36 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 08/15/2024

Driving home from work, my truck began to have a ticking sound from r/h front engine area. I drove the vehicle home. By the time I reached home the ticking sound became much louder. So, I shut off the vehicle and made an appointment with the dealership. I gingerly drove my truck to the dealership. By the time I arrived, I had a flashing engine light, and the sound had become much louder. The dealership looked at my truck and told me I needed an engine replacement.

37 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 08/15/2024

Engine is seized. 104k with regular and mostly dealer service, no mil, fluids were in spec.

38 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 07/12/2024

[xxx], driving under normal conditions, the 2017 Honda Ridgeline truck suddenly burst into flames from under the engine hood. No warning lights lit, only a loud and very sudden bang was heard. Only with the good fortune that other motorists flagged down my wife who was driving. She stopped immediately and they helped her escape from the truck, after she turned it off. The flames subsided but unaware of what was the issue, she called 911 emergency services, and seven firefighters arrived from opposite directions to ensure the truck would not explode or burn after a thorough investigation. The orillia, ontario opp has this event recorded as they dispatched the 911 emergency call. The next day, we had the truck towed to a local garage and it was determined after some investigation that the engine has seized. It is now understood that a Honda service bulletin #23-097 includes the safety recall for our truck. Information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. C. 552(b)(6).

39 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 06/25/2024

My 2017 Honda Ridgeline started making loud noises coming from the engine. I took it to autozone and they used there diagnostic tool and all that came up was an issue with the oxygen getting into the fuel due to an issue with the fuel injector. On my way home it stopped running as I was making a turn. Mechanic confirmed engine failure. I did research and typed my VIN into kelly blue book recall section and 7 recalls came up, including the engine. But when I called Honda they said only 2 recalls were associated with my VIN. I take good care of my truck and there is not reason why my engine would fail unless there was an issue with manufacturing, or one of the other recalls caused the engine to fail. I purchased my truck for $30k a few years ago and I can’t afford for it to completely inoperable and am certain the engine seized because of a manufacturing issue.

40 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 05/27/2024

On our way home the motor started ticking loudly and more and more loss of power. All the dash lights came on with the check engine light. We called the dealer and they said to bring it in. We babied it another mile and could no longer go more than 20 mph. We pulled over as soon as we could and the motor couldn’t go any more. Had it towed to the dealership and they said the whole fuel injection system failed and then discovered the rod bearings were destroyed. The car only had 84,000 miles on it and we have only owned it since November of 2023 we had the last service done at the dealership. I know the VIN isn’t right for the recall of the 2017 Ridgelines rod bearings but so many other people have had the same problem. I feel it should at least be looked into more. I do not have a repair invoice yet because it is still at the dealership waiting for a motor to be delivered to put in it.

41 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 05/14/2024

Our 2017 Honda Ridgeline started making a rattling sound coming from the engine compartment. We took it to our local mechanic, who determined the engine rod bearing had failed and the engine needed to be replaced. The vehicle was then taken to the local Honda dealer for repair in case it was covered under NHTSA campaign number: 23v751000 (engine and engine cooling). The dealer diagnosed that the engine rod bearing had failed and the engine needed to be replaced, but would not cover cost of the repair since the truck's VIN was not included in the recall even though the truck had experienced the failure listed in the recall. The truck had only 72,000 miles on it and had been regularly maintained. Per my mechanic, it should not have failed in this manner. In fact, he'd never seen a failure like this on a relatively low mile vehicle that had been maintained. I believe that the recall needs to be re-examined to see if the scope needs to be broadened to include more vins. Based on my mechanics input and the nature of the current recall, I don't believe this failure was just an "bad luck" outlier.

42 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 04/08/2024

Driver detected faint internal engine noise. There were no warning lamps or other messages displayed. Vehicle was taken to Nissan north, 8645 north high street, worthington, OH 43065, (614) 436-2768 ("shop"). Shop diagnosed the internal engine noise as "connecting rod knock". Engine then seized up while in the possession of shop. Engine was required to be replaced. See attached Nissan north invoice. Prior to the above described incident, vehicle owner had not experienced problems or symptoms with the involved engine. Owner has become aware that the engines in 2017 Honda Ridgelines are now the subject of an NHTSA safety investigation.

43 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 04/04/2024

Rod bearings failed, leaving metal shards in the pistons which causes engine the to overheat and seize or catch fire. The engine noise was getting increasingly loud over a 3 day period so I took it into the dealership (Honda of seattle) and they found rod bearings had worn apart and were floating around inside the engine. This requires a full engine replacement. There were no warning lamps.

44 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 03/19/2024

There was an engine failure with a rod bearing in the engine. I believe the engine is still available at the shop that replaced it for review. I have already raised this issue with Honda and they were not interested in seeing the motor. The truck stalled out on the highway on the way to work during high traffic time. The truck was looked at by an independent auto repair shop. After the failure the engine did restart, and it was obvious by the noise that it had a bearing failure. There were no symptoms that the engine would fail before failure. At the time of the failure the engine light did come on. After the failure I learned that this exact year and model of truck had a recall for the exact issue that I had. I contacted Honda dealership before I had the repair completed and they said they would reach out to the Honda representative to see if there was anything they were willing to do. Nobody got back to me until several weeks later after I contacted Honda customer service on 3/21/24. Honda customer service sent me an email on 4/11/2024 after the engine was replaced. I was told since the engine was already replaced there was nothing they could do. I believe that Honda knows that this bearing recall affects many more vehicles including mine and are trying to save money by not releasing the true scope of the vehicles that may be affected. I will attach a copy of the bill for the engine replacement.

45 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 03/07/2024

Vehicle appears to have rod bearing failure and is available for inspection. Myself and family are at risk for being in a serious accident and/or stranded should catastrophic engine failure occur. Problem has been reproduced and confirmed by dealer (howdy Honda austin, TX). There is an existing technical service bulletin (TSB 24-002) for this issue and dealer believes my vehicle is affected, but my VIN does not show in affected VIN database. Vehicle has been inspected, but not affected part since that would require opening up the engine block. No warnings, just the engine knock which showed up a couple months ago. Besides taking vehicle to dealer for inspection, vehicle has been parked.

46 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 03/05/2024

Over the past 15 months, our 2017 Honda Ridgeline has been at the Honda dealership service for over 90 days, or 20% of the elapsed time. A 2nd replacement of the torque converter (3rd unit) in March 2024 has not resolved the judder/vibration, which does not occur when the engine temperature is cold. The vibration is consistently recurring once the engine has reached nominal operating temperature, when the transmission is in 4th-5th gear around 1800 rpm, 30-50 mph. Based on the dealership-attempted fixes, the dealer believes the issue is due to variable cylinder management (vcm) and active control mount (acm) degradation. The dealer, in contact with Honda tech line, have no known fix to this systemic defect. The vehicle has been 100% serviced at fisher Honda per the factory maintenance schedule. All recommended and required service, including technical service bulletins and recalls have been performed and are up-to-date. Reference earlier NHTSA id 11554673 (Nov 2023).

47 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 02/09/2024

I was in line waiting for a pick up order when all of a sudden my Ridgeline just stopped - engine kicked off - no warning lights came on ahead of this incident - there were no noises from the truck beforehand - no early indication that something like this was going to happen - thank g. . I was in line at macdonald's and not on the highway. Engine just seized. I have taken my Ridgeline to Honda - and they have said that they can't figure out why this happened - surprised for a Ridgeline with 100,000 miles - it's been serviced at appropriate times. There were some recalls on it, but not one that would cause this issue - however , we did see if the NHTSA site that many 2017 Ridgelines are being recalls due to manufacturing errors - we feel that Honda should assume some responsibility.

48 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 02/08/2024

The check engine light came on while driving on the highway. I then pulled over to check oil and coolant levels. The coolant was down but not empty, so I topped it up. I then restarted the truck and the engine was down on power and I had to limp it to the dealership. The dealership confirmed that the engine was blown, likely due to a connecting rod bearing failure. Now I am waiting for Honda to make a call on it because it is out of warranty.

49 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 02/01/2024

The contact owns a 2017 Honda Ridgeline. The contact stated that while operating the vehicle, there was a knocking sound coming from the engine compartment. The vehicle was taken to the local dealer who diagnosed that the engine rod bearing had failed, and the engine needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not yet repaired. The manufacturer was not yet contacted. The contact was informed by the service center that the VIN was not included in NHTSA campaign number: 23v751000 (engine and engine cooling). The contact stated that the vehicle had experienced the failure listed in the recall. The failure mileage was 44,000.

50 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 01/25/2024

My 2017 Honda Ridgeline began making an odd noise, so I took it to my dealer. They diagnosed failed connecting rod bearings, which have sent metal shavings throughout the engine. The only repair would be an engine swap, which would cost almost the value of the vehicle. I cannot drive the vehicle as is due to the potential of catastrophic engine failure. Certain 2017 and 2019 Ridgelines are under recall for this same issue, but mine was manufactured 5 months later than the select few 2017 Ridgelines they have included. Honda will not cover my engine under recall or goodwill. I am left with a worthless vehicle that would have been very dangerous to continue driving. Please urge Honda to expand the recall. I'm sure I am not the only one in this unfortunate situation.

51 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 01/05/2024

The engine began making an metallic clicking noise that increased with engine rpm. I made an appointment with the local Honda dealership service center as soon as possible. The Honda dealership inspected the engine valve springs and the connecting rod bearings. The connecting rod bearings had failed but I had brought the vehicle in to the service center quickly enough that the failed connecting rod bearings did not appear to damage the crankshaft. The options I was provided with were to either replace the engine or replace the connecting rod bearings and connecting rod bolts with no warranty on the work as they could not guarantee the crankshaft had not been damaged. I provided all receipts for engine oil changes, engine oil filter changes, and engine air filter changes to Honda USA. Despite having an active recall for this exact problem (connecting rod bearing failure) on other 2017 Honda Ridgeline's with the same 3. 5l v6 engine, and performing all maintenance as needed with proof provided to Honda USA they denied my claim for vehicle age and mileage. My VIN was not included on the recall. I opted to have the connecting rod bearing, and connecting rod bolts replaced at the Honda dealership and had to pay out of pocket with no reimbursement from Honda, and no warranty on the work performed.

52 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 12/30/2023

My Honda Ridgeline 2017 it started to not accelerate and a lot of lights came on. Check engine light, power steering, cruise control, abs, etc. The truck only goes 20-23 mph and it wouldn't run. Thank god I wasn't in the high or I would have crashed. I went to my nearest autozone to see what was going on and they told me that the camshaft position sensor is damage . And it do the fact that the camshaft is hitting the sensor. They took me that a lot of Honda's were having this problem. I should call the Honda dealer. I then call them and told them was had happened, they responded that it would probably need a new engine or an rebuild. A.

53 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 11/30/2023

Was driving on 2 lane highway when truck suddenly decelerated, started shuddering, so I pulled to side of road. Dash lights started cycling through warning lights, ultimately settled on saying it was an emission system problem. Car would not accelerate beyond 30-35 miles an hour after that and would even then suddenly lose power then regain it. But still could not get above 30 or 35 miles an hour. Luckily, no one was behind when this happened and I was able to pull to the side of the road. Normally this is a 55-60 mile an hour busy 2 lane highway. And I was less than a mile from home so was able to limp home. The next morning, tried to drive to the dealer, and had to return home because it would speed up to 45-50, but then would do the same thing again that I described above. Had to get the car towed to the dealer. I checked the obd scanner and it said the problem was p0087, fuel rail pressure too low. Dealer said it was that the fuel pump needed to be replaced. Vehicle has about 93,000 miles and is a 2017 model. Don't have the repair invoice yet, picking up the vehicle and paying the $1,700 dollar repair bill this afternoon. Can provide it later if you need/want it.

54 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 11/18/2023

The contact owns a 2017 Honda Ridgeline. The contact stated that after parking on the side of the road and with the engine idling, a burning odor was present coming from the vehicle. Moments later smoke and flames were seen coming from the engine compartment which caused the hood to blow open. The fire department was immediately called to the scene and extinguished the flames. During the incident the vehicle and personal property inside the vehicle were destroyed. A police report and fire report were taken at the scene and the vehicle was towed to an undisclosed location. The cause of the fire was not yet determined. The local dealer was notified of the incident. The manufacturer was not yet contacted. The failure mileage was 90,000.

55 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 10/31/2023

My wife was driving our 2017 Honda Ridgeline when the engine suddenly stopped running and she lost power steering. She was able to coast a short distance as close to the side of the road as possible. Luckily she was only a hundred yards or so from our house on a quiet side street, however if it had been 20-30 seconds earlier she would have been on the highway or in the middle of a major intersection. There were no warnings or any other indication of a problem. The engine would not start despite a full charge on the battery. After towing it to the dealer for service, the engine was completely seized and they diagnosed it as the connecting rod bearing. The only remedy offered was full engine replacement. Hours after paying $9k for the repair, we saw news articles about NHTSA campaign 23v751000 for 2017 Honda Ridgelines regarding a manufacturing error for the connecting rod bearing causing engine wear and may cause the engine to seize. Exactly the issue with our 2017 Ridgeline. Our VIN does not show in the campaign, so I believe Honda has mistakenly narrowed the breadth of the campaign or surreptitiously removed our VIN by the dealer since we had already paid on our own. There is also no way for me to verify that the replacement engine will not suffer the same issue. We opted for a used engine over oem to save money, but were intentionally not warned about the recall before making the choice.

56 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 09/20/2023

Gas smell coming from under the hood and in the cabin on my 2017 Honda Ridgeline after it warms up. ( believe this could be a safety issue because of the gas fumes. ) I contacted Honda ( manufacturer ) and was told their was no recall for this issue. I took it to the dealer and they were unable to find any leaks but stated the could do a fuel system repair for $626. 00 and a direct inject service for $240. 00 truck had no codes or messages come up.

57 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 08/27/2023

Complete engine failure at 76,333. Vehicle failed after exiting highway after slowing down to merge with traffic on side road. There was no warning lights displayed prior to failure. It left my son and I trapped in an unsafe situation. Failure could have resulted in being rear ended and/or having an abrupt stop from the engine seizing had we not exited the highway when we did. The problem was confirmed by dealer as a complete engine failure (locked up) with no confirmed cause. We were unable to diagnose at independent repair shop as dealer had removed timing belt which was confirmed by dealer as being intact. All fluids were confirmed clean and sufficiently intact. There was no indication of problem or warning lights prior to complete failure. Dash displays indicated normal temperatures and pressures.

58 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 08/26/2023

When accelerating the engine bogs down and runs rough. All warning lights come on. After shutting off the engine and restarting everything appears to run normally however the warning lights stay on the cruise control does not work. After a couple of days the warning lights went off and everything worked as normal. The same problem manifested again while accelerating. The first incident happened Aug. 26, 2023, the second incident happened on sept. 3, 2023.

59 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 08/04/2023

In August of 2023 the engine seized up. It had about 120,000. I took it to the local Honda dealership and they said the engine had no compression, engine knocking was valves and suspected bent valves in head. I was offered a used engine for about $9,000. I ended up trading the vehicle in on a new Subaru and was given $4,000 as trade-in. I just read an article that this agency is investing a crankshaft and connecting rod bearing issue with Honda engines including the make and year of my car. I think what happened to me is exactly what you are investigating.

60 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 07/27/2023

The contact owns a 2017 Honda Ridgeline. The contact stated while driving at an undisclosed speed, the vehicle made an abnormal sound. Additionally, an unknown warning light was illuminated intermittently. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic, who informed the contact that there was a fault with the emissions system. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 97,248.

61 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 01/20/2023

Lost brakes as I was trying to decelerate to make a left turn on fm 1472, still managed to come to a stop before hitting the traffic ahead of me that was also waiting to make a left turn. Smoke started to come out from the wheel wells. Put vehicle on parking, shut off engine, opened hood and found fire coming out from the back of the engine bay. Extinguished fire with a fire extinguisher, and a few minutes later, a fire dept truck arrived to hose it just to make sure it was properly extinguished. Waiting for cause and origin investigator from the insurance to inspect the vehicle.

62 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 08/22/2022

Complete engine failure at approximately 107k miles. Honda corp denied warranty consideration. I paid to have Honda dealership replace engine. Subsequently Honda issued recall notice referring to the engine failure with description similar to the repairs listed on the Honda invoice I paid. I believe the recall notice is 23v-751. I called Honda after the recall and they stated that my VIN was not included in that recall. I believe I paid to have the repairs completed instead of Honda honoring the recall.

63 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 02/28/2021

Vehicle began to display warning lights: vehicle stability assist (vsa) problem, emissions system problem, all wheel drive system problem, power steering system problem, hill start assist problem and trailer stability assist problem (tsa. ) once lights appear, the truck goes into "limp" mode restricting acceleration to 2,000 rpms making it difficult to accelerate (dangerous if pulling onto a busy road) or if lights come on while driving and rpms over 2,000 the vehicle violently down shifts making a dangerous deceleration (especially on the highway. ) Honda dealership diagnosed the problem as a bad camshaft, camshaft thrust cover and cmp sensor (as noted in Honda service news article from January 2018 a18010i version 1. ) after researching the problem I have discovered that this not uncommon for this model and year, it's a known problem by Honda resulting from a defective cam shaft. However, Honda refused to stand by their product. It's a $2,300 repair for a vehicle that is only 4 years old and 69,000 miles. I've made a complaint with Honda corp, my local Honda dealership and now NHTSA.

64 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 09/30/2019

When starting to accelerate my vehicle would become jerky up to around 40 mph. The dealership said it was poor transmission fluid and an update on software. This cost me $210!.

65 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 08/13/2019

Driving about 40mph, heard a slight pop, truck lost power and felt like the brakes had been applied. All the diagnostic icons lit, including a chime. Display went through each problem "road departure mitigation system problem" "trailer stability assist problem" "power steering systme (esp) problem" and several others. Engine didn't totally shut down and was able to drive home about a mile away.

66 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 04/25/2019

This is the second occurrence of this dangerous problem. Traveling on the freeway the vehicle suddenly lost all power, wasting lights and alleys flagging. Was able to drift vehicle to shoulder (barely avoiding a collision, this was during rush hour). Took a pic of dashboard, then turned vehicle off. Tried restarting a couple of times and power loss was still there. Waited 10 minutes restarted power back, but eating lights still flashing. Made it off freeway, took a video, called jobs roadside assistance and trotted issue. Declined tow, made my appt. And was able to return home. I am now at the dealer. Again this it's the second time this has happened, the first was 6 months and 7000 miles ago.

67 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 04/25/2019

Correction to last report. Please ignore the April 26th post. Sorry for the typos and wrong words. . This is the second occurrence of this dangerous problem. Traveling on the freeway the vehicle suddenly lost all power, warning lights and alerts flashinf. Was able to drift vehicle to shoulder (barely avoiding a collision, this was during rush hour). Took a pic of dashboard, then turned vehicle off. Tried restarting a couple of times and power loss was still there. Waited 10 minutes restarted power back, but warning lights still flashing. Made it off freeway, took a video, called Honda roadside assistance and reported issue. Declined tow, made my appt. And was able to return home. I am now at the dealer. Again this it's the second time this has happened, the first was 6 months and 7000 miles ago. In fact it exactly 6 months to the minute it occurred. Too many coincidences with this dangerous problem. Dealer has said it was a problem with the vehicle was an "accelerator pedal position connector". I'll wait and see if it happens again. Please ignore the April 26th post.

68 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 02/04/2019

On February 4th, 2019, I parallel parked my vehicle at 9am on the street. At about 4pm that day, the fire department notified me that my 2017 Honda Ridgeline was on fire. My Ridgeline was stationary, parked on the street, and it was a rainy day. The fire fighter told me the fire started under the hood in the engine area. The Ridgeline was towed to a Honda dealership in hopes of finding the cause of the spontaneous fire. The Honda dealership did not even open the vehicle and would not diagnose the cause of the spontaneous fire. This is very dangerous because the spontaneous fire can harm and potentially kill people inside or around the vehicle as well as harm nearby buildings. This is also not the first 2017 Honda Ridgeline to have this same issue.

69 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 10/19/2018

At the precise moment the odometer hit 12000 miles, the vehicle lost power, all the warning lights lit up and rolling list of problems, involving, hill control, power steering, etc. . Came on. Even after shutting it off and turning it back on multiple times the condition did not change. Honda had it towed to the dealer. After a day they could not find the problem except to say it was a low voltage issue. . Seemed to coincidental that it happened at exactly 12000 miles and I stated as much. They reset everything and it has been ok for last 150 miles.
