Steering Failed Problems of Hyundai Azera

Sounds like a steering coupling failure. I was driving, and when turning the wheel it made a clicking sound and the wheels don't turn. My car only has 33,364 miles on it and this part has failed.

When I drove my wife's car yesterday, I noticed with the engine running that when you turn the steering wheel left or right, it clunked both times. This happened either stopped or when you were driving. This was not just annoying but also frightening and I am concerned that there is an issue with the steering failing. Online research has indicated that this is not an unusual problem with both Hyundai and kia vehicles.

The flexible steering coupling failed in our 2012 Azera after 67,000 miles driven. Steering wheel would make a clunking sound and wouldn't be as responsive as normal. Learned this was the same exact part that also failed in the Hyundai sonata and elantra; which had recalls to fix the issue. Due to low sales volume of the Azera, it is my speculation it didn't reach the number of complaints to get attention. However, the part and the part failure is the same.

Steering wheel knocks loudly when turning left or right. Hyundai has issued a recall for sonota, elantra, santa fe and some kia models, but does not include the Azera model even though the dealer verified it is the same issue and part failure. Many complaints online concerning the same problem and sudden loss of steering when part fails. Dealer states Azera is not included because limited production caused less complaints so it was not included in the recall. Repair estimate is $448. 00. If not repaired, complete loss of steering could occur.

A steering failure occurred at about 50 mph while entering a gentle curve to the left. It caused the car to veer to the left. At that point the driver input to steering and brakes were overridden by the esc system. Esc sent car straight ahead but we were on a curve. Why not? this is, however, a deadly type of failure because the car sends you wherever it wants to go and you cannot do anything about it. We could have been sent into oncoming traffic or over the side of a cliff. As the car finally slowed, the esc system eventually shut itself off and we could, once again, steer the car. But, this was way too late to prevent the damage. The car did not fail in a fail-safe manner. This event was triggered by a sudden mechanical failure in the steering system as evidenced by very badly misaligned front wheels and steering angle errors in the computer system. Tires do not show unusual wear from the misalignment because it happened suddenly at the time of the incident. A Hyundai field service engineer inspected the car. Hyundai will not tell us what failed so we do not know root cause. In fact, Hyundai denies there was a steering failure. Car is not safe to drive.
