36 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2003 Honda Odyssey

Failure Date: 06/09/2011

Bought my Odyssey used, certified with the 7yr/100k mi warranty from a Honda dealership in alexandria, va in may 2006 with less than 20,000 miles on it. Have had it serviced by my local Honda dealership exclusively since purchasing. Less than 24 hours ago (at about 99000 miles), I experienced my first odd experience with shifting up/down while at expressway and freeway speeds. I returned home within 50 miles and parked the car until I could get it to the dealership (2 miles from my house). First thing this morning (about 7:30 am), took the Odyssey to the dealership for a diagnostic of the transmission and to have the brakes checked and/or replaced as needed as well as any other routine maintenance that might be needed. Received a phone call from the service department at the dealership about 1 pm today and was told that I needed a new transmission, as the old one was shot. The price quoted to me for a remanufactured transmission and control module was about $5000, not what I wanted to hear or was expecting. I took my vehicle in last just a few months ago for an oil change and any regular maintenance needed, expecting any abnormalities would be noted. I would have been due for another oil change about now, but I just recently changed the oil and oil filter myself, less than 3000 miles ago. How is it that a supposedly reliable vehicle can, without warning, go from 100% functioning to needing a major drive component replacement? I just called Honda corporate for assistance with this, as a major equipment failure of this nature shouldn't be dropped on the consumer, and I have read many similar issues with this model year transmission. I'd be happy paying 25-50% of the costs, with a minimum 36k mi/ 3 yr warranty on the transmission. This would only be the second major expense I've had to pay on the van, as the first one was the regularly scheduled timing belt replacement, which was done well before the typical mileage mark.

37 Automatic Transmission problem of the 1999 Honda Odyssey

Failure Date: 06/03/2011

When I try to advance suddenly, accelerate or some times it's like I'm in neutral; and this is every time I used the van, my concern is that I can crash or someone could hit me, I tryed to repair it last year the same problem with the transmission but in less than a year I have the same problem again.

38 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2001 Honda Odyssey

Failure Date: 05/29/2011

2001 Honda Odyssey Mini van. I am the 2nd owner of the minivan. The tcs light came on and the d started blinking. I lost power and it was like in a high gear and would not take off. I about got hit by another vehicle and it would have hurt me and my children. I called Honda. They said there was a warranty extention but no recall. I do not know why they would extend the warranty if there was no problem. This is how people get hurt and have accidents. It is terrible that America would allow these vehicles to be on the roads. I paid good money for a "dependable" vehicle, that is not dependable and the problems are widely known. I just wish I would have found some info out about these vehicles before I bout it. The vehcile barely has 100k.

39 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2003 Honda Odyssey

Honda transmission problem. When the vehicle switch from 2nd gear to 3rd gear, the vehicle accelarate to high rpm but doesn't move enough causing go slow for a while. Not any responsible answer from Honda.

40 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2001 Honda Odyssey

Failure Date: 05/25/2011

I am on my 3rd failed transmission from Honda with my 2001 Odyssey. It seems they go out every 60,000-80,000 miles. The first two were replaced with a fight all the way, but nevertheless replaced. Now they absolutely wont replace it because they go by the cars mileage and years, not the transmissions. I'm so frustrated and definitely would like to be a part of a class action suit if it ever comes to be. I have 3 children and thought this would be a wonderful family car, and assumed reliable since it's Honda, but I have been hugely disappointed. I want to know if there is anything I can actually do. It's not fair for a large corporation to make the consumer who believed in their product suffer and have to deal with this. I have been out of a car with 3 children, including an infant, for 9 mo now. Very sad this can happen with no repercussions. I want to do something about this, not just for myself, but to not let them get away with this.

42 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2003 Honda Odyssey

Failure Date: 05/04/2011

Today, while driving my kids to school, my 2003 Honda Odyssey started to act funny. The engine revved up and down. The car started shifting gears up and down when driving at the same constant speed. Then, the tcs light and check engine light came on. Also, the d in the shifter display started flashing. Barely had time to pull part way into a mall parking lot driveway, halfway out of traffic before the car lost all momentum and stopped. Had it towed to the dealer and they say the transmission needs to be replaced. Car has been serviced by dealer and authorised Honda mechanic at suggested intervals since the van was bought off the lot new.

44 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2003 Honda Odyssey

Failure Date: 05/02/2011

We bought our 2003 Honda Odyssey from a private party in may 2008 with an odometer of 46,000 miles. We have been well satisfied with the van since then. We now have 101,000 miles. We were visiting our daughter & family in oxford, ms and were returning home to rock hill, SC near tupelo, ms (about 50 miles) when the tachometer revved up to 5000+rpm. We had aaa tow it to a shop in tupelo who diagnosed a burned up transmission. The shop estimate of repair time was 8. 1 hrs based on the guide the owner said it took about that time to remove the defective transmission. When calling aaa we told them to take it to any shop that could repair it. I will be contacting Honda about assistance on the repair costs, even though it was not the Honda dealer. We have maintained the vehicle faithfully accoording to the manual.

48 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2002 Honda Odyssey

Failure Date: 04/15/2011

Failure of Honda Odyssey 2002 transmission. While driving, the van randomly stops responding to acceleration and slows down, creating very unsafe driving conditions on the highway. It seems, the Honda Odyssey transmission recall work done in 2004 was a temporary fix and it delayed the failure rather than fixing it.

49 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2003 Honda Odyssey

Started slipping on a major street. . . . Leaving me in a dangerous position. Occurred at 159. 00 miles after being serviced at the original dealer I purchased from. Was first told 4300. 00 for rebuilt. Got Honda involved, and it was reduced to 1900. 00 after voicing my complaint.

Dealer service dept says transmission is bad and needs to be replaced. Found several websites documenting this same problem. Honda refused to provide any financial assistance on repair. Told me it will cost $5000. I ended up going to local transmission shop and rebuilt for $2000. Honda is doing pritality for some customer. If you have you vehicle serviced in Honda dealer then they consider giving some discount. What came out of this is, other shop like firestone, mineky, merlin people are not professional. If that is true, then those shops should be closed. When we buy car, Honda does not tell us to do service only to their shop.

52 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2004 Honda Odyssey

Failure Date: 03/30/2011

I own Honda Odyssey 2004, 170000 miles. The transmission had the code p0730. When I went to a dealership they gave estimates for repairs or replacement. Calling to Honda USA I found that there was a recall on transmissions in 2004. Also, they told me that recall was done on my vehicle. Talking to other owners, I found that there is no issue with the mileage, 120000 or 150000 we have the same problems with sleeping gears and codes. After talking to Honda case manager, they told me that Honda would not pay for replacement. They would not confirm the conversation or willing to sent any letters of outcome of this case. The van was purchased from the Honda dealer in 2009 for $17,000 and dealer gave one year warranty.

53 Automatic Transmission problem of the 1999 Honda Odyssey

Failure Date: 03/29/2011

Honda Odyssey 1999 model auto transmission issue. In my particular case, it occurred pulling out of a parking lot into a busy street and the Odyssey struggled to get up to a safe speed slipping it's way into various gears. I never thought about it but honestly this could have killed me and my family as we were attempting to pull out into a busy street. Thank goodness I was not rear ended or worse and was able to pull the van into the most immediate parking lot. When I searched in the internet there are lot many complains on Honda Odyssey about the similar issues and Honda has not done anything to address this issue so far. Would like to request to consider this case and make necessary actions at the earliest before we loose more lives due to this issue.

54 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2001 Honda Odyssey

Car was serviced regularly by 1st owner at Honda dealer, and she was never informed about a possible tranny problem. I am the second owner, called dealer, was told too bad and goodby, I have owned 4 new Hondas and am shopping for a new car for my son, I have always bought Honda, but now no way, they have had too many Odyssey tranny probloms and know it is there poor design. All my other Hondas I never had a tranny replaced, I have a corrolla 95 with 25000 miles and runs like a top. Another I sold to a friend some years back and he has had no problems. Now my oddysey was cruising down the highway 8 weeks ago and at 50 miles an hour felt like someone slames into the rear end, it locked up and ran off the side of the road, my wife sufferd neck pain that is getting worse, should have had her taken to hospital that instant but she thought it was just a sprain, a few weeks l later it is determined a possible herniation, she is a paraplegic from the waist down due to an old injury, and now is getting numbness in her hands, and possible surgery, all because Honda decided to sweep the problens with this dangerous vehicle under the rug, if Honda of America thinks this is over, they have another thing coming,.

56 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2003 Honda Odyssey

Failure Date: 03/20/2011

Noticed hard shifting into reverse of my 2003 Honda Odyssey with just under 80,000 miles. A few weeks after that, persistent slipping of the transmission into neutral (causing stall) was noted and addressed by a dealer. Dealer could not reproduce slippage and I was told to bring it back when it happened again (difficult when it stops on the side of the road). Dealer quoted me approx. $4500 for transmission replacement, which is more than half what the van is worth. All transmission servicing was done according to Honda service advice.

57 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2003 Honda Odyssey

Failure Date: 03/18/2011

Van will sometimes stall in second gear, necessitating that I either step on the brake or shift into neutral before shifting back into drive. This is not a problem when I'm the only one on the road, but becomes a safety issue when turning corners or accelerating in heavy traffic. 2003 Honda Odyssey with 136,000 miles. Honda dealer says that the transmission and computer must be replaced completely.

59 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2003 Honda Odyssey

Failure Date: 03/15/2011

We had purchased our 2003 Honda Odyssey brand new from a Honda dealership after extensive browsing, researching, and comparing, we felt Honda was the way to go due to their reputation for "making quality vehicles that last a long time and work great. " how wrong we were. We babied this van. Made sure it got any oil, lube, or fix it needed and have the documentation to prove it. Shortly after buying it we had received a recall notice regarding problems that year's model had with the v6 transmissions, so we took it over and had them fix what was "supposedly" the problem. In April, 2009 we decided we'd get a detailed "full servicing" done and fix any issues or potential issues the Odyssey had at that time which, after all the repairs, cost $1,300. At that time they had performed a complete transmission fluid change along with everything else. Last Tuesday while I was driving home I was going about 50 mph when the transmission just completely stalled in the middle of the road causing the car behind me to swerve into oncoming traffic. I took it straight to a shop nearby who then showed me that the transmission fluid was so burnt up it was black and thick like engine oil. After initially assuming from the looks of it that I hadn't ever had a tfc, he was shocked when I told him it had not even a year and a half ago. The next day I took it to the Honda dealership where they told me it would cost $5200 to fix. I then asked why, if the tranny went out just because, was the tran. Fluid so burnt up after only a year. They basically said they couldn't do anything for me in regards to owning up and replacing the defected transmission which they should have done in the first place when the recall happened back in 2004! I refuse to pay for this and am demanding that Honda take care of this transmission so I can sell this van and never buy another Honda again. Go ahead and google "2003 Odyssey transmission". It's horrifying to see how many stories are just like mine and unresolved.

60 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2005 Honda Odyssey

64 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2004 Honda Odyssey

Failure Date: 02/28/2011

February 29, 2011: I own a 2004 Honda Odyssey with 136,961 miles. I loved loved loved my Honda, until now. Tcs & check engine lights came on. Took to my local repair shop and they got the codes p0700at & p0740tc. They advised I take to the dealer because it was a transmission issue which they don't. Dealer said could find nothing wrong with transmission but battery was weak and timimg belt & timing belt holder needed replacement. After paying $1200 I picked up the van and drove it home. The next morning the tcs & engine came on again. Took it back to the dealer. They said local repair shop must have erased the transmission coded when they check them and that is why they didn't see them and thought there was nothing wrong with transmission even though I told them there was something wrong with it. They said I will need a new transmission. I called Honda America to file a case. They took my information and then told me there was nothing they could do to assist me. I asked to speak with a supervisor who told me the same thing. I don't know what to do. We are a one income family. I am a stay at home mom who takes care of her 92 year old grandfather who has alzheimers. We bought a Honda because we have always loved how dependable they are and now I don't have a car. With so many cases of transmission problems, I can't believe Honda won't back up their product. I can't afford a new transmission and have no idea how I am going to get my kids and my grandpa to school, doctors appointments, etc.

65 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2001 Honda Odyssey

Failure Date: 02/25/2011

Honda Odyssey lx - 2001 model year I had a check engine and a tcs indicator light that came on. Took it to an Honda authorized mechanic and he said it needs a new transmission. I called Honda America customer service and was told that they cannot help. Eventhough there is recall with this issue and Honda has offered to pay for repair (limited by 7 yrs 9 months or 109k miles). Internet search with edmunds and other consume sites indicates this problem is a widespread manufacturing defect and Honda is refusing to help pay for repair even if its limited.

66 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2004 Honda Odyssey

Failure Date: 02/18/2011

At less than 87,000 miles, my 2004 Honda Odyssey needs a new transmission. One month ago, the Honda dealer performed a transmission service on the car as routine maintenance and then it started slipping within 3 weeks. I have read that countless other people have had the same issue with 1999-2004 Odysseys and that the warranty was extended on 1999-2001 models. My 2004 had a recall that supposedly fixed the issue, and yet, at this low mileage, I am now faced with a $5,000 repair on a car that has been well-maintained. Honda has also issued many tsbs on these transmissions and knows there is a problem. Nhtsa should force them to replace all transmissions in all Odysseys free of charge.

67 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2003 Honda Odyssey

Failure Date: 02/18/2011

The transmission on my Honda Odyssey is failing starting just before 100,000 miles. It lurches into gear especially up an incline and when it put into reverse. I have keep meticulously care of the car and have the records to prove it. I spoke with the service manager at our local dealer and it would cost me $3750, which is considered a reduced price from them. This is a documented problem with Honda starting with their recall 04v176000 and it is a disgrace that they aren't held accountable.

68 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2003 Honda Odyssey

Failure Date: 02/14/2011

I bought a used 2003 ex from carmax in 2006 with 36k miles on it. It now has 82k miles on it. We have taken good care of it and always serviced it at a Honda dealer. A montha ago we occasionally started to feel bumpy shifting of the gears between 20-40 mph. The problem slowly worsened and the check engine light came last week. I got into the service center to get it checked up and was told that I needed a new transmission. I couldnt believe it ! we have always bought and stuck to Honda for its reliability and longevity. Apparently we were wrong ! the quote given by them for the repairs was $4521 + tax !! I am still dumbfound and infuriated. This is a serious safety hazard which has been un-acknowledged by the parent company. Please do something about. Honda is taking the american consumer for a ride. Their compensation package offered for the tranny by the Honda is very adhoc and suspect.

My husband experienced a catastrophic breakdown of the transmission in our 2003 Honda Odyssey while he was driving on the freeway. The car just stopped working at 65 mph. He was able to partially pull off the road and another vehicle stopped to help push him off completely. He had to call a tow truck which cost $150 to tow the vehicle to our home town and our repair center. Our Odyssey has 136,000 miles on it and has always been meticulously maintained. The new transmission that was required cost $4700 and we were without a vehicle for 12 days.
