Honda HR-V owners have reported 30 problems related to automatic emergency braking (under the forward collision avoidance category). The most recently reported issues are listed below. Also please check out the statistics and reliability analysis of Honda HR-V based on all problems reported for the HR-V.
Driving at night on rural interstate with clear weather. Car driving at ~75 mph when the emergency breaking engaged. There was no traffic in front and thankfully none behind. The brakes locked in and the transmission downshifted to stop. Again nothing in front. If someone would had been behind me, they could not have stopped time with combination of braking and downshifting. Approximately 2 hours latter, this emergency braking system locked again for no apparent reason. The car has <10k miles and again the weather was clear with no rain, fog, etc. , pavement dry and no wind. There was limited traffic and no obvious bright street lighting to interfer.

On several occasions the automatic brights have turned on when there were cars at crossroads, and when cars were within sight. The regular lights of the car are repeatedly interfering with visibility of other drivers, as the lights are much too bright and angled right in other driver's eyes. We avoid driving at night due to blinding other vehicles and preventing crashes. We are flashed constantly. The automatic braking has turned on when there were no objects, pedestrians, or cars in front of the vehicle - nearly causing us to get rear-ended by the vehicle behind us. The brakes because sticky after only 16 months of use. The steering is sticky as well.

While driving, the car did an automatic hard brake for no reason. Traffic was accelerating after being stopped at a red light. The car in front of me was not braking and was accelerating away from me when suddenly the car hard brakes with no warning beforehand. It braked hard enough to throw me forward and cause traffic behind me to have to hard brake in order to keep from rear-ending me. There was an on ramp coming in near me but again that traffic was not in my lane. I have not complained to the dealership yet so it has not been reviewed and I have no reports since an accident did not happen. There were no warning lamps or messages before the event; although the brake light came on when the hard brake occurred, but not before. This was the first time it has occurred since purchasing the car about a year and a half ago. It was terrifying. It’s an hour later and I’m still shook up.
My vehicle keeps saying the sensors are not working see dealer.
The multipurpose camera that controls all advanced driver assistance fuctions malfunctions causing these systems to intermittenently not work properly or at all. It has caused the vehicle to fail to brake, and brake on its own without cause. Upon doing my own research I found numerous reports online of other owners of this make/model having the same issue. The problem first occured when my vehicle reached about 50,000 miles. It has been ongoing since. It caused damage to my vehicle when the automatic collision assist failed to brake for a vehicle that stopped abruptly in front of me. The alerts that these systems are not working do not always show up when the vehicle starts. Sometimes they stop working in the middle of the route. I have been in correspondence with the dealership who informed me the cost to fix this issue is $1968 (this does not include the $150 diagnostic fee while the vehicle was being serviced for a recall related to the fuel pump - I already paid to the dealer that fee and for which I've attached my receipt. ) there is clearly some issue with the part that was installed by the manufacturer. It makes the vehicle unsafe to drive not knowing if these systems will fail or malfunction at any given moment. I do not feel as the customer this should be my responsibility to have repaired, as many others report the same issue with this part. There is clearly a widespread issue that needs to be addressed in a recall in order to replace the faulty part.

When I'm driving, the safety brake has engaged while I was already braking. Also the emergency brake system has engaged while no car was on front of me. The closest car was on a side street, braked, and waiting for me to pass so they could onto the street after me.
While driving on the highway my power steering went out making it extremely hard to control the vehicle. As soon as I left the highway several indicator lights came on saying power steering not working, stop driving and call dealer. Also, accident avoidance not working, lane departure not working, etc. Called Honda roadside assistance and had the vehicle towed to a dealer. This was at 6:00pm on a Saturday (Nov 16). Vehicle was inspected on Monday Nov 18 and everything was working fine. The vehicle history showed a drop in battery voltage which Honda believes caused the warnings to go off. I'm concerned that I had no power steering which could have resulted in an accident.
The Honda sensing camera in my Honda 2019 hrv malfunctioned while driving and no longer gives me the safety features of Honda sensing. The camera does not hold a long life span it seems and Honda is not willing to help with the replacement. I think it is unfair and unsafe to allow customers to operate and use a car where the safety features will just out of nowhere disengage risking my life and my families life. The vehicle was brought into the dealership and the cost for replacement is incredibly large.
Faulty front camera sensor resulted in all adas systems to not work. (auto braking, auto high beams, lane keeping, adaptive cruise control). Forums have shown that this is an issue across platforms of the hrv, and happens at different mileage of vehicle. Mine happened at around 70k miles. Repair is $1800-$2500.
The contact owns a 2024 Honda Hr-v. The contact stated while driving approximately 60 mph, the collision mitigation braking system (cmbs) warning light illuminated, and the vehicle independently decelerated. Several unknown warning lights were illuminated. Additionally, the contact stated that the vehicle warned the driver of the vehicle proximity to another vehicle, or of driving out of the intended lane erroneously. The contact stated that while attempting to roll down the passenger’s side window, the window failed to respond as intended. The vehicle was taken to an unknown local dealer on several occasions and was diagnosed with an engine oil leak, debris in the window module, and the battery needed to be replaced. No additional information was available. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 10,000.
Driving and car suddenly will stop completely then accelerate. Has happened many times. Most recently last Sunday while passing a slowing car that was making a right hand turn into a driveway.
Had just parked my car at work and suddenly the back windshield shatters with a huge bam! sounded like a gun shot. I called the police and they say it had to of spontaneously shattered with no previous damage. It was terrifying.

The road assist / warning systems on dashboard malfunctioned, suddenly turning on and off, all at once. This caused a safety risk, by a startling distraction while driving, and worrisome stress while the car was at rest. The the problem was reproduced or confirmed by a dealer service rep who stated the car was unsafe to drive. They witnessed all warning lights, messages flashing on and off. This malfunction occurred, June 19-20, 2024. In retrospect, the break warning light would flash on for no reason and slightly break, or engine would stall or lose velocity while driving. The car is currently being serviced by the dealership. Their assessment is the front camera needs replaced. This car is under the warranty for mileage (not driven much during the pandemic), but due to the year, it is outside of warrenty. Obviously, the cause is not wear and tear, but a faulty camera. This is concerning, given the safety issue , should this be cause for a recall and repairs, including replacement part and services, the responsibility of the Honda company and not the car owner/driver.
I recently had my car repaired for the recall and a brake job (replacing pads and resurfacing rotors). A couple of days later, I was driving on the highway at about 60mph. Suddenly, the check engine light, parking brake light, brake light, and brake system light all went on. Additionally, the car was flashing neutral, drive, and parking gears while I was in park and driving. I started to slow down and realized that as my speed got slower, each new low speed became the highest speed I could go - pressing the gas with my foot did not increase the speed. As such, I drove to a nearby garage where the lights were reset. No mechanical issues were found with the car, nor was there a warning. I then called the dealership that had performed the service (dch paramus Honda in new jersey) and I was informed that it was unlikely they would be able to diagnose any issues as the lights had been reset so the car was driveable. It seemed very dangerous that these issues could happen at any time. The brake system was put in maintenance mode during my brake job, so I suspect this was a computer issue rather than a mechanical problem.
Almost all advanced safety features have stopped working including the ones selected and still others more such as lane keep assist, parking collision warning etc.
My hrv with 1800 miles suddenly stopped in an intersection only after owning the vehicle for 2 weeks. The Honda dealership tested the computer system, drove the car, and found no abnormalities. The dealership then asked that I pick up the car and drive it as they were unable to replicate the problem. If it were to happen again I was to let them know. I made it clear that I was not going to take the car back as I believed that the driving the car was posed a safety issue.

The problem started after sitting and talking on a phone with car running while waiting for groceries. About a week later, I started having on and off electrical system issues. And all the lights came on the dashboard with abs as the main one. If I locked my trunk over and over it would go away. During this time, I got locked in my car and out of my car. The key would not work properly. The trunk would not lock properly. The brakes would get stuck and I could not release them. The car would not move. This happened on and off for about two weeks. I took it to my mechanic. He ran the diagnostic test and nothing came back. He charged the battery and the problem went away for a couple of weeks. The problem started again and was especially frightening when I could not get out of my car. I took it to the dealer. They told me I needed new locks for the trunk, the door and that the car needed a new computer for the abs. I told them how is that possible. My mechanic did not find an issue and my car at that time didn't even have 100,000 miles and was a Honda. I switched from Nissan with transmission issues at 130,000 miles to a Honda which has great safety and performance reviews. They said there was no recall. I do not understand how a car with less than 100,000 miles has all of these safety issues that can trap me in the car and not allow me to brake properly at high speeds. I have done research online and find there are many complaints about the computer system abs sensor online and have heard this from a second mechanic who indicated he was dealing with the same issue for another customer. He disabled my abs system so I would not continue to have braking issues where it holds or does not seem to release properly, where there are on and off electrical issues with locks, locking, phone, etc. And the landmark Honda dealer in alexandria va wants to charge 3000 for a new computer for a car that is supposed to be safe and reliable and does not even have 100,000 miles.

For the second time, while driving normally, with no obstructions in my lane ahead of me, my car’s collision mitigation system abruptly and harshly hit my brakes while warning sounds deployed. This was enough to cause me and my passenger to leap forward in our seats; thankfully we were wearing our seatbelts. I have not been to the dealership yet for this issue, but will tell them at my first oil change. I’m really angry because the jolt this faulty sustem gave us was enough to trigger a panic attack or even a heart attack.
A few days ago several lights and warning items came adaptive cruise control, lane keeping assist problem, collision mitigation system problem, road departure mitigation problem, auto high beam problem and the break system light is on. I took it to my local Honda dealer- they said the monocular camera needed replacing and the break hold/emergency parking break switch needed replacing. Then 2 days later my low battery on my fob came on.
This air bag and seatbelt both malfunctioned clearly the air bag malfunctioned while I was about to cross over a bridge on an interstate . . Ciasing a projectile to shoot me in my eye knocking me unconcouiss and I wasn’t sure wht happened until hind sight and clearly the foremsic evidence supports this . . I woke up hitting. My head on window roof I was in a ditch barreling down a hill twords the bridges legs it stands on and I was already blind I couldn’t see shit nor was I even able to regain control of the vehicle due to the blunt force trauma to my eye and head it was enough to burst my eye ball give me a hematoma and a contusion in my aye and when I finally stopped at about 200 feet 250 maybe from where I left the road I dead stopped hit the concreate leg of the bridge my hands was brassed on steering wheel pushing bracing my self with everything I had so hard it broke my foot . . No air blag deployed on impact I would’ve felt it on my out reached arms tht was on the wheel and my face hit steering wheel about 70 it felt like . . It knocked me out cold . . No way in hell the air bag deployed on impact and the seat belt didn’t lock up no emergency stopping lane control none of tht bs worked . . A matter of fact this air bag caused me severe and worse injuries than the wreck did . . It wasn’t the air bag tht knocked my eye out it was a projectile from the air bag the bag never mushroomed up period …I have all the medical records and pics to prove the foremsics are consistent with causing the crash not stopping any injury’s and thts the seat belt included. .

While driving in the freeway trying to exiting all of sudden I feel my steering wheel move itself toward the curve and trying to break and steer itself at the same causing my vehicle to crash agaist the curve and go to on top making me loose control of steering wheel and crashing to the car infront of me, also the airbags didn't deploy at all, seatbelt did not protect me at all it was loose, I ended injur my head I requred going to the abulance to the emergency room. Police report was made and reported to my car insurance.
Subject: safety complaint – 2022 Honda hr?v – intermittent unintended acceleration while braking I am submitting this complaint regarding a serious safety defect in my 2022 Honda hr?v. On multiple occasions, the vehicle has unexpectedly accelerated while I was pressing the brake pedal. This behavior is intermittent, unpredictable, and dangerous. Description of the issue: while slowing down or coming to a stop, the vehicle will occasionally surge forward despite my foot being firmly on the brake. The engine revs and the vehicle attempts to move forward against braking force. This is not driver error. It occurs without any warning lights, alerts, or diagnostic messages. Operating conditions when the problem occurs: - low?speed braking (parking lots, stop signs, traffic - foot fully on the brake pedal - no cruise control active - no pedals obstructed - normal road and weather conditions safety concerns: this defect creates a clear risk - rear?end collisions - pedestrian injury - property damage loss of vehicle control the behavior is consistent with an electronic brake/throttle control malfunction, including possible issues with the brake pedal position sensor, accelerator pedal sensor, brake booster pressure sensor, or driver?assist modules (abs, esc, cmbs). Other hr?v owners have reported similar incidents. Dealer response: the issue is intermittent, and the dealership has been unable to reproduce it. No repairs have been performed. No diagnostic codes were stored. Requested action: I am requesting that NHTSA investigate this issue as a potential unintended acceleration defect affecting the 2022 Honda hr?v. This problem poses a significant safety hazard to me and to the public. Thank you for your attention to this matter. Vehicle information: • year: 2022 • make/model: Honda hr?v • transmission: automatic • mileage: 60,000 • VIN [xxx] owner information: • name: [xxx] • fountain hills arizona 85268 [xxx] information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. C. 552(b)(6).
The car randomly decides to slam on it's brakes, it's becoming more frequent as time goes on, the crv and accords of the same year are already recalled due to this issue and I'm sure the hrv will need to be added to this recall.
I was driving on a curved road, going approximately 25mph (safe speed) and a car came around the curve coming towards me (also going a safe speed). We were both on the correct side of the road, no danger of a collision, but the collision mitigation braking system started to brake. Fortunately, there was no one behind me and it only engaged for a second. A message to brake came on just before the cmbs engaged.
I heard of an ongoing investigation partaining to 2019 accords and cr-vs, so I wanted to add this information: I have a 2019 Honda Hr-v, and at least twice, the automatic breaking system has engaged erroneously/at dangerous times. The most glaring incident, I was driving in one lane at ~30 mph, and there was a left turn lane with a stationary car that I approached. I was not in the turn lane, I did not try to turn into the lane. My emergency brakes detected the car, one lane over, and unsafely slammed the brakes. I ground to a halt/5 mph, on a 30-35 mph road, and was almost rear ended. Luckily, nothing happened, but since then I have started to deactivate emergency breaking.
When you're driving down the highway your break automatically come on. The brake light comes on it goes beep beep and the brakes slams on really hard and you can hear you the brakes grinding. And there's nothing in front of you no cars or anything and it's done that three times on me just today. It's been doing that off and on for about 2 months now.
I drive my car and if I tap the break just a little bit too hard, because I have to stop quickly or at lest slow down, my breaks locks up and I skid… I’ve never had this before in any car that I have owned. And I have owned Hondas before. I told the dealership in richmond indiana and in tampa florida about this problem more than once. They both just brushed it off and told me it was normal. I have complained more than once because my brakes have locked up on me more than once. Sometimes, I am doing 35 miles an hour and while approaching a red light… I try to push down on my brakes a little bit and it may lock up. It’s not good… as I’ve said I have a many new cars and I have never had this problem.

Emergency brake will not engage. Automatic emergency brake sensor needs replaced. Unable to set emergency brake.
My car was in idle and suddenly all of these lights come on the dash board. The traction control light, brake system light, power steering light, the brake light, and the abs light. I was told that this was a abs module issue and the dealership haven't figured out how to remedy those that come in for this same issue.
On the highway and car completely came to a decreased speed of 60 from 75. Heavily revving. Rpm jumped continuously. From 60 to 20mph for a hood 15min constantly pulling over with hazards to let energy build while engine cooled. Leak huge leak under car out of no where 95000 +.
