The fuel tank shield for my 2001 Honda Passport is completely rusted out. Upon researching the situation I have encountered quite a few people having this same problem. I am scared to even drive the vehicle as this shield is "barely" holding the tank up and could fail at any moment thus dropping the tank.

This model 2001 Honda Passport has a history of frame rust. There was one recall 2010 but it did not address tank shield rust - only rear axle parts. The Passport has 72373 miles and the Honda dealer wants to charge for a report requested by Honda motors. *** this point I do not know if the gas tank is going to fall out. ****.
Tl-the contact owns a 2000 Honda Passport. The contact stated that the vehicle was included in the recall associated with NHTSA campaign id number 10v436000 (suspension: rear). The vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer where the brackets were repaired under the recall. The contact was informed that the frame, which was connected to the brackets, was severely rusted, corroded, and showed signs of breakage. The dealer would not repair the frame because it was not covered under the recall. The contact also stated that after the recall repair, fuel would leak from the bottom of the fuel tank while refueling. The dealer was notified and the contact was informed that they would send a tow truck to pick the vehicle up. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure, but offered no assistance. The failure mileage was 132,000. The VIN was unknown. Sm.

A few years back my trailing linkage on both sides of vehicle rusted away from frame. The drivers side was first and I was traveling at 50 mph. Hit pot hole and drivers side linkage broke off. Causing me to fish tail in traffic and almost crash. Now I have two cracks in my frame and the rear cross member is rusted through. I have also had the fuel tank support fixed and welded back onto my truck. This will cost me thousands to fix to hopefully make it a drivable vehicle again. Or. American Honda can buyout these vehicles from these owners.
The contact owns a 1998 Honda Passport. While having the vehicle serviced by an independent mechanic for unrelated issues, the contact was informed that the fuel tank was leaking abnormally. The vehicle was then taken to an authorized dealer where the failure was confirmed and the contact was advised that the failure could not be repaired. In addition, the dealer also advised that the under frame was severely rusted. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure and current mileage was 141,709.

Noticed that fuel gauge is not working properly because it went empty even though I have a tank full of gas. I did some internet research and found out that this is related to a defective 'fuel sending unit'. It affects Honda Passports and isuzu rodeo vehicles .

1999 Honda Passport - fuel gauge continually reads empty when gauge reaches about 1/2 tank. Have driven for over 200 miles on empty with gas light on as I calculate mileage instead of relying on the gauge. Seems to be numerous reports on this issue - would like to see investigation and/or recall. Very frustrating as I like the car. This is becoming the norm versus the exception. At first the fuel light would never come on when the tank was nearing empty. Now it stays on pretty much all of the time. When I stop for gas, I have yet to put more than 10 gallons in; thus, I've only used one-half tank!.
Consumer states that rear cup holder keeps opening up, causing the kids in the back seat to trip over the cup holder. Dealer notified. This had been going on since purchase. The cup holder opened up on its own. The consumer's child had tripped over it on numerous occasions and resulted in scrapes and scratches. TSB# 98-027. Honda refused service. The fuel gauge worked intermittently, it was not reading when the gas tank was full and finally it did not move from empty at all.
This is the third Honda I have owned, but the only one with problems. The first two had over 300,000 miles combined. . . . No problems. This really isn't even a Honda, it is an isuzu. When I purchased the car, I was told that all parts inside and out were made by Honda and that isuzu supplied only the seatbelts and the actual car frame. I have had the a/c blower replaced two times, the first time was under warranty. After the first replacement, the cd player stopped working and then the car started experiencing electrical problems. When I turned on the blinker, the a/c went out along with the auto transm. Spent over $150 plus cost of rental car and Honda said the probl. Was with the trailer hitch. I did not pay for repair. . . They wanted over $600. . . However, when the car was given back, mysteriously the cd player begain working and so did the a/c. . . Checked and they replaced the blower (although they said they didn't do anything) as soon as I picked up the car. . . No more problems during that time. A year later (no longer under warranty) the a/c blower works intermittenly, the transmission today just started to manually shift itself from 2 to 3rd gear and makes a hard clunking sound. A few months ago, it was shifting itself from drive to neutral or low and then back to drive. Also, the fuel sending unit is inoperable. . . The tank registers empty and the light flashes constantly. Heard this is a known problem for isuzu rodeos and Passports. I even work with someone who has a 99 rodeo and has the same problems, but his fuel sending unit went out while he was under warranty. The Honda dealer down here wants over $600 for repair. I feel mislead. I purchased Honda due to success on my other two Hondas. I could have saved over $10,000 and purchased an isuzu rodeo, but I thought by purchasing a Honda, I was getting a reliable SUV. I will never purchase another Honda/isuzu again. . . I have gotten no support from the Honda dealers. Too many problems with this model!.

Fuel system problem: fuel gauge frequently has begun to drop to a reading of zero when the car is not moving but running. The reserve light will blink and the fuel gauge will not show any fuel reading until the car begins moving again. It can take several minutes before a correct reading is shown. Intake manifold system failure: date and mileage is approximated, will locate records with exact date and mileage. Both left and right side intake manifold gaskets were reported as "cracked" by the dealer and replaced at a charge of $400 (not under warranty). Engine idled roughly and stalled prior to repair. TSB from Honda is available.

This letter is to complain about the lack of service I recently received when speaking to a customer service representative. I purchased my Passport in August of 1998. Since it was purchased, my rear beverage holder failed to stay closed. The dealer stated that, ?it is just the way it was designed. The strike plate seems to fail to make proper contact with the magnet. On numerous occasions, my three-year old daughter has tripped upon this beverage holder. Last year, my fuel gauge started to work intermittently, not reading full when full, dropping to empty when the tank was full, and finally, not moving off of empty. As a matter of fact, I brought my car into my local dealer to have my air conditioning system checked and the technician mentioned to me that he couldn?t take my car for as long of a test drive as intended because my tank was empty. I told the technician ahead of time that the fuel gauge didn?t work. I came across two Honda technical service bulletins that cover these problems. The first, bulletin 98-027 was issued on may 11, 1999 and covers all 1998 Passports. It describes the symptom that I am experiencing one or both of the magnetic latches do not hold the rear beverage holder closed. In addition, it describes the corrective action as replacing the rear console cover. If discovered during the warranty period, the bulletin allows the repair to be made for free. If discovered outside of warranty, the bulletin requires the district service manager or zone office to give consideration before work is to begin. The second, technical service bulletin 99-004, was issued on September 14, 1999 and covers cars through VIN number 4s6c. 58w. W4424533. My VIN number is 4s6ck58w6w4424526.
