4 Front Seat Belt Retractor problem of the 1996 Honda Civic

Failure Date: 04/08/2005

I have owned 4 Honda Civic's over the past few years. An 1988 4 door sedan, 91 hatchback, 95 hatchback, and now a recently acquired 96 hatchback. They all have had problems with the seat belts failing to retract, and sometimes locking when not desired, like when turning my body to check my blind spot merging onto a busy highway , or backing up. They hang loosely around the occupant at times, and get shut in the doors damaging the interior panels because they fail to retract unless fed back into the retractor by hand. Many people have complained on the internet forums about this problem. I believe they are unsafe as they may not restrain the driver during an accident and may jam holding the driver tight in certain instances mentioned above. I have not replaced the seat belts at this time, I will be corresponding with our Honda dealer about replacement shortly.

The dealership was not providing any assistance to determine what caused the failure. Also the driver's side seat belt failed to retract, it was loose. This resulted in the consumer impacting the steering wheel. Prior to this incident the seat belt recall repairs were performed 3 times. The air bag did not deploy as well.

7 Front Seat Belt Retractor problem of the 2003 Honda Civic

Failure Date: 03/24/2003

My 2003 Honda Civic hybrid has a faulty seat belt. The belt locks up as the passenger tries to bring it forward. This condition also occurred in my other 4 Honda cars. The seat belts also tend to ratchet up after being connected and cause discomfort to the passenger as they become excessively tight. The dealer claims that (1) the ratcheting of the seat belts is associated with child safety protection and (2) the ratcheting should only occur when the belt is extended far out for attaching to a child safety seat. I have duplicated the problem in the presence of the service mgr. The dealer alleges to have replaced the front passenger seat belt; however the problem continues. I have had other experiences with american Honda allegedly replacing a part (reference complaint # 10008215, ignition switch recall) only to find that Hondas statements and claims are highly questionable. I now ask myself whether Honda might be engaging in deceptive and fraudulent practices to protect its profit line in disregard of the safety of its customers. Honda has failed to respond to my concerns about the advertised fuel economy of the hybrid. After meeting with a customer service representative, eric catherine, from american Honda on 3/24/03, the representative made certain commitments to address my concerns and promised to get back with me in a couples of days. one of the commitments was to perform a fuel consumption test on my hybrid. As of 6/12/03, neither the representative nor anyone from american Honda has lived up to their commitments. According to the fuel economy guide posted on the vehicle, the hybrid is supposed to get 48 mpg/city and 47 mpg/highway. Even the fine print states that the actual mileage should range between 40 56 in the city and 39-55 on the highway. I have been tracking/documenting my actual mpg. My mpg has never exceeded 35. Since fuel economy is the primary reason for purchasing the hybrid, potential customers should be extremely skeptical of the claims.

8 Front Seat Belt Retractor problem of the 1999 Honda Civic

Failure Date: 08/05/2002

I was traveling about 25 mph and was hit head-on by a driver in a Ford taurs traveling about 40 mph in the wrong lane. Both air bags in the tarus deployed and mine, in the 1999 Honda Civic did not deploy. The impact of the crash has caused injuries to my chest from the seatbelt which probably could be expected, and saved my life; and injuries to my neck and back from the forward thrust caused by the head -on impact. But, the air bags should have deployed in the Honda. It is unreasonable to think they would not deploy based on the degree of the impact . The Honda body shop manager said the other car hit the Honda above the frame rails, which is why they did not deploy. If that is the case, the air bags will not deploy in most crashes that this vehicle is involved in. This is a vehicle design defect. I have digital pictures of the damaged Honda . Sincerely, bob hamilton, csp.

20 Front Seat Belt Retractor problem of the 2002 Honda Civic

The seat belt does not fully retract, it only goes about half way in before slowing down or stopping. It then gets stuck in the door when you close the door. I would expect that this would weaken the belt. This has been a problem from day one. I've already had the car to the dealer to fix this and many other problems, and, even though I had an appointment, they decided that they were too busy to look into any problems. Honda has not acknowledged my "concern" submitted via the web before christmas.
