1 Hatchback/liftgate Support Device problem

Failure Date: 06/30/2014

When I was on vacation with my family, the driver side passenger door would not close. It would close partly, begin beeping and reopen. We had to keep pressing the control to close the door until it finally closed. Two days before that, the liftgate struts failed. That is disturbing when I think about how my daughter was helping me get items out of the back. We could have been seriously injured. Thirdly, the paint is stripping off on parts of the body. Considering the reputation that Honda is supposed to have, it is upsetting to have this many problems with an 8 year old vehicle! now we must decide if it's worth fixing and keeping or trade it in for a Toyota. In looking at the other complaints, it is obvious that there are problems with the vehicle that needs to be addressed but are not being addressed. How seriously does someone have to be hurt before someone pays attention?.

2 Hatchback/liftgate Support Device problem

Failure Date: 10/08/2013

Rear door liftgate failed, rear door would not stay open and slammed down on my head/torso while trying to remove items from the back.

3 Hatchback/liftgate Support Device problem

Failure Date: 11/29/2011

The struts on the liftgate of my 2006 Honda Odyssey lx completely failed in November 2011 at around 40,000 miles. Thankfully, this happened as I was opening it, so no one was underneath it yet. The liftgate is extremely heavy and could have caused serious injury, especially to a small person. We replaced the struts with new Honda parts purchased from the same Honda dealership where we purchased the vehicle. It is now April 2013, not even a year and half later, and the replacement struts have also failed. I called the dealership, and they have no advice on what to do from here other than replace the struts with the same part that has failed twice now. I've seen numerous reports online about the same issue with the same vehicle. Given the track record of the liftgate struts for this model, I think it's pretty likely this will happen again, and I fear that I or someone in my family may suffer serious injury or worse. Other model years have been recalled because apparently the pressurized gas leaks from the struts. I think the 2006 has the same problem, and a recall is in order. These struts need to be replaced with ones that don't leak. This is a serious safety issue.

4 Hatchback/liftgate Support Device problem

Failure Date: 05/10/2011

I have replaced the both the right and left liftgate struts on our 2006 Honda Odyssey. Now the right replacement strut has failed. That's three failures in under two years. Surely there is a problem here judging from all of the similar complaints. This problem needs to be addressed before someone or someone's child gets seriously injured!.

5 Hatchback/liftgate Support Device problem

Failure Date: 01/01/2011

The contact owns a 2006 Honda Odyssey. The contact stated that the rear hatch strut that held the liftgate failed and as a result, would not remain in an upright position. The contact stated that the liftgate struck and injured a passenger in their back. The dealer was notified who informed the contact that there were no recalls and offered no further assistance. The contact did not inform the manufacturer of the failure nor was the vehicle repaired. The current mileage was 60,000 and the failure mileage was 59,500.

6 Hatchback/liftgate Support Device problem

Failure Date: 01/01/2011

My 2006 Honda Odyssey (with 45000 miles) rear liftgate supporting strut(s) failed and the the gate became so heavy. Luckily the failure happened when the gate was closed. If the failure occurs when the gate is open, someone may be injured. However, I did bump my head when I put a post to hold the gate while removing items from the vehicle. I accidentally hit the post and the gate fell and hit my head. The key point is that Honda should replace the struts with a heavier duty parts so no one will get hurt.

7 Hatchback/liftgate Support Device problem

Failure Date: 06/25/2010

The contact owns a 2006 Honda Odyssey touring. The contact stated the tail gate was open when the tailgate began beeping and slammed shut without warrant. The contact was under the tail gate at the time of the failure but was able to avoid it from falling on top of his head. The contact found that the tailgate strut had failed. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was contacted who advised there were no recalls and would not provide any assistance. The failure and current mileage was 81,300.

8 Hatchback/liftgate Support Device problem

Failure Date: 03/30/2010

Power liftgate closes unexpectedly every time it is opened on model year 2006 Odyssey touring vehicles equipped with power operated rear liftgate. Vehicle owner hit in head by closing liftgate. Right power liftgate gas strut has worn out prematurely and fails to hold the power liftgate in the fully open position. Parts replaced by dealer to correct the failure.

9 Hatchback/liftgate Support Device problem

Failure Date: 03/25/2010

Please review your 10v-055000 concerning 2005 Honda Odyssey touring's rear lift gate support cylinders. My vehicle is a 2006 with the same problem. The problem occurred before the expiration of the 36 month/36000 mile warranty. Unfortunately, my wife did not tell me of the problem until a week after the 36 month warranty expired. Honda shows the part number for this lift cylinder as 74820-shj-a61. This part number was used on 2005-2008 vehicles. The local Honda dealer at first was unwilling to do anything. After I insisted he call Honda, he informed me that there was a recall in progress. However, since my vehicle was not currently a part of the affected vehicles, the best Honda would do was pay for the replacement parts if I paid the dealership for the labor. Sounds to me like Honda knows they have a bigger problem, but are unwilling to expand the recall. Instead, they are trying to fix the larger problem on the cheap. And then, only if they are called to task about it. It is clear to me, that as time goes on, the 2006, 2007, and 2008 vehicles will experience the same problems. Please get this recall expanded to include the 2006-2008 vehicles, as well as the 2005 vehicles. It is the same part number for all vehicles, 2005-2008.
