmission and caused the failure. The consumer sent a petition letter but did no received any notification from odi whether it was received or what possible action would be taken.

41 Automatic Transmission problem

Failure Date: 01/15/2004

I first noticed a difference in my 99 Accord coupe v6 transmission when it was cold out. The car jerked between 1st and 2nd gear. It ran fine once the car warmed up. When I called Honda to ask about the issue, I was told older cars do that and it was nothing to worry about. About a month and a half later the transmission started jerking between 3rd and 4th when below 40 mph. My car then would not leave a stopped position until hitting at least 2500 rpm's then it kicked into gear. I took my car to my local Honda dealership - they flushed the transmission fluid - charged me $85 and on a side note on the bill they stated "transmission needs replacement - internal damage". They did not talk to me about this nor did they offer to repair this at a charge. When I purchased my car I bought the 100,000 mile extended warranty, which I paid close to $1500 for. Honda realized there was an issue and extended the 100,000 mile warranty automatically for the 2000-2002 models. I had approximately 108,000 miles on my car when I took it to Honda for this issue. After dealing with Honda customer care for over 3 weeks I got nothing but a run around from them. I was told to call the company that handles the extended warranty service, this company told me they were not sure why hcc referred me to them b/c it was hcc decision of how they wanted to handle my case. In the end Honda did nothing for me. I took my car to a transmission shop; after they tore down the transmission they found extensive damage. I was told that the 2nd gear thruster barring had fallen into the pump which destroyed it, 2nd gear was completely destroyed, the electrical cylinder was damaged beyond repair, and the remaining 3 gear thruster bearings had also fallen out. In the end it cost me over $3000 ($2000 in parts alone) and almost 2 months to repair the damage to my transmission.

42 Automatic Transmission problem

Failure Date: 01/11/2004

1999 Honda Accord needed transmission replaced at 40,000 and now is having problems again at 46,000 miles. A replacement is needed. Car is slow to move in 1st and does not shift properly. Hard to get moving with traffic and is dangerous when fast acceleration is needed in traffic.

43 Automatic Transmission problem

Failure Date: 12/01/2003

The automatic transmission stalls for 2 or 3 seconds and there is a lost of power before the car begins to move forward. Near accident when trying to merge on the interstate. Dealership advised that this is a common problem on Honda Accord v6 coupes with automatic transmissions. There is a recall for later models but not for 1999 year models. Dealership offered to replace transmission with a rebuilt for $ 3,000. The car randomly accelerates and decelerates in stop and go traffic. No problems when the car crosses 35 mph on the interstate.

44 Automatic Transmission problem

Failure Date: 11/18/2003

Every time I would accelerate, my car would stall then the car would give a strong jerk. I took the car to Honda and they told me it was ok, and they could not diagnose any problems. There is a recall for later models but not for 1999 year models. After repeated attempts at the dealership, they offered to replace transmission for a ridiculous charge of ~$ 5,000 since my warranty period had passed. Why does Honda issue a recall on the 2000+ models and not any other ones. This defective component poses a serious threat for my children and me.

45 Automatic Transmission problem

Failure Date: 11/10/2003

While at slow speed the transmisson paused and kicked forward on a 1999 Honda Accord ex v6 with only 78,000 plus miles.

Failure Date: 10/02/2003

Transmission service on 1999 Honda Accord coupe with 38,000 miles. Trans. Downshifts roughly from second to first. First attempt to fix by dealer July 5, 2003. Problem seemed to improve. Returned to dealer October 2, 2003 when got worse. Dealer replaced motor mounts it said were collapsed; charged me more than $400. Transmission still downshifts roughly on occasion. Request to dealer to refund portion of motor mount cost has received no response as of oct. 22 despite numerous calls and voice mails to customer service rep. Dave kitchen, 310. 783. 3025.

The transmission jumped and accelerated over 45 miles per hour. Check engine light came on, and then I was told that I needed a new transmission.

49 Automatic Transmission problem

Failure Date: 08/11/2003

Reoccuring transmission problems. Glad I bought the 100k warranty. . . Changed once at 60k due to bearing failure. . . Now at 75k the center between the back seats get very, very hot and starting to feel slipping. . . Again. Looks like another trip to the dealer for another transmission. I don't feel safe. . . 51 Automatic Transmission problem

Failure Date: 07/31/2003

Have been having transmission problems and am seeing a trend to others having similar problems. The dealer quoted $8000 new or $3327 for used. I don't think we should be having transmission problems on a car that is 3 years old. Anyone else having problems?.

53 Automatic Transmission problem

Failure Date: 07/02/2003

I have 1999 Honda Accord coupe ex v6. My tranny went at 66'000 miles. From what I have read on the internet an excessive amount of people are having the same problems. I have called Honda and they said there is no recall on 99 Accord transmissions but there is an extension on 2000/2001 transmissions for 7 years 100'00 miles. I am very upset and hope there is a recall on these transmissions. . . . Or at least compensate for the $3000 I spent to pay for a new transmission. Thank you.

59 Automatic Transmission problem

Failure Date: 05/09/2003

The automatic transmission on my 6 cylinder 1999 Honda Accord failed at around one hundred thousand miles even with scheduled fluid replacement. I was told by Honda of America that 2000-2002 Accords with the same problem were covered under an extended warranty but that my car did not meet the criteria. Transmission had to be completely re-built at my expense.

60 Automatic Transmission problem

Power train: automatic transmission - Accord 1999 ex-v6 transmission shifts hard and sometimes it even slips (pauses when shifting gear). Suspect the problem to be similar to model year 2000 and 2001, but no recall issued for 1999.

63 Automatic Transmission problem

Failure Date: 12/12/2002

The transmisson shifts hard. Sometimes it even slips. It started doing it few months ago. Right know my car has about 80000 miles on it. Honda has a recall on 2000 but since it is a 1999 they are making a excuss. My older 91 Accord was perfect till 250,000 miles . I guess with this kinda quality this will be my last Honda ever.

There is a clunking sound and vibration in steering, the wheel definitely is not turning at the same speed as the others. Honda is well aware of this problem but is still asking owners to pay for the cost to replace transmission with rebuild.

67 Automatic Transmission problem

The transmission was skipping second gear and would not reverse up a hill. Less than one year ago transmission was doing the same thing, and had to be replaced. A year later, the transmission was experiencing the same defect. Consumer learned there was a recall for the 2000 and 2001 Accords but not 1999. Was informed at this time by same dealership (6/26/2002) that my transmission was damaged and needed to be replaced.
