2003 Honda Accord. Consumer writes in regards to drivers side airbag safety recall.
2003 Accord ex sedan, 4 cyl, 95,970 miles. The side airbag (drivers seat) deployed for no reason while my 17 year old son was driving on a straight, 35 mph roadway. The seatbelt did not lock-up. I contacted the dealer service manager by phone, he told me that this was impossible and that my son was at fault. He told me that the airbags can deploy just from sliding sideways. He also stated that if I brought the car to him and paid $135. 00 he would check the car (computer) and show that there was an "incident" that deployed the airbag. As a retired state trooper (ret. 2015) I have investigated in excess of 4,000 crashes. There is no damage to the car, no indication of a collision with anything. I also know my son. I have also never seen airbag deployment without some sort of collision. A simple internet query shows that this is a problem, not just with front airbags. I did take photographs of the car, but can't upload them now.
My son was driving his 2003 Honda Accord 2dr ex v-6, with his 110 lb girlfriend. The car was very hot inside, as it was a 90 degree day. He slowly pulled out of his apartment entrance. As soon as he turned onto a small neighood road, the side passenger side airbags both activated with absolutely no collision or contact with anything. Luckily his girlfriend was not insured, she does still have a ringing or white noise sound in her right ear. I can't imagine what would have happened if they were on a major highway. She does still have a ringing.
Takata recall I was driving down the road when I lost control of my car. This resulted in my air bag being deployed as I came into collision with a guard rail on a city street. Luckily, only the passenger side airbag deployed. This resulted in my windshield being cracked.
My son was driving on turnpike ramp. Wheel seemed to lock up and he lost control of the vehicle. Car was going about 15-20 mph. He hit guard rail and both airbags deployed. The damage was not extensive enough (no hood damage, some bumper damage, no lights cracked). I had called and spoke with a service man named george who said they are overwhelmed and they do not have the passenger side airbag parts in my recall and he would call me. He did not and this accident occurred. Now I am at risk of them totaling the car due to airbags deploying that they should have resolved in the first place. Not a happy camper with no relief from coggin Honda - who could have killed my son in this accident.
I had a car accident in a parking lot on September 8, 2016. I was turning and hit a pole on the front fender of the drivers side of my car. I was going approximately 15 miles an hour. The airbag deployed and broke both bones in my right arm. It fractures my radius & ulna. Minutes late the passenger side airbag went off and broke the windshield. I was taken by ambulance to the hospital, where I had surgery. They had to put two metal plates & screws in my arm. I was in the hospital for 3 days and out of work on medical until November 28, 2016. I still have pain in my arm and fingers. Arthritis has set in my fore finger . I really feel that these airbags were defective. I'd appreciate it if you would investigate my claim. Thank you, Jan ludwig.
The contact owns a 2003 Honda Accord. While the contact's son was driving on an icy road at an unknown speed, the vehicle slid off the highway, over an embankment, and crashed into a tree. The contact stated that the crash was weather related and involved a lot of vehicles on the highway. The contact stated that only the passenger side air bag deployed. A police report was not filed. The driver sustained only minor scrapes that did not require medical attention. The contact called the insurance company who declared the vehicle as destroyed and towed it away. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. Prior to the crash, the vehicle was repaired under a recall for the air bags. The failure mileage was approximately 170,000.
Takata recall - driver's side was completed at lia Honda, albany NY on 12/16/15. Passenger side was not fixed - "unable to do recall. Passenger side door will not open. Customer is aware. . . " fixing the passenger side front door to open is not a viable option - too costly. Passenger side rear door does open and the front passenger side seat could be removed. This would provide access to the passenger side dash/airbag. What are my options for having the passenger side airbag recall completed? my call to american Honda (909-664-9134) was not particularly helpful - if I fixed the door to provide access, the recall could be completed - but I did receive a case # 04385255. The title to the car is in my wife's name, susan hitchcock, but I, richard bopp, am the primary driver at this time and so I am handling the recall.
Tl- the contact owned a 2003 Honda Accord. The contact was involved in a accident back in 2015. The contact had to swerve to miss another vehicle and he crashed into a concrete divider on the highway. The contact stated that the air bag deployed and the contact was taken to the emergency room where his face was swollen and his nose was broken. The contact believes his face was wounded by the the metal pellets that came out of the steering wheel driver's side air bag. A police report was not filed although the police did come to the scene. The vehicle was totaled by the contact's insurance company and was towed to a scrape yard. The manufacturer had not been contacted. The failure mileage was 100,000. Tf.
2003 Honda Accord. Consumer writes in regards to passenger side airbag recall. The consumer stated Honda failed to notified him of the recall.
I received a notification that my vehicle was among those included in a recall for the passenger side air bag. As instructed, I called a local Honda dealership to set up a time to have the part replaced. That was on February 11, 2015. I was told the part had to be ordered and that I would be contacted when I could bring my car in for the repair. It has been more than 60 days and I have not received any further information. I don't have time to chase Honda to replace a faulty part on my vehicle and I certainly don't feel comfortable having anyone sit in the passenger side of my car. It has become an inconvenience.
When I was sitting perfectly still parked in a parking lot, my driver side airbag and my passenger-side side airbag inflated. Nothing had hit me, and I hadn't hit anything. I have contacted Honda, and they will not return my calls, and are not being cooperative about fixing my car. There are multiple recalls for this exact thing happening.
Honda wrote you a letter, which I have a copy of from your website, on June 14, 2014 confirming discussion with you about looking into problems with the 2003 Honda Accord driver's airbag. They have only recalled the passenger side airbag. I do not feel safe in driving my Honda with the current driver airbag. What is the status of the recall for the driver's airbag for the 2003 Honda Accord?.
The contact owns a 2003 Honda Accord. The contact stated that the driver was traveling approximately 25 mph when the driver's side air bag suddenly deployed and caused the driver to crash into the preceding vehicle. The driver suffered injuries to the abdomen, right hand, and lacerations to the face. The front passenger of the other vehicle suffered a neck injury. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was notified. The failure mileage was 200,000.
The contact owns a 2003 Honda Accord. The contact stated that while driving 65 mph, the driver¿s side air bag inadvertently deployed. Once fully inflated, the air bag then exploded and with sparks and shards of material. The contact sustained injuries to the face, hands and chest due to the material being spewed from the air bag. The vehicle was towed to a dealer where the mechanic stated that tie rod ends were bent and a there was a dent on the pan. The contact was not advised as to why the air bags had deployed. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure and current mileage was 130,980.
The passenger side air bag on our 2003 Honda Accord ex exploded as I was driving about 60 miles per hour on the freeway. Due to light traffic we did not have an accident but both of us were very frightened and very distracted. My wife was unable to hear for at least a minute. Her seat belt became very tight even restricting her breathing we were unable to loosen the belt and had to stop as soon as it was safe and have her sit in the back seat. This is a serious defect and could result in an accident. I will be interested to see how Honda handles this as it is inexcusable that a safety device used to prevent injury could in effect cause one.

The contact was able to merge to the side of the road where the housing for the front passenger side airbag caught on fire. The failure mileage was approximately 80,000 and the current mileage was approximately 114,000.
On February 25, 2009 at 8 pm my 16 year old son was driving down the highway when the passenger side curtain and seat airbags spontaneously deployed. There was no crash. Contacted local dealer and they said this does not happen. Contacted insurance agent and they said it sounded like a manufacturer defect. Took the car to local dealership on 2/27/09 after inspection they told us they could not tell us why the airbags deployed. They said we needed to contact insurance agent, contacted agent and she is afraid the company will deny the claim if/when we file it. The estimate to repair the damages is $3,100+.
I own a 2003 Honda Accord and was driving on I-55 in the chicago area at ~70 mph when the passenger side curtain airbag deployed. There was no impact or collision, no road debris or potholes etc. I was traveling in the right hand lane and pulled over to the side of the highway to inspect my vehicle. Luckily as it was the passenger side and I was the only occupant of the vehicle, only my hearing was impacted. There were no marks, scratches or dents in my vehicle. I returned to my vehicle and slowly proceeded back onto the highway to drive home. I called my Honda dealer and took my car in for maintenance / repairs. They could not find a reason for the air bag system deployment either. I was told it was under warranty by the dealer and the necessary parts were ordered. Now Honda claims it is not their problem and is kicking it back to my insurance company. This event would have had much more serious impacts had the driver side airbags deployed.
The car was traveling 25mph and was stuck head on directly on the driver side. Car was totaled. Driver side airbag didn't deploy and driver side seat belt did not hold. The passenger side airbag deployed. This is a major flaw in the car design.
The contact owns a 2003 Honda Accord. While driving 20 mph, the contact's vehicle was struck on the driver's side by another vehicle. The passenger side air bag deployed, but the driver's side did not. The contact was wearing her seat belt and taken to a local hospital with chest pain. A police report was filed. The failure and current mileages were 96,000. Updated 09/23/08 updated 09/25/08.
While driving in stop and go traffic on i95 going app. 30mph, the side airbag deployed for no apparent reason. No side impact incurred. There was substantial damage to the interior of the car. No damage to the exterior of the car since there wasn't any type of crash or side impact. Airbag was replaced, damage to the passenger seat and interior roof of the car repaired.
My Honda Accord ex 2003 air bag warning light is on and off. Since this is a safety/safeness issue so I tell you about this.
While driving on I-95, I hit something in the road causing the side curtain airbags to deploy. By the way I tried to report this to your hot line twice by leaving messages; no one ever called back.
I was driving my 2003 Honda Accord ex-v6 on a highway when a passenger side curtain and side airbags deployed for no reason. There was no accident, no hit, no pothole. Insurance company investigated and found no damages to the car that could trigger airbags; Honda technicians after three days say they found a damage (dent?) on undercarriage that may have triggered the sensor. The car has 45500 mile on it. Police was called on a scene but no report was filed.
The contact owns a 2003 Honda Accord. The current mileage was 77000. While driving 10 mph the passenger side front and rear air bags deployed. There was no prior warning indication and no crash. The vehicle had been looked at by a dealer who stated that the side sensor was bad. The failure mileage was 62000.
The contact owns a 2003 Honda Accord. In June of 2006 (the exact date was unknown), while driving 10 mph uphill the passenger side air bag deployed, and ripped open the seat all including the back. The mechanic stated that the vehicle hit something and the contact stated that nothing had been hit. The current mileage was 77,000, and the failure mileage and the engine size were unknown.
I was driving about 55mph on a freeway in cleveland, OH. I saw something on the road and quickly swerved to avoid it. The item hit the bottom of the car with little impact, and the right curtain airbags in the back and front, and passenger seat airbag both deployed. I recalled a loud noise, but I didn't see the airbags actually inflate. I immediately took the car into a Honda dealer, and was advised that there was a dent underneath that must have caused the airbags to deploy. Repair costs were quoted, but nothing was repaired.
Left side impact collision while stopped. Side air bag failed to deploy. No side curtain air bags available. Photos available. Not yet repaired.
While driving, swerved to miss road debris, not for sure if hit anything. Both passenger side curtain and seat air bags deployed with no warning, causing skin laceration, bump on head, and ringing in the right ear. If consumer did strike something on the road it would have hit the undercarriage without enough force to cause this deployment.
