2 Transmission Failure problem of the 2004 Honda Odyssey

Failure Date: 10/27/2020

Transmission failure occured when driving in rt 5 freeway past glendale and 134 junction, car was running in about 60 miles speed and came abrupt stop (loss of drive/pull in a very dangerous way). Managed to push it to breakdown lane. Then upon turning off the engine and after a while I could drive a bit to park in internal road. I then towed the car. Later, I drove in internal road. Same problem occurs. When placed in automatic drive (d) vehicle runs for few miles and suddenly fails to run and stops. Changing gear doesn't help. When ignition is turned off and on back again, it works again for a mile or two and shows same problem. When problem occurs, it doesn't move in any gears. Researching in internet, Honda 2004 Odyssey transmission failure occurring at 117,000 miles was reported all over the internet. As if it was programmed by Honda, this Mini van too failed at 117k miles. Some owners have claimed (including youtube videos) that Honda is aware of this problem and have taken care of the repair at no cost. Some also claim that Honda has secret warranty to cover this problem and had availed the repair free of cost . This is a know problem to Honda. Honda must repair for free and do the justice to consumers. This is indeed fatal too.

With no power available, the driver was ultimately forced to coast to a stop on the shoulder of the road. Warning messages indicated a transmission failure, emission control failure, and blind spot monitoring failure. The car was towed to the nearest Honda dealer.

6 Transmission Failure problem of the 2017 Honda Odyssey

Failure Date: 01/22/2019

The vehicle was in motion on a street and normally decelerating from 30 mph towards a stop light. Without warning the car suddenly decelerated and stalled the engine. It was as if the transmission shifted into park. This happened three other times and eventually, the car would not shift into reverse despite indicating that it was in reverse. Only on the 5th trip the car had a warning error light appear. The car had to be towed to the dealership and they found a catastrophic transmission failure. The car was about 1 year old and had less than 11k miles on.

18 Transmission Failure problem of the 2003 Honda Odyssey

Failure Date: 05/20/2015

Transmission failed at 150k miles. Honda is aware that the transmissions of the older Odysseys are not lasting long.

19 Transmission Failure problem of the 2004 Honda Odyssey

Failure Date: 04/25/2015

I purchased this vehicle from a Honda dealership used 4 years ago with 104k miles on it for $10k. I'd had it inspected by the dealership and it received a clean bill of health. I've driven this car for an additional 40k miles and had the transmission fail with my 3 toddler boys in the car on the way back from a soccer game (quite frightening). I'm now being told that it will cost $5k to repair! and now that I'm looking further into this car, it's clear that there's ongoing transmission issues that Honda has not addressed. Shame on Honda.

20 Transmission Failure problem of the 1999 Honda Odyssey

Failure Date: 04/15/2015

I was driving on a crowded expressway when my car seized up completely due to a transmission failure which put me in an extremely dangerous situation. I was in the middle lane with three large semi trailer trucks in front of me, in back of me, and to the right of me on a 3 lane highway. The truck behind me had enough room to barely slow down but it almost crashed into me. I turned on my emergency flasher lights and was able to get the car onto the shoulder of a slightly uphill exit ramp, narrowly escaping serious injury. I was then able to very slowly move the car in first gear with the flashers going, and fortunately was close to a side street where I parked the car and had it towed to the nearest dealership. Although Honda replaced my transmission for free under the auspices of a class action lawsuit back in 2007, the car has low mileage for the life of the transmission. However, they are refusing to cover the replacement cost of the transmission. The transmission failure was sudden and literally seized up the car and put my life in danger. This doesn't seem to matter to Honda. I am registering this complaint not only to get satisfaction from Honda, but also to warn other Odyssey owners that this may happen to them, and let them know this is potentially deadly.

21 Transmission Failure problem of the 2005 Honda Odyssey

Failure Date: 04/11/2015

The contact owns a 2005 Honda Odyssey. While driving approximately 30 mph, the brake pedal was depressed but the vehicle did not stop. The contact had to turn the ignition to the off position in order to stop the vehicle. The vehicle was taken to a dealer where it was diagnosed that the brakes and transmission failed. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure and the VIN was not included in NHTSA campaign number: 10v504000 (service brakes, hydraulic). The approximate failure mileage was 135,000.

22 Transmission Failure problem of the 2003 Honda Odyssey

Failure Date: 04/09/2015

Traveling on an interstate highway, transmission failed. Fluid exited transmission and "smoke" appeared at rear of vehicle. Dealership diagnosed transmission failure and estimated repair costs at $2500-3500. Since we were 1000 miles from home and did not want to put that much into repairs, we bought a new car from the dealership. Later found out this transmission frequently fails under these circumstances due to lack of fluid circulation. Fluid is "blown" out of transmission and to rear of car. It may be due to a defect in design.

23 Transmission Failure problem of the 2004 Honda Odyssey

Failure Date: 04/03/2015

Transmission failed at 94k miles.

24 Transmission Failure problem of the 2001 Honda Odyssey

Failure Date: 03/15/2015

Without warning no dash lights nor check engine lights my transmission failed in heavy traffic. . A slight up rev and then complete failure of transmission. . . . Just avoided being rearended as the car slowed quickly on a rise and just made it to the shoulder in traffic. . Fluid levels were normal but fluid had a odor . . . My mechanic towed the car and drained and filled the trans (not convertor) to verify condition. . Trans will move in reverse at high rpm. This transmission was replaced 6/6/05 at 37400 miles under warranty and has been serviced and topped off as needed until now. . In heavy traffic serious injury or death could have occured if not for observant driver behind me. . I understand from transmission shops and rebuilders that Honda transmission are built to fail with very poor design (no filtering of fluids,,and very weak clutch assemblies) to repair this vehicle it will cost $3800. 00-to $5000. 00 for new transmission and $3000. 00 for a reliable rebuilt (jasper) this car was purchased to replace my 2004 freestar with transmission failures three times within 75. 000 miles.

25 Transmission Failure problem of the 2003 Honda Odyssey

Failure Date: 01/28/2015

Car was running on city road and suddenly stopped running and check engine light came up immediately. It was good that I was not busy and not running fast or not in the freeway, and there is no car behind my car. I stop engine; after sometime I started and it was running again and after 20 minutes it stopped on the road again. I drove to a nearby Honda service center for checking and they gave me documents that said a transmission replacement needed that cost more than 6,000. I drove back in my parking lot and park there and did not drive on the road again. I tried in the parking lot and found it runs when the car is cold, but when it heated it stop, but after sometimes it run again. I do not feel safe and do not drive this car on the road. Some of my friends also brought the same car and they faced the same problem after 100,000-180,000. If a car transmission failed like this and if it happen on the freeway with 70 speed it can make serious accident. Honda CO. Must recall this model and fix this problem.

26 Transmission Failure problem of the 2004 Honda Odyssey

Failure Date: 01/01/2015

Was driving normal then car stalled and started reving very loud and jerking when pushing on gas while the d for drive was lashing even when put ino park the d still flashed blue was reading about problem and it sounds like transmission failure.

27 Transmission Failure problem of the 2001 Honda Odyssey

Failure Date: 12/01/2014

2001 Honda Odyssey, purchased with 83,610 miles from Subaru of exeter. June 23, 2008, 104,527 miles. It was my understanding that warranty covered up to 109,000 miles. The transmission was replaced under recall warranty at dover auto world, Honda service, due to check engine and tcs lights being on. Transmission came with a 3yr/36,000 warranty. December 1, 2014, 184,148 miles (80k on 2nd transmission), difficult to shift into reverse and drive sometimes engine slips before finally engaging into gear, over the next week, check engine light, tcs and d4 light flashing light on. Transmission fault code p0780, diagnosed, drove van two more days when transmission failed. Towed to local in town mechanic, given estimate for a re-manufactured transmission + labor $4,500. Spoke with Honda motors of America, on Dec 18th 2014 provided with all requested information, the response provided by Honda is that the van had exceeded warranty and I would need to take the liability and pay for it. Honda customer service where surprised that it was replaced in 2008 under warranty. Honda claimed the mileage limit was 100,000. Bottom line is no help, spoke with local Honda dealership. . . They could not help. Since Honda of America had denied me. I agree that I should cover a portion of the cost (labor) but Honda should cover for materials since its their product and they should stand behind it.

28 Transmission Failure problem of the 2003 Honda Odyssey

Failure Date: 11/17/2014

Like many other complaints about the 2003 Odyssey, we have experienced a transmission failure. Like others, our van has had the original recall notice work performed (Honda recall number 'p30' in early 2004, after the announcement), and yet at a relatively low 125,000 miles the transmission went out in Nov '14, as confirmed by a local Honda dealer. Honda stated that, since the previous work has been done under recall, they are not liable for any more work to be performed. My complaint is this: if so many other '02-'04 Odyssey owners are having the same problem, it is obvious that Honda did not properly correct their earlier mistake, and they should pony up to fix the transmissions, or reimburse owners who already had the work performed. My request: NHTSA place pressure on american Honda to do the right thing, and own up monetarily or service-wise to myself and the thousands of other owners who have had/are having/will have these issues.

29 Transmission Failure problem of the 2004 Honda Odyssey

Failure Date: 11/14/2014

Driving on highway on 11/15/2014 way to work around 65 mph and suddenly felt a jerk as some one hit from behind, looked around and keep driving felt jerk again and speed of vehicle came down pulled car to the side. Stopped the engine f0r few minutes and started the car again put gear in drive and car is moving very slowly even giving enough gas. End of calling tow truck and towed car to close by dealer. Dealer called me today 11/15/2014 to inform there is a transmission failure and need around $6000 in repairs.

30 Transmission Failure problem of the 2002 Honda Odyssey

Failure Date: 11/07/2014

I am the original owner of a 2002 Honda Odyssey van. On 11/07/2014, van failed to accelerate and the malfunction indicator was on. I had van towed to the local Honda dealership. The service dept at the dealership said the ecl code was p0730. They said transmission needs to be replaced. The approximate failure mileage on van was 62000. I had to pay around $3500 for having the dealer rebuilt the transmission. I had the service advisor take photos of the damaged transmission. The service advisor told me that the 3rd gear has heat discoloration & is burned up. In addition he said, clutches were burnt up. I have the photos of the 3rd gear discoloration & also have the damaged parts that were replaced by the dealership. Since my van has low mileage, I contacted Honda but they refused any help saying warranty period on van had expired. I also contacted Honda's recall dept, since I felt that the burnt 3rd gear was related to transmission overheating per 2004 Honda recall related to 2001 to 2004 vans. Honda said that recall was for 2nd gear & my discoloration was on 3rd gear. This was like splitting hairs; since internal damage to transmission was due to the root cause of transmission overheating. Honda refused to take any ownership of transmission failure & refused my plea for any assistance with the $3500 I had to pay Honda dealership for rebuilding the transmission. I still feel, with the low mileage on my van & with the heat discoloration of parts inside the transmission, Honda is responsible for the premature failure of transmission & the cost to the rebuilt the transmission. The 2004 recall letter clearly states "if heat discoloration exists, the dealer will replace transmission". The letter further states that "this work will be done free of charge". I truly feel Honda is refusing to honor the intent of the 2004 recall letter.

31 Transmission Failure problem of the 2003 Honda Odyssey

Failure Date: 09/14/2014

When accelerating from first gear to second gear at approximately 10-20 mph the vehicle seems to hesitate than jump into third gear. The distance from store to home is 3 miles with numerous stop lights. During this stop and go trip it happened 3 times. I had the vehicle towed to the facility where I take my vehicles for service. The diagnosis came back that the transmission is failing and it needed to be rebuilt. Estimated cost is $3000-$4000. This vehicle was recalled in 2004 for it's transmission, it has less than 15000 miles. I don't know what the fix was by freeway Honda in santa ana, CA. Today it is 96500 miles. What is american Honda's responsibility? apparently the fix did not help in prolonging the durability of the transmission. What is the best course of action available to me.

32 Transmission Failure problem of the 2005 Honda Odyssey

Failure Date: 08/20/2014

Complete transmission failure due to internal heat build-up and gear disintegration.

33 Transmission Failure problem of the 2004 Honda Odyssey

35 Transmission Failure problem of the 2005 Honda Odyssey

Failure Date: 07/17/2014

Bought our 2nd Odyssey in may 2014. Used. 153000miles. Took to Honda dealer to make sure all service was up to date. Oil and transmission fluid changed. They said everything was good despite a shudder we felt at 40 45 mph. Driving in July on a 12 hr family trip and we hear a high pitched whine only upon acceleration. The transmission failed. Left us stranded 14 hrs from home. Had to borrow a van from a family member to get all 7 of us home again. The car is now in the shop , needing a $2200. Repair. Not happy with Honda!! the 2000 Odyssey has had 3 transmissions put in, the 1st tranny was recalled by Honda and replaced at no cost @ 80k. The 2nd tranny we paid for and failed at 180k. Thought the 2005 model had the tranny problem fixed. Apparently not! buyer beware! we will never purchase another Honda.
