5 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2022 Honda Odyssey

Failure Date: 06/12/2021

On 6-10-21, we purchased a 2022 Honda Odyssey from millennium Honda, hempstead, NY. On the drive home, my husband immediately noticed a strong odor & felt the car acting strange on gear (like a shift that was out of place) but thought it was just part of being a new car. On 6-11-21, I drove the car with my 2 kids (2 & 5) and mom and she noticed a strong odor like "burnt rubber". The infotainment system froze & shut down twice. The car felt strange when I was accelerating. On 6-12-21, I was driving with my children on the NJ garden state parkway & approximately 40 minutes into the ride, the rpm needles starting oscillating very quickly between gears. The car felt strange when I was trying to accelerate. The infotainment system froze at least 2 to 3 xs. We arrived at our destination, parked the car and turned it off. That evening as I was driving back home on the parkway approx. 20 minutes into the drive the rpm needles started oscillating very quickly, the car started shifting gears and making loud sounds. I tried to move to the right shoulder as there was a lot of traffic but the car would not accelerate despite pressing hard on the gas pedal. A few minutes later a warning message displayed "transmission temperature near limit. Performance may be reduced. " I pulled the car over horrified. We called the dealership & Honda roadside service but they could send a tow truck because I was on a state highway. My husband came to get us and after an hour he was able to slowly drive the car on "sport mode" at about 25 m/p/h. We reported the incident to our dealership and Honda America operations & they have opened a case number. The vehicle was towed today to a local Honda dealer for assessment. This is a signficant safety issue that poses risk of harm and death to drivers. Honda markets this vehicle to families & my family's life was put in jeopardy immediately upon purchase. This car was out of service within 48 hours of sale.

14 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2002 Honda Odyssey

Failure Date: 06/21/2012

The transmission has been slowly slipping since about 170,000 miles. I have been driving it slowly and being careful when it shows a struggle switching into the lower gears. Yesterday it really jerked when switching from 2nd to 3rd gear and the engine light and tcs light came on. I pulled off into the nearest subdivison and turned off the vehicle. I then restarted the 2002 Honda Odyssey and the tcs light went out but the engine light stayed on. I am concerned that this transmission was part of an earlier recall and I never got the chance to replace the transmission and now I am stuck paying full price for a transmission.

16 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2004 Honda Odyssey

Failure Date: 09/01/2011

I have a 2004 Honda Odyssey with 111,111 miles and we currently live overseas in england. My check engine and tcs light came on five days ago and since then it has been down hill. It has trouble getting into reverse and now it is scipping really bad in 2nd and 3rd gear. I took it to the Honda and since it is us spec and has to ship the transmission from the states it will cost 7500 pounds and with the exchange rate it would be about 12000 dollars. We do not have many choices as they are not many shops that will work on american spec cars. We loved the van up until this all staredwe have to make the choice to get rid of the car as it is not worth that much. We are really in a bind as we are a family of six and this is our only transportation. Information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. C. 552(b)(6).

19 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2003 Honda Odyssey

Failure Date: 08/08/2011

Vehicle popped out of gear while moving at 50mph and would not accelerate. Upon stopping on side of road and shifting from d to park and back to d, the van was able to move for a few hundred yards. At 35mph it popped out of gear again. Did same thing with transmission and was able to "limp" home as long as vehicle stayed under 30mph. Towed vehicle to dealer and found out transmission is bad. I have a 7yr/105,000 mile warranty, but it expired last year. I only have 103,000 miles on the van. The repair is quoted at $4200. I have complete and timely service records at a Honda dealership for the life of the van.

20 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2001 Honda Odyssey

Failure Date: 08/01/2011

The transmission in our 2001 Odyssey went out for the second time after just 45,000 miles. It was originally "repaired" by Honda under terms of their settlement of a class action lawsuit. But according to the transmission shop we took it to, the "repair" did not fix the underlying design flaw. It is well known that Honda Odyssey and other Honda transmissions have a design flaw. Ours went out on a busy highway as we were traveling a busy highway at about 10 pm. Luckily the car briefly recovered and we were able to continue driving but it could have been a very hazardous situation.

25 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2002 Honda Odyssey

Failure Date: 07/27/2011

On two occasions during the past six months I noticed the "d" light for my transmission selector flashing. Once I restarted the vehicle, the flashing stopped and did not occur again. On July 27 while on a trip to canada with less than 78,000 miles on the vehicle, I again noticed the "d" light flashing. I also noticed abnormal transmission operation. I took the vehicle to a Honda dealer in cornwall, ontario, canada, where they read the codes as "p1740" for 4th pressure switch failure and "p0710" for atf temperature sensor failure. They reset the codes, and I was able to drive the vehicle home. However, the next day the "d" light was flashing again. My local dealer in bloomington, illinois read the same two codes from the system and charged me $430 for replacing those two sensors. I called Honda America, and a representative contacted me. She told me Honda would not assist with the repair since the dealer told her that I had a non-Honda aftermarket transmission cooler installed. I've had no such device installed. She acknowledged that my Odyssey had been part of the 2004 recall and any potential problem with the transmission had been repaired. She told me that the local dealer determined my transmission issue was caused by improper trailer towing. The van has towed a light trailer about four times and never over lengthy distances. I was not towing a trailer on the trip to canada. The Honda representative refused to acknowledge that 2002 Odyssey's have a known defective transmission that routinely fails with less than 80,000 miles.

The contact owns a 2002 Honda Odyssey. The contact stated that while driving approximately 40 mph, the transmission unexpectedly shifted into second gear with a violent jerk. Suddenly, the engine warning indicators illuminated until the engine was turned off. The failure continued to occur during acceleration. On a separate occasion, the same failure occurred while in reverse. The vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer, where they detected that the transmission fluid was burnt and discolored. Also, there were internal malfunctions which required the transmission to be replaced. The transmission was rebuilt. The technician stated that the vehicle was previously repaired under a recall associated with NHTSA campaign id number 04v176000 (power train: automatic transmission). The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 60,000.

My family and I were traveling on the freeway with cruise control set and began smelling smoke and then started seeing smoke behind our families vehicle. We immediately pulled over and found transmission fluid all underneath and on back of our vehicle. We managed to make it to a Honda dealer and after 3 hours of "we're not really sure" we were told "Honda" told them our torque diverted was bad and our transmission needed to be replaced. $5000!!.

33 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2003 Honda Odyssey

Failure Date: 07/16/2011

I was driving on the freeway about a mile outside of rawlins, wy and the rpm indicator suddenly went all the way to the top and then smoke started coming out from under the hood. I decided to drive it into rawlins although it was slipping gears and I had a hard time getting it to shift from 2nd to 3rd gear. I had to drive very slowly and carefully and when I got to the gas station in rawlins, there was tranny fluid all under the car and on the under side of the car. So I called and took it to a mechanic just before they closed. He quickly checked it and said it probably just needed a transmission service. So my boyfriend and I towed it to casper, wyoming and took it to the Honda dealership there. They checked it and it came up with 3 malfunction codes p0710n/p0780/p1750. So it needed a new transmission. The mileage is at 148417 and I have only owned the vehicle for about a year now. It has been well taken care of and there was no previous indication that it had any problems. I was told it would cost me between $3200-$4500 to have a new transmission put in my car. I do not have the money for that. So now I have no vehicle for my family.

34 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2000 Honda Odyssey

Failure Date: 06/30/2011

The 4-speed automatic transmission in 2000 Honda Odyssey models had serious problems with transmission durability. Honda spokesman mike spencer stated that four-speed models were afflicted with a bad bearing that could break apart, scattering fragments of metal that clogged fluid passageways in the transmission, causing it to shift erratically. [11] Honda responded to the problems by extending the warranty on the transmission on u. S. A. '99-'01 models to 7 years or 100,000 miles (160,900 km). A class action settlement further extended coverage to 109,000 miles (175,400 km) or 93 months for some '99-'01 Odysseys in the u. S. A. [12] canada is not included. The five-speed automatic was first installed in Odyssey in the 2002 model, but general reliability of the transmission did not improve until 2004 according to consumer reports. Mike spencer, a spokesman for Acura, said that the five-speed models typically were damaged by premature wear of the third-gear clutch pack. As the clutch friction material abraded, it scattered bits inside the transmission case, clogging fluid lines and causing erratic shifting. Drivers might suffer slipping, poor or no shifts, or sudden down-shifts from 5th gear to 2nd gear.
