All three brake lights went out. We tried every basic fix but our personal mechanic says power is not going through the control module and we will need to have it specially repaired by a Hyundai professional. We recieved a citation because our brake lights unknowingly went out and none of the obvious fixes such as bulbs, fuses, or brakes switch replacement ammended the issue. We are at a loss as to how to fix this but saw recalls on other Hyundai models but not this one. We are thinking this is a similar problem. This has literally ruined our lives. We 100% depend on this vehicle and now we have nothing.

Vehicle would not shift from park to drive. Brake lights didn't illuminate. Vehicle towed to local garage, where it was determined the brake light switch was defective. 30 minutes and $80. 00 later the problem was remedied. Hyundai has had multiple recalls of their brake light switches, but each time the apply the recall to a very narrow selection of models, of which this aforementioned vehicle is not included. Stranding a 19 y/o girl in a dark parking lot at 9:30 at night could have resulted in a less favorable outcome. How many other unfortunates suffer because of a failure on the part of Hyundai to step up and fix an inexpensive part.

While driving at normal operating speed, I was alerted by another motorist that my brake lights weren't working. I replaced the brake light switch and that fixed the problem. While researching the issue, I noticed a recall of Hyundai Accents for the years prior to 2010, but the recall did not include 2010s. I verified with the dealer that I had no open recalls, so I replaced the part at my own expense. It seems the brake light switches are still not reliable in these cars.

My Hyundai Accent model year 2010 had an issue where the brake lights went out completely. Model years 2007-2009 are under an active recall for the brake light switch and my car had the same problem. I called Hyundai and they advised the switch is different but the data I can find shows the same fault exists in the 2010 as well. This is a safety issue Hyundai is refusing to fix. . . The NHTSA needs to investigate and expand the recall to other model years.
2010 Hyundai Accent rear brake lights and the rear windshield brake light do not light up when I press on the pedal. I noticed that there are a couple of complaints on for the same issue. I replaced the fuses, the bulbs, and they still do not work. I researched this and Hyundai has 4 consecutive years 2006-2009 where there is a malfunctioning brake light switch issue. I believe this issue has not been resolved and I plan on letting the dealer know this when I go there tomorrow. I feel this is a major safety issue and they should replace this free of charge given the history of this. I also tried contacting Hyundai directly and said unless there is a recall there is nothing they can do about this. Stated dealers are independent and I would have to talk to dealer about resolving this issue.
The contact owns a 2005 Hyundai Accent. The contact stated that while traveling at various speeds, the brakes seized and smoke emitted from the wheels. The contact also mentioned that the brake lights failed to illuminate when the brake pedal was depressed. In addition, the vehicle intermittently failed to shift out of park. The vehicle was taken to a private mechanic where the master cylinder and stop lamp switch was replaced. The manufacturer was contacted about the failure and informed the contact that the vehicle was not included in NHTSA campaign number 09v280000 (exterior lighting). The failure mileage was 20,680.
2008 Hyundai Accent. Consumer writes in regards to vehicle brake light switch recall notice. The consumer stated after waiting for an hour at the dealer, to have the recall performed, the dealer informed him, the recall work had been completed. However due to an issue separate from the recall, the brake lights still did not work. The dealer wanted $99 to diagnose the problem, and if it was simply the light bulbs were burned out there would be an additional 4140 for the light bulbs. The consumer and the service advisor went out to the vehicle, and when the advisor stepped on the brake pedal, the brake lights illuminated.

The brake lights on my 2008 Hyundai Accent are not working. I changed the bulbs and checked the fuse - all are ok. I suspected the pedal switch that activates the brake lights might be the problem. Went online to see if I could find any other owners with the same issue, and discovered that a recall has been commenced by Hyundai for the very problem I am experiencing. However, the 2008 Hyundai Accent was not listed in the press release that I reviewed as one of the affected models. The problem may be bigger than they think. I felt that I should advise NHTSA that the Accent model may also be one of those affected. I contacted a local dealer and they did not have it in stock, but said they would get the brake pedal switch for me. In the meantime, my car is really not safe to drive without brake lights (day or night). Please get Hyundai working on this quickly, before someone gets killed, and consider whether the design problem might be affecting more models than have been identified to date.
As I was stopped in a line of cars to drop my daughter off at school a woman tapped on my window and told me that I have no brake lights and that she almost rear-ended me because of it. I went home and checked the fuses and the bulbs; all were fine. After some online research I learned that there could be a problem with the brake light switch which is located near the brake pedal. When I contacted Hyundai customer service I was told that my make/model/year was not covered by a recall affecting the brake light switch.
My brake lights malfunctioned causing them to stay depressed and lit up until I disconnected the battery. Now they won't even come back on. I was also having issues with the shifter and it was stuck in the park position. I found out through NHTSA that Hyundai recalled thousands of vehicles for these same problems back in 2009. They said any of these malfunctions could lead to a crash. I had one representative from Hyundai tell me that they don't honor NHTSA recalls. The dealers refuse to replace the stop lamp switch on my vehicle because they won't even acknowledge the recall. The recall that began on September 2, 2009, campaign 092, the article cited to contact this puerto rican phone number 1-787-999-4310 but I can't get through. The dealerships are not very helpful at this point and in fact the service manager at one dealership was extremely rude and stated that he would not work with corporate when corporate decided to back me with the recall. He told me that since my car was having those issues that it was a safety issue and that his recommendation was that the dealership honor that and fix my vehicle, but they refuse. I have no working brake lights and I need help in resolving this issue in a timely manner. Thank you.
I own two Hyundai Accents, a 2008 and this, a 2009. Now both have had the same problem with the brake light switch becoming inoperative. Fortunately, the lack of brake lights was noticed before any accidents occurred, and the vehicles were taken to the dealer and were repaired at no charge. It seems that the recall for 2006 and 2007 should have been extended to the 2008 and 2009 Accent models (plus any others using the same brake light switch).

The brake lights all failed at the same time. My daughter was following me and noticed they weren't working. I checked the fuse and it is ok, so the next component is the switch. I researched problems with my model and noticed there was a recall for the 2007 model year for the same model car for the stop lamp switch. Maybe the same parts are being used in later model years.
The contact owns a 2007 Hyundai Accent. The contact stated that the rear brake lights failed to illuminate when the brake pedal was depressed. The manufacturer was notified of the issue and informed the contact that his VIN was not included in any recalls, including NHTSA campaign id number: 09v122000 (service brakes, hydraulic:switches:brake light) which aimed to remedy the same failure the contact had experienced. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure and current mileage was 43,000.

The consumer stated in April 2013, he received a recall notice. On November 19, 2012, his vehicle was repaired at a nationwide recognized facility, where the stop light switch was replaced, due to no brake lights. The consumer stated he followed all of the procedures of the recall notification, for vehicles already repaired. My brake lights do not illuminate when pressing on the brake pedal, and my automatic shift is stuck in park unless I press the button in the small hole located to the upper left to unlock it. I was informed by Hyundai that it sounded like I had a broken switch located by the brake pedal and that it was causing the brake lights to not register when I pressed in the brake pedal. I have an appointment for tomorrow but if there was a recall done on other VIN numbers and mine isn't listed I'm going to be upset.

Recall summary Hyundai is recalling 532,633 my 2006-2007 Accent, entourage, sonata, my 2007 azera, elantra and santa fe, my 2005-2007 tucson and my 2007-2008 veracruz vehicles. A stop lamp switch malfunction may also affect the operation of the brake-transmission shift interlock feature so the transmission shifter would not be able to be shifted out of the park position. Consequence any of these malfunctions, alone or in combination, may lead to a crash. Remedy dealers will replace the stop lamp switch free of charge. The recall began on June 29, 2009. Hello, I own a 2007 Hyundai Accent and I happened to be driving on the queensway and a lady pulled up beside me and told me that I had no rear brake lights. I brought my car back home and I conducted a search to see if there were any recalls for my vehicle with the issue that I am having. There was indeed a recall about the rear brake lamp switch. I contacted my local Hyundai dealer and they said that yes there was a recall. I brought my vehicle into the dealer the next day to find out that my car was not covered under the recall and the switch that I need was on back order because of the recall. I was very upset because my vehicle was not safe to drive and the dealer was not going to cover the issue or nor was the part even available. I contacted Hyundai canada and I explained the issue to them and they said that I was out of luck because the part was on back order and it would be a couple of months before the part would be available. I asked if they would be willing to cover a rental because it was a unsafe to drive and they said "no" that I would have to find my own way. I feel that this issue should be made aware so that issues like mine could be deal with differently. I feel that Hyundai canada could have provided me with some sort of help other then your out of luck. I rely on my car on a daily bases and I could not afford to pay over $1000 per month to have a rental car. Thank you.
Brake light switch failed. Part replaced. Old part available.
In September 2009 (exact day unknown), the brake light switch on my 2005 Hyundai Accent began intermittently failing. As a result, I was unable to shift the vehicle out of park approximately once out of every three times I started the vehicle, but was able to remedy the issue by depressing the brake pedal with an exaggerated degree of force within 1-5 attempts. On November 25, the switch ultimately failed. As a result, the vehicle would not shift out of park without employing the shift lock override. Since November 25, I employ the shift lock override but have not yet replaced the switch.
