1 Car Accelerates On Its Own problem of the 2016 Hyundai Elantra

Failure Date: 12/14/2019

This has happened numerus times, whether on highway's or city streets. Driving the car you will feel it lurch forward accelerating suddenly and then return to normal driving. The rpms will be at 4000 to 5000 each time. The other day on the way home from a family christmas party with my 2 girls and husband, I had the cruse control set. It suddenly revved up to 4000 rpms on a curved hilly road. This happened at 1am. No other cars where around. My then 16 year old daughter was driving the car to get her drivers license it did it with the instructor in the car. The instructor has her stop and get another car for the test. She said that this was a safety issue with the car and could not continue the test. We had only had the car at that time for 6 months. We purchased the car new with only 6 miles on it. I am now seeing all the complaints on this issue with this car and several other of Hyundai car makes and modules on the internet. Just search Hyundai cars surging while driving and you can see for your self. They must be waiting on a fatality before they make a recall.

2 Car Accelerates On Its Own problem of the 2012 Hyundai Elantra

Failure Date: 12/13/2019

I was slowly going into my parking spot and the car suddenly accelerated and lurched forward. I tried to brake, didn't seem to do any good. It hit concrete protecting a street light and was smashed up and stopped. It was terrifying. I the car did this on it's own. I know where my feet were and I was in good shoes. I'm a classically trained professional ballet dancer and I know where my feet are in space and what they are doing. I did not accelerate, the car did it on its own like that amos episode in doctor who. It was terrifying, this car should be looked into. It happened two other times, but it did it and then stopped. This time it stopped when it hit the object. The cars I had before never did this. There is a problem with this car and I was lucky I was in a safe place.

3 Car Accelerates On Its Own problem of the 2013 Hyundai Elantra

Failure Date: 11/07/2019

Suddenly my car developed a new issue of sudden acceleration while stopped/idle. While my foot is on gas, the car will suddenly jerk forward/rpm increase. However, so far while my foot is on the brake, I haven't moved as far as I can tell but fearful it might happen while driving or it will drive forward even with foot on brake.

4 Car Accelerates On Its Own problem of the 2016 Hyundai Elantra

Failure Date: 03/16/2019

On more than one occasion when accelerating from a stopped position, the car will lurch forward when pressing the gas, but not equal to the depression of the accelerator pedal. I bought this car 8 months ago and it has happened many times. One incident I believe when this happened caused me to damage personal property. Inwas stopped behind a car waiting to get to a gate key pad. When I started to pull forward the car suddenly accelerated and I hit the key pad, ran over it! this sudden acceleration is not typically a hazard when on the open road, obviously this was an issue with a solid object in front of me.

5 Car Accelerates On Its Own problem of the 2013 Hyundai Elantra

Failure Date: 04/22/2018

I was pulling into a parking space on a Sunday afternoon at a business park. It was mid day and dry. I was slowing down and half way into the space when the car suddenly accelerated. It seemed like the car went out of my control. The car was stopped by a 3 shrub or else I would have crashed into the building. In the process, a car parked beside me was also damaged.

6 Car Accelerates On Its Own problem of the 2017 Hyundai Elantra

Failure Date: 05/23/2017

This vehicle accelerates more than expected (lunges) when I put it in drive and release the brake without even having my foot on accelerator. On flat surface it begins to move ahead spontaneously without my foot on gas peddle. I brought to dealer and they said this is typical for Elantra and not a know issue. It has been mentioned by other driver's on reddit. The only solution is to have one foot on the brake and the other on accelerator to protect from sudden acceleration. There must be a software/hardware solution. Creates risky situation because one could inadvertently hit pedestrian, car in front at stop, roll into traffic, etc. Worst case would be if someone unfamiliar with vehicle drives it, ie, rental car or friend. I put in the date I had it checked by Hyundai service. They said it might need to "break in" and tighten up as parts wears" as hopeful comments for resolution.

7 Car Accelerates On Its Own problem of the 2010 Hyundai Elantra

Failure Date: 05/17/2017

As the brakes were applied when slowly (<10 miles/hr) turning into a parking place in a parking lot of a strip mall perpendicular to the side walks (double sidewalk separated by a railing) in front of the stores, the car suddenly accelerated thru the parking space and up on the first sidewalk (it did not respond to the brake pedal pressure to slow) and knocked down the railing separating the first and second side walks. The driver pulled up on the handbrake to stop the car before it crossed the second side walk and crashed into the barbershop thus preventing further damage and no injury.

8 Car Accelerates On Its Own problem of the 2014 Hyundai Elantra

Failure Date: 08/26/2016

08-26-16 while pulling into a parking space at a public park while doing less than 5 miles per hour, I experienced rapid unintended acceleration, plowed through a fence, sideswiped a tree, went off a grassy median back up onto a grassy median and then bounced off of that before the car finally came to rest. My brakes did not work and I had no control over the vehicle. It is a miracle that I am not dead as the park is on a very busy 4 lane road and is usually full of children.

16 Car Accelerates On Its Own problem of the 2006 Hyundai Elantra

Failure Date: 06/30/2014

On this date I experienced the 4th of 5 incidences of unintended acceleration in the 8 years I have owned this car. I was driving in daytona beach approaching a red traffic signal. There was a car stopped in front of me. When I applied the brakes, the car lurched forward and the acceleration revved the engine. I had to turn off the key to stop the car in heavy traffic. I pulled off the road and removed the floor mat as had been suggested by the service technician the last time I had taken it in for this issue. I drove it home safely, but the next morning in a grocery store parking lot when I applied brakes to stop, again the car lurched forward almost hitting a BMW. I again drove it home safely, parked it and called the dealership. I made arrangement to take it in on July 7th to have it looked at again. Out of fear for the safety of myself and others I had the car towed to the dealer. They kept it for 2 days, drove it 240 miles and once again could find no issue. The car is parked in my driveway out of fear of killing someone or damaging property. When I told them I had found multiple instances of this happening with Hyundais online, they claimed to have no knowledge of such a thing. One article stated that the manufacturer fixed this problem in 2012. While I cannot afford to purchase a new car, I am afraid to drive this one, and would not want to sell it to anyone else because of the safety issues I have experienced.

17 Car Accelerates On Its Own problem of the 2010 Hyundai Elantra

Failure Date: 04/01/2014

April 1st 2014 at aprox. 9:15am while preforming an emergency acceleration in a 2010 Hyundai Elantra se with aprox. 103000 miles car became stuck accelerating and continued to do once foot was lifted from both petals. Breaks were effective at slowing vehicle but engine continued to accelerate at full throttle. Tapping accelerator was tried and was ineffective. Car was shifted by operator into neutral and red-lined on rpm. Operator slammed accelerator peddle to floor again and unintended acceleration stopped and car returned to normal function. No cruse control was being used, no hazard warning symbols came on. Car was shifted back to drive and no accident or injury occurred. Car accelerated to aprox 70mph under these conditions. Car was brought to a Hyundai dealer for service a few hrs later who noted and showed customer how oem floor mats when properly installed can pop up and trap accelerator peddle down if accelerator peddle is forced to floor rapidly. Dealer was able to duplicate issue and removed floor mat from mounting on floor and left loose in driver's foot area. Customer put floor mat in back seat to avoid issues.

Later in 10/2013, we were slowing down as we approached a stop sign the car unintentionally accelerated and jumped forward. 7. In 11/2013, we experienced a similar event as in #6 while approaching a stop sign. 8. Later in 11/2013, we were backing out of garage when the car unintentionally accelerated and jumped forward. 9. Again in 11/2013 we were accelerating as we were entering the interstate when the car accelerated very rapidly even after removing the driver's foot from the gas pedal. 20 Car Accelerates On Its Own problem of the 2011 Hyundai Elantra

Failure Date: 07/10/2013

Driving home from work on narrow 2 lane road. ,my car suddenly accelerated and shot across the opposite side of oncoming lane. . Thankfully no car was coming toward me. At the time. I managed to get it under control, but was terrified thinking what if a car had been coming up toward me. This happened sometime in summer of 2013. I thought maybe it was just a fluke until today when I was reading about Chrysler autos having sudden acceleration problems. I decided to check to see if any Hyundai cars had the same problem. I was surprised to see that indeed there had been a case reported. Now, I am very uneasy driving my car, and especially since my 19 yr old also drives it. I have not seen any recall to have this issue fixed. I have also email the Hyundai corp. To inform them also of my experience. I certainly do not want to die or have any one else killed because of this. Would like to see Hyundai recall these cars to fix the problem.

21 Car Accelerates On Its Own problem of the 2013 Hyundai Elantra

Failure Date: 05/18/2013

Vehicle sudden acceleration after pressing brakes and trying to park: as I was turning into a parking space (less than 5 mph), in front of a grocery store to park the car, the vehicle suddenly accelerated, hit a lighting pole and completely damaged the front of the car. Pressing the brakes even harder could not stop the car. The car finally came to a halt as it hit the pole (thankfully no one was injured). The air bag did not come on, my head and neck hit the brakes. Thankfully, I was not injured and no one else was either. Brakes completely failed, the manufacturer was made aware of it but could not find anything defective in the car. This is very scary.

22 Car Accelerates On Its Own problem of the 2005 Hyundai Elantra

Failure Date: 05/15/2013

Very sporadic (6-8 times over six months) continued acceleration at 2500+ rpm when foot is removed from accelerator pedal. No codes ever set; no information provided by engine history. Test drive by a trusted mechanic and a service rep from local Hyundai dealer (most recent test drive 10/30/2013) could not reproduce the defect. Test drive by me with the same service rep same day nearly resulted in severe crash. Turning right out of dealership onto MD 198 and accelerating up to 3300 rpm toward changing traffic signal, vehicle failed to slow when foot removed from pedal. Brake applied with great effort and virtually no response. Steered into right turn in front of cross traffic from left and shifted to neutral to regain control of brakes on right shoulder. Engine raced in excess of 6000 rpm with no load for 1-2 seconds until I tapped the accelerator pedal twice. Engine returned to idle speed. This uncontrolled acceleration happened twice more before we got back to the dealership. This is an extremely hazardous condition and warrants a full investigation. The vehicle is currently at the ourisman Hyundai dealership on fort meade road, laurel, MD.
