36 Transmission Failure problem

Failure Date: 11/05/2010

2001 Honda Odyssey. Transmission defective. Again. The original was replaced by Honda under extended warranty around 60,000 miles (approximately 4 years ago). Second transmission failed the other day with less than 40,000 miles on it. Clearly, Honda did not replace the transmission the first time with a transmission that corrected the design flaw. Rather, they installed a rebuilt transmission with the same design flaw. Honda was fully aware at the time they faced a design flaw - but installed a flawed transmission anyhow. This was done most likely knowing that these transmissions would "on average" make it at least through the warranty period and become the owners problem afterwards. I, personally, consider such behavior potentially fraudulent. That is, installing something that known to be defective and subject to early failure relative to what the expected lifespan of the system is as measured against the norm and within statistical reason. I am aware of the class action lawsuit and outcome (minor extension of warranty). I am filing this complaint simply for record and out of disappointment for Honda's actions.

37 Transmission Failure problem

Failure Date: 10/24/2010

Transmission failed in June of 2006. Honda installed a remanufactured transmission at 66k miles. Transmission failed again at approximately 108k miles on October 24, 2010. Remanufactured transmission lasted only 42k miles. Honda refused to take responsibility for the transmission. Honda refused to admit that the remanufactured transmissions have the same problem as the old transmissions. Honda said that unless there is another class action suit, they will not be taking any type of responsibility, even if the transmission fails again after 40k miles. Honda said that they considered the total miles on my car as the warranty period and that there was no warranty period for the remanufactured transmission. Vehicle transmission failed in the middle of a busy road. I had my 9 year old daughter with me.

38 Transmission Failure problem

Failure Date: 10/04/2010

Transmission failed during a trip.

39 Transmission Failure problem

Failure Date: 09/23/2010

2001 Honda Odyssey; transmission failure. Bucks and shifts erratically. Engine light comes on, d4 light blinks. Extremely dangerous to drive, as it lurches forward uncontrollably. Just started with this problem last week; car currently has 95,000 miles. Original owner; maintained the car privately once the dealer warranty was expired.

40 Transmission Failure problem

Failure Date: 08/20/2010

2001 Honda Odyssey 4 speed automatic transmission is failing. Clutch slippage going from 2nd to 3rd. Service shop says repair and replace 3100 plus tax. Many many complaints regarding this problem from other alike vehicle owners. Clutch slippage has been going on for over 2 years. Honda extended the warranty on this but my problem started a few months after the warranty for my year of Honda expired. Family of 6 and unable to pay for replacement .

41 Transmission Failure problem

Failure Date: 07/23/2010

At 99k miles my transmission was replaced by Honda dealership. At 143k the transmission failed again. The check engine and tcs light went on and remained on. The car would rev but there was no power. After letting it rest car would regain power, but soon power would be lost again. I was able to get it to a mechanic who said it was my transmission, but I hoped it just needed a transmission fluid flush so I had that done. Nope. Car continued to lose power so I had it towed to the dealer who originally replaced the transmission 3 years prior. They confirmed the diagnosis as a failed transmission (after only 43k miles).

42 Transmission Failure problem

Failure Date: 07/11/2010

I have a 2001 Honda Odyssey and one week after purchasing it in 2007 my transmission went out and it had to be replaced. Today as we were driving the transmission went out again. The new transmission that replaced the bad one only has 40,000 miles on it. I have been researching this problem and have found out that Honda knows about this problem, but is not willing to fix the problem correctly and that leaves the consumer to continue to replace the transmissions at a high cost. I do not have the money to replace this transmission but I also do not have the money to buy a new car. This car transports my family of 5 and is now sitting at a shop. Something has to be done about this problem and it needs to be taken care of ASAP. Honda is the only car I would ever buy, until now and it seems that everyone having these issues feels the same way. So when is something going to be done? is it going to be when there are fatalities due to the transmission failing during rush hour and you can't move it? thank god we could coast to safety, but it could have been fatal. I certainly hope you are not waiting for this to happen.

43 Transmission Failure problem

Failure Date: 06/25/2010

The contact owns a 2001 Honda Odyssey. While driving at 50 mph, the vehicle stopped accelerating and came to a stop without warning. The engine continued running, yet the contact was unable to shift into any gear or accelerate. The vehicle was towed to an authorized dealer where the contact was advised that the transmission failed and would need to be replaced. The manufacturer would not provide any assistance. The failure and current mileage was 177,000.

44 Transmission Failure problem

Failure Date: 06/20/2010

2001 Honda Odyssey transmission failed on garden state parkway. The check engine light and tcs light came on followed by erratic shifting, then complete failure. Fortunately I was able to get to a safe place on the side of the highway since I had my family of 4 in the car under very heavy traffic. I then had to get towed to the dealership. The original transmission on this vehicle failed in February 2008 at approximately 80,000 miles. It was replaced under Honda's extended warranty on the transmission. So the new transmission replaced by Honda was 2 years old with 49,000 miles. American Honda offered no assistance in this instance and said there decision is based on the age and mileage of my vehicle not the age or mileage of the new defective transmission that they put in. There response on that was that it is irrelevant since I didn't pay for it. This is not acceptable sooner or later someone will get hurt. Failure came with no prior warning.

45 Transmission Failure problem

Failure Date: 06/05/2010

Transmission failure of 2001 Honda Odyssey.

46 Transmission Failure problem

Failure Date: 05/24/2010

The transmission failed today (may 24, 2010) on my 2001 Honda Odyssey for the second time at 97,000 miles. I was on the highway when it failed. It was a challenge but I was able to pull off the road into a gas station. Very dangerous experience. I contacted american Honda and they refused to replace the transmission (despite a 2nd failure). First failure occurred at 43,000 miles.

47 Transmission Failure problem

Failure Date: 05/21/2010

My 2001 Honda Odyssey failed to up shift while I am entering a highway, almost causing a crash with the big rig behind me. My mechanic told me the transmission failed at 95k miles and had to be rebuild. I also find many similar reports on the internet about Honda Odyssey's transmission failure. Seems like there is a quality issue regarding Honda Odyssey's transmission.

48 Transmission Failure problem

Failure Date: 03/15/2010

2001 Honda Odyssey purchased in 2003 from 1st owner -- did not receive any notice of class action suit regarding faulty transmission - now have 150k miles and transmission failing -- stops in traffic - dealership and USA Honda non-cooperative with regard to good will assistance or otherwise --.

49 Transmission Failure problem

Failure Date: 02/14/2010

Odyssey 2001 suffered transmission failure in 2005 under 7-years warranty and less than 100,000 miles and Honda dealer failed to replace transmission. Owner of vehicle was not notified for recall and ability to file complaints with NHTSA during recall process. On February 14, 2010 vehicle stopped on middle of highway and owner was forced to push vehicle on shoulder despite of disability condition to avoid collision. Car was towed to dealer who quoted for $5,000. 00 to replace transmission. It was discovered vehicle VIN #[xxx] is not in Honda manufacturer's database for recall because of inability of registered owner to file a complaint during recall process. This complaint is relevant to odi#10335008 that I believe recorded inaccurate. Information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. C. 552(b)(6).

50 Transmission Failure problem

Failure Date: 02/14/2010

Premature transmission failure.

51 Transmission Failure problem

Failure Date: 01/24/2010

Over the past two years we have noticed that the automatic transmission in our 2001 Honda Odyssey would shift abruptly. It was suggested that we have the old transmission fluid flushed out and replaced with new fluid and we had that work done by the Honda dealer from which we bought the car when it was new. About three months ago we were driving the car and the transmission ?locked? in high gear at about 60 mph on a divided highway. We could not get the transmission to downshift and the car would not slow down; it was a dangerous situation. We finally had to press on the brakes with a lot of force and the car finally slowed down, stopped and downshifted to a lower gear. This now occurs about once a week. We called the dealer and they told us that the transmission was failing and would most likely need to be replaced at our expense. A search of the internet revealed hundreds of cases of Odyssey owners having this same problem and having to have the transmission replaced even though the cars had low mileage. We also found that Honda had agreed to replace the transmissions at no charge as the result of a class action lawsuit. We took the car to the dealer to have the transmission checked. The diagnosis was that the transmission needed to be replaced at a cost to us of $3500. This malfunction creates a dangerous, potentially life-threatening situation for drivers of Honda Odysseys. Honda has admitted this is a design flaw in the car and yet they will not accept any responsibility to remedy the problem.

52 Transmission Failure problem

Failure Date: 01/13/2010

2001 Honda Odyssey transmission failure at about 100,000 miles of routine driving on a vehicle that was held to a better than average maintenance schedule. Honda issued a recall, but did not inform me of its existence, despite the fact that I regularly visited a certified Honda dealer for service, and now the vehicle is out of the recall's time/mileage parameters.

53 Transmission Failure problem

Failure Date: 11/25/2009

Was driving a 2001 Odyssey van on 11/24/2000 and at 8:00 pm on 321 north to blowing rock, north carolina and the transmission failed completely. We were barely able to get the van off the road and were fortunate it occurred where it did because part of that highway has no easy pull-off area. Original transmission had been replaced under extended warranty by Honda in late 2006. . . . . This transmission that failed was only about 3 years old, had about 60,000 miles on it, and was serviced according to Honda guidelines. Honda refused to take any responsibility. . . . . I believe the evidence is clear that Honda has had transmission defect issues with this vehicle and there is a major safety issue. We have filed an official complaint with better business and with american Honda. . . . Case number for Honda is no12009-11-3--1138.

54 Transmission Failure problem

Failure Date: 07/15/2009

The van at times seemed to be sluggish when changing gears. Also the engine check light came on and so I had it tested by auto zone and they indicated it was transmission failure. This occurred at about 85,000 miles. I had the readout checked again by a certified Honda mechanic and he said yes the transmission is failing. Early on I had been told about Honda Odyssey's and their transmission failures and so I changed the transmission fluid every 30,000 miles. I kept driving the van and at about 98,000 miles the engine light was coming on more often. This was in 2010 at the time the government program "cash for clunkers". So I thought I would cut my losses and get at least $4500 for the van which I did on a trade in for a civic. To my surprise the dealership put the van on the lot and sold it for about $6,500 maybe more. So now some poor buyer is going to have to put a replacement transmission which will cost 4,000 to 6,000. Just out of curiosity I looked at reports from 2001 through 2006 on mycarstats. Com and have discovered that Honda still hasn't corrected their transmission problems.

55 Transmission Failure problem

Failure Date: 06/18/2009

In June of 2009, the transmission failed, had it repaired at a Honda dealer - got a 3 year, 36k mile warranty. Transmission failed again in November 2012. Called Honda corporate and they said they will not do anything about it.

56 Transmission Failure problem

Failure Date: 06/12/2009

2001 Honda Odyssey lx with about 94000 miles was purchased used by current owners with about 22,000 miles. Transmission was replaced by Honda at 47191 (Apr 21, 2005) after much complaints by owner to dealers and regular mechanic. Owner was even told to flush engine at a cost of $70. 48. On June 11, 2009, Odyssey was checked out for road trip by regular mechanic (oil changed, filters replaced, brakes shoes replaced, and rear wheel cyls replaced) however transmission failed on road trip leaving 6 stranded in CA desert outside of barstow. Car was then towed to regular mechanic for review and repair. Over the years this car has received regular service from mechanic and transmission was serviced at 67851 miles by regular mechanic (not Honda dealer). Honda has denied claim for transmission replacement due to service by non Honda dealer and they are requesting proof that generic term "qt synthetic atf" which was used by mechanic (as noted on mechanics invoice for service dated 3/19/2007) was purchased from Honda dealership and was actually a Honda part. Mechanic has regular relationship with Honda dealer and suppliers and continues to use Honda parts for Honda cars (Toyota parts for Toyota cars, etc). During owner's discussion with Honda, they asked for additional clarification regarding atf Honda part. Owner spoke with mechanic regarding this. Mechanic went back to clarify original 3/19/2007 receipt and added phrase "Honda atf-z1" and reprinted receipt with "print date: 6/23/2009" showing "work completed date: 3/19/2007". Honda used this correction to deny all claim and said the mechanic altered the invoice. This vehicle requires it's third transmission before 94,000 miles. Owner feels this is unacceptable especially when Honda is aware of transmission problems during these years. Transmissions should last at least 100,000. Tires last 50,000 - 75,000 miles, why shouldn't a transmission.

57 Transmission Failure problem

Failure Date: 06/03/2009

Transmission warning light and engine light comes on at highway speed without warning. Dealer diagnosis indicates transmission internal failure require replacement.

58 Transmission Failure problem

Failure Date: 04/18/2009

Honda 2001 Odyssey Mini-van transmission failure - happened while driving the van would not move with the engine accelerating but no movement. Honda has a chronic transmission problem that has been litigated with a settlement in Dec 2006 to a class action lawsuit against Honda. Honda extended the transmission warranty by 9 months !! the fact is that Honda sold a defective product and it should be recalled - all the defective transmissions should be replace by Honda as part of the recall.

59 Transmission Failure problem

Failure Date: 11/26/2008

2001 Honda Odyssey transmission has failed a second time.

60 Transmission Failure problem

Failure Date: 10/15/2008

A whine in my 2001 Honda Odyssey transmission (4th) became louder and louder and after many trips to dealer with no success a Honda technician said it was not safe to drive any more. The first 3 transmission failures were detected with engine light turning on. My 5th transmission is experiencing the same problems. The whine is getting louder and many trips to Honda dealer are getting nowhere. I drive over 20000 miles per year and am concerned about potential accidents with defective equipment.

61 Transmission Failure problem

Failure Date: 10/14/2008

Transmission failed.

62 Transmission Failure problem

Failure Date: 10/08/2008

Original transmission failed at 76,000 miles in October 2008. Honda replaced transmission but only provided 12 month, 12,000 mile warranty. The replaced transmission failed after only 28,000 miles and 33 months. At 104,000 miles, began noticing shifting problems on or about July 8, 2011. Brought Odyssey to Honda dealership in white plians NY for evaluation. Honda dealership advised the transmission needed to be replaced again and it was not a covered repair. Clearly transmission should have a life span of more than 28,000 miles. Letter sent to Honda requesting replacement. Honda motors refused to cover replacement of transmission.

63 Transmission Failure problem

Failure Date: 07/22/2008

1st transmission failure of my 2001 Odyssey came at 73,900 miles. Got warranted new transmission. At 84,000 miles 3rd gear pressure related to transmission had to be fixed. Not warranted. At 107,443 internal failure of transmission. Full replacement required. Service manager said that second transmission was out of warranty but agreed to charge me 50% of the $4800. 00 dollar cost so I ended up having to pay $2410. 35. Imagine, there have been numerous Odyssey transmission failures especially from my research, for the years 1999-2002. Many Honda Odyssey owners, including myself had to replace multiple Odyssey transmissions. Imagine I have only gone 107,443 miles and I'm on my third transmission. Honda has to know there was a design flaw etc. , in those transmissions, but didn't recall them as they should have. I think there should be a recall of the Odyssey transmissions for the years 1999-2002. I shouldn't even have had to pay half the cost of my third latest Odyssey transmission. Honda has gotten away with murder. At least Toyota recalled the many cars that seem to be defective. Honda should be doing the same thing for its Odyssey customers.

64 Transmission Failure problem

Failure Date: 07/21/2008

Experienced initial transmission failure as erratic shifting, slipping, whining, and flashing "d" light. Transmission was replaced by Honda. Currently, at 118,000 miles, the remanufactured transmission is failing. This is 42, 000 miles and 4 years after it was replaced. Honda says that there is nothing they can do to help with another replacement. After speaking to a few transmission techs, they have told me that there is a design flaw in the placement and material of the transmission filter which causes the failures.

65 Transmission Failure problem

Failure Date: 07/11/2008

Transmission failure on 2001 Honda Odyssey's. Honda will conduct repairs if failure occurs within 7 yrs or 109k miles. My van just started having problems at 120k miles. After reviewing several internet sites this transmission failure is a very common issue, and while we are just now at the 7 yr (2008) limit, most people are outside the 109k window. Is there any hope/help that the NHTSA can offer to influence Honda to perform a full or at least shared repair?.

66 Transmission Failure problem

Failure Date: 06/15/2008

2001 Honda Odyssey minivans problem: defective transmissions transmissions typically self-destruct between 75,000 and 130,000 miles. Honda lost a class action lawsuit relating to this issue. When this problem occurs, the transmission shifts harshly and sounds horrible. "d4" indicator light blinks as well as the check engine light comes on. The class action lawsuit resulted in Honda extending the drivetrain warranty to 100,000 miles. Unfortunately, most transmissions breakdown shortly after that mileage and Honda typically does not help out after that period. After "googling" Honda Odyssey transmission problems, I was shocked to find out that there are thousands of customers suffering from the same problems that I have, and Honda will not help out. In fact, their customer service representatives are noted as being trained to "act like robots and belittle the customer" when it comes to offering assistance. I feel that Honda should replace these defective transmissions for no cost to the customer. I believe transmissions should last well over 100,000 miles. My transmission has completely failed at 119,000 miles. I did have it at the local dealer complaining of transmission problems at around 94,000 miles, but they said nothing was wrong and suggested I have the transmission fluid changed. I went along with their suggestion and had it changed. This corrected the problem for a short time; unfortunately the problems returned and then the transmission eventually failed. Upon reviewing forums on the internet relating to Honda transmission problems, I believe Honda is "blowing off" Odyssey owners with this problem. There is a major safety concern. The autos can breakdown during travel risking an accident. It can leave drivers and passengers stranded. Honda needs to offer complete replacements of these transmissions without cost to customers. They produced a "bad batch" of transmission over a period of years beginning in year 2000. Please investigate. Thank you.

67 Transmission Failure problem

Failure Date: 02/17/2008

The transmission failed on two separate occasions. The Honda dealer replaced the transmission on both occasions. Due to the mileage (111,700) I had to pay half the cost for the second transmission installation.

68 Transmission Failure problem

Failure Date: 03/21/2007

Transmission has failed 3 times while vehicle was in use. Failures occured at 83,000 miles (2007), 117,000 miles (2010) and 135,000 miles (2011). Accidents were avoided in all three cases, but could easily have occurred as car was in highway use surrounded by other cars/ trucks when transmission locked up. Honda has not reimbursed any of these failures and in the first instance told vehicle owner that car was outside of warranty period, even though (we recently discovered) there had been an extension on the transmission warranty period to 109,000 miles and car was only at 83,000 miles at that time. Transmission is currently only 7,000 miles from last transmission replacement and is exhibiting gear changing problems currently. Vehicle owner is reluctant to sell vehicle along to another owner, knowing of the potential safety issue should the transmission fail for a fourth time. Honda should recall these 2001 vehicles, as they did for 2002-2004 models. There is no rationale for having excluded the 2001 year. They are not safe to drive.

69 Transmission Failure problem

Failure Date: 02/10/2007

The contact owns a 2001 Honda Odyssey. The contact stated that the transmission has failed three times. He is currently attempting to get Honda to replace it for the fourth time. The manufacturer stated that they will pay 50% of the repair cost; however, the contact does not want to pay for the other half. The failure mileage was 84,454.

70 Transmission Failure problem

Failure Date: 08/13/2006

Honda 2001 transmission failure. The is number 2. First one was replaced at 42,000 at no charge in July 2006. Now at 79,000 the second one is failing and Honda wants $5000 for a replacement. Help.
