1 Brake Master Cylinder problem of the 2015 Hyundai Genesis

Failure Date: 05/01/2023

There are multiple problem points with this vehicle that become apparent far earlier than they should including but not limited to 1: starter motor complete failure at 70k miles (affects every single 3. 8 2015-2017 Genesis sedan) 2: sunroof front panel seal degradation 3: shuddering driveshaft early into new ownership (also afflicts most of these vehicles) 4: brake booster and master cylinder sudden complete failure 5: oil pressure sensor improper calibration all of these issues have been checked by multiple service centers at Hyundai/genesis dealers, all of them confirming reluctantly that these issues affect all Genesis models similar to mine. The braking issue is the worst, happens suddenly and at a random point in time, and costs thousands to fix. The starter motor failure is very common, and every dealer kept forcing me to replace meaningless parts until the car would no longer start and then they admitted it needed a new starter. The front panel between the sunroof and the windshield has rapidly degrading rubber seals, which will loudly shake and move around while driving. The driveshaft will shudder when the vehicle is cold and it’s sub 80° outside, even if the engine has warmed to operating temp. The oil pressure sensor rapidly breaks just months after the car is brand new, with it on average reading a much lower oil pressure than is actually being applied. All of these issues have been replicated, and only the faulty oil pressure sensor had a warning light, no light for the faulty brakes, starter, or driveshaft issues. The more I research into Genesis, the more I realize that these issues happen just a couple thousand miles after new, and affect every single Genesis model similar to mine.

4 Brake Master Cylinder problem of the 2012 Hyundai Genesis

Failure Date: 10/23/2019

On October 23rd, 2019, the brakes on my 2012 Hyundai Genesis r-spec sedan suddenly failed with the brake pedal going all the way to the floor before the vehicle eventually stopped luckily avoiding an accident. I was driving on the highway. The vehicle has 79k miles. I then took the car to the Hyundai dealer in st. Louis park, mn and they determined that the brake master cylinder was faulty and replaced. The diagnosis and repair did not fix the issue as the brake pedal was still spongy and going to the floor intermittently. I will be taking the car back to the dealer to have them fix it correctly. While researching the issue, I have found that multiple other owners of the same car have experienced this issue and the dealer had to replace the abs hydraulic electronic control unit (hecu) as it contained corrosion within the unit due to bad design which causes hydraulic braking failure to occur at any time. This campaign/recall below outlines the issue which I am going to present to the dealer to fix correctly as I am still under warranty. To me, this is a life or death type failure and could result in injuries. Hyundai should be responsible for replacing all abs hecu before lives are lost for all 2009-2012 Hyundai Genesis, not just some vins that they deemed troublesome. They should take responsibility for all cars and immediately contact their owners. Hyundai recall - campaign 12-01-052 TSB: bh Genesis sedan hecu inspection and brake fluid replacement (recall 114) original recall from the NHTSA manufacturer's report date October 29, 2013 NHTSA action number pe13033 potential number of units affected 43,500.

5 Brake Master Cylinder problem of the 2011 Hyundai Genesis

Failure Date: 04/27/2019

My father is currently looking after my vehicle and while he was doing routine checks when went to depress the brake petal it sank all the way to the floor. He later took it to a mechanic who then bleed the system a few times only to find out that the front right brake and rear left brake are operating as normal. As it would turn out, however, Hyundai issued a recall for this but only for the Genesis sedans and not the coupes. Hyundai recall #114 and NHTSA recall #13v489000 state the brake fluid the manufacture uses does not protect the h. E. C. U. Or hydraulic electronic control unit (a. K. A. Abs control unit) against internal corrosion. So the internal valves will corroded and prevent the brakes from operating properly. In my 2011 Genesis coupe this is currently the issue. Other coupe owners are having similar issues where they can't stop the car proper and/or the brake petal sinks to the floor at random times while driving slow or at highway speeds and the brake don't operate properly or at all! the manufacture seems to be aware of the issue but won't do anything about it. Replacing the master cylinder and completely bleeding the system doesn't have any affect for the issue. To replace the unit, I'm looking at roughly $3,200 of my own money to replace the h. E. C. U due to defective brake fluid that has corroded the internals. The car has barely been driven with less about 30k miles on it. This a grave safety concern and Hyundai needs to address the issues for not just the sedans but the coupes as well! if I or the driver of my car needed to make an emergency stop there is no telling if the brakes would operate in that moment as they should. Injury or death could occur for not just the driver but other casualties that could be prevented if Hyundai fixes this issue for all Hyundai Genesis coupes. Brake operation is vastly important in all vehicles. This problem is serious.

6 Brake Master Cylinder problem of the 2009 Hyundai Genesis

Failure Date: 02/22/2019

Brakes are a continuing problem or better said bad brakes, like sometimes going to the floorboard. The esc dash light is on and the cruise control doesn't work either. I had completed a recall on the brake fluid, but shortly after that my my petal went to the floor. Being concerned, I replaced the master cylinder, brake rotors, brake lines and pads. Upon bleeding the system, the dealers new brake fluid came out with sludge floating on top of clear fluid. I contacted the dealers general mgr. And complained of a bad drain repair. He asked me to bring my car in and they'll check it again. I showed him the pictures and they denied that it came from my car, but they would fix my car's brakes for $2700. 00 with no guarantee that it wouldn't cost more. This was tom ah dealer ship in lima, ohio. I feel that Hyundai should be held responsible for these brake problems. I have the fluid saved and pictures also. Upon checking the internet, I have been advised that the esc and cruise control is wired to the abs system. I was on interstate 75 and the car just started applying the brakes by themselves. A ratcheting on off effect. I slowed the car down and pulled the car over to the side. I was within sight of my turnoff state rte 274 OH, so I continued on. I went to stop and my petal went to the floor. I was going slow, made my turn and stopped. I got under the hood just to see if something visual was there. I was within 7 miles of my home a straight line, so I went for it. I pressed on the gas and my left front wheel was locked up. I backed up and went forward again, shutting off the car & restarting it. Brake was released, but petal still went to the floor. I drove home 20 mph, had car towed to dealer for repair. Don't know what they did, but charged $677. 00. A couple days later, my petal went to the floor again. Thats when I did the repairs noted above. Still have problems.

The failure mileage was approximately 51,000.

8 Brake Master Cylinder problem of the 2012 Hyundai Genesis

Failure Date: 11/05/2018

Tl the contact owns a 2012 Hyundai Genesis. The contact stated that the brake pedal traveled to the floorboard when it was depressed. The failure occurred several times. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who diagnosed that there was a corrosion build up concerning the brake fluid, which affected the hydraulic electronic control unit. The mechanic replaced the brake pads and master cylinder, but the brake pedal continued to travel to the floorboard. The dealer (allen Hyundai, 624 e pass rd, gulfport, ms 39507, (228) 539-5555) was contacted. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The vehicle was not included in NHTSA action number: pe13033 (service brakes, hydraulic) and NHTSA campaign number: 13v489000 (service brakes, hydraulic), but the failures were similar. The manufacturer was notified. The approximate failure mileage was 74,380.

9 Brake Master Cylinder problem of the 2011 Hyundai Genesis

Failure Date: 10/01/2018

My 2011 Genesis sedan (4. 6l v8) has an increasingly soft, spongy brake pedal past year or so. This occurs while driving in/out of my neighborhood, on busy NJ highways, and when parked with engine running. Had rotors, pads, master cylinder and brake fluid replaced recently (~2 months ago; $1200; receipts available). Did not solve the problem. I feel unsafe driving the car and putting me/other drivers at risk. From researching the problem, including recently learning about the recall of 2009-2012 models for brake problems, I am guessing that either the brake booster and/or abs brake module are failing. I bought the car new and am its only owner. Car has only 73,000 careful miles on it. I'm reluctant to spend any more money. What can I do?.

10 Brake Master Cylinder problem of the 2011 Hyundai Genesis

Failure Date: 09/01/2018

My brake pedal is going all the way down to the floor it used to do it every once in a while but now it is a constant thing. The car does stop but it feels really mushy, I took the car to the dealership and was told that it was a master brake cylinder, however after reading online a lot off people have the same issue and replacing the master cylinder isn't the problem.

11 Brake Master Cylinder problem of the 2011 Hyundai Genesis

Failure Date: 05/23/2018

My h. E. C. U. Is failing just like the recall 13v48900 states. . My brakes have on three occasions failed which almost resulted in a serious accident. I brought this to Hyundai attention. But they tell me there's nothing they can do about it. It's on me. Now my car is up for inspection and it won't pass because of this isue. . It will cost me $500. 00 for the mechanic to replace the master cylinder just to pass inspection. . . If there's a defect in the fluid which causes corrostion, and now the master cylinder and h. E. C. U. Are not holding pressure. . The recall states this is a common problem,,why do I have to made pay for something that is a well documented defect. . If I or a member of my family get into an accident Hyundai has been made aware of issue.

15 Brake Master Cylinder problem of the 2011 Hyundai Genesis

Failure Date: 09/01/2017

After a brake job, I took the car back to say that the pedal was going to the floor. I was told I had a leak in the master cylinder. Got that repaired. After having the master cylinder repaired, I am now being told I have to replace the hydraulic electronic control unit (abs, hecu). Did some research, and saw that this was a recall issue for 48,000 Genesis between the years of 2008 and 2012. Issue seems to be caused by brake fluid corrosion. My car was not part of the recall. I reported the initial issue at 64,000 miles. Car is now at 80,000. It has been sitting at the dealership because it had an engine replaced covered under warranty.

16 Brake Master Cylinder problem of the 2010 Hyundai Genesis

Failure Date: 06/08/2017

When applying pressure to my brake petal, the car did not stop. I almost was involved in a few rear end collisons. It was very scary! dealership checked the brakes and nothing is wrong. I need to do a master cylinder change. Unfortunately, my car is no longer under warranty. Currently, it has 53,000 miles only. No recall for my vehicle.

17 Brake Master Cylinder problem of the 2011 Hyundai Genesis

Failure Date: 02/23/2017

The brake pedal on the subject car, Hyundai Genesis 2011, became too soft (mushy) when pressed down. No braking action until the pedal is within 1" from the floor. After checking with the dealer, and two other reputable auto repair shops, we had the brake master cylinder replaced at $380 at one shop but that did not fix the problem. I searched the internet and found that the dealer, in 2013, had complaints about similar brake problem on Genesis cars, made between 2008 and 2012, and the dealer found and replaced the "corrosive" brake fluid at no charge on over 27,000 cars - I am sure it is a matter of time when our car, the 2011 Genesis, will show the same problem, and should be dealt with the say way. . 18 Brake Master Cylinder problem of the 2009 Hyundai Genesis

Failure Date: 02/22/2017

My Genesis has less than 26,000 miles on it. Three days ago the brakes failed. The garage stated that it was master cylinder for the brakes. Today they called and stated that the hydraulic control unit also needs to be changed out. My wife was traveling at approximately 45 miles per hour when she attempted to slow the car down for an intersection. She was on lewis Ave. In temperance mi. The brake pedal went to the floor board. It did eventually slow the car enough and she was able to exit into a parking lot. At this point we had the car towed to a garage.

19 Brake Master Cylinder problem of the 2012 Hyundai Genesis

Failure Date: 12/30/2016

The brake pedal goes completely to the floor. Brakes act as if failing. Dealer diagnosed brake master cylinder defect, requiring replacement of the master cylinder. Mileage only 67,000 miles.

20 Brake Master Cylinder problem of the 2009 Hyundai Genesis

Failure Date: 08/09/2016

Brake pedal depresses all the way to the floor. Replaced brake master cylinder and flushed brake fluid. Brake pedal still depresses to the floor. Car has 46,000 miles on it. Abs censor is faulty. Need new module.

21 Brake Master Cylinder problem of the 2012 Hyundai Genesis

Failure Date: 07/19/2016

My wife and I have a 2012 Hyundai Genesis 3. 8 sedan. My wife is the primary driver. She came home one evening and told me that the car failed to stop and went into the intersection as she attempted to stop for a red traffic signal. I immediately drove the car down the street and observed that you had to pump the brakes to stop and the pedal went to the floor. I added some brake fluid and pumped the brakes. I drove the care the next few days and noticed that over time the same thing happened with the pedal going to the floor. I took the car to my mechanic and had all the brakes changed. That cost me over $320. 00. The mechanic advised me that the car had a faulty master cylinder. To shorten the story. Due to the dealer cost of from $275. 00 to $365. 00 for a master cylinder. I bought 2 online and 1 at oreilly auto parts. I spent $105. 00, $81, and $79. 00 for each respectively. Each time the mechanic advised me that the were not compatible. He was so conflicted by the process advised me to take the care to the dealer and told me that with only 91000 miles and a well maintained 4 year old car, it is unheard of for a master cylinder to be faulty. I contacted Hyundai and was told there was no recall nor was my vehicle covered by my factory warrantee. I am a retired auto theft officer so I decided to check with NHTSA for complaints and recalls. I am positive that this recall applies to my car. I have had the same process happen to me regarding the windshield wiper motor. Hyundai would not help so I found a motor at a junk yard. I paid to have it installed. However it only works at one speed. I would like it replaced and a refund for the cost incurred to find and replace it. I also would like the braking system repaired and compensation. Hyundai's recall number is 114. I would like to invoke the lemon law. .

22 Brake Master Cylinder problem of the 2009 Hyundai Genesis

Failure Date: 05/22/2016

The contact owns a 2009 Hyundai Genesis. While driving and attempting to stop the vehicle, the brake pedal traveled to the floorboard. The brakes had to be pumped in order to stop the vehicle. The vehicle was taken to the dealer for diagnostic testing and it was determined that the brakes were fine. The contact stated that the brake failure recurred the very next day. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where it was diagnosed that the master cylinder failed and the abs hydraulic unit needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 39,305.

23 Brake Master Cylinder problem of the 2010 Hyundai Genesis

Failure Date: 01/03/2015

When I pressed on the brake pedal, it felt mushy. Completely different from the firm braking the vehicle brakes had exhibited just a few minutes previously. I could feel the brakes trying to engage at the proper brake pedal placement but then I had to continue pressing the pedal because the brakes were not engaging. Only after I continued to apply pressure to the brake pedal toward the end of the pedal's range of motion did I finally feel the brakes begin to slow the car. After this first occurrence, since I was over 300 miles from home, I had to anticipate any braking I needed to do. I found that each time I needed to brake, if I pumped the brakes after the first initial pressing of the brake pedal, I could get the brake pedal to build up pressure so I would have close to the same braking 'feel' that I had had before this problem began. I returned home on Saturday. I did not drive the car on Sunday. On Monday, I took the Genesis to the Hyundai dealership. After almost two hours, they said they had identified the problem as the master cylinder. I had the master cylinder replaced on Tuesday. There was almost no change in the mushiness of the brake pedal. After searching the internet for possible causes I discovered Hyundai has had considerable complaints about fading and mushy brakes on their Genesis line of vehicles. It seems it all stems from the hydraulic electronic control unit module. So, with Hyundai knowing this, why did the service department of the abilene, TX dealership recommend a master cylinder replacement when, in my estimation, the first culprit should have been the abs module? I discovered this persistent issue with the Genesis vehicle on Wednesday, I have an appointment with the abilene TX Hyundai dealership on Thursday. I'll see how they respond.

24 Brake Master Cylinder problem of the 2009 Hyundai Genesis

Failure Date: 12/01/2014

The brake pedal, when applied, traveled well beyond the normal point of stopping, almost to the floor. Braking effectiveness and results were greatly diminished and the pedal was extremely "spongy"/not firm as normal. In an emergency stopping situation, the car simply could not have stopped in time to avoid collision. This was not an intermittent occurrence. Once the symptom manifested itself, it has done do consistently. The car has been delivered to the humble TX Hyundai dealership which has identified the hecu component as the problem, and not the master cylinder. Unfortunately the service writer has not recognized the recall action required for this component.

25 Brake Master Cylinder problem of the 2010 Hyundai Genesis

Failure Date: 07/22/2014

Brakes failed - so master cylinder was replaced by dealer but brakes are still a bit spongy. Abs is not working quite right. Brake fluid had already been replaced 6 months earlier under recall, but brake control unit was not replaced. I am concerned that control unit should have been replaced and by other reports it seems Hyundai is very reluctant to pay for that. Car is still under warranty.

26 Brake Master Cylinder problem of the 2009 Hyundai Genesis

Failure Date: 01/14/2014

Brake pedal went to floor. Very difficult to stop vehicle. This is an intermittent problem and does not happen all the time. Typically has occurred once or twice per month. This continues even after having the master cylinder replaced and filling a complaint with the NHTSA. Hyundai checked the hecu module under their recall campaign #114 and states the hecu is within specs. However, since this is an intermittent issue they cannot diagnosis the problem until it fails. Cannot drive vehicle as we cannot predict next time this failure will occur.

27 Brake Master Cylinder problem of the 2009 Hyundai Genesis

Failure Date: 11/08/2013

Brought my car in to address a recall on the brakes. 10 days after they flushed my brake fluid I noticed I had to push down hard on the brake pedal for the car to stop. I brought the car in and they said the master cylinder needs to be replaced at my cost. I have two young children and I'm extremely concerned about the safety of this vehicle.

28 Brake Master Cylinder problem of the 2009 Hyundai Genesis

Failure Date: 10/23/2013

In October while the car was at the dealer for service they asked me wait a few more minutes and explained they were replacing the brake fluid. Within a month of that service I started noticing a soft peddle which turned to a to the floor pedal on occasions. Finally in late Dec 13 it got very bad and the brakes were unresponsive and took a great deal of pressure to activate from time to time. I brought the car to the dealer today under a new recall I just received regarding brake fluid replacement. They replaced the fluid and bled the system, they said they were not satisfied with the result and continued to look for another issue. They found the mast cylinder was leaking. The tech took me on the side and said the fluid that was in there attracted metal shavings that probably caused the master cylinder seal to fail. They would not let me drive the car home and gave me a loaner.

29 Brake Master Cylinder problem of the 2009 Hyundai Genesis

Failure Date: 10/20/2013

My wife normally drives the car ,but over this past weekend I drover her vehicle. I noticed that everytime I came to a stop and kept my foot on the brake pedal ,it would slowly go to the floor. After experiencing again. On Sunday 10/20/2013, I pulled off the road and checked the brake fluid in the master cylinder, it was full. Having worked in manufacturing , more specifically in the manufacturing of abs automatic braking systems, there are software issues that surface periodically. Unfortunately, they are not handled as quickly, by the car manufacturer ( they design the software), as one would hope.

30 Brake Master Cylinder problem of the 2009 Hyundai Genesis

Failure Date: 09/19/2013

The contact owns a 2009 Hyundai Genesis. The contact was driving 45 mph when the brakes were applied to stop the vehicle. The brakes failed and the parking brake was used. The vehicle was merged off the roadway and was towed to an independent mechanic. The master cylinder and calipers were replaced, but the issue was not corrected. The vehicle was not further repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the incident. The approximate failure mileage was 83000.

31 Brake Master Cylinder problem of the 2009 Hyundai Genesis

Failure Date: 09/02/2013

Problem: upon stepping on brakes, reduced brake pressure, longer pedal travel- feeling like possible master cylinder failure, but brakes continued to work. Nov. 15, 2013 received Hyundai safety recall notice 13v-113: replace stop lamp switch and flush/refill break fluid. Dealer completed service Nov 30. Dealer said master cylinder needed to be replaced. Service performed Dec. 5. Dealer then said hydraulic electronic control unit needed replacement. I feel the brake problems are due to the faulty break fluid that was installed by the manufacturer and repairs need to be done at the manufactures expense.

32 Brake Master Cylinder problem of the 2009 Hyundai Genesis

Failure Date: 09/02/2013

Problem: upon applying brakes, reduced brake pressure & longer pedal travel, feeling like master cylinder problem- although brakes continued to work with greater effort. Nov. 2013 received Hyundai safety recall notice 13v-113: replace stop lamp switch and flush/refill brake fluid. Dealer completed service noc 30, 2013. Dealer said that master cylinder needed replacement. Service performed Dec. 5, 2013. Dealer then said hydraulic electronic control unit needed replacement. (parts ordered. ) I feel that my brake problems were caused by the manufacturer installing inadequate/faulty brake fluid. The repairs need to be done at the manufacturer's expense.

33 Brake Master Cylinder problem of the 2009 Hyundai Genesis

Failure Date: 08/08/2013

Without warning, the brake pedal traveled almost to the floor of the car before stopping the vehicle. The first occasion happened on August 7, 2013, but the problem corrected itself and the brakes seemed fine until October 20, 2013, when my husband and I were vacationing in the mountains of north carolina, approximately 5 hours from our home. Again, without any warning, the brake pedal went almost to the floor before stopping the vehicle. We made it home safely, but the brake failure was a major safety concern. After seeing information online about a recall of the Genesis related to the brakes, we took the vehicle to the Hyundai dealership in goldsboro, nc, on October 23, and they replaced the brake fluid, which failed to correct the problem with the brakes. They told us the master cylinder needed to be replaced. Based on the history of the problem, we did not agree with that diagnosis and, on October 24, took the Genesis to johnson Hyundai in raleigh, nc, where they determined the problem was caused by a failure of the hydraulic module for the anti-lock brake system. The Hyundai company told us they are currently investigating this very same problem with the 2009 Genesis but the investigation is not far enough along to determine if a recall will be made. Further, that we should have the repairs done (over $2100) and if a recall is made, we would be reimbursed. Johnson Hyundai is trying to help us find a resolution to this issue. The vehicle is only four years old and about 10,000 miles out of warranty; $2100 in a repair bill is a lot of money for us to pay for a brake problem of which Hyundai is already aware. . . . Updated 11-12-13 johnson Hyundai and Hyundai corporation replaced the defective abs module at no charge. Updated 11/19/13.

34 Brake Master Cylinder problem of the 2009 Hyundai Genesis

Failure Date: 06/29/2013

Had to brake hard to avoid debris on hwy exit. Following that the brake pedal began to intermittently fade noticeably. Within 2 weeks it became a chronic issue. Had the brake fluid flushed and replace. No better, had brakes replaced, no better, had the master cylinder and booster replaced, and again no better. I have spent several hundred to resolve this problem. Recently read an on-line forum where many Genesis owners are reporting similar problems with similar problems narrowing it down. The consensus appears to be that the abs controller is faulty and at a cost of almost $3000 to repair. This is totally unsatisfactory! it isn't just the outrageous cost, but a safety item should not fail as frequently as they appear to be and not on a car that is still relatively "new".

35 Brake Master Cylinder problem of the 2009 Hyundai Genesis

Failure Date: 03/01/2013

Without any prior incidents or probable causes, the brakes suddenly went "soft", as in the pedal went to the floor and the brakes were practically ineffective. This has happened intermittently since, and from research done online, this appears to be a problem with the abs brake module, yet Hyundai dealers that I have approached about the problem are unaware that this is fairly common, and are reluctant to replace this rather expensive component without toying around with other perceived "fixes", such as replacing the brake fluid and/or the master cylinder.
