Five problems related to automatic transmission torque converter have been reported for the 1999 Honda Odyssey. The most recently reported issues are listed below.
Torque converter/ transmission failed with 104,800 miles on 12-year old vehicle despite being driven primarily on the highway and being meticulously maintained. Honda's extended warranty (offered as settlement of a class action suit) ended after 7 years despite low mileage.
I own a 1999 Honda Odyssey ex. It currently has 109,000 miles on it. In 2003, the transmission was replaced by Honda corp. Due to default in the transmission. This apparently 'used' transmission' was additionally guaranteed for 3yr/30k miles. Engine light comes on, and repairing Honda dealer reports transmission requires replacement.
As others had noted, check engine light diagnostic reveals transmission and torque converter codes (at 55,000 miles). Rough shifts at higher-than- normal rpm's and sluggish during acceleration. Independent garage and dealer confirm the diagnosis. Mentioned to dealer about previous customer complaints as well as Honda's transmission warranty extension for 2000 and 2001 model years. Rebuilt transmission ordered and installed by dealer. Road test finds slipping in gears so a 2nd one is ordered and installed by dealer. Honda did not charge but should have extended warranty for 1999 models in the first place. Hope the duplicate complaints entered by certain individuals does not dilute odi's determination or investigation of how widespread this problem is.
Automatic transmission failed after check engine warning lamp and tcs lamp turned on. Code# p0740 which is torque converter was the problem. Ts.
Engine check light came on at about 72,000 miles. Took the car in to leigth Honda and they told me to replace the solenoid. I paid $400 and it was replaced . About 1,000 miles later the engine check light came back on. This time took it to auto park Honda in cary, nc. It had a torque converter failure code and transmission was replaced with a new transmission. I have had the repaired van back for two weeks and the engine check light has come back on again. We are waiting for auto park's response. I have been rea many, many complaints about the exact same problem at the autofan. Com web site.
