21 problems related to electrical system have been reported for the 1999 Honda Odyssey. The most recently reported issues are listed below.
Vehicle turns off randomly while in motion on the street.
Several times over past two weeks vehicle has stalled unexpectedly shortly after starting or while driving - dashboard lights and gauges (including odometer) all blank except 3 blinks of green "key" light (immobilizer indicator); accessories stay operational (radio, etc) but engine shuts off. Will re-start after a few tries, typically; failed tries include engine starting while key held in start position but dying immediately when returning key to "run" position. Will stay running if key is held between "start" and "run" location. When this happened while driving, was able to shift to neutral while coasting and restart the engine, holding key near start, to get enough runtime to get the car to a safe place off the road. Recall to this effect apparently was performed back in 2002-2003; looks like recurrence of same problem?? what are my recourses?.
Recently, while traveling on interstate 94, the check engine light came on in my vehicle along with a light that reads "tcs". Shortly after these two lights came on, my vehicle began having problems accelerating. When I drive my vehicle, I have problems with the van taking off and maintaining stability once in motion. During travel on highways, freeways, interstates, or city streets, my vehicle violently shifts from first gear to second gear when I press on the accelerator, causing it to slow down unexpectedly before jerking into motion in the middle of traffic. Also, during recent night time travel the headlights began to flicker, go dim then get bright again. The vehicle also slows down when turning corners then will suddenly jump into motion. Also, the driver side passenger door recently went off track causing a screaming alarm to sound during travel. I have recently had to have the high pressure power steering line replaced because it had a hole in the upper hose. I am extremely concerned that the poor acceleration of my vehicle and the violent jerking from first to second gear will cause an accident. My vehicle is my only mode of transportation to work, school and any important place that I need to travel to.
I'm continuously having problems with both slider doors jamming ,sticking shut, saying they aren't shut all the way. Used to be able to fix by pulling fuses to rest doors. . Now they won't even open manually at times. Passenger side files open while driving.
Driving the vehicle without sputtering or otherwise indicating a problem all gauges and engine cuts out, I can put the vehicle in neutral and usually it will restart and go, but lately not all the time. It may take getting to the side of the road putting it in park and restart 3 or 4 times and then stay running and not have a problem for a few days. When it does this on the interstate traveling at 70 mph with no warning, this can be dangerous for the person behind me. When it stops running and I lose power steering, brakes and coasting trying to restart while in neutral praying I don't get hit from behind as I navigate decelerating cutting across traffic to the shoulder. Scary. Chances are my airbag won't work either at this critical time if the brakes fail to stop me. All the built in safety features are not working.
The contact owns a 1999 Honda Odyssey. The contact stated that while driving at approximately 70 mph, the key warning light illuminated and the vehicle stalled. The vehicle could be restarted. The failure recurred on multiple occasions. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 95,000.
Driving along and engine stopped, dash was black. Stopped and put it in park and turned on and off three times before dash lit up and started engine. This has happened three more times since.
While driving in the highway at 65 mph, my 99 Odyssey engine died and every thing turned off !! of course the steering wheel became too hard to operate and steer. Fortunately I was at far right lane. Than it started doing the same thing more often. I wonder if the Honda dealers would fix that free of charge, since I heard that was a recall about the same problem.
As I merge onto the highway from the ramp the engine shutdown suddenly without any warning I almost got rear ended. I was so scare! luckily, I was able to pull the van to the shoulder but multiple start the engine the engine shutdown again. After waiting for about 3 minutes I am able to start the van and run fine without any problem. After 15 minutes driving on the right lane of the highway and I got off to the residential street for about 5 minutes and at the stop light the engine stop again.
There was a recall back on 4/25/00 for the door latch assembly. The recall # was 00v119000. I'm having the same exact problem again with the door not closing all the way. I called hennessey Honda in woodstock, GA and they told me that they didn't have that recall on record. Then they went on to say that they won't fix it again. I checked the history of the vehicle recalls and don't see where this was done. Why should I have to pay for this repair when it was already dtermined that it's a manufacturer defect? is there a time limit on how long Honda will fix this repair for free?.
The passenger side sliding door on my 1999 Honda Odyssey has failed to open on many occasions and I didn't think of it as anything more than a nuisance. This time one of my children's fingers was caught in the door and we were unable to open the door either from the inside or the outside for several minutes until we got a passerby to force it open. His finger was significantly more damaged than if we had been able to immediately open the door, not to mention the panic and distress and being trapped.
Almost had a real live auto accident. Then researched and came across NHTSA recall #03v423000. Called Honda, and they said, "not our problem, it doesn't apply to your VIN". End of conversation. So, what recourse do I have? what are your recommendations? is there someone else higher up I can contact as opposed to the Honda 800 #? thanks.
On August 16, 2010 at 3:12pm, I received email stating: "after inspection the tire it is not on the recall list. " message was sent to mfr. On may 8, 2010: to customer service; I purchased 98t futura 2000 lte part number 8694568 2156516 and when I was on i95, I had to exit to go to the nearest dealer of tires (hoping to avoid a towing bill) being firestone tire place just off of i95 at the palm beach lakes blvd. Area in palm beach county, florida. Your tire acted like a flat tire would being on a major highway. Your tire was looking very wavy and when taken off the vehicle looked like a partial twisted pretzel. I got my vehicle re-aligned, as well as, purchased a new firestone tire! replacing tire with approx. Less than 30 days from your tire purchase. I was going out-of-town to my dad's home, a trip approx. 100 miles away one way when this happened in route. I kept the tire and at the time I thought it was an isolated defective tire and was going to write to the manufacturer for remedy. I'm just discovering that there is a recall on this particular tire and expect to be compensated for! truly yours, [xxx] and please send any mailings [xxx] information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. C. 552(b)(6).
The van suddenly shuts itself off (engine stalled, no radio, no lights on dash) while driving. It feels like a "parked" vehicle moving on the road.
Engine stopped while driving on turnpike. Restarted while trying to get off of the road. Honda dealer replaced start switch. It was replaced at 65000 miles under recall. Current mileage 127,000 miles. I guess that it has to be replaced every 60,000 miles or so. $385 to replace it this time. Honda said that they would replace it only once. Mechanic said that it is the same as the original. Never improved upon. Definitely a safety hazard.
Sliding door always was defective from 2006. Always not closing to the end. One slider door outside handle not working from 2006, probably cable broken inside of slider door. Sliding door handle is lose. My wife not using slider door more than 10 years, because it stock and can't open at all. Front door lock also not working correctly. Also I want replace all air back in my Mini van, I never receive any paper recall from dealer.
Beginning in 2000, when the car was less than one year old, we have experienced major equipment failures. First, the egr valve malfunctioned; it was eventually repaired at Honda's expense. Next, one of the motors for the side power doors failed. That cost approximately $800 to repair. Then, the transmission failed, and Honda eventually covered the full costs under an extended warranty. For at least four years, we were plagued with an erratic "check engine" light, and sometimes the computer code was inadequate to direct a repair. In 2003 the radiator rotted out, and the replacement/repair cost us $800. In 2004 the catalytic convertor failed, and that replacement/repair cost us $1400. On July 22, 2005, the rear a/c vents failed to cool, and I called for an appointment at our local dealer to have that checked and repaired. The repair was scheduled for July 25, 2005. When I was driving the car on July 23 with the a/c turned on (the front vents continued to cool), the engine died while I was driving at a speed of 45 mph on a local highway. I managed to pull off into a nearby parking lot, and I was able to restart the car after turning off the a/c. It is now at the dealer's shop, and the labor costs alone to determine the cause of the a/c failure will cost more than $350. After inspecting the system for more than three hours July 25, the dealer's mechanic still could not locate the source of the problem. Needless to say, I hate this car! I have had many more problems than I ever expected, and the responses from american Honda and from the local dealer have been disappointing. Neither establishment knows how to relate successfully to customers. This car has been a real lemon, and I am struggling with my decision about what to buy to replace it. Although Honda has a good reputation, I have not found this car to be reliable. In fact, it is a major source of stress in my life, causing me to gnash my teeth when I am driving it, for I have no confidence in it at all.
Nar 03/03/2003. The consumer stated while driving at any speed, the vehicle suddenly stopped and all power was lost. The consumer stated everytime this happened, the vehicle would start right up with no problem.
1999 Honday Odyssey minivan, stalls at various times during operation. At start, at low speeds, at highway speeds. No warning, vehicle just loses power and you must pull over and restart. Five such failures since December, 2002.
Consumer stated the sliding door will not shut properly, it keeps popping open. Door ajar light is constantly on. Cause is unknown. The doors pop back out after closing, causing the ajar light to come on and alarm to sound, alarm fails if the vehicle is put in park or neutral. Doors have been serviced, switches and latches have been replaced.
Alert buzzer of both sliding doors go off intermittently while driving. The vehicle has been taken to the dealer 5-6 times. The tracks and contacts have been cleaned, does not remedy the problem. Due to the constant buzzing of the door alarm as if the door is opened, consumer resulted to turning off the automatic door feature, but when using the doors manually, the doors are hard to open.
