Honda Accord owners have reported 113 problems related to transmission not go into gear (under the power train category). The most recently reported issues are listed below. Also please check out the statistics and reliability analysis of Honda Accord based on all problems reported for the Accord.
The transmission has been slipping on and off for 2 weeks until last night, when it failed completely. I noticed it shift into a lower gear when I let my foot off the gas, and then it would not engage any gears. I had it towed to a nearby transmission shop who confirmed that the transmission had failed and would need to be replaced. Failure happened at 8 years and 114000 miles.

Just hit the 100,000 mark on this Accord. The transmission is out and will not shift into gear. It just stopped while driving. Thank goodness this did not happen on the freeway. Hondas are supposed to go forever, but this seems to be a common problem. The recall apparently did not fix the transmission problem. I will not be buying or recommending Honda again.

Driving the car no prob till recently in July when my transmission decide it wont go into gear every once in a while. Give me sudden stops while driving on the highway. Almost causing accidents, since the last stop I have stopped driving it and started researching only to find it is a common problem with the vehicle. Knowinly producing inadequate unsafe products. Thanks alot Honda.
The contact owns a 2004 Honda Accord. The contact was driving 60 mph when the tachometer malfunctioned and the vehicle stalled. The vehicle would not shift between gears and the vehicle was towed to the dealer. The dealer advised that the transmission had failed due to burned transmission fluid caused by excessive heat. The dealer did not replace the transmission. The failure mileage was 127,000.
Honda has a transmission design flaw in their early 2000 Honda Accords. I own a 2002 Accord with 107,000 miles that requires a new transmission. I was surprised because this brand is known to be reliable. Upon researching Honda transmission problems online, I found several articles and multiple consumer complaints regarding Honda transmission failure. Honda did recall transmissions in certain models from 2003 and 2004. America Honda knows they have a problem and they declined to assist me with the repair because my 2002 Accord was not one of the recall models. I am now stuck with $3,600 repair bill for a new transmission. Almost had a wreck when pulling out into traffic since the car did not engage 2nd gear.

With no warning my 3rd gear went out in my 2003 Honda Accord. Very dangerouse when a vehicle is behind you and you can't excelerate due to not having a 3rd gear. I came very close to being rear ended but luckly got off to the side of the road. After looking it up online I found many complaints of this happening in the 03 Accords, I don't know how many times it has to happen before Honda will take ownership but with the cost of replacing the transmission being $3500-$4000 they need to do something. I can't afford to get this fixed!!.
The transmission started having a slight flare in 2nd to 3rd shift around 150,000 miles. I got it serviced at mel rapton Honda on 3/20/2012 and was told about the flare issue. Now at 180,000 the transmission will not go past 3rd gear and needs to be replaced.
I purchased my 2001 Honda Accord ex from a private party in Feb of 2011. At the end of April, I started noticing gear shifting problems and a week later it just got worse-the d4 light would flash continuosly and the car would rev up but would not move causing me to almost encounter a few accidents. When I did my research and contacted a mechanic, they told me the repairs would be between $2,000 and $3,000 which I do not have!!! I have been forced to put the only form of transportation I have to the side untill I can attempt to get the money to repair it.

I have a 2007 Honda Accord v6 inside the door it says it was manifacture on Aug 2006 and I bought it that year in septmeber. What it happing is the transmission is doing all the signs of the 2003-2006 recalls of the transmision. The high pitch noise and it wont go into 3rd gear. I also sometimes drop right in to the first gear. I have since stop driving it. I was on the freeway in the carpool lane during commute time with my children when it decided to go out of gear. It is at 90000 miles right now and I have done all the maintance on it and it is just went out of commition. I called Honda and they told me tlhat there is no recalls for the 2007. I think they need to investaget this to see if some of the 07 Accords fall under the recalll list. I paid 40000 for this veichele and still have 6 paymets left on it. Pleasd do something about this. I am single parent and have no tranportoinm,.

Premature transmission failure. Transmission began not going into gear cold but after warming up shifted normally. 2 days later it started slipping so bad it barely made it to the dealer. The normal service interval for this transmission is 100,000 miles so I don't think it should fail prior to reaching this point. There was at one point a transmission recall for this vehicle however Honda's position is that this has nothing to do with the failure. After doing some research I find many Honda owners with the same complaint. When speaking with the dealer they indicated they would contact Honda and ask for assistance on my behalf. As per the dealer after speaking with Honda they (Honda) would pick up 50% of the repair which was acceptable to me but what happens now is the dealer ups the price of the repair to $5000. 00 and I get to pay $2500. 00 which is what the normal cost should be. I retired from this business 2 years ago so I am pretty savy when it comes to prices. Seeing as there are so many with the same problem Honda should be doing all these repairs free.
While driving my 03 Accord exv6 the transmission slips and will not go into gear. I was merging onto the highway today and the car went to 6000 rpm before going into gear. I am looking into getting the transmission repaired or replaced with a remanufactured one. I brought the car in for the 04 recall on 12. 14. 04 after waiting 10 weeks for an appt. It was then modified with lube pipe kit. The transmission has never been right from the beginning it has always slipped. I see there are many many complaints about this. Why isn't there a recall or any recourse from Honda? this car was 1 day short of being a lemon. I sent repair documentation to Honda hq in CA previously.
"6 speed manual transmission will not shift into 3rd gear" when accelerating at a slow to moderate pace, the transmission will not enter 3rd gear when shifting from 2nd gear. The problem occurs randomly and is therefore a danger to everyone on the road. Honda 3rd gear TSB on 6 speed manual transmissions did not resolve the issue. . Read more...

My wife bought this car brand new in 2003 and recently experienced a failure of 3rd gear in the automatic transmission. Transmission will not shift into 3rd gear and goes into neutral mode. Will continue on to 4th gear only if you back off the throttle, which slows the vehicle down in the process. This puts the occupants and vehicles behind you at risk of a rear end collision. Problem is the 3rd gear clutch pack in the transmission that is used in the 2003 Honda Accord v-6's. Local transmission shop said that this part has been on local backorder from Honda for 9 months and does not know when new parts will be available. Called Honda corporate and they said that there would not be any help since the car is 7 years old/108k miles. Only choice was to use a transmission out of a salvage vehicle, which could lead to another failure since the salvage transmission would also be subject to this failure. This has been a recurring and known issue for 2003 Honda Accord v-6's and it would be nice to see them issue a TSB for this issue and replace the transmission under warranty.
Transmission started slipping out of gear and/or would not go into gear. It progressively got worse in a matter of couple days. At one point I was on the freeway and it slipped out of gear. It seems to work when the car is just starting. Once the car is warmed up, the real issue begins.
(1) Honda Accord 2003 automatic transmission fails to shift, slips down to lower gear causing car to slow suddenly. (2) reported transmission issues at 60k miles to Honda, asked to pay for repeat flushes etc. Discovered this is a known issue. Took car to dealer 5 days ago (for 3rd time) for diagnosis. Honda reported no transmission issue. 40 miles later (yesterday) car slipped repeatedly down to 2nd causing rpm to spike to 5000 and engine braking to kick in. Was in middle of busy intersection with car that would not engage in gear and accelerate out of path of oncoming traffic. Nearly hit multiple times - by cars traveling 40+mph. Extremely disgusted. Honda knows this is an issue - why no recall? being stalled in traffic or stranded at the side of the road is a safety issue - especially for women. Dealer acknowledged today that car needs a new transmission - after telling me 40 miles ago that the transmission was fine. (3) raised case with american Honda and am now awaiting outcome.
Normal driving of the car has lead to a transmission failure that is known by widely by other victims of the problem. 2002 Honda Accord ex, transmission is know to fail due to 2nd gear slipping, and other gears 'jerking' around. This occurs every time the vehicle is started. When car goes into second gear it lunges forward or feels like someone hit you from the rear. Also jerk violently when put into reverse. When transmission is on it's last breath , it does not go into gear, meaning if your trying to get on the main road from a side street, you might be hit on the side if your lean your car out to go when transmission does not go into gear, leaving you vulnerable on the road. A transmission rebuild due to clutch packet, a transmission swap, or transmission replacement are the only choices a victim has. Pricing from $6,000(transmission swap from Acura cl-s type s)-$1,500(transmission rebuild). Honda Accord drivers can not afford this due to Honda ignorance of it's customers safety.
My 2003 Honda Accord 6 cylinder auto transmission is slipping. When the car heats up and I try to accelerate. . . It will not shift into gear.
1. After driving 20+ miles on the highway, the car began "bucking" violently. I took my foot off the gas pedal, but the bucking continued. Then it subsided. As I was coasting (neither gas nor brake pedal was pressed), it began bucking again, with some tire squeals that felt like the car was braking hard. 2. After letting the car sit overnight (engine off), I drove it again down the highway 20+ miles where the same thing happened. It seemed as though it was stuck in 3rd gear. As I approached faster speeds, the car did not change gears, and the rpms continued to climb to 4-5-6-7000. It seemed as though if it tried to change into 4th gear, that may trigger the violent bucking, but whether or not it would change into 4th gear was random (no rthym to it). The light on the dashboard next to the "d" started blinking, along with the check engine light, and traction control light. I am lucky that no one was following close to me on the highway because it could have caused harm to another driver and it's passengers, as well as me. 3. Transmission replacement corrected the problem.
When driving my 2003 Honda Accord through the mountains, uphill, my car suddenly downshifted into neutral. The engine revved like it could not choose a gear. The car was jerking as the engine continue to rev and it shifted in and out of gear (I don't know if it tried to engage each gear separately, or the same gear each time). I pulled over to the shoulder and turned the car off, however when I turned it back on I continued to have the same problem. The only way I could drive the car was to put it in 2nd gear and leave it there on a mountain freeway with many switchbacks and a speed limit of 45-55mph. This happened within 10 miles of starting my trip home after the car had been parked for several hours. I had noticed a few days previous to this event that the transmission felt like it was slipping out of gear so I had made an appointment with the mechanic to have it checked. When I brought it in the next morning I explained what happened and after examining the car he said the transmission would need to be replaced. I then took it to anderson Honda who examined the car and also said the transmission needed to be replaced. The car has a clean history and has only ever been maintained by a Honda dealer with on time scheduled maintenance. I contacted Honda of America for help paying for the transmission replacement as I feel this is a manufacturing error, not a driver/maintenance error. I contacted a lawyer who was able to speak with a regional manager of Honda USA who said that because my car was over 3 yrs old and more than 36,000 miles they were not responsible for the car's performance and suggested I trade my car in for a new Honda. The failure occurred at 94,000 miles. The dealership is helping me with a 25% discount. I will never buy another Honda after the problems I've had with this one (multiple recalls already) and the curt costumer service. I would never have expected this from Honda.
My car suddenly started to stop shifting into gear. Driving, it would slip out of gear and I would have to shift it into another gear to get it to move. This would fail and I would shift it into another gear. Starting from red light--10 to 15 seconds with no response from car--very dangerous situation to be in. Took to Honda dealer--needed a new transmission--cost $3,400. Ridiculous. Car has only 58,000 miles on it.
Noticed the transmission had been slipping for a couple of days. I made an appointment to take my car into the dealer on 8/3/2010. I had my 3 year old and 5 month old infant in car with me while driving to the dealership to drop off my car. Was on a short strip of the freeway going about 40 mph when all of a sudden the car began to sound as if it was struggling to shift into another gear. It abruptly stopped then thrust the car forward immediately. My car crashed into the side of the street leaving a scrape on the left bumper. When I arrived at the dealer, the service person told my husband that they would not touch my car since it was 145k miles and was well out of the warranty. They are charging us a $100 diagnosis fee only to figure out what is wrong with it. I called american Honda to file a complaint only to get the same "at the mileage that you are at we are unable to cover any cost to repair the vehicle" husband just got a call from dealership stating there are two problems with the car one is with the part that communicates with the car to shift to a correct gear and the other is a problem with the internal transmission. The solution is to replace the transmission. Honda and the Honda rep again stand by their admission that they are not responsible for the replacement cost since the car is out of warranty. I can understand if I do excessive damage to my car, but I drive less than 25k a year and only drive locally transporting my family. This is disconcerting and I am very upset that Honda refuses to stand by their product! please investigate as my "crash" could have been more serious and could potentially harm the safety and lives of both my passengers and others on the road. Thank you for your consideration.
Automatic transmission began slipping around 90k miles (2 weeks ago). Has gotten progressively worse with violent jerking between shifts and unexpected downshifts which equate to suddenly flooring the brakes. Have had incidents on highway when in overdrive and slowing, transmission searches, or does not go back into gear leaving engine disconnected from drivetrain. Almost rearended on 3 occasions thus far as car suddenly downshifts around 40 mph in town. Problem continues to worsen and now do not have reverse gear on occasion. Should not drive car but have no alternative. Will attempt repair myself if Honda will not cover cost. Extended warranty expired 3 months prior.
2003 Honda Accord 3. 0 4dr automatic - transmission failure occurred while driving in rush hour traffic at 30 miles an hour. The vehicle suddenly slipped out of gear and rapidly decelerated nearly causing an accident. The vehicle would not stay in gear and when the transmission did engage it would only go into 2nd/3rd gear. The failure occurred again while attempting to get the vehicle to the dealership resulting in a loss of vehicle control. The dealership now has the vehicle and has stated that the vehicle requires a new transmission. Due to the age of the vehicle the part will cost more than the vehicle is valued.
I have a 2002 Honda Accord ex. . With a huge transmission problem. I have maintained my vehicle and it started shifting hard about a year ago. Now it wont go into most gears. While I was driving it, it just started revving really high. . . In traffic, and wouldn't go forward. I had to pull off the road to avoid being in an accident. I have been researching this and it seems this year and model have a defect that is not being addressed by Honda.
My Honda Accord 03 transmission is slipping gear and it happens very often. When I am at a stop light and start driving the transmission revs up and do not shift gears for about 5 min. I had to pull over and wait for a bit and then start driving again and eventually it will shift to the 2nd gear and then drive properly. It has happened pretty often and has happened on a rainy day and I thought I was going to get into an accident.
The contact owns a 2005 Honda Accord. While driving various speeds, the vehicle would not shift gears and suddenly stalled. The vehicle was towed to an authorized dealer where the contact was informed that the transmission failed. The vehicle was being repaired when the complaint was filed. The current and failure mileages were approximately 33,000.

The contact owns a 2003 Honda Accord lx. While driving at speeds of 35 mph the vehicle suddenly increased in engine rpms while in drive gear. He then attempted to utilize a different gear, however the vehicle would not pick up any power and would not accelerate. The vehicle engine continued to idle, however the vehicle would not read any gears. The manufacturer was contacted and advised that there were no recalls and would take no liability for the failure. The vehicle was taken to his independent mechanic who stated that the automatic transmission had failed and would need to be replaced, at the owner's expense. The contact was awaiting repairs at the time of the complaint. The failure and current mileages were approximately 135,000. The VIN was not available.
Car began to jump while driving at low speeds when gears were shifting. Car began to make a loud noise. Car would not shift from 2nd to 3rd gear on highway causing me to pull over. Found out transmission slips when driving at high speeds on the highway. Car would rev up but not shift gears.
The contact owns a 2005 Honda Accord. The contact stated that the transmission was slipping. While driving 40 mph the transmission failed and the vehicle would not shift into gear. She had to drive onto the emergency lane. The vehicle was inoperable and had to be towed to an auto shop. A mechanic stated that transmission needed to be replaced. The Honda manufacturer was notified and a claim was filed. Contact file a claim and they should be giving her a call back. The failure mileage was 59,000.
I was driving and all of a sudden the transmission began slipping. Within 2-3 miles the car would not move in any gear. I called tow truck and when he arrived I tried again and was successful in turning the car around. I found on this site a reference to a recall notice but Honda doesn't show any recalls for my car. One repair shop wants to put in another transmission est. $3,000. I am planning on taking to Honda dealer and try again in person.
Drove home from vacation and car was fine. Next morning driving to work felt transmission begin to slip. On way home from work the transmission began slipping and rpm's shot up to 5000 to almost 6,000 and car decreased speed rapidly, car jerked and began to go again. Waited until I could get to a empty straight road and tried to increase speed rapidly and same thing occurred- rpm's shot up and car not in gear. Drove next day to work and car did same thing. Had to have car towed from work. Honda says there isn't a recall and have not had "any complaints to this, it could be that the proper service has not been completed by you". Well I have my car serviced every 3,000 miles and had transmission fluid flushed every 10,000. Last time it was flushed none of their service tech thought there was a problem due to not being serviced properly.
Transmission started slipping during lunch break and almost caused me to collide into another vehicle as I was stopped uphill and when let off brake car was not in gear. After rolling backwards towards curb from left hand turn lane, stopping engine and starting again I started limping back to work. The trans slipped, rpm's rose and then kicked in gear lurching forward almost hitting a vehicle. Had to be towed 60 miles home.
2003 Honda Accord ex, v6 with 5-speed automatic transmission: car had been regularly maintained According to manufacturers recommendations. Problem started as transmission slipping when going up hills. It would not go into gear right away and would rev until I let off the gas and repeated a few times. The real problem began shortly thereafter; after driving for approximately 20 minutes, regardless of speed, the transmission would suddenly and violently downshift seemingly from third to first gear. Once it happened, it would continue every few minutes until I stopped and turned off the car. The second time this occurred was while merging onto a busy highway. Immediately after, I took it to the dealership to be inspected. They initially told me there was no problem -- they road-tested it and could not duplicate it. I insisted they drive it for 20 minutes and upon doing so, they told me it was a transmission failure and I would need a new transmission. After getting a second opinion (since the car only had 55k miles) from a Honda-certified mechanic, he confirmed that the clutches were burnt and the bearings worn out and said it was a common problem in the 2003 Accord 5-speed automatic transmission. Had the mechanic rebuild the transmission.
My car begin hesitating going from 1st to 2nd gear on Thursday (11/19). I took it to the repair shop Friday morning and had the oxygen sensor replaced. It continued to do to same thing Friday night, so I took it back Saturday afternoon. Friday night and Saturday morning it got progressively worse. It begin to buck when shifting gears and at times I would rev the engine and it would take several seconds to jump into gear and get past 20 mph. The auto shop told me my 2003 Honda Accord (120k) needed a new transmission. As I left to get other quotes, I was in the middle lane on a busy street and as I tried to accelerate my car would not go into gear (it was as if I was in neutral). I quickly turned on my hazards and pressed the gas pedal for about 30 secs. It finally jumped into gear and I immediately pulled in 7-eleven and called a tow truck. It took from Thursday to Saturday for my car to become a safety hazard to me and others on the road and after reading about several other similar complaints on other websites, I am horrified this issue has not been rectified earlier.
Purchased "certified" 03 Honda Accord in 04 with 41k miles. Took to peninsula Honda, oct 16 2009, hampton for service on recall for windshield, car started to act funny, would not shift in gear, was told I had a "faulty" transmission and would cost me about $4,000 to fix along with other items. Car was working fine until that day. Contacted american Honda was told by first rep that my car was covered and was told about a recall on the transmission. She transferred me to someone else to file my case and it has gone downhill since. Was told that my "new car" purchase/warranty was not covered. I have documents from Honda corp that says 7 years or 100k miles on warranty given by dealership when purchased car. Took warranty back to dealership, manger took paperwork to the back for over 35 minutes which he was in the back while waiting I overhead two workers (possible managers) talking about it laughing and saying she even got a lawyer but it isn't covered, while manager, chris was in back with paperwork. Upon his return, he said it wasn't covered and gave it back. I told him that my attorney would contact him and gave him the attorneys card, he said well you do whatever and walked off. One of the guys who was laughing earlier walked up with the card and told me that I don't need to have the lawyer to call chris, manager and was giving me the card back. I have been without a vehicle for a whole month, I have been catching rides to work (while paying people for their gas because they say that gas is expensive), I have been a burden to others. I applied for a loan, cant get another car, this Honda will be paid off next year and Honda doesn't want to take responsibility for selling me a vehicle which was not what I thought, it is only 6 years old and the transmission is out. Please someone help me, I don't know what to do and as a consumer, I need help. Please help I was treated with respect when they were selling me the "certified Honda but now they act like they don't care!.
