1 Automatic Transmission problem

Failure Date: 07/26/2203

When shifting in to reverse, transmission would make a loud bang and then start slipping. At the same time it developed a steady whine while in drive. Reverse gear totally failed while attempting to turn around on a busy road. Consumer had to push the vehicle backwards out the road to clear the curb and sidewalk. Afterwards, when reverse was selected, it made a loud sound like a bearing was spinning rapidly on a shaft. Consumer seen at least five service bulletins pertaining to his vehicle failure. Consumer contacted both canada Honda and american Honda. American Honda stated they couldn't do anything because the vehicle was built in canada, it fell into the gray area. Canada Honda stated they have a 5yr/100,00 mile warranty on their vehicles. Since the vehicle was tagged in another country, the u. S. , particularly hawaii there was nothing they could do. Consumer questioned how could Honda extend the warranty of 2000 and 2001 Honda's but not 1999 with the same defect. Consumer would like Honda to repair or replace the transmission.

2 Automatic Transmission problem

Failure Date: 06/03/2011

When I try to advance suddenly, accelerate or some times it's like I'm in neutral; and this is every time I used the van, my concern is that I can crash or someone could hit me, I tryed to repair it last year the same problem with the transmission but in less than a year I have the same problem again.

3 Automatic Transmission problem

Failure Date: 03/29/2011

Honda Odyssey 1999 model auto transmission issue. In my particular case, it occurred pulling out of a parking lot into a busy street and the Odyssey struggled to get up to a safe speed slipping it's way into various gears. I never thought about it but honestly this could have killed me and my family as we were attempting to pull out into a busy street. Thank goodness I was not rear ended or worse and was able to pull the van into the most immediate parking lot. When I searched in the internet there are lot many complains on Honda Odyssey about the similar issues and Honda has not done anything to address this issue so far. Would like to request to consider this case and make necessary actions at the earliest before we loose more lives due to this issue.

6 Automatic Transmission problem

Failure Date: 09/11/2010

The contact owns a 1999 Honda Odyssey. While driving approximately 30 mph he applied light pressure to the brake pedal and various unknown lights began to illuminate on the dashboard. The vehicle stalled and when the vehicle was restarted it began operating normally but the check engine light illuminated on the dashboard. The failure recurred approximately one week later and the vehicle was taken to an independent repair shop where he was informed that the failure was within the transmission. The vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer where he was informed that the transmission needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure and current mileages were 114,000. The VIN was unavailable.

7 Automatic Transmission problem

Failure Date: 08/10/2010

My husband and I purchased a used 1999 Honda Odyssey with low mileage for our family vehicle. We have had the van for approximately 2. 5 years. It currently has less than 100,000 miles, and the check engine light came on indicating there is a malfunction with the transmission. After researching this issue, I came across the Honda customer service website in which a recall was listed for this exact problem (but ironically not the same year). After calling jessica in the customer service dept. And requesting a goodwill extension on the warranty (since the vehicle has less than 100,000 miles) I was told there was nothing they could do for us (since the time had expired) even though through their own website they clearly have a defect with the transmission during this time parameter.

8 Automatic Transmission problem

Failure Date: 07/20/2010

I have 1999 Honda Odyssey who wont pass the emissions test. I am second owner to this vehicle and got it with 62,000 miles on it and only have used it for only over 33,000 miles only. Went to a mechanic and said that the transmission is the problem. Its no reason for only 93,000 miles on the vehicle to be going bad. Made a call to american Honda and got denied for repairs because they said its over the warranty. I don't understand I knew that they knew that their vehicle has defect and they should solve the problem. Who would buy a car less than a 100,000 mile then the transmission will go bad? I at least expect 150k or 200k before it goes down. Really disappointed on Honda automobiles. Need some help. Very costly repair. Needs Honda to repair this free of charge.

9 Automatic Transmission problem

Failure Date: 07/15/2010

The contact owns a 1999 Honda Odyssey. The contact was accelerating from a complete stop when the vehicle abnormally surged backward. The contact shut off the engine and then restarted. When attempting to accelerate a second time, the vehicle moved forward approximately five feet before independently stopping. The vehicle was towed to a local automotive repair facility. The contact was informed that the transmission was defective and would need to be replaced. The contact stated that the transmission was replaced less than one year prior to the recent failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not contacted. The VIN was not available. The current and failure mileage was unknown.

10 Automatic Transmission problem

Failure Date: 07/11/2010

1999 Honda Odyssey - driving on the express way with the family in the car when the dash light and tcs light come on. Van would not shift or keep speed. We were almost rear ended because of the decreasing speed. This will be the fourth transmission for this van. Honda did cover the first three but has adamantly stated they will not cover this one. Clearly there is an issue with the transmission on this model. Because this is a Mini van in which families are driving, Honda puts you and yours at risk with a repetitive issue.

11 Automatic Transmission problem

Failure Date: 06/30/2010

I purchased a 1999 Honda Odyssey ex with about 20,000 miles on it from a Honda dealer as certified pre-owned in 2001. Transmission had already been replaced once. I replaced it under Honda certified warranty in 2005. Vehicle turned 149,000 miles and transmission (confirmed by santa monica Honda) must again be replaced meaning car needs a 4th transmission. Honda will not extend any financial assistance to me nor will they release factory transmission to me saying they are holding factory parts for "good will" replacements! this has been a chronic problem with this vehicle. How can they do this?.

12 Automatic Transmission problem

Failure Date: 02/14/2010

Transmission needed to be replaced at just over 56,000. Did not have extended warranty coverage protection so was entirely absorbed by me. Incident failure happened while on highway and safely made it back home with prayers and cautious driving techniques like a bad theme park ride. Cost was over $2,000. 00. Replaced in Feb. 2010.

13 Automatic Transmission problem

14 Automatic Transmission problem

Failure Date: 07/13/2009

My 99 Honda Odyssey has been babied and taken care of by myself. I have never had a serious problem with the vehicle. I remember getting a letter from Honda saying the trans. Had an extended warranty of 10 years 100,000. I always had the trans. Serviced at my mechanic with a t tech service every 25,000 miles. At 71,000 miles I noticed the trans. Started to slam into the gear when it decelerated. I called a Honda dealer and made an appointment to have the trans. Looked at. I was told the trans. Was not going into 1st gear but directly into 2nd gear. It shifted fine when I took it their. I told them it was slamming into gear when it downshifted. Anyway I was informed the warranty had expired. I call american Honda. I was informed again that the warranty had expired in 2006 at 109,000 miles. Honda did extend the warranty but not 10 years. I received a factory warranty of 3 years 36,000 mile warranty and they extend the warranty to 7 years 109,000. That extended warranty included the first 3 years. So they really extended the warranty 4 years. They told my information and would determine if Honda would pay for the cost of a new trans. . I was told it takes 2 days to make their decision. I was called the next day by gloria of american Honda and she took the information again and then was asked what I wanted Honda to do. When I told her to pay for the repair of my trans. . She informed me that was not going to happen. I then said then you have made your decision. She told she has not made no decision yet. I informed her their were over 2000 complaints at NHTSA about the Honda Odyssey 99 to 2002 transmission. And extending the warranty and replacing trans. With remaufactured ones with the same problem and failing again later leaving the $4000. 00 repair to the owner. Honda redesigned the trans. In 2003 and they have no failures. It has been 1 week and I still have not heard from american Honda on their decision. I am joining a class action suit to get this car recalled.

15 Automatic Transmission problem

Failure Date: 12/26/2008

My Honda was very slow to start in the last couple months. Thought I wasn't warming it up long enough once the weather turned colder. Once it was running for a few minutes, it was fine. My check engine light was on but I have been haunted by this light for a couple of years. Usually something minor. One time I had my cat converter replaced. My son and three of his young friends took the van to the snow. I insisted he take the van over his car because it was "safer". There was heavy holiday traffic. On an incline, he went to push the pedal down and the car would not go forward. It started drifting backwards! very dangerous in major traffic. He drifted onto the shoulder, put the emergency brake on called aaa. These kids were stranded in the snow until the tow truck arrived. It just stopped! incredible! I replaced the tranny once before while the car was under its original extended warranty. Replaced the tranny at 90,200 miles. Now at 147,000 miles, I need another transmission. Since the second transmission was comped, there was no warranty on the replacement tranny. It was not replaced with anew tranny but a re-manufactured unit. Was Honda suppose to replace it with a new one if my vehicle was still under warranty?.

16 Automatic Transmission problem

Failure Date: 12/09/2008

1999 Honda Odyssey transmission replaced at 68,000 miles by a Honda dealer because of shifting issues. Honda replaced this for free. Transmission needs to be replaced again at 137,000 because of shifting issues. I cannot get 70,000 out of a Honda transmission. The van has a hard down shift when slowing down. Honda has a serious problem with this transmission.

17 Automatic Transmission problem

Failure Date: 11/29/2008

I purchased my Odyssey used with about 90000 miles already on it. I was unaware of the transmission issues these vehicles had until I experienced it myself a little over a year ago. I had a 3rd party warranty which covered the repair of this transmission and now about a year later and only 12000 miles my vehicles transmission is dead again. Like most cases it starts with a jolt in the vehicle followed by both the check engine and tcs light coming on. Well I have had to deliver my vehicle back to the 3rd party transmission repair facility to fix my car under warranty but they cant seem to get it right. I have now been without my vehicle for 6 months and it is still at the shop. I Honda could own up to their problems and fix this the correct way I could bring it to the dealer and have them fix it without having to repay for yet another transmission.

18 Automatic Transmission problem

Failure Date: 11/09/2008

I have been having transmission problems with this van since 2003, Honda did replace the transmission in January 2004, the van is a 1999, at that time I had about 30000 miles on it, October of 2007 my transmission completely went out while I was driving my son home from a sport event on the highway, both of us were very scared seeing as it just wouldn't accelerate, thank goodness no one behind us or they would have hit us, I was able to get to the side of the i90. I called Honda is regards to this asking what the warranty was , they told me it was only a 3 year warranty on the replaced transmission, I had 75000 miles on it. . So I went to a local shop and now 1 year later I was driving home from visiting my son at the university of iowa and my van was jerking whenever it was shifting into a different gear. . . Again a great hazard on the road when you are in traffic with cars going 60-90 miles per hour. . . This is a great defect on Hondas part with their transmissions. . . I only have 83000. On this van and it is due for a 4th transmission, doesn't that sound un real. I also have my van is working order and to the mechanic often.

19 Automatic Transmission problem

Failure Date: 10/15/2008

Tcs/check engine lights came on. Previous owner confirms that tcs/check engine light had turned on before. In both cases, the repair shop reset the lights and everything seemed fine. On the most recent shop visit, the lights were reset and the repairman commented on a slight late shift between 1 and 2. I hadn't noticed anything up until this point, so I decided to wait and watch for the shift issue. 6 months later, the late shift problem has grown. This causes the vehicle to rev too high and shudder when the shift is finally accomplished. It is sometimes possible to apply the gas pedal in a very specific manner to avoid the stutter. Otherwise it occurs during every shift between 1 and 2. Having found many other examples of the same problem online, I have not had any work done (pending a request that Honda pay for the repair).

20 Automatic Transmission problem

Failure Date: 09/03/2008

I have a 1999 Honda Odyssey lx minivan with 54k miles. The transmission slams into gear. I brought it to hempstead Honda and they said I need a new transmission. When I'm on the highway and brake and reaccelerate, the car jerks forward almost causing an accident.

21 Automatic Transmission problem

Failure Date: 07/15/2008

At traveling 50 to 60 mph I have noticed recently a shimming and shuttering of my car with a loss of power while trying to accelerate. It felt like the front wheels were loose. It lasted a few seconds and then stopped. This has happened 3 or 4 times now. Also, the check engine light came on and at the same time so did the tcs light. That light stayed on until the engine was restarted then after driving about 10 minutes it came on again and stayed on. I use my car all the time with kids and am concerned for their safety as well as mine.

22 Automatic Transmission problem

Failure Date: 11/20/2007

Transmission shifting hard, dealer said it needs replaced after checking it on computer. He said Honda had been replacing some of these in the 1999 Odyssey model, but would not replace mine because the car has too many miles.

23 Automatic Transmission problem

Failure Date: 07/01/2007

1999 Honda Odyssey with transmission problems. Consumer states that the check engine light illuminated and the transmission needed to be replaced. Honda told him they would give him a re-manufactured unit.

25 Automatic Transmission problem

Failure Date: 03/22/2007

Tranmission failure and subsequent replacement.

26 Automatic Transmission problem

Failure Date: 02/08/2007

Transmission stopped functioning several times during a trip, creating a dangerous situation (had instances of near misses on the road) contacted Honda motors, transmission was replaced ,but labor was charged ($800. 00) it was a defective transmission installed on this vehicle and Honda should be 100% responsible in addressing this situation. There are thousands of Honda Odyssey owners that have been affected adversely by said defect (some without any help from the manufacturer).

27 Automatic Transmission problem

Failure Date: 01/10/2007

Myself and many others can attest to having two to three transmissions installed in 1999 Honda Odyssey's . Breakdown occurring during acceleration or highway driving is particularity dangerous. I have sold vehicle after it occurred a third time. I was charged $3,500 to install a new one at 100,000 miles because of warranty.

28 Automatic Transmission problem

Failure Date: 10/21/2006

The 1999 Honda transmission failed on 126000 miles, paid 3000 for a replacement on November 2006, now is June and with only 128000 it is doing it again.

29 Automatic Transmission problem

Failure Date: 09/14/2006

We bought a 1999 Honda Odyssey from carmax and the first week that we got the car the check engine light came on and we took it to carmax. According to them they fixed the problem and everything was fine the engine light went off. Then when it came back on for the same problem they apparently fixed it again. This happened a few times. Now we didn't have warranty and our van was acting up. The transmission would give a jerk when going from 1st to 2nd gear. The egr ports were clogged and the catalytic converter was messed up from day 1. We took it to our Honda dealership and they said it wasn't the transmission, but it was. About a 4 months later it got really bad and we had to get our transmission rebuilt, the ignition switch problem started also (the car engine would stall randomly and it we would have to stop the car on the shoulder of the freeway and restart the car going at 60 mph+), now we spent 2500 bucks to get everything fixed. But now our electrical system is bad. The in dash lights don't work and the back lights don't work. The doors just died for some reason. One second the handles would work and the next second the handles are dead from inside. Our alarm system doesn't work either because of the electric problem. All we want is our car to be fixed. We've been lied to by carmax and the Honda dealership over and over. Can you guys just help us fix our car?.

30 Automatic Transmission problem

Failure Date: 09/28/2004

Vehicle started when ignition turned on, but gear would not shift. After many failed attempts to shift the gear from park to reverse, we had to follow the Honda Odyssey user manual directions( pg 201) and unlock the gear to neutral using the car key- you then insert the key in the ignition and turn the van on.

31 Automatic Transmission problem

Failure Date: 06/11/2004

Well, of course, wouldn't you know. . . On Friday, June 11, 2004 at 5:00 pm and approximately one month later (from 05/10/04), my check engine light came on for the fifth time since 10/06/03. Dale at the dealership told me to call if it came on again and bring it in ASAP. The earliest the dealer could see me is Wednesday, June 16, 2004. My mileage is currently 99,383. Honda has extended their tranmission warranty for 7 years or 100,000 miles. Looks like 100,000 miles will be here before I know it. My husband and I are sharing a vehicle because I refuse to put anymore miles on this car. Can't something be done? it seems this transmission problem is wide spread.

32 Automatic Transmission problem

Failure Date: 03/15/2004

At 5 years and 64,000k our 1999 Honda Odyssey has had to have its transmission remanufactured. It seems a bit early to be having transmission issues given the amount of mileage it has. Our concern is that the extended warranty only goes to 7 years and 100,000k. We kept our last Honda for 14 years and 160,000k. Do we have any recourse if we have transmission problems after 7 years?.

33 Automatic Transmission problem

Failure Date: 01/20/2004

Transmission went out at 94. 000.

34 Automatic Transmission problem

Failure Date: 01/07/2004

Well, the check engine light did come back on less than one month later. This is the third time in three months. On 01/07/04, they checked the car again and said that it was the converter and that while they were in there I should also replace the O2 sensor. I agreed to it and my estimate (for parts) was now $742. 83. After ten days, I called the dealer to see if the parts were in and they were, but no one bothered to call me. On 1/21/04 with check engine light still on and at 88,846 miles, my converter and sensor were replaced for a total of $857. 81.

35 Automatic Transmission problem

Failure Date: 12/17/2003

On 12/17/03, I brought my vehicle back to the Honda dealer because my check engine light came on again. This is the second time in 2 months that the check engine light has come on. I told them that I am still feeling some hard slippage on downshifts. With approximately 82,500 miles on my car, the technicians believed it was the catalytic converter. The estimate was $701. 90. They said they would have to order the part and I would have to prepay. I was uneasy about this (and not to mention the amount of money), so they reset the indicator and said that "it wouldn't do any damage to the car if I didn't fix it now. All that would happen would be that the light would continue to come on.
