1 Tail Light Switch problem

Failure Date: 02/11/2021

My VIN is showing 2 recalls that are incomplete that I have taken to a local dealership to be corrected. My 2011 Hyundai burns oil very quickly within weeks of an oil change. I am constantly adding oil. There is no oil leak detected in the vehicle. I was assured that the engine recall was looked at and not affected but according to this site that recall is incomplete. I also have to replace tail and headlights and when I use a blinker at night the headlights turn off. I had my vehicle serviced at jenkins Hyundai of jacksonville FL 904/420-7171.

2 Tail Light Switch problem

Failure Date: 01/23/2021

Radio went completely out. Head lights and tail light always going out.

3 Tail Light Switch problem

Failure Date: 09/07/2020

I am consistently having to replace my tail and brake lights on both the driver and passenger side every 2-6 months. I just replaced the bulbs in July and now in September, they're bad again. But now even with new bulbs in, the tail lights do not work but the brake lights do. I am also having an issue with the interior dome light not turning off while set on the "door" setting with all doors closed. For this, I have checked the door jamb switch and the inside of the dome light switch and there are no obvious causes for this issue. I'm not sure if these light problems are connected or not, but the dome light worked perfectly fine until I replaced my tail/brake light bulbs yesterday and discovered that they aren't working at all.

4 Tail Light Switch problem

Failure Date: 08/01/2020

The front bumper and grill have partially detached from broken or faulty clips, wheels original size rub against wheel well covering and constant sensor failure for tire api. Actual speed is lower then the speed indicated on the vehicle where as 55 mph actual speed shows 59 on the gage. Cruis control will not work and traction control will not turn off, after replacement of all tires and sensors. Exterior- head lights need replaced every 2 to 3 months due to failure, break lights replaced 6x in 4 months and wiring harness to breaklights has partially melted the casing and entry spot for bulb. Replacement bulb didn't remedy the problem, as break lights now do not work at all on vehicle, only tail lights. Fog light have also been replaced 1x im 1 year and 1 is out. Rear plate light also not wiring. Fuses are good. Possible wiring issue. Faulty body issue and possible computer and or sensor issue.

5 Tail Light Switch problem

Failure Date: 07/01/2020

Tail light burns out after being replaced. Brake lights out; got hit from rear. Window brake light came on in the middle of night while car was parked. . . I was indoors, happened to notice it while looking out house window, apparently had been on for hours until I went outside and turned key and stepped on brake pedal repeatedly. I'm concerned that there's a electrical issue.

6 Tail Light Switch problem

Failure Date: 04/06/2020

The driver side tail light bulb was out. When I attempted to replace it, I noticed that the light assembly molding had melted (due to the heat for the taillight) and I could not remove the tail light bulb. When I looked at the passenger side, it had melted as well. At this time, I even have a taillight bulb that fell into the light assembly on the passenger side because it could not be pulled through the melted molding. The light sockets for both the driver and passenger tail lights had burn marks on them.

7 Tail Light Switch problem

Failure Date: 01/01/2020

Tail light wiring harness melts, then overheats bulbs and melts the tail light housing. Side effect was that my headlights turn off when using a blinker at night. This happens at speed. Not only is it a fire hazard from the wiring melting / bulb overheating / melted tail light housing, but it is a safety hazard from the lake of headlights on a turn. Hundreds of complaints online for 2011-2013 Sonatas with this exact issue. Paid $400 at dealership to get wiring harness and housing replaced, but it is original stock gear so it will likely happena gain.

8 Tail Light Switch problem

Failure Date: 11/13/2019

This is my son's car but the title is in my name. We went to dennis Hyundai for repairs related to several recalls on the 2011 Hyundai Sonata. Beforehand we noticed that the driver side tail light was out. We assumed that it was just a burned out bulb but since the car was in for service we decided to let the service department check it out. The service department at dennis Hyundai investigated and stated that socket on the tail light appeared to be "melted" and it was a defect in the tail light wiring assembly that Hyundai is aware of. The service managers at dennis Hyundai stated that the tail light wiring assembly was redesigned to fix the flaw but that the redesigned tail light wiring assembly does not fit the older model Hyundai Sonatas such as my 2011. Dennis Hyundai wants to charge $311. 42 to fix their defect. A search of the web shows a lot of these complaints. . Read more...

9 Tail Light Switch problem

Failure Date: 09/01/2019

The fuel sensor stopped working. Can not tell how much gas is in the car. My daughter ran out of gas in the middle of the highway on her way home from college! the car has now failed inspection. I was told that it was the fuel sensor. Paid to have this replaced at firestone auto care. Did not fix the problem. Was then told that the Hyundai dealership would have to fix it because it must have to do with the computer system. This car has multiple recalls and even the engine itself blew up. I can not keep lights on it because every time the bulbs are replaced they blow. I even ordered whole other tail light package thinking that would help but it did not. This car is nothing but a safety hazzard!!!!!.

10 Tail Light Switch problem

Failure Date: 07/01/2019

While in drive and park, brakes lights and tail lights keep going out. Have replaced bulbs 4 times in less than a year. Both seat belt lights constantly flashes even when buckled up. Air bags and tire pressure light will not go out after resetting repeatedly. Dome lights no longer work in automatic.

11 Tail Light Switch problem

Failure Date: 10/23/2018

Tail light always keep going out and head light engines keep acting funny my seatbelt don't lock or keep me in place.

12 Tail Light Switch problem

Failure Date: 10/17/2018

Tail lights constantly burning out due to melted tail light assemblies in my 2011 Hyundai Sonata. I could change the bulb and it would only work for a short period of time. Tail light assemblies had to be replaced at a cost of $448. 81. Numerous complaints posted online for the same issue. I have also emailed Hyundai directly. This is a major safety issue.

13 Tail Light Switch problem

Failure Date: 10/03/2018

Driver side tail light assembly melted causing brake light to not turn on when depressed. No reasonable explanation provided by the Hyundai dealership that would explain why components melted. I. E. , 'riding the brakes'. For the most part my commute is rural, few stops, minimal braking. Replacing the assembly does not address the question as to why it melted. Maintenance is done as recommended and the vehicle is in good to excellent condition. The instrument panel does not alert driver to this problem thereby posing a problem of rear end collision during night driving and/or pulled over by the police for faulty tail light.

14 Tail Light Switch problem

Failure Date: 08/15/2018

I've had problems with all front and rear lights. Mainly the headlights, tail lights and brake lights burning out. Since I got the car I've had problems with my brake lights not lighting up on one side, the tail light will work fine but once I press that brake my passenger brake light won't light up. Also I had my passenger side brake light heat up and melt the socket and housing of the taillight. All lights burn out way too soon like the car is providing too much juice and frying the bulbs.

15 Tail Light Switch problem

Failure Date: 04/20/2018

I have several complaints with my Sonata as it relates to brakes and tail lights. I have had to replace the brake stopper as it was making the car randomly slow down in when I was driving on the highway at speeds in excess of 70 mph . . When this was happening the traction control light also remained on in the dashboard. I also had brake calibers that were locked in place on my front brakes causing an issue having metal against metal. At this same time, my tail lights were remaining on even when the car was off. The stopper fixed this issue but I was also advised that I had to replace the whole rear light module because the wires had melted together this time it was the left side. In October I relaxed the whole right side rear lighting module because the wires had melted together in that light too! all of these repairs took place within a years timeframe. I have documentation but not with me right at this moment. All of these scenarios are pretty scary and put me and my son at risk. Not too mention my car is currently under an oil consumption test becaus we have no idea where the engine oil is going. The car has 140,000 miles.

16 Tail Light Switch problem

Failure Date: 03/01/2018

Tl- the contact owns a 2011 Hyundai Sonata. The contact stated that her tail light bulbs had repeatedly gone out without warning. The contact had taken the vehicle to an independent mechanic where they have repeatedly replaced both tail lights; however, the failure persisted. The contact then took the vehicle to bakersfield Hyundai(5300 wible rd, bakersfield, CA 93313) where they informed her that her left tail light had melted and that right tail light harness had shorted. The manufacturer had yet to be notified of the failure. The vehicle had yet to be repaired. The failure mileage was unknown. Jo.

17 Tail Light Switch problem

Failure Date: 07/22/2017

Heard a noise in the trunk of my car while I was driving on the I was on the interstate. Checked the back of the car and the right tail light assembly was hanging from the car. The only thing keeping it from falling off were the light wires. The plastic bolts were completely broken off. Checked the left rear assembly and was the same. The plastic is broken and brittle. This could be a major safety issue for me and the other drivers on the roadway. Called Hyundai and of course they were not interested in assisting in anyway. Never buy another Hyundai.

18 Tail Light Switch problem

Failure Date: 07/01/2017

Rear passenger side tail light wasn't working and when I tried to replace it, the plastic housing where the light bulb goes had melted. Now the light bulb doesn't fit in the hole. A google search of this problem indicates there are many others that have the same problem. Sounds like a defect to me.

19 Tail Light Switch problem

Failure Date: 05/17/2017

The rear tail lights need to be replaced constantly and have gotten so hot as to melt the tail light assemblies.

20 Tail Light Switch problem

Failure Date: 05/01/2017

The plastic housing for the brake light bulb melted and deformed on both the driver and passenger side. The brake light bulbs burned out and could not be replaced causing a dangerous no brake light situation. I had to replace the complete tail light assembly on both sides. From speaking with the dealer and researching online I discovered this is a very common problem.

21 Tail Light Switch problem

Failure Date: 04/23/2017

Purchased this car in September 2016,replaced rear drivers side tail light, two weeks later the same tail light blew out and I replaced it again. I have replaced this same tail light every month now since I purchased the car. I have also changed the oil faithfully since I purchased the car in September of 2016. The oil light started illuminating last month(March)then it would go out,I had the oil changed,3 weeks later the light illuminated and the check engine light illuminated again, again,I had the oil changed first week of April. I was driving home from running errands, car would not pick up speed on the interstate so I pulled off to the shoulder got out checked under the hood because the check engine light had illuminated again and the car had a knocking noise coming from the engine compartment,I check the oil dipstick,it was bone dry,I had just had the oil changed maybe two weeks prior. I had the car towed home, put a couple of quarts of oil in the car, started it up and it stalled out in the driveway. April 26,I had it towed to my mechanic shop to diagnose the issue. Today April 28,2017 he tells me that the oil bearing is losing oil pressure and now I need a new engine.

22 Tail Light Switch problem

Failure Date: 02/15/2017

The contact owns a 2011 Hyundai Sonata. While driving the vehicle, the driver's side tail light separated from the vehicle. The contact stated that the vehicle was taken to glasden Hyundai (located at 28000 telegraph rd, southfield, mi 48034, (877) 814-3153) where it was diagnosed that the tail light support melted. The vehicle was repaired. Several months later, the passenger side tail light experienced a similar failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not contacted or notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 90,000.

23 Tail Light Switch problem

Failure Date: 09/15/2016

Brake tail light constantly malfunctions. It has been replaced several times and it keeps failing. When you brake the light does not come on and it could cause an accident.

24 Tail Light Switch problem

Failure Date: 09/01/2016

2011 Hyundai Sonata. Consumer writes in regards to vehicle tail light assembly threaded studs embedded into brittle, badly cracked plastic. The consumer stated the tail light assemblies fell ut of the body panels. The consumer believed, it was a result of poor quality plastic or over tightening the nuts on the studs at the factory.

25 Tail Light Switch problem

26 Tail Light Switch problem

Failure Date: 07/03/2016

Came out to the parked vehicle in our driveway to find the entire driver side rear light assembly falling out. The car was never hit or in an accident. Noticed that the studs (fasteners) going into the tail light assembly cracked apart and separated from the studs and the assembly allowing the assembly to fall from the body. A new tail light assembly will be needed to repair. This looks as though there could be a tensile strength problem with the plastic. If it falls off there is no tail light and it could damage another vehicle if on the highway.

27 Tail Light Switch problem

Failure Date: 06/01/2016

Brake lights assembly is messed up. I am having to replace both tail lights.

28 Tail Light Switch problem

Failure Date: 02/27/2016

Yesterday I was traveling on the interstate going approximately 80mph. In my side mirror I noticed something dangling from the rear of my car, within a millisecond I am watching my tail light fly off my car right into the vehicle behind me. I pulled in to the next rest stop and found that my tail light had blew off my car. The car behind me followed me into the rest stop, thankfully there was no damage or injury to them or their car. Yesterday I had been visiting my dad in the hospital 100 miles away from my home. Before I got in my car I stuck a a huge sheet pan in my trunk-fyi there was no previous damage to the tail light or the rear of my car at all.

29 Tail Light Switch problem

Failure Date: 02/11/2016

Came out to the parked vehicle in our driveway to find the entire passenger rear light assembly falling out. The car was never hit or in a accident. Noticed that the studs (fasteners) going into the tail light assembly cracked apart and separated from the studs and the assembly allowing the assembly to fall from the body. A new tail light assembly will be needed to repair. This looks as though there could be a tensile strength problem with the plastic. This seems to be a problem reoccurring with people throughout the social media.

30 Tail Light Switch problem

Failure Date: 11/25/2015

I had the same problem recently, my tail light assembly melted around the connector for the brake light bulb on the driver and passenger side. The connector and bulb got so hot that surrounding plastic and connector plastic melted, causing the brake light to fail and making replacement cost around $650. The problem also caused a fuse to short out and the brake sensor under the paddle failed (which is already an ongoing issue currently being recalled for Sonata¿s ) and the car would not start. Hyundai dealer claim replacement bulbs were put in wrong when changed out which caused the problem, but I find that hard to believe. I decided to do a little research and found hundreds of complaints for the same exact problem. I agree this should be recalled by NHTSA. This is definitely a manufacturing defect that is causing a safety hazard for 2011 Hyundai drivers and other drivers that encounter cars with the failing brake light assembly.

31 Tail Light Switch problem

Failure Date: 11/13/2015

Tail light assembly is melting around the connector for the brake light bulb. The connector and bulb get so hot that surrounding plastic and connector plastic melt causing the brake light to fail and making replacement impossible. Hyundai replaced two melted brake light assemblies on the passenger side and one brake light assembly on the drivers side in less than 4 years. Now the driver side brake light assembly is melting again. This is a fire hazard and a safety hazard because the brake light stops working when the connector melts. Hyundai replaced two assemblies under warranty. I paid $250 for one brake light assembly and now Hyundai wants to charge me $250 for the fourth brake light assembly. This should be recalled by NHTSA. Googling the Hyundai 2011 brake like assembly list many other people with the same issue. This is a manufacturing defect that is causing a safety hazard for 2011 Hyundai drivers and other drivers that encounter cars with the failing brake light assembly.

32 Tail Light Switch problem

Failure Date: 10/03/2015

Rubber washer broke off brake pedal allowing the brake lights to stay on all the time. It burnt up both tail light lenses and brake lights. There was no way to shut the brake lights off without disconnecting the battery or removing the bulbs, which I did and burnt my fingers.

33 Tail Light Switch problem

Failure Date: 09/01/2015

The engine on my car seized and was towed to the dealership. While being repaired, the dealership found that my tail light assemblies had melted including the wires and I had no brake lights. I believe this is a safety issue. My warranty will not cover it and is saying it's a cosmetic issue, not safety.

34 Tail Light Switch problem

Failure Date: 08/24/2015

In mid--August 2015, my car began to have odd things happen such as the car alarm randomly going off. I replaced the battery thinking it may be the cause. That did not help. The alarm still randomly went off. I did not think this was a serious problem until my daughter was driving at highway speeds. On Aug 14th she reported to me that her steering became erratic regardless of what she did. After she pulled over, she noticed the fuel gauge went to zero and the low fuel light began blinking despite having recently filled the tank. When she got back on the road, the cruise control suddenly stopped working. Finally, within the next couple of days, the brake lights came on and would not go off. This caused the left tail light assembly to completely melt! then, on Aug 24th, she drove the car to o'brien Hyundai in ft myers, FL. They replaced the steering angle sensor, sending unit, brake switch, brake switch stopper, and tail light assembly. They could not tell her or me what the root cause was for this electrical issue that nearly caused a accident.

35 Tail Light Switch problem

Failure Date: 07/21/2015

I walked out of my home and around the back of the vehicle. I noticed that the right rear brake light housing (passenger's side) was sticking out about 1 inch from the vehicle. I opened the trunk and removed the interior access panel cover to look at the light assembly from the inside and found that all the mounting holes were fractured/shattered, and none of the studs like bolts were attached to the tail light assembly. The only thing holding the housing assembly onto the car was the taillight wire assembly. There was no damage to the vehicle in any way. No surface scratches. No body damage. It appears that the plastic shattered from cracks incurred at installation when overly tightened at factory and/or normal vibration of the vehicle.
