Radiator problems of the 2006 Honda Odyssey

Blown engine. No events leading up to the failure except for immediately before, when we noticed the engine over heating. Checked it a while later, and all the engine oil was in the radiator! will need a new engine and radiator.

2006 Honda Odyssey bought used w/ approx 61,000 miles and 60,000 mile extended warranty, purchased last week of July 2010, breakdown 10/6/2010. Had shake while driving and was serviced, found to have problem with transmission, transmission fluid changed and problem resolved. Car was driven part way across country, 1200 miles, in the next 10 days, all highway miles. 20 minutes after stopping for lunch, while cruising on highway @ 70 mph, car had intermittent clicking noise coming from driver's side engine compartment. No warning lights were on @ this time and temp reading was normal. My husband took car off cruise control, noise stopped, he attempted to pass another vehicle, car lost all acceleration, check engine light blinked a couple times, he slowed, started safely moving to shoulder, clicking started, check engine light came on solid, temp gauge spiked to red, caron shoulder, no power. From first clicking noise to engine failure and first warning light was approx 1 minute. Dealer found car to have cracked engine, melted radiator, blown head gasket, no coolant or oil in engine. No original source for breakdown could be found even after complete engine teardown. Head gasket was not cause of breakdown. No oil leak, had oil change @ dealer prior to our purchase of vehicle, not yet due for routine service, oil life indicator gave 50% oil life 20 miles prior to breakdown. Honda notified and not concerned. Warranty CO denied claim b/c no cause of failure found. Dealership that sold car is paying for new engine, radiator and any other repairs and will continue to seek reimbursement from warranty CO. Search of Honda forums (edmunds. Com) found many problems w/ oil consumption on 2005-2010 Honda Odysseys.

I have a 2006 Honda Odyssey ex-l with fewer than 15k miles on it. I t took it to the deal because antifreeze was leaking out of it. The dealer informed me that the antifreeze was leaking out of my radiator. The dealer attributed this to a stone hitting the radiator and causing the leak. This seems to be a design flaw in the 2006 Odyssey. This could have been a lot worse as I was able to safely pull off of the road. Had this happened at highway speed, the engine could have seize due to lack of coolant and I could have lost control of the vehicle causing a serious wreck and possible injury to me, my passengers or others. I recommend that the NHTSA take action on behalf of all consumers who own this vehicle to force a recall from Honda to fix this issue.

I own a 2006 Honda Odyssey ex-l. On Wednesday June 20, 2007 I noticed that my air conditioner was no longer putting out cold air. I also noticed at this time that my temp gauge was over to the hot line. I immediately shut off my engine and let it cool. Once I restarted it immediately went back to the hot position. Once I made it home I shut off the engine and noticed that the fan continued to run and the car was emitting a burning rubbery smell. I called the Honda dealership and told them about this. I asked about this being covered under warranty and the technician stated that if for some reason there was a rock in there that my warranty would not cover it but I had no concern because I thought this was rare. It was towed to the Honda dealership and they called me the next morning stating that there were rocks in my radiator and that my warranty would not cover it and it was going to cost me over $700 to get it fixed. I did some research and talked with Honda again and they said that they see this alot. They showed me my radiator and three rocks that they pulled out of it saying that these are what caused my problem. They asked if they could fix the radiator while they had the parts in stock and I said yes knowing that I need my car ASAP. I later called the dealership again to question the incident with the rocks because I talked with another mechanic and he said that this should not happened that easily. They still have the old radiator. The level of courtesy and customer service that I have received from Honda has dramatically dropped since I have been investigating this issue. This morning, Sunday July 1, 2007 I decided to do some internet research on Honda Odyssey's and this rock problem and I was amazed and appalled at how much this happens and how much Honda has just ignored this design flaw. I feel that a design flaw allowing your engine to overheat can put you at risk for a major engine fire and possibly death and Honda has chosen to ignore this.

A/c problem 6 months after purchase. We purchased a new 2006 Honda Odyssey in June 2006, and in December we started having a/c problems. It was diagnosed as having a hole in the a/c condensor which the Honda dealer stated to be caused by a rock. The van had less than 11,000 miles on it, and we purchased an extended warranty when we bought the van. Surely, the original warranty or the extended warranty should cover such a problem, but Honda said no. Being only 6 months old, we find it very frustrating to have to pay for something like this when it appears to be a design flaw by Honda. The a/c condensor is just sitting there exposed to all the elements of the road with no grill in front of it. The american Honda rep agreed to pay half as a "good will gesture". It still cost us $275 for the repair. Lots of others are having the same issue with Honda odesseys as seen on the internet. Honda should be forced to recall these vehicles and install a screen in front of the condensor to protect it, and should be forced to reimburse everyone any money spent to correct this problem.
