1 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 11/23/2021

My 2010 Honda Odyssey is accelerating while breaking. Both times I am trying to slow down and stop at red traffic light, and both times, it initially slowed down but accelerated all of sudden. I had to shift to p before it finally stopped.

2 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 09/11/2018

When having to slow down or stop quickly, the van starts to jerk back and forth and shake a lot and the car becomes very difficult to control. This is especially noticeable when going down hills such as I-70 in colorado, I-15 in eastern California or mountain passes in the sierra nevadas, but also when coming around a corner on a freeway and the traffic is stopped. It would be very serious if driving and a child ran out into the street in front of the van. I recently learned that this has happened fairly frequently with Honda Odyssey vans. I have had to replace brake and strut parts and bearings multiple times. (gratefully the struts were still under warranty, so I only had to pay for labor the ensuing times. ).

3 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 05/28/2018

Vehicle was in motion on a local street, a car stopped short in front of me, I hit the car with my front left end, the driver air bag deployed, popped and the front passenger airbag deployed. I sustained burn injuries to my left forearm with permanent scarring.

4 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 03/16/2017

This vehicle speed from 50 to 70 miles if take brake the car vibrate, that start from around 30,000 miles. After fixed it, about 5,000 miles, vibrate again. Now the total mileage is 79,300, already fixed 3 times. I found Honda all car model has the same issue (all my friends' different Honda car models) . Another problem is when drive feeling a strong vibration in steering wheel when acceleration feeling from this April 2017. Last week just fixed it, dealer changed both side of driveshaft assy-. Car dealer talked to me manufacture used the bad parts may from 2008 to 2012.

5 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 03/28/2016

There were no injuries sustained. There was no police report filed. The vehicle was totaled. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 58,000.

6 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 03/20/2016

Traveling in motion at 40mph than a sudden acceleration of engine and speed. Very difficult to stop with brakes. Honda Odyssey was put on neutral than brakes were applied to stop vehicle. My vehicle was on a secondary rode at the time of sudden acceleration. We called aaa to pick up our Honda Odyssey and took it to our local mechanic for the rest of the day.

7 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 08/21/2015

Self acceleration on highway: driving on highway (new york state thruway) I realized car (2010 Odyssey ex) was starting to speed up on its own, even with brake (foot completely off gas pedal) it was very difficult to slow down to below 55 mph: when I braked harder car shook heavily as if brake was fighting engine. Finally (within 1-2 miles) I came to a safe area to stop (a small rest-"text" stop) stopped on brake hard and pulled hand brake, and turned off engine - smoke came out of brakes . Front disk brakes were glowing orange. After brakes cooled down restarted car drove about 2 miles at 40mph - on highway to exit and checked into hotel.

8 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 03/26/2015

Unexpected sudden acceleration while parking.

9 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 11/20/2014

After front brakes were replaced pedal height felt decent. When stopping on a rainy day I felt the abs kick in. It made a different sound than I've heard before. Ever since then the pedal height has not felt normal. Feels soft. If you pump it a couple times its not too bad but who has time for that in a sudden stop. The pedal feels as though it travels farther before engaging and when it does, it is still not hard like my Ford. For a vehicle like this with 4 wheel disc brakes it should stop on a dime like it used to. Had the brake fluid changed at the dealer. No difference. They could not give me a spec for the pedal height. Interesting. I guess the pedal can never be too low if there's no spec, only subjective to what Honda wants to admit is bad or not. Interestingly enough I have a 1989 Lincoln mark vii with the orginal Ford service manual. There is a specific range for the pedal height when measured from the floor board. Surprising how Ford has had it since 1989 and Honda is not required. Again - we can all think the pedal is too low but it's ultimately Honda's opinion since there's nothing to measure it against. I have owned this vehicle since it was brand new so I know how the brakes used to, and should feel. Given the number of complaints on the web with similar stories from the dealers and Honda I hope NHTSA will finally force this issue into a recall by reassessing the vehicles stopping distance against what was advertised. Or is this only applicable for the 3/36 warranty? NHTSA, in the wake of the vw scandal, please finally force Honda to pull their head of the sand, admit and correct these issues so many customers are complaining about. Especially as it pertains to something as critical as brakes.

14 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 04/12/2014

I was pulling into a parking spot. I was approximately 3-4 feet from the curb in front of me. My foot was on the brake and I was slowing to a stop when the van suddenly accelerated extremely rapidly (and was not responsive to brake application ) and slammed into the curb in front of me, causing minor damage to the front end. I verified that the floor mats were not near the accelerator.

17 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 08/08/2012

When braking at 60 mph or higher, the front end of the vehicle shimmies. The steering wheel shakes violently in my hands. Once the speed is below 60 mph, the shimmy stops. I took it to mcgrath Honda in chicago and after an inspection I was told the front brakes were new and that the rear brakes needed replacment. They said their mechanic thought the shake was being caused by the rear brakes!! I agreed to let them repair the rear brakes. The problem still exists. I may have purchased rear brakes needlessly! I have lookedm on the internet and found several complaints that are like mine. I have also read that some ownerss had the rotors replaced and they still have the problem. I am wondering as to the number of similar complaints that will cause the NHTSA to investigate this problem.

18 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 08/07/2012

Tl-the contact owns a 2010 Honda Odyssey. The contact stated that while approaching to a complete stop, there was a delayed response when the brake pedal was depressed. The contact also mentioned that there was a delayed response when braking. The vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer eight times where the front brakes and rotors were replaced, however the failure persisted after the repair. The manufacturer was notified of the defect. The approximate failure mileage was 39,000.

20 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 03/24/2012

At low speeds from 20-35 miles per hour, the vehicle abs causes braking to fail to halt the vehicle in the anticipated distance of other cars. It takes 3. 5 car lengths at 18-20 mph, which can lead to rear end collision with the vehicle in front of you. You are forced to keep double the normal number of car lengths behind the vehicle in front of you. And your front wheels start sort of 'hopping' causing partial loss of traction, during the abs cycle that probably shouldn't be engaging. I had the same experience with my prior 2007 Honda accord hybrid, only worsened by the various hybrid components kicking in and out, including the regen braking, and the engine cutoff, as well as the abs and the transmission downshifting. I had two minor rear end front end accidents but frequently found myself skidding into intersections. Both vehicles also suffered from difficulty regulating speed without using the brakes, and very sensitive speed braking. Nonetheless, I think the abs, suspension and the braking are combining to cause the vehicle to partly lose traction and leads to extended braking distances at low speed. I have not only repeatedly written and called Honda about this particular problem, I've even threatened to terminate my lease agreement over it. Honda's only response to my calls and letters since 2008 is that 'there is no outstanding recall regarding the condition you are reporting', to which my comment: "there darn well should be!" falls on very deaf corporate ears.

21 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 07/28/2011

2010 Honda Odyssey touring with 12,500 miles. The brakes grind frequently and at 5-7 mph the van rolls to a stop. This seems abnormal, the dealer says functioning properly.

2010 Honda Odyssey. Consumer states problem with gps unit and oil leaking inside van under dash according to the invoice, oil was leaking from the brake pedal assembly, which was excess oil. Also, the gps was giving inaccurate information and would remain in one position.

24 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 06/01/2011

We bought a new 2010 Honda odyssy from the Honda dealer last year and started to notice that the brake makes grinding sound occasionally when I step on it. And the passenger side can feel the shaking when the brake is engaged. I tool to the dealer last month. They told me the break is fine. It is probably the abs system causing the grinding and shaking. There is no need to fix. But the problem persisits and we need to get it fixed before an accident happens.

25 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 01/21/2011

Numerous occasions of van front-end shudder that impacts the ability to maintain control of the vehicle. Taken to Honda dealer, under warranty and the dealer states it was warped rotors but the vehicle only had 20,000 miles on it (2010 model) and considered it a maintenance item and would not cover it under warranty. Repair was not made.

26 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 12/31/2010

The contact owns a 2010 Honda odyessy. The contact was driving between 40 and 65 mph when the steering wheel started to shake. The vehicle was taken to the dealer three times. The failure mileage was 18,849 and the current mileage was 50,000.

27 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 11/01/2010

The contact owns a 2010 Honda Odyssey. While driving 45 mph approaching a stop sign she engaged the brakes and the pedal was soft. She had to engaged the brakes harder in order for the vehicle to stop. She stated that the failure occurred several times in one week. The vehicle was taken to the dealer. The dealer had to bleed her brakes. The failure mileage was 8,500 and the current mileage was 9,300.

28 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 10/25/2010

I too have had unintended acceleration problems w/ both my new 2010 Honda Odyssey (currently 1600 mi) and my 2005 Honda Odyssey (130000 mi when traded-in). In all cases I had engine acceleration as I tried to apply the brakes. Very scary the first time or two. I finally discovered that my foot was overhanging the brake pedal on the right (which it can easily do when braking with my right foot) and was inadvertently contacting the gas pedal. The harder I tried to brake the faster the engine accelerated. I have learned to let up on the brake & move my foot to the left. Immediate problem was solved but I believe this a design fault. More distance between the brake & gas pedals would eliminate this problem. Perhaps a redesign of the brake pedal face would be a cost effective remedy.

29 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 10/01/2010

The contact owns a 2010 Honda Odyssey. The contact stated that while driving at various speeds, he applied the brakes and noticed that the pedal was very soft and slow to respond. The contact also haphazardly depressed the accelerator pedal simultaneously. The failure recurred numerous times. The vehicle was taken to a dealer several times over the course of three years and the contact was informed that the brakes were operating as designed each time. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 15 and the current mileage was 10,000.

30 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 02/25/2010

I was driving between 30 and 40 mph on the highway in moderate traffic when traffic suddenly stopped at an off-ramp. I pushed my brake pedal all the way to the floor before feeling the brakes engage at all. It appeared that I had enough distance to stop, but my car continued to slide into the vehicle in front of me, and we were surprised to have the air bags deploying in our faces as we hit the other car. That car then hit the car in front of it. All 3 cars were undrivable. The other two drivers were transported to the hospital by ambulance, while my daughter and I had pain for 1-2 weeks following. I drove another car while my car was in the shop, and was shocked at the difference in the braking. Driving the Honda every day, I did not notice the changes in brake functioning over time. I literally had to push the pedal all the way to the floor to get the brakes to work. I just had the brake recall performed, and notice a drastic difference in stopping distance and in how little I have to push on the pedal now to get the brakes to engage. I was told by Honda that the soft brakes would have had nothing to do with my accident because it doesn't have to do with actual brake functioning.

31 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 11/24/2009

We have a 2010 Honda Odyssey. I was looking ahead in traffic and notice the car in front of me had slam their brakes. I thought I had enough distances to stop, but my brakes locked up and I couldn't maneuver the steering wheel. I felt like I kept sliding instead of just stopping. The road conditions were dry and at dusk time during the day. The lady from the car that I barely hit, got out of her car and asked me how new was my vehicle. I told her that we had just got it. She said when I looked back to see you, you had enough room to stop but it looked like you kept sliding. She thought I should go and get my brakes checked. So I did at the same Honda dealership and they said my brakes were find. I don't think that my brakes are fine. I had a 2004 Odyssey and I felt safer with those brakes than I do with this brand new vehicle. One other thing about my vehicle since I am on here. We had taken a long trip just after we had bought the vehicle. A warning light came own. My husband looked in the manual it was in relation to emissions. It was the malfunction indicator lamp. We had called the dealership and they told us 2 things. Take it in to get it looked at the nearest Honda dealership and are we tightening our gas tank cap. So we took it to a dealership. They told us nothing was wrong. During our whole trip back we made sure our gas tank cap was tighten. To this vary day they say nothing is wrong, but the light comes and goes. They can't tell us what is wrong with it that there is nothing wrong. So I am on here concern about my family and I safety.
