36 Transmission Slip Out Of Gear problem of the 2003 Honda Accord

Failure Date: 12/03/2010

My complaint pertains to the transmission failure that has occurred 3-December 2010. Purchased new, single owner/driver. This transmission was recalled in 2004 for the 2nd gear of the automatic transmission because it would over heat and possibly explode destroying the transmission. I had the "fix" Honda implemented for this recall done shortly after I received the recall notice. I have had the transmission fluid changed at the Honda dealership only a minimum of every two years as Honda advised me to do pertaining to their maintenance schedule and my driving conditions. I had my transmission fluid changed 2 weeks prior to the transmission failing and it would slip out of 2nd gear going into 3rd gear at a frequency of once per day for three days in a row and then would not happen for a couple days. This issue was resolved by letting of the gas and the car would shift into 3rd successfully. It will fail to accelerate when it shifts from 2nd to 3rd gear. It varies in time when it will re-engage and it has left me in a dangerous situation several times and there is no warning for this failure. It has been reported numerous times and seems to be a common problem of this year and model. Recently I pulled out onto a roadway and began to accelerate, when the transmission failed to engage when shifting into 3rd gear, en route traffic caught up to me and my abrupt failure to accelerate/merge with traffic, caused a near accident of several of those vehicles that were approaching with wet road conditions as to my vehicle that was abruptly stranded and non-mobile. I was nearly rear ended and had no warning that this failure is going to occur. The car that was behind me was able to swerve to the shoulder to avoid striking my car with the front end of their vehicle. I believe this to be a serious safety issue and am very concerned as I have read of hundreds of the exact same issue I have with the same 2003 Honda Accord I own. Honda has a serious problem.

37 Transmission Slip Out Of Gear problem of the 2003 Honda Accord

Failure Date: 11/15/2010

Driving home a couple hours ago the transmission violently downshifted to first gear when I was accelerating on the parkway doing about 65mph. Threw me violently forward thank god I wear my seat belt or else I probably would have went through the windshield. Would not shift up out of first gear after the initial downshift. Pulled over and restarted my car. Continued about ten minutes really slowly in the right lane until I got off at my exit. I steadily began to brake coming to a red light and all of a sudden it downshifted to a halt making the person behind my slam on their brakes and come to a screeching stop. Continued to drive down the 25mph residential road leading to my house at 20mph because any more acceleration shot the rpms up to redline. When I got to my house I also realized that when I put the car in reverse, the reverse gear does not activate and instead the car just revs as if it is in neutral when giving it gas. This is ridiculous and a serious safety issue to say the least. Since purchasing this car I have always babied it and had the scheduled maintenance performed. There are hundreds of issues like mine and it is known by Honda that these transmissions are a problem. They should stand by their reputation and fix or replace the transmissions free of charge.

38 Transmission Slip Out Of Gear problem of the 2002 Honda Accord

39 Transmission Slip Out Of Gear problem of the 2002 Honda Accord

Failure Date: 10/08/2010

I am a naval officer, single parent, faithful tax payer, and a foster mom. I come to you today with a complaint about my Honda Accord automobile (2002 ex v6 engine) to which I am the original owner, and the service I received from american Honda and hoehn Honda of carlsbad CA. Up until this point, I have not had many issues with my Honda. My Honda Accord 2002 was a wonderful car, my very first new car, which I was the origional owner, finances, and so on. I drove this car off the lot without even 1 mile on the dash, and the dealership told me by law they had to put at least 1 mile on the dash, in order to sell the car, and they allowed me to put that 1 mile on the dash. I bought this car with the intentions of keeping well past 400k miles, and possibly passing it onto my son as his first car, which would of given me the security that I was passing him something reliable, and something I know he would have little to no major out of pocket expenses for, and clearly at the time that was the repartition that Hondas hadnow, I would not give this car to anyone, knowing what I know. Before all of this occurred, I was basically drive my Honda to and from work, to and from my kids school, and in and around daily travels, with exception to occasional family outings. I recently paid this car off, and since this time, I have come out of my pocket with all kinds of unforeseen expenses and enough is enough. My first experience with my 2002 Honda Accords transmission occurred was when I was driving at 35 mph and the car bucked in ongoing traffic and completely stalled. I was amazed because, my car had not did this before, and it was terrifying considering I had my kids and 2 of their friends in the car, and it did a number on our necks. Now, my Honda Accord 2002 now begins to slip every time I pulled off at the light, stop sign, and so on. Hondas transmission started slipping out of gear, jerking, and while driving at a speed of 45-60 mph my car would start to increase speed.

45 Transmission Slip Out Of Gear problem of the 2004 Honda Accord

Failure Date: 06/14/2010

This has happened twice while driving on highway. The tcs (traction control) warning light comes on as well the engine icon light, and then the automatic transmission on the 2004 Accord v6 won't drop out of high gear. It feels like it's stuck in 5th or 4th gear and won't downshift. I have to stop car, restart it, then the transmission works like normal.

46 Transmission Slip Out Of Gear problem of the 2004 Honda Accord

Failure Date: 03/30/2010

1. Per the 2004 Honda Accord owners manual, the transmission fluid does not have to be replaced until 120,000 miles or 6 years, whichever comes first. A few weeks ago, at 92,000 miles, the car was 6 years old so we had the transmission fluid replaced for the first time using Honda fluid, all in strict Accordance with the Honda owner's manual. The mechanic said the original fluid was very gray and there was a lot of metal attached to the drain plug. It looked really bad. 2. On 4/30/10 at 92,500 miles, (500 miles later), we were driving at 35 mph and the car started cutting out. We stopped immediately and the car idled fine. We started to accelerate again and the car would not shift out of first gear. We had car towed immediately to the Honda dealer. 3. On 3/31/10, the Honda dealer told us that the transmission needs to be replaced. I spoke to the dealer and Honda motor company and showed them NHTSA campaign id number 04v176000, which is a recall of the 2004 Honda Accord automatic transmission, but they told me it was VIN specific and suggested I file a complaint with the NHTSA in hopes that the recall would be expanded.

48 Transmission Slip Out Of Gear problem of the 2003 Honda Accord

Failure Date: 02/04/2010

Purchased the car 1. 5 yrs ago @ 99,000 from a "certified" used Honda dealership. Did all scheduled maintenance. Check engine light came on in 1/10. Replace rear catalytic converter. 2/10 transmission started slipping out of gear and red lining the rpm's. Car would not shift out of 2nd or 3rd gear. Took to mechanic and transmission is blown.

49 Transmission Slip Out Of Gear problem of the 2003 Honda Accord

Failure Date: 01/30/2010

Vehicle "slips" out of gear when driving leaving the transmission to rev in neutral. Gear selector never moves. This "slipping" happens at a variety of speeds, but particularly when the automatic transmission is in passing gear or downshifting to go up hills. Sometimes all it takes to get the vehicle back in gear is moving the gear selector to neutral while coasting and then moving it back into drive. Other times the vehicle must be pulled over to the side of the road and in time it will go back into drive without slipping out of gear again.

The manufacturer confirmed that there were no recalls, warranties or reimbursement regarding the failure. The failure mileage was 85,000.

51 Transmission Slip Out Of Gear problem of the 2003 Honda Accord

Failure Date: 10/15/2009

Automatic transmission slips out of gear going from 2nd to 3rd or when coasting in 15 to 25 mph range. Car loses power and hesitates causing traffic blockage during rush hour. Car has to be stopped and then re-accelerated to move again. This can happen anytime vehicle does stop and go traffic. I. E. All of rush hour traffic.

52 Transmission Slip Out Of Gear problem of the 2003 Honda Accord

Failure Date: 09/21/2009

2003 Honda Accord ex v6 has faulty transmission. I purchased this car used in 2006 and was unaware that the transmission had been recalled. The car did not come with any service records. The car is slipping out of gear and downshifting suddenly as well as getting stuck in 2nd and 3rd gear while driving in heavy traffic. I was on an incline in rush hour highway traffic today and the car would not go over 20 miles an hour.

53 Transmission Slip Out Of Gear problem of the 2003 Honda Accord

Failure Date: 07/28/2009

While driving the 2003 Honda Accord v-6 with 109,000 miles, the transmission started slipping out of gear; within 500 miles of the slip out of gear and whilst traveling at 65 miles per hour on interstate-5 in los angeles, the transmission completely failed; rpm shot up, and pushing gas pedal had no affect of speed or control. Car immediately slowed down in the fast lane and created a major freeway hazard; other drivers swerved to avoid me whilst I continued to slow and drift to right shoulder and off-ramp; upon shutting of car and waiting 20 minutes I was able to travel at a slow rate of speed to my house in first gear only and in no gear some of the time. In front of my house, transmission failed again. Afraid to drive car and the scar of nearly causing an accident, I had car towed on a tow truck to mechanic. Transmission mechanic diagnosed that transmission has "died" and needs to be completely rebuilt or replaced. Transmission mechanic with 30+ years of experience is correcting situation by rebuilding the transmission completely. This sudden failure almost caused a catastrophic accident that had to potential to involve me and other motorists. This is a major safety hazard and defect.

54 Transmission Slip Out Of Gear problem of the 2003 Honda Accord

Failure Date: 07/21/2009

At 55 mph on highway, car suddenly slipped out of gear and rpms spiked up. No forward power. Had to coast on to the shoulder and shutoff and restart the car. Problem continued on that trip but seemed ok thereafter. Brought to dealer but nothing found. Over the next few years problem has occurred every so often unpredictably (no pattern) despite changing transmission fluid and staying current on maintenance. Increased in frequency at 100k miles. Most days the car is fine but then the problem will occur suddenly. Has happened when merging on to highways, when already at highway speeds and sometimes shortly after accelerating from a stop at a traffic light or stop sign. Occasionally happens when yielding (I. E. Slowing down for a yield sign and then trying to accelerate again).

55 Transmission Slip Out Of Gear problem of the 2004 Honda Accord

Failure Date: 07/20/2009

Commuting to work in the morning, when I was getting on the freeway the car seemed to slip out of gear. The rpm's went very high (7k), but I couldn't accelerate at all. I coasted for a while and was eventually able to accelerate normally again. The car behaved normally the rest of the time on the freeway, but had the same thing happen again after I exited the freeway. After stopping at an intersection, I couldn't get out of 1st gear for a while. After work, I drove the car around the back streets for a little to see if I thought I could get home, figuring that once I got on the freeway, everything would be fine. After a few miles on the freeway, it happened again. I couldn't accelerate at all, and had to cut across 4 lanes with just my momentum to pull over on the shoulder. Once there, I restarted the car and tried to see if I could move at all. I couldn't. In park, I could rev the engine and see the rpm's increase, but when I shifted to drive or reverse, I couldn't get the engine to engage or move at all. I restarted the car several times, and eventually got it to respond, but shortly after getting back on the freeway, it happened again, so I pulled over once more and called a tow truck. The tow truck got me back to the Honda dealer, where I later found out I needed a new transmission. This is a 2004 with 90k miles.

56 Transmission Slip Out Of Gear problem of the 2004 Honda Accord

Failure Date: 06/20/2009

While driving down route 9 in old bridge, NJ my vehicle slipped out of gear. It was during rush hour and my car slowed down to 20 mph.

57 Transmission Slip Out Of Gear problem of the 2002 Honda Accord

Failure Date: 06/10/2009

My 2002 Honda Accord lx is at 110k miles. I am having transmission problems. It is an automatic transmission. It never happened before nor did it have a minor problem leading to it. It just all of a sudden this year, 2009, started to jerk between stop and goes, slips out of gear and decelerates, it drops gears when slowing to a stop. I am afraid to pull out of traffic when I know I have enough time and space to pull out due to my car jerking. And also afraid of stopping at red lights and stop signs knowing that my car will jerk, slip, and go then decelerate. I have replaced my timing belt, fan belt, water pump, transmission fluid flushed and refilled, engine oil, oil pan and gasket, spark plugs. I have done all the necessary replacements for my car at 100k mile mark. And I was told if you keep the maintenance my car will always run like new. And it had run like new until this summer when my car started to jerk, slip, shift in and out of gear, and decelerate for no reason. I am not very happy after all the money, time and effort I put in this car and especially for it to suddenly not drive correctly.

58 Transmission Slip Out Of Gear problem of the 2003 Honda Accord

Failure Date: 05/29/2009

2003 Honda Accord v6 transmission slips out of gear, and it will not go in reverse or shift beyond second gear once this starts happening. Events leading to the failure were normal wear and tear. This vehicle has 120,000 miles and has been taken to the dealer for regular maintenance. It also had the transmission recall work from 2004 performed shortly after it was announced. It occurs shortly after starting to drive as soon as the transmission is warm. It causes extreme jerks due to the sudden deceleration which could result in an accident in traffic. It causes problems then accelerating and the car is unable to be driven past 30-35 mph. The correction is to replace the transmission. The dealership is looking into this for me now and may have old parts available.

59 Transmission Slip Out Of Gear problem of the 2003 Honda Accord

Failure Date: 05/01/2009

Near miss = car would not shift out of second gear - therefore resulting in power loss. This is a serious hazard as the car loses speed and approaching car almost rear end you. Due to transmission failure - now having to get new transmission!.

60 Transmission Slip Out Of Gear problem of the 2003 Honda Accord

Failure Date: 03/28/2009

Car slips out of gear at high speeds or low speed down shifts on its own wont shift out of first gear at all wont reverse.

61 Transmission Slip Out Of Gear problem of the 2003 Honda Accord

Failure Date: 03/22/2009

I have a 2003 Honda Accord ex with the 3. 0l v-6. I am expressing total loss of power with my transmission. My wife was going to work one morning, the car slipped out of gear and she was stranded in the middle of a 3 lane highway with no emergency pull off. The car was going up a slope, so it could not coast out of the way. I took the car to a local transmission, he told me the transmission was shot and needed to be replaced. I then proceeded to take it to the dealership, which quoted me a price of $3500 to repair. The reason I want to let you know about this problem is first off, its unsafe. She could have gotten into a wreck and hurt herself. Second reason, this is a known problem with this particular car. There are literally hundreds of complaints online of exactly what I described to you. The dealership claims to have made a repair back in 2004, yet the problem still continues. The best case scenario for me is that you hold Honda liable for their known faulty transmissions. It shouldn't take someone getting seriously hurt over a known issue. In my case I was lucky. There was a police officer behind my wife when she had the transmission issue and he was able to prevent any cars from hitting her.

62 Transmission Slip Out Of Gear problem of the 2003 Honda Accord

Failure Date: 01/07/2009

I have a 2003 Honda Accord, it has 142,000 miles on it. The transmission suddenly started shifting hard on 1-5-09 then on 1-6-09 it would down shift erratically and then back up again. I took it to a trusted mechanic who told me the transmission has gone out and would need to be replaced or rebuilt. This is extremely unsafe as I was nearly rearended twice on 1-6-09 when it decided to downshift suddenly for no reason at all. 1-7-09 I went to the mechanic shop and picked up the car and drove it home and about 10 miles from my house I stopped a stop sign and after that it hasn't shifted out of 1st gear since then, I had to drive the rest of the way at 20mph with my flashers on pulling over so the cars behind me to would go around. As of right now it's sitting in my driveway and I am having to borrow friends cars or get a ride to work as it is my only mode of transportation and I do not have $3000 lying around for the repair. This I have found through my internet searches is a common problem and hasn't had a recall cause "it doesn't pose a safety threat" well I'm hear to tell you it does. Not only are you jolted forward into the steering wheel, with your seat belt catching you, ouch, when it shifts erratically but I had people swerving around me not to run into me this is insane. I have read literally hundreds of complaints about this problem recurring not only once but multiple times over again after the transmission is replaced. It is ridiculous that a recall has not been made. Are they waiting for someone to be seriously injured or killed in a collision due to the malfunction???.

63 Transmission Slip Out Of Gear problem of the 2003 Honda Accord

Failure Date: 12/23/2008

On 12/23/08 I left to drive around three miles to get take out food. It was just around 7:30 p. M. Several miles from my house the transmission started slipping out of gear. Knowing I could not make it to my destination I turned around and headed home. On the way home I had to stop for a traffic light and when the light changes and I accelerated the car moved forward slightly and stopped in the middle of an intersection. Shifting gears brought no result but finally, I put the car in park, turned off the engine and restarted the car. At that point the car would go into gear for a short time. I had to do that twice more to get home. This car was purchased new, had the transmission recall done in 2004 and has less that 58,000 miles on the odometer. The car is, at present, at a Honda dealer having a new transmission installed. I think the recall fixed some transmissions but not all.

64 Transmission Slip Out Of Gear problem of the 2003 Honda Accord

Failure Date: 12/15/2008

2003 Honda Accord ex v-6 automatic with 84,621 miles and failed transmission. Car has been maintained exactly According to manual. Went from normal driving with no problems to instantaneous gear slippage and high rpms. A quick internet search located thousands of complaints with exactly the same description. Transmission drops out of gear going immediately from 60-30 mph throwing passengers against seatbelts and huge accident potential for being rear-ended on the interstate. This is a very dangerous and highly common problem for this vehicle yet Honda is not recalling. They only offer a "goodwill" repair splitting the cost of a transmission replacement from a Honda dealer. The split is roughly the same cost as having an independent transmission shop do the work so how is that financially assisting the owner of the vehicle? considering the high rate of failure and Honda's admission of the problem, I am shocked that there has not been a formal recall for this issue.

65 Transmission Slip Out Of Gear problem of the 2003 Honda Accord

Failure Date: 11/13/2008

Son was driving my 2003 Honda Accord on the 10 freeway transmission slipped out of gear starting decelerating and the rpm's went way up. This happened over and over again with no prior warning of any kind. Drove to valley hi Honda in victorville where car was purchased and has been serviced. One block from the dealership the check engine light came on. Diagnosis is transmission failure, need full replacement. Only 122,475 miles. This seems to be an epidemic. There are hundreds of postings about this issue on line and american Honda has been advised over and over and still nothing done. There were transmissions recalls on these models but when taken in they checked the car out and said my vehicle not effected. This is a huge safety issue. A person is on a freeway and all of the sudden looses power! this could be deadly!.

66 Transmission Slip Out Of Gear problem of the 2003 Honda Accord

Failure Date: 10/10/2008

Transmission slips violently out of gear once the engine is warmed up, and the rpm's go over 2700. Occurs during acceleration (from a stop or when merging/passing on the highway) and when trying to maintain speed up an incline. The rapid deceleration when the car slips out of gear on the highway and especially on inclines on the highway sends all the surrounding drivers into evasive maneuvers to avoid collision. This event occurs whenever the car gets warmed up (after about 35-40 minutes of driving). Car is being sent to a Honda dealership for repairs, awaiting the final verdict but I believe they will be trying to charge me almost $6000 for a brand new transmission. As far as safety is concerned my car slipped out of gear on my way to work on I 97 northbound (main baltimore/annapolis artery) going up an incline in heavy traffic moving at approx 70mph. Several cars had to dive onto the shoulder and I had to go into the median grass to avoid a massive rear end collision during morning rush hour.

67 Transmission Slip Out Of Gear problem of the 2003 Honda Accord

Failure Date: 09/17/2008

In September, my '03 Honda Accord lx v6 started shifting hard from 2nd gear in morning traffic. After a few miles, the car would not shift out of 2nd gear. 1st mechanic couldn't replicate the issue. On the way home, dashboard lit up like a christmas tree; check engine light, tcs light, oil light. Had car towed to dealer; total transmission failure. In addition to the transmission dying, 6 months ago the dashboard/radio/temperature panel lights failed, the dome light doesn't work, the right headlight has needed to be replaced 3 times, the driver's side seat has always been loose. I am the original and only owner of this car and have had it repaired/maintained at Honda dealers since purchase. To have all these issues, plus have the transmission fail at 106,000 miles is unacceptable. Then to have to pay $2200 to have a used, remanufactured transmission installed is unacceptable. This is chronic problem for the '03 Accord. A recall should be issued, people should be refunded their money already paid and offered a significant discount to be placed into a safe new car. It is only a matter of time before someone is really hurt. . . Or has it happened already.

68 Transmission Slip Out Of Gear problem of the 2000 Honda Accord

Failure Date: 06/07/2008

I have a 2000 Honda Accord ex 4cyl 2. 3l 2 door. I purchased the vehicle used from duval Honda 1290 cassat Ave jacksonville florida 32205 (904-899-1900) in April of 2008. The car drove perfectly for about 30 days then the transmission started to slip while I was driving. Now the transmission jerks into every gear as it shifts and slips out of gear frequently while I am driving. Not knowing if a recall for this problem existed I have been shopping around for transmissions to find they cost between $1400 and $3000 to be replace to include labor. This is unacceptable because all stores are informing me the problem will return soon with this specific transmission. I have done several internet searches to find I am not thee only Honda owner with this issue and I am writing to inform you of my concerns with this vehicle also. The car was purchased with 68k miles or so and is now around 80k for miles. This are not normal areas of mileage where a transmission should be failing. I feel this unsafe and chronic problem should be fixed by Honda, either by a factory recall (100% paid for by Honda) or a total buy back of this vehicle since they have so blatantly and purposely sold defective and unsafe vehicles placing not only myself and my passengers but all drivers on the road in danger. If this problem continues I know that the transmission will cease to work and I may be responsible for causing a traffic accident and hurting someone because of this mechanical defect Honda has chosen to ignore. I am hoping this letter will help aide in a push to get Honda to rectify this problem.
