14 Gasoline Fuel System problem of the 2003 Hyundai Elantra

Failure Date: 08/18/2011

During hot weather, above 100 degrees and after several hours of driving, my Elantra will feel like someone is pumping the gas peddle. It is hard to maintain a steady speed. It is hard to get to dealer with problem present, because if car is turned off problem goes away. Took to dealer and they replaced spark plugs and wires, problem still there. Parts not available. When this problem happens and the car is pulled into garage, a very strong smell of gas is present. My fear is that the car will catch fire or explode. I have contacted Hyundai, but they appear not to care.

15 Gasoline Fuel System problem of the 2008 Hyundai Elantra

Failure Date: 07/29/2011

The car stalled 6/21/11 at 7pm on the freeway in 10-20 mile an hour stop and go traffic. The temp outside was mild, I had been on the road for 20 min before hitting traffic, and both air conditioning and radio were on. I was in traffic approx. 10 min. I went to tap the gas peddle and nothing was there. I had to get out (on freeway) and push the car off the road and onto center divide (no call boxes). Two strangers stopped and helped me to side of road. After 5 minutes I was able to start car and drive home. The car stalled again on 7/29/11 in 10-20 mph stop and go traffic at 5pm. The temp was mild and I had just filled the car with gas. 15 minutes later on the freeway (stop and go traffic), with air conditioner and radio on, I went to tap the gas peddle and nothing was there. Was in traffic less than 10 min. Again stuck in the middle of the freeway. This time I did not get out of the car but was attempting to call for help when chp pulled up behind me and used his car to push me off the road. I put car in neutral, chp pushed me off through entire lane of freeway traffic into center divide. The brake would not work. I had my foot to the floor but car was not stopping. The emergency brake was the only thing that kept me from rolling into siderail. While we waited for tow truck, I attempted to start car and it started. Chp escorted me off freeway and I drove home 5 min. Away.

18 Gasoline Fuel System problem of the 2006 Hyundai Elantra

Failure Date: 01/18/2010

On my 2006 Hyundai Elantra GLS 4cyl engine there is a issue which I have brought up 3 times now to Hyundai & all they keep doing is resetting the computer & trans retrain reset. The issue I am having is at a steady speed off 25-30 miles hour I get a very bad bucking & jerking effect the loss of power shortly after the bucking & jerking happens that the car looses power some much so it doesn't want to move fast enough to keep up on the highway when coming off a off ramp merging into the highway traffic two times the last time was today this all happened again & I couldn't get the car to move fast enough to flow with the regular traffic that I almost got hit by a 18 wheeler truck today. This problem is making the car not safe to drive & I am afraid if I continue to drive it like Hyundai wants me to do in this condition to try to bring the check engine light on to see what the problem is I might get hit by someone & possible killed. This issue is a serious operating condition that warrants someone doing something about this problem & this is a common issue from other Hyundai Elantra owners of the same year or newer I have read online & Hyundai hasn't addressed it well enough or come up with a fix as of yet. Telling a customer to keep driving the car in this condition is not safe just some the mechanics can get a check engine light on with a code to go on. This car almost always feels like it is going to loss total engine power & just cut out on me while I am driving somewhere & I will get hit.

19 Gasoline Fuel System problem of the 2005 Hyundai Elantra

Failure Date: 12/10/2009

On 12/10/2009 I had taken my auto in for service at the local Hyundai dealer. I told them we were having a problem with a funny smell coming out of the dash when the car is started and it continues (the odor) while the vehicle is running. The odor is not there while vehicle is not started or running? they performed the new york state safety and emissions inspection and the vehicle passed. They then went on to explain that the odor that is coming out of the vent is a normal condition from converter and fuel winter blend ? I have owned this vehicle since day one and have never had this problem before? this is my fifth winter. I also have 2 other vehicles and we buy our gas at the same station and I am not having this problem with either one. I was told there is a service bulletin on this issue? but when I asked for a copy I was told he couldn't find it ,and when I went online I couldn't either. I don't know if you can help with this issue or not but if there is anything you can do or point me in the right direction I would appreciate it because as far as the dealer is concerned this is normal and I don't see what's normal about it . Thank you for your time.

24 Gasoline Fuel System problem of the 2008 Hyundai Elantra

Failure Date: 08/05/2008

My 2008 Elantra se which I bought in may has had two "episodes" of stalling. The first (od 1100 mi) on July 14 occurred on the freeway and began as a slight hesitation that got progressively worse such that we took the next exit and limped home on back roads. The check engine light came on and the car stalled twice before we finally made it home. The next day I was able to drive it to the dealer about 5 miles away. Their diagnosis was a bad oxygen sensor which they didn't have in stock. They said it would be ok to drive the car until the new sensor arrived. It ran fine and 3 days later I took it in to have the sensor replaced. They ran diagnostics again and said the sensor was ok and needn't be replaced. They said maybe it was bad gas or vapor lock and sent me on my way. The car ran fine until this afternoon (Aug 5) when it began hesitating (od 1432 mi) on the freeway and once again I took the first exit and limped home, unable to exceed 25 mph, bucking all the way. My wife followed me to the dealer and for the last mile were unable to go over 5 mph (emergency flashers on). We never made it as the Elantra shut down completely in rush hour traffic and I had to get out and push into a nearby parking lot. I called Hyundai roadside assistance and had the car trucked to the dealer, only about 4 blocks away. I understand NHTSA is investigating 07-08 Elantra stalling complaints and wanted to add another data point for your consideration.

The engine would die and not restart while the vehicle was in motion. The vehicle would then be coasting down the road with no power brakes or steering. This made controlling and stopping the vehicle very difficult and dangerous. Numerous visits to the Hyundai dealership, thousands of dollars, and many replaced parts later, the Hyundai dealership finally determined that an apparent defect to the charcoal canister assembly and canister close valve in the fuel system were causing the issue.

I have a 5-speed gt hatchback that stalled while stopped at a stop sign in July of 2005. The car would run erratically and try to stall while moving. It seemed to do it when the cooling fan came on. Took to dealer 8/1/05. They could not duplicate the problem. They did replace the throttle position sensor. I had 417 miles on it at that time. I had no problems until 3/30/06. The first warm day in PA and the car started stalling again, and leaking fuel in the left rear wheel well. With only 6900 miles. I have a service appointment 4/3/06. Let's hope I can get this fixed this time before something bad happens. It seems to only stall when warmed up and the outside temp is above 65 degrees.

34 Gasoline Fuel System problem of the 2001 Hyundai Elantra

Failure Date: 06/15/2003

It is back at earnhardts, for the elec. System again 4th time. It started in 3/02 and went out again last fri. 6/6/03 but they don't consider it a problem. Because I filed a lemon law on the previous accent and replaced it with the Elantra 2001 and I filled out a survey saying they had bad customer service, the normal use of a rental while they fixed it for days was not granted. I am so upset I spent a day out in the az sun waiting for a tow of 205 miles to the next dealership and they tell me I have a bad record with them and don't deserve the courtesy of a rental car. This is my second hyndai and I have had nothing but trouble with it and the dealership. I have sent letters to the attorney general, three on my side, hyndai and earnhardts dealership. I want out of this car and don't feel safe in it any more. I was going down the salt river canyon (if you are not from az picture going down the twisting road to the grand canyon) without any power steering, brakes and trying to keep control of the car with kids in it. And they tell me I shouldn't be excited! 1 1/2 hrs in the sun waiting for the tow, the next dealership 200 mi away, no rental cars authorized, so my husband has to drive up and get me (198) miles from my house and go back so he could be at work in 3 hrs. No sleep for him. The dates are 3, 4, 6 of 2002 and now 6/6/03. The mileage is 27,694. The cost is theirs because it has the 100,000 warranty. Just the mental and physical anguish and inconvience of another car that won't work right now.
