Hyundai Azera owners have reported 46 problems related to engine and engine cooling (under the engine and engine cooling category). The most recently reported issues are listed below. Also please check out the statistics and reliability analysis of Hyundai Azera based on all problems reported for the Azera.
Vehicle started having overheating issues around August 2024, took it to mechanics to get it looked at and tried various fixes, concluding in a blown head gasket. When I took my car to a third party mechanic to fix the head gasket they found that the head bolts of the cars engine had been pulled out of the threads and said that it was a manufacturing issue. Head gasket was fixed but the car was having the same issues due to the head bolts being loose. I've taken my vehicle to the nearest Hyundai dealership and told them about the overheating and head bolts being pulled out of the threading. They ran their diagnosis and then charged $1000 for a thermometer change (which our third party mechanic had also done already) and a coolant flush, which did not fix the issue as the car would still overheating after pick up. After taking my vehicle back to the dealership they said it had a blown head gasket claiming over $14,000 dollars for an engine replacement. They failed to acknowledge the issue of head bolts being pulled of their threads which has become a common issue across their 3. 3l v6 gdi lambda ii engines, as is documented by many online. The Hyundai 2017 santa fe which also uses the 3. 3l v6 gdi lambda ii engine is currently getting an extended warranty for engine replacements for all models from 2013-2017. It's strange that Hyundai is only doing extended warranties/recalls for santa fe model cars when they have other vehicles, like my 2013 Hyundai Azera, that use the same 3. 3l v6 gdi lambda ii engine that will have similar issues. All vehicles that use the 3. 3l v6 gdi lambda ii engine should be getting recalled. Hyundai does not seem to want to take responsibility for their faulty engineering on this engine and lazily claim it to be a "blown head gasket" issue when the head bolts being pulled of the threads causes the vehicle to overheat is what is causing the blown head gasket in the first place. They dismiss it as a blown head gasket and don't look any further.

My engines head bolts have been pulled out of the threads causing the engine to overheat.
In 2023, Hyundai approved to pay for repairs of vehicles that suffer premature engine failures due to issues such as low oil, metal debris and/or fire in the engine. These issues were predominately found in the gdi engines in kia and Hyundai vehicles. This suit failed to take into account the Hyundai Azera model and the 3. 3 gdi engine. Same engine maker as the 2. 2 and 2. 4 models. My car stalled out in the middle of traffic with no warning lights for low oil or engine issues. The car was serviced previously with no coded issues noted accept excessive oil burning which was noted with all Hyundai models from the last decade. The gdi 3. 3 has the most noted issues and is the most expensive to replace from the dealer. The engines are failing before the car is broken in the manufacture is making money on the replacement engines from customers who are still trying to pay the car off.

4-15-2024 bought a used 2013 Hyundai Azera. Since day 1 it has overheating issue. Within the first 2 wks of ownership, we replaced the radiator cap, thermostat, and had engine checked for leaks at pep boys. Replacing the water pump was next. On the night of may 7th, we replaced the water pump. Cranked engine and no leakage, so I decided to take my car home which was 45 minutes away. After driving for 15-20 minutes, the temp gauge was almost topped out, so I slowed down. I was approaching a gas station in a town halfway to home and decided I needed to pull in, but the car suddenly and steadily lost power. I had barely enough power to pull into a space away from door (I just knew it was bad and I didn't want car in the business's way). Car would not crank after being shut off for about 20 minutes. I called my husband and he brought a car hauler trailer to put it on. The vehicle was checked for leaks by pepboys, but it is going for a reputable mechanic inpection soon as can be scheduled. So I had this car not even 30 days, paid cash for it (which I hope to recover) and mechanic friend of mine tells me it's a blown head gasket. From what I've read, it has the 3. 3l lambda engine causing issues for other model vehicles. Is there a recall? what options for replacement are there? anyone can inspect the car at any time. It is just taking up a space in the apartment parking lot right now.
My engine failed after only 104k miles. I took my car in to get an oil change and it had rod knock which randomly started when I had oil already in the engine. This was just a random failure because it was completely find the day before and then the next day it started when I knew I was going to put more oil in in just in case and it failed.
The contact owns a 2012 Hyundai Azera. The contact stated while driving at approximately 35 mph the vehicle was losing forward momentum. The contact stated that the vehicle stalled. The contact was able to coast to the side of the road. The low oil warning was illuminated. The contact had to leave the vehicle at the side of the road. The vehicle was not taken to a dealer or an independent mechanic. The vehicle was not diagnosed and was not repaired. The manufacturer was informed of the failure. The contact stated that before the failure, the vehicle was consuming oil at a rate requiring her to add one quart of oil weekly. The contact stated there was no evidence of a leak from the oil pan. The contact was also hearing an abnormal ticking noise coming from the engine compartment before the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 140,000.
Mechanic found metal in engine oil. Stated that the engine appeared to be "deteriorating" as the metal was not a contaminant, but instead he determined it to be from the engine itself.
The contact owns a 2013 Hyundai Azera. The contact stated that right after the vehicle had an oil change, the contact was driving at 55 mph when she noticed smoke coming from underneath the hood. The check engine warning light was illuminated. Additionally, prior to the oil change, the engine made knocking sounds while driving. The police escorted the vehicle to the side of the road. The vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic, who diagnosed that the engine needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The contact later received notification of NHTSA campaign number: 23v651000 (service brakes, hydraulic); however, the part to do the recall repair was not yet available. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure but provided no assistance. The failure mileage was approximately 142,000. VIN tool confirms parts not available.
My car caught on fire while driving.
Received recalled letter in mail for car almost 9 months ago. Hyundai has yet to issue fix. 9 months to fix a potential life threatening issue is ridiculous. To top things off we are told to continue driving the car even though it will eventually explode into a fireball of a mess after enough brake fluid leaks into electrical components. We have a 9 month old baby and the Hyundai Azera is considered our “family car”. Fix this ASAP! you’re putting families in danger. Either fix or supply families with a loaner car. Additionally, the advice from the car company is to leave car outside to avoid your house catching on fire. We are told to keep cars outside knowing these specific cars are theft liabilities.

The contact owns a 2008 Hyundai Azera. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, the abs warning light illuminated. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic, where it was diagnosed, and the failure was linked to NHTSA campaign number: 18v026000 (service brakes, hydraulic). The independent mechanic referred the contact to the dealer for the recall repair. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, where it was diagnosed that the abs module and wiring hardness had burned and needed to be replaced; however, the dealer informed the contact that the manufacturer had discontinued the parts for the repair. The contact stated that the abs, the brake, and the check engine warning lights were illuminated. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 103,539.

I have made sure that the oil was changed on my 2015 Hyundai Azera. It has consistantly used oil. And now , I noticed a disturbing sound under the hood. Now, I have found metal shavings in my oil. This is a theta engine. 6 cylinder. And according to the internet. Since 2011, Hyundai engines have been consistantly complained about and this engine needs to be added to the recall list for having the exact same manufacturing defect of metal shavings in the oil, like so many millions of other Hyundai cars. Thank you, nicol richards.

My engine stalled. It is a gdi lambda engine, which apparently has oil consumption issues.
I was driving on a highway when my vehicle started to stall. My acceleration had dropped quickly and I couldn't speed up. I put on my hazard lights and was able to drive off the closest exit. Once I got off the exit, my car stalled completely. I had to get it towed to my daughter's house because I am originally from a different city and was out of town. I had a mechanic take a look and it and they stated that he wouldn't be able to fix it because the engine that I had was under a recall. I researched the information on my engine and determined that the gdi engine that I have is the same engine that is on the Hyundai santa fe, which is currently under recall.
The contact owns a 2013 Hyundai Azera. The contact stated while at a stop light, the vehicle delayed while accelerating, and the contact heard a knocking noise coming from the vehicle. The contact turned off and restarted the vehicle and the check engine warning light illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the dealer for diagnostic test. The dealer stated that the engine was not getting any oil, and that the engine needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not contacted. The failure mileage 92,000.
Engine started knocking about 3 to 4 months ago, car keeps having random times when it won't starr. The lights came on dash nothingto the engine. The dealership has "checked" it a few times but can'tfind anything. The knocking is consistentif you drive it for more than a couple of miles. Car is available for inspection. Also my mpg has been increasingly getting worse. The gauge says 19 but I'm averaging about 12. I was advised by a mechanic (all work done on my car is at a dealership) that the Hyundai has issues with this model/year car. The santa fe and sonata on the 2013 models have been recalled. It should be noted the santa fe and Azera have the same engine.
The engine started knocking while I was driving. The car experienced sluggish performance afterwards, and hesitancy in acceleration. Hyundai has recalled other vehicles for engine knocking, but not the Azera.
I own at 2013 Hyundai Azera with a lambda engine. The same engine that’s having all sorts of issues and being recalled for many reasons on Hyundai & kia’s. It has only 79k miles on it. While driving down the highway at 75 mph the engine began to lose power and it quickly overheated. It was very terrifying as I had cars and a semi barreling behind me and my engine was seized up. I was able to throw my hazards on and make it to the shoulder safely. We towed it to my mechanic and he said the 4 rear bolts weren’t torqued/sealed properly and they were stripped and pulled right out of the block. He said this is a manufacturer defect from when the bolt was installed in the factory. Another factor was Hyundai uses an aluminum head and alum block with steel bolts. The temp variant in alum & steel is totally different so what happens is when they expand & contract at different temps like that they eventually pull out. Also, the threads in the block aren’t deep enough to begin with. I filed a claim with Hyundai and they denied my claim. My case manager jasmine called and said: 1) “what are you expecting us to do about a car that’s old, it may only have 79k miles on it, but it’s old and engines break on old cars” 2) we are the 2nd owners so the 100k powertrain warranty dropped to 60k which sadly we are just over. * was listed as a certified pre-owned when we purchased it but after calling the dealership they claim it’s not a cpo otherwise we would still be covered under the 100k pt warranty. My mechanic called Hyundai to get a replacement engine and was told they discontinued that engine so when they get them in for that reason they just sell them a junkyard motor. So I have a perfectly great car, in otherwise pristine condition, and I’m unable to find a new motor for it.
The contact owns a 2012 Hyundai Azera. The contact stated that while starting the vehicle, the vehicle made abnormal noises. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, where it was diagnosed with a lifter noise on cold startup. The vehicle was then taken to dick's hillsboro Hyundai (2871 se tualatin valley hwy, hillsboro, or 97123) however, the vehicle was not diagnosed nor repaired. Dick's hillsboro Hyundai informed the contact that authorization from the manufacturer was needed before servicing the vehicle. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and informed the contact that the noises coming from the vehicle were normal. The failure mileage was approximately 91,000.
The engine and electrical failed car over heated, start up it rattles, retraction light on, back up camera not working.
Day 1: vehicle engine began to make a knocking sound…engine light never came on. Vehicle when at higher speed would make a really loud knocking sound so it had to be driven under 50mph. Within 3 days, vehicle completely cut off in traffic and coasted into parking lot of nearby store. Had to be towed to mechanic in which they informed the engine locked up and could not be repaired. I was quoted a cost of almost $10k for a new engine. I have seen there have been other Hyundais recalled for the he same issue, but not the model I drive. The car only has 120,377 miles and I can no longer drive it. I was left stranded and could have been injured as the engine light never came on to warn of an impending issue.
While driving, the steering became suddenly loose and nearly took me off the road. I was able to get the vehicle the short distance home, but the steering wheel now feels broken and detached. There was no warning. The passenger airbag light stays on all the time. I have found that both issues and parts are actually covered in other years, but not mine, which I have confirmed with a local dealer. With only 68800 miles, these should both be fully covered manufacturer repair since they are safety-related and there are numerous similar reports. There was no "crash" or "injury" per the questions below, but there should have been, and there was not, only because I was able to regain just enough control of the car to avoid a crash. If someone else was driving, it would most certainly have been a crash with injuries, possibly involving other vehicles if I didn't happen to be close to home and the only car around at the time. Based on my experience so far, I don't think I will be owning or buying any Hyundai products any time soon and will likely sell this one if I can get it repaired. It is sitting in my garage useless right now. I have now submitted a contact request to Hyundaiusa. Com asking for them to cover these repairs, and will update with their response.
Without warning, my car lost power as I was driving on the interstate. I started changing lanes to get over to the shoulder, and before I got to the shoulder smoke began to come out of the hood then flames started. I was able to pull over and get myself and my special needs son out of the car with the help of others who saw the flames and also pulled over. 911 was called and police and fire came. The firefighters put out my engine fire with their chemical suppressants. My car does not have an active recall on it, but other makes and models with this same engine do, so I never receivedany warming about this problem happening with my same engine. I have always had it serviced at the dealership. This was very traumatic.

2008 Hyundai Azera. Consumer writes seeking reimbursement for repairs made related to safety recall 14v-415.
My wife was driving down the road when the car started smoking. When she pulled over she grabbed a bag and as she was getting out her flames were coming under her dash. Total loss.
Engine failed; started knocking , lights came on dash, and caused car to cease. Car is available for inspection, luckily was able to get on side of road without incident; towed to dealership and they advised that the Hyundai has issues and they have about 10 on the lot now awaiting replacement for there is a recall on this year of the sonata and the santa fe - it should be noted the santa fe and Azera have the same engine. Contacted dealer after towed and they told us what the likely issue is without looking at it (although later confirmed) for they have so many with the same issue. There were no warning lights or anything, dashboard suddenly came on and vehicle died. Dealership (jim johnson, bowling green, ky) service woman, megan, said this is quite normal and there was a lawsuit about this.
The engine failed in this vehicle as I was driving down the road. It immediately started knocking violently without warning. I was left stranded with my 4 children and had to pay for towing. The problem still persists upon starting. The vehicle had been inspected numerous times prior to incident due to a ticking noise upon cranking and I was informed by dealer that this is normal. Upon incident there was no warning lights or inclination that this was going to happen. I have since been told by multiple mechanics that the crank rod is faulty in this 3. 3l Hyundai engine and that in order to replace it you must buy a refurbished engine with an aftermarket part due to the faulty manufacturer part.
At 12:50 am on 2/17/2019 when the car was pulled over on the w. Bound 72nd st exit ramp of I-80 in omaha, ne the engine started on fire. The car was pulled over because it was chugging on the interstate highway and ramp. The weather was snowing and there were police on duty due to other resons so the police saw the fire, called the fire dep't and had the car taken to the pollice impound lot. My insurance CO. Inspected the car and declared the car a total loss. The VIN was checked afterwards and this car has a history of electrical engine shorts causing fires and I was not notified.
Seat: in August 2019, while my son was driving my car with both hands on the steering wheel and me in the front passenger seat on a city street the driver seat back started to fold forward to the point my son was screaming and scared not knowing what was happening he had to make an abrupt exit off the road into a parking lot we were passing. Once safely parked he pulled the latch on the side that controls the seat back and made the seat go back into place. Now as of may 2020, the seat will only go backwards and is stuck in that position and will not go forward at all. Suspension: I have had this car since the beginning of April 2014, I have had the suspension done I know at a minimum of 5 times to date, the last being 7/2/2020 and currently being told it needs to be fixed again!!!!!! this is ridiculous!!! engine: the check engine alert comes on every time I cut the car on for the last 2 years or so. Each time it was taken to the mechanic and the error code came up the same so I paid to get the issue fixed to no avail. The check engine alert continues to come on and I was told it is a sensor malfunction. Air bag icon: this has been on for the past year and I was told yet again that it is a sensor malfunction.
Tl- the contact owns a 2008 Hyundai. The contact stated that while driving approximately 50 mph flames were present coming from the rear of the vehicle. After stopping at the local gas station a citizen used a fire extinguisher to extinguish flames coming from the engine compartment. The fire department was called to the scene and a fire report was taken. The cause of the failure was not determined and the vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer and local dealer gettel Hyundai (3500 bee ridge rd. Sarasota FL. ) were both notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 97,000. Jft.
The vehicle was parked in our driveway and had not been driven for about 12 hours. We were told by the fire department that the engine smoldered for hours and broke through the fire barrier into the car and ignited the inside.

The contact owns a 2008 Hyundai Azera. The contact stated while driving 55 mph, the battery charging warning light illuminated. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic, where it was diagnosed that the valve cover gasket was leaking onto the alternator, causing the alternator to fail. The mechanic replaced the valve cover gasket, the battery, and the alternator; however, the failure recurred. The vehicle was repaired for a second time; however, the failure persisted. The vehicle was taken back to an independent mechanic. The vehicle was not repaired. The contact stated that the failure recurred every 3 years. The contact related the failure to TSB number: 21-01-047h-1. The dealer and the manufacturer were notified of the failure, but no assistance was provided. The failure mileage was approximately 99,000.
Fire in engine compartment while car was parked & off. Key was not in ignition. Car sat unused for approx. 48 hours prior to fire.
