Electrical System Problems of Honda HR-V - part 1

I was at my workplace’s parking garage today and was attempting to park my 2019 Honda Hr-v. While I was slowly attempting to park, the vehicle suddenly accelerated without my intention, and the brakes became unresponsive. The vehicle continued to accelerate uncontrollably despite my attempt to stop it. The vehicle crashed through/into the metal barrier cable at the edge of the parking garage. The barrier cable ultimately prevented the vehicle from going over the edge of the garage. If the barrier had not stopped the vehicle, I could have fallen several levels from the parking garage and potentially died. The vehicle eventually came to a stop after making contact with a neighboring parked vehicle. That vehicle was damaged during the incident. I am extremely fortunate that no one else was injured. I also did not sustain any major injuries, although my left knee is currently aching because my seat slid completely forward during the sudden acceleration. The vehicle is currently at a towing facility. Immediately following the incident, I was extremely shaken and was not in a condition to take the vehicle to a Honda dealership or independent mechanic. As of the time of this report, the vehicle has not been inspected by a Honda dealership, mechanic, or independent service center, so the cause of the incident has not yet been determined. Prior to the incident, the vehicle had been operating normally. There were no warning lights or other warnings displayed on the dashboard, and there was no indication of a problem with the vehicle before the incident. The vehicle appeared to be functioning normally as it had on previous days. I am reporting this incident because of the serious safety concern involving the sudden acceleration and apparent loss of braking effectiveness. I believe it is important for NHTSA to have a record of this incident, particularly because the consequences could have been fatal if the parking garage barrier had not stopped the vehicle.

When I started the vehicle ?lcd screen inside instrument cluster does not read cannot get fuel amount or mileage. It goes normal after driving 40 minutes. It happens every time since 9/20/2026.

Vehicle began making loud chainsaw noise. Took to original location of purchase (Nissan dealer - bought as used at 42k, no issues), was told that alternator, drive belt and tensioner were needing replacement as that was the location of noise. Took to Honda dealer where I was originally told just tensioner, now they are stating alternator is faulty along with tensioner. Car only has 72k and most of miles are highway miles. No warning signs other than loud chainsaw noise that was constant while car in drive and idling (no noise in reverse).

The multipurpose camera has internal failure and the unit is running at 130 degrees per diagnostic tests per mechanic. It's affecting the lane keep assist, automatic high beams, road departure, mitigation, adaptive, cruise control, collision mitigation system. These safety features are not working.

Has faulty much/under dash fuse box.

Lkas lights all came on and acc warnings. Brake system and auto high beams. Mechanic seems to think it’s the camera, car only has 84,000 miles on it and very well taken care of. This seems to be a big common issue with a lot of hrvs and it’s expensive to fix.

I am filing a formal complaint regarding two critical manufacturing defects on my 2018 Honda Hr-v that pose immediate safety risks and financial losses: 1. Critical safety issue (instrument gauge failure): the digital display gauge on the right side of the driver's dashboard consistently blinks out and displays entirely unreadable, corrupted characters. This failure makes it impossible to monitor the fuel gauge or know how much gasoline remains in the vehicle. This defect is highly temperature-dependent, becoming severely worse during colder months. Not being able to read the fuel gauge creates an immediate, dangerous safety hazard, risking sudden, unexpected engine stalling on active highways or getting stranded in hazardous conditions. 2. Manufacturing defect (paint delamination): the vehicle is exhibiting severe paint peeling and flaking on the roof in four distinct places. The exterior clear coat and base coat are actively separating from the underlying primer due to an inherent manufacturing adhesion failure. The vehicle features the white orchid pearl color (paint code: nh-788p). American Honda motor CO. Previously acknowledged this exact production defect by issuing a warranty extension under technical service bulletin (TSB) 19-064, extending coverage for 2016–2018 Hr-vs for 7 years. However, because this premature failure is only now manifesting on my vehicle, Honda corporate and local dealerships are refusing to cover the thousands of dollars in necessary repair costs, claiming the 7-year window has expired. Limiting the remedy to an arbitrary timeframe for an inherent manufacturing defect leaves consumers with a structurally degrading vehicle (exposure to rust and metal deterioration) & zero recourse. Respectfully request that the office of defects investigation compel american Honda to address the dashboard electrical failures and expand or reopen the remedy for known white pearl paint peeling defect to ensure consumer safety& manufacturer accountability.

Driving and all of sudden rear windshield shattered glass flying scared me! took it dealership and technician inspected vehicle and quoted that it shattered due to wires getting hot and shattered the glass. Of course isn't covered on my insurance but other consumers having same problems. My insurance company will not pay for rental while it's being repaired and it's costing me get it fixed.

Today while driving my car steeling wheel was super hard to turn and all my warning signals came on and it did an emergency brake on the highway … which was super dangerous.

The contact owns a 2022 Honda Hr-v. The contact stated that after a rainstorm, the driver’s side floor was wet. The vehicle failed to start days later. There were no warning lights illuminated. The vehicle had previously experienced a fuel pump failure. The vehicle was towed to the local dealer, who was unable to determine the cause of the failure. The dealer stated that the failure might be related to the fuse box underneath the dashboard, the wiring harness, and there was corrosion from a water leak. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was contacted and opened a case. The case was later closed. The manufacturer confirmed that there was no warranty coverage on the vehicle. The failure mileage was approximately 30,000.

Components of concern: collision mitigation braking system - while driving with no car in front of vehicle, car slammed on brakes - could have caused an accident. Yes, available for inspection. Also, lights went off and said to see dealer (have picture that I'm having issues attaching). Lights that went off were : collision mitigation braking system, road departure mitigation system, auto high beam, adaptive cruise control, some driver assist systems cannot operate (clear front windshield or poor viewing distraction) - all at the same time, even when it's no visible windshield issues. Yes, available for inspection. Want to take to Honda dealership but I'm being charged $80 for a diagnostic when this is a system issue. Not yet.

The contact owns a 2025 Honda Hr-v. The contact stated that after entering the vehicle, the vehicle failed to start, and the doors failed to lock. The vehicle was towed to the local dealer, who diagnosed the vehicle with battery failure. The battery was replaced, but moments later, after leaving the dealer, the tpms warning light illuminated. The vehicle was driven back to the dealer, and a software recalibration was performed, but the failure reoccurred. The next morning, the vehicle failed to immediately start. After the vehicle was restarted, it was driven to the dealer, and the contact was informed that the failure might have occurred due to an alarm failure affecting the battery. No further information was available. The contact stated that while attempting to switch to the left lane, the lane departure: lane keep feature malfunctioned, causing the vehicle to steer back into the right lane. The cause of the failure was not yet determined. The manufacturer was not yet contacted. The failure mileage was 16,800.

Having issues where the digital instrument cluster that shows fuel, mileage and odometer freezes and goes blank. Only seems to start working once the car if fully warmed up.

Bcm module failure. Car controls flash on and off. Vehicle won’t start. Alarm goes off randomly.

My husband and I were driving down the road on the way home from dinner in the rain when the car suddenly started braking very hard but very quickly. I thought at first that my husband had braked a little too hard all of a sudden, but he said he did not. Before he could tell me that though the dash started lighting up. Brake system failure, electronic parking brake failure, hill start assist problem, power-steering problem, and many others - pretty much every safety sensor that could come on. I then worried we would not be able to brake when needed, but luckily we made it home. As soon as we were able to this morning, my husband brought it to the Honda service to be checked out. We have to heard from them yet other that $230 to diagnose the problem. We were very lucky there were not others close to us when it happened. This could have been a very serious wreck if we were in traffic or going an even higher speed on the interstate(which we had been doing earlier).

Started vehicle this morning and part of led digital dash cluster display (odometer, fuel, temperature, trip, miles) goes blank and wouldn't recover. Shut down and restarted and lcd display then had glitches where it wouldn't display correctly, partially incomplete. According to forums and google searches, this is a known problem due to Honda bad solder joints (also dealer admit on a post). Bad as mileage would not be recorded/updated during glitch. Need manufacturer repair/replace under recall due to possible federal issue.

All of my braking/abs lights intermittently go on and off. My 2019 Honda hrv runs fine but when dealer looked at it they said it was the vsa and to replace would be over $4k. Dealer said eventually my vehicle may shut down if not taken care of. I am wondering if this is a common problem and if will be a recall?.

Odometer screen flickers when temperatures are cold outside. Once car is warm, the screen is visable. Until then, the odometer is blank and gas tank levels and mileage reamainging are unreadable.

The instrument panel with the fuel and mileage on it would go black or keep going back and forth to the original car code while I am driving. Next, the screen for my radio would shut down on me and restart itself while I am on the highway. Lastly, when I turn on my exterior lights at night, my interior lights that come on for me to see all the buttons went out for some of the buttons. The safety of myself and others was put at risk because the car could have shut down whenever someone was driving it. I took it to a Honda dealership and they did a diagnostic and the immediate attention result was internal electric failure. But Honda corporate declined to help me with repair assistance.

The vehicle has a recurring safety defect where it suddenly shuts off / stalls while driving. This has happened multiple times, including immediately after the dealership performed repairs and issued "clean" diagnostic reports stating no issues were found. Key details: pcu codes were present on the first visit but were not properly addressed. Repair orders contain clear inconsistencies, including claims of test drives and mileage that do not match the actual odometer readings. On the most recent visit, I did not authorize any further repairs, yet the dealership now claims the vehicle is "resolved" and ready for pickup. The vehicle has been at Honda dealerships for a total of 57 days across multiple failed repair attempts. I have refused to take possession of the vehicle due to the ongoing safety risk of it shutting off while driving.

About 3 hours into a 4 hour drive (while the car was only months old, with just 1800 miles), the sound switched from playing the radio at a normal volume to suddenly extraordinarily loud crackle, static, popping noises. The noise continued at this indescribably high volume for about one minute while I tried anything to help -- I tried adjusting the volume knob, unplugging my phone (which was plugged in just for directions), switching inputs, switching from fm to am, pushing the volume knob in to turn the whole thing off, etc. Nothing stopped the noise. After about 90 seconds, it stopped, but I still do not know why. After that, I could not get any sound to play. My ears rang the entire rest of the drive (another 1 hour). The noise was so loud and so sudden that it made me very upset and scared at what could have happened that luckily didn't - I could have easily been so startled to swerve into another lane, and if my 4 year old had been in the back, I am really scared to think of how traumatized he would be, how damaged his ears would be, and what else would have happened. My ears are still ringing today, a full day later.

Honda hrv 2025 malfunctioning when brake hold system is activated. Brake hold system lets individuals use the brake whenever needed without your foot having to be on the pedal the entire time. You can come to a red light, step on the pedal and take your foot off the pedal and the car will remain stopped until you press on the gas. Over the course of leasing this vehicle sometimes the brake system problem message would show but it would disappear right away. I let the dealership know of this issue when I got my first oil change but since the message wasn’t currently displayed on the dashboard they did not attend to it. Earlier this week the car suddenly glitches when brake hold is activated and deactivates itself followed by all kinds of messages on the dash. I will upload them here to see. From brake system,tpms, hill start assist all malfunction and when you turn the car off it doesn’t start back up automatically. This is a serious safety concern as the brake system malfunction and car not turning on can happen suddenly when driving causing injury to myself and those around me. A simple google search shows that this is common for this vehicle make, model and year however no recall has been filled.

The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic, where the fuse was replaced. The vehicle was repaired, but the failure recurred. While depressing the start button, the look in the rear mirror was displayed. The vehicle failed to start. The brake pedal was kicking back. The vehicle was taken to the local dealer, who was unable to determine the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was contacted, but no assistance was provided. The failure mileage was approximately 28,000.

While stopped at a traffic signal, the vehicle failed to restart when the light turned green. On another occasion, the vehicle stalled during operation and would not start. The engine would crank but there was no ignition. This created a safety risk because the vehicle was disabled in traffic and unable to move out of the roadway, increasing the risk of a rear-end collision or other crash. The vehicle was towed to a dealership for inspection. The dealer diagnosed a failed powertrain control module (pcm). The diagnosis indicated no spark and that the ignition coils were not receiving signal, although the crank sensor signal was present. The pcm was replaced, and the vehicle started and operated normally after replacement. No additional wiring, fuse, or grounding issues were identified. There were no prior warning lights, dashboard messages, or drivability symptoms before the failure occurred. The failure happened unexpectedly at approximately 52,889 miles. The replaced pcm is available through the servicing dealership if inspection is requested.

I have had a supplement restraint problem light on since I bought they vehicle. It was on and off intermittently for the past year or so, however now it will not go off. Upon inspection the wiring is damaged and there is not cover to the ground according to the Honda mechanic that looked at my vehicle. I have not had any service work done in the area where the srs box is located and they did not perform any further inspection on the system. Again, this was on when I bought my 2024 Honda Hr-v. The dealer was made aware and they advised me that it should be covered under warranty however nobody will fix the issue at this time. Please review and look into this issue as it has been noted in prior service bulletins for the srs system light to have issues.

The 2025 Honda hrv will stall and cut off after pumping gasoline. It will stall out at a red light and not crank back up. It says emissions problem on the dash. I believe it is the fuel pump but there is no recall like the others I have seen online. It’s a brand new car it shouldn’t be having problems like this!.

On Sunday, 02/08/2026, I parked briefly to drop something off. When I tried to restart the car, it was clicking but would not start. An engine light came on, and a flashing message appeared saying “park. ” I initially thought it was a battery issue, but the warning light remained on. The next morning, the car started, but the engine was locked and the vehicle would not move forward or backward. I called the Honda dealer, and the technician advised me to tow and bring the vehicle in as soon as possible. I restarted the vehicle, and the message on the screen cleared and the vehicle was engaged. I then dropped the vehicle off at the dealership. After inspection, they told me the front passenger seat weight sensor needed to be replaced, which is very expensive ($1,300) when I researched the, Honda has already recalled their vehicles for this same issue, and I am not sure I need to pay all this money for something that is caused by an identified defect of the vehicle system. I have a 2020 Honda hrv and the gas gauge flickers on and off. I have overheard technicians say this is a common problem with the hrv. The dealer wants to charge 177 to hook it up on the computer to diagnose the hrv. This hrv has only 20,000 miles on it. It has struts that are going bad and this hrv has had all the services done. My wife drives it 2. 6 miles a day. I think these issues need to be looked into further.

In a freezing cold parking lot car would not start. Had car towed to service center. Problem was gas gauge showing almost half a tank but car was out of gas. It is a bad sending unit. This is hazardous. There were no warnings or lights notifying me of a problem with the sending unit. I drive on highways at night. Potentially running out of gas on a busy highway with no warning is hazardous. Mechanic informed me this is a common problem with Honda. Over 500 dollars for a tow and diagnosis. Will cost $2200 to repair. If parts of the fuel pump were recalled why not the sending unit?????.

I have gone in for service many times since this recall was released and have been told each time that they do not have the pats.

I was driving to work and everything on the dashboard lit up. It actively showed that the car was changing gears while I was in traffic. I pulled over and the car reader gave me error - p0793. We have a 2018 Honda hrv with only 86,000 miles. The car became sluggish and sounded like something went wrong with the engine. There was no prior alarm or lights on dashboard before everything began blinking. There is a service bulletin for this issue by Honda - 21-047 cvt belt deterioration warranty extension. Car is currently at Honda dealership and they denied us a good will request because we were 11 months and 29 days out of warranty.

When I turned my car on, the airbag system (srs) problem light was on. I was worried if it was an airbag problem, or sensor problem, so I brought the vehicle in for inspection at two locations. The first location was an independent service center, in which I was told it was a sensor problem. They weren't available to repair or needed an appointment to thoroughly check the problem. Therefore, I made an appointment for the next day at a Honda dealership. I thought that my vehicle may have been a part of the safety recall from the service bulletin 24-036. Upon inspection and a partial diagnosis (they didn't took apart my vehicle near the wheel or touch screen/audio for the sensor underneath), I was told I had a sensor problem under the front passenger seat with the code error u3000-49. However, I was told that my vehicle was not covered under the safety recall. I'm afraid of whether my airbags will be working properly if the sensor isn't working. There was no warning lights, symptoms of problems, or messages prior to the sensor light turning on.

On cold days the dashboard is showing a foreign language.

Vehicle experienced critical ignition system failure while parked - the engine would not turn off despite repeated attempts over 20 minutes. The vehicle has a communication failure between the ignition switch and the body control module/keyless access unit, creating a stuck electronic latch circuit (b12d3 latch error). This is consistent with Honda TSB 20-116. The keyless start system warning appeared on the dashboard. Unable to shut down the vehicle through normal means, I was forced to manually pull the fuel pump fuse from the fuse box and then disconnect the battery while the engine was still running. This created an extremely dangerous situation requiring me to work in the engine compartment with live electrical systems. The vehicle lacks proper failsafe shutdown mechanisms. This communication failure and stuck ignition circuit poses serious safety risks including fire hazard, carbon monoxide poisoning if in enclosed space, and electrical system damage. No officially stated emergency stop solutions had worked for this vehicle included the triple press and long press.
