The vehicle was not repaired for the recent failure. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 50,000.

37 Tail Light Switch problem

Failure Date: 06/29/2015

My Hyundai Sonata tail lights, brake lights are melting the paneling and destroying the sockets where the bulbs go. The dealer service department charged me $250 to replace the brake lamp switch which was a recall on 2011 Hyundai Sonatas but claimed my car was not one on the service recall. The service department said the bulbs had melted the paneling and that they had to shave down the panel to get the bulb to work. Now the left tail light is not working and they said I need to replace it for another $250 this is not caused by me the consumer and with the melting of this I am afraid it will cause an elecrtrical fire in my rear. Hyundai needs to fix this issue and refund me money I already paid out.

Failure Date: 05/30/2015

Riding down the interstate look through my side mirror and noticed my tail light hanging off and it fell off before I could stop to check it,and when I did stop I noticed the one one the opposite side was about to do the same.

40 Tail Light Switch problem

Failure Date: 02/17/2015

Went to lakeland automall which is a Hyundai dealership to get some recalls taken care of. Upon arrival I gave them some recall paperwork in which they refused to look at and said that they have it in their database. The recall that has to do with the "stop lamp switch malfunction" was not complete. When I got my car back I checked my brake lights and they did not work properly. I told them that when I drive in cruise control my car releases it and my brake lights stay illuminated and my esc control light comes on. Also on ocassion one of my tail brake lights work but not the other. They told me that they fixed this problem last April of 2014 but apparantly the same problem is replicating. They then told me it needed a whole tailight assembly.

42 Tail Light Switch problem

Failure Date: 01/27/2014

Found left rear fender tail light assembly no longer mounted. Further inspection found all four mount stud plastic molding broken away, light assembly being supported by single electrical connector. Dealer service department was not surprised and stated they have seen this issue before, most likely over torqued during manufacture. Now, 6/17/2014, at 68111 odometer, the right tail light assembly, p/n 92402-3q000, had the same physical/mechanical failure. This poses a serious threat not only to other vehicles inability to determine what my vehicle is doing but as a foreign object threat to other vehicles as 5 pound, two foot long projectile.

43 Tail Light Switch problem

Failure Date: 11/21/2013

Nov. 21, 1013 exterior lighting tail light. I am the original owner of a 2011 Hyundai Sonata (approx 28,000 miles). I walked out to my parked car and noticed that the drivers side rear tail light was hanging by some wires. I had passengers in the car and there was no impact , accident, or anything else to cause the tail light to pop off and hang by some threads. Upon further inspection I could see that the plastic studs were broke and the metal stud was detached or never attached. The following day I took it to the laguna niguel Hyundai dealership that I purchased it from. One the service advisors ,346, came out and looked at the tail light. . He saw plastic pieces around the screws that were cracked and broken off which caused the tail light to dislodge and fall off. He said that I was fault and he wrote me an estimate for $248. 00. I am obviously not at fault. The dealership taped the tail light onto the body frame. I was very lucky that the tail light did not fall off ,I did not cause an accident, it was raining, and that I was not pulled over by the police. I phoned Hyundai to file a case. I received a phone call from the dealership on 11/28/13. I was told to bring the car in so that the service manger, [xxx] could look at the car (very in convenient, the car had been at their dealership 3 days prior for several hours while they serviced 3 more recalls for this vehicle). [xxx] basically did nothing except walk out to the car. He did not take the tape off to inspect the problem. He told me that he had been touch with Hyundai. Information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. C. 552(b)(6).

44 Tail Light Switch problem

Failure Date: 10/31/2013

The passenger rear tail light fell out of the housing unit. There was no noise or issue before hand & it wasn't noticed until I came to a complete stop at my destination where I saw it hanging along the side of the car. I pushed it back info the housing unit as firmly as I could and continued into my appointment. Upon leaving, I instinctively lowered my speed to 45-50 mph when I heard a thud about 20 miles from where I first noticed it had fallen out. The total unit had then broke loose from the housing, the wiring came undone & the light fixture crashed into the highway (60 mph speed limit) where the automobile behind me had to swerve to avoid the fixture hitting his vehicle, as it bounced around on the pavement because of the dropping.

45 Tail Light Switch problem

Failure Date: 10/15/2013

Complaintant walked out of home to vehicle. Upon approaching vehicle, complaintant noticed that the left rear brake light housing (driver's side) was detached, and sticking out about 1 inch from the vehicle. Complaintant carefully slid the housing back into its cavity, where it stayed. Complaintant then departed. About 3 days later, complaintant noticed that the housing was again detached from the vehicle, and again slid it back into place. Over time, the complaintant repeated returning the housing into the cavity three (3) additional times. When the complaintant was confronted with a 5th event of the housing detaching from the vehicle, complaintant shined a flashlight down into the cavity, and saw that the housing mounting sockets were fractured/shattered, and none of the several mounting studs/bolts were attached. But, the studs/bolts were still attached to the vehicle shell. The only thing holding the housing assembly onto the car, were the wires to the brake light, back-up light, and turn signal light. No surface scratches, nor body damage experienced. After inspecting the defective housing, complaintant surmised that Hyundai tail light housing is made of hard, brittle plastic, which shatters when overly tightened at factory, or due to the vibration of this overly hard riding vehicle. Additionally, complaintant noticed when vehicle was purchased new, that the driver's side tail light was not flush with the rear trunk gate, and was extended outward about 1/4 inch. The light assembly on the right/passenger side was flush with the trunk gate, and has not produced a similar issue, yet. Complaintant secured housing to the vehicle cavity by using duct tape. Complaintant scheduled vehicle repair with Hyundai dealership for tomorrow. Update to follow.

46 Tail Light Switch problem

Failure Date: 08/23/2013

While driving my 2011 Hyundai Sonata (approx 45,000 miles) down the highway the right rear tail light popped off and was hanging. After looking in the trunk at the inside tail light area, I saw plastic pieces around the screws that were cracked and broken off; thus causing the tail light to pop off and hang. I was very lucky that the tail light did not fall off the car completely and cause an accident. I then dicovered that the left rear tail light studs were beginning to break off too and do the same thing. When I took it to the dealership they claimed the clips broke but it looked forced and would not be covered under warranty. Understand this car was not involved in an accident and I am a stay at home mom who has a garage for the car. I was simplying driving down the road and the tail light popped off. This is a huge safety concern for me and others.

47 Tail Light Switch problem

Failure Date: 08/15/2013

Rear tail light on drivers side for no reason broke off from the car. There was no accident , no damage or evidence of someone hitting it. Looks like the part of the light holding it to the car just broke off for no reason. Dealer said not covered by warranty.

48 Tail Light Switch problem

Failure Date: 06/28/2013

While driving the car on the highway the back drivers side tail light flew off the car and into traffic. I was able to retrieve the taillight and the plastic holding all 4 bolts in place were broken. I read online and there are several other incidents of this so I feel I needed to report it to prevent any accidents in the future.

49 Tail Light Switch problem

Failure Date: 02/26/2013

Add me to the growing list of tail light issues. My taillight was found hanging for no apparent reason. When I took it to the dealership for warranty replacement, pictures were taken and forwarded to their rep as the dealer had not seen this issue before and they were looking for authorization. Although there was no exterior damage to the tailllight, the inside plastic where it is mounted to the car was all broken up. A determination was made by someone who had not even seen the vehicle to deny warranty work due to damage. There is no damage to my car! the dealer offered to install the taillight at no charge if I would buy the part. I didn't feel that I should pay $182 for a new taillight and they offered to find me one used. What does that tell you? I was able to find an aftermarket replacement for $61 and they will install for free. How foolish of Hyundai to lose a customer for a cheap repair. What good is their warranty if they don't honor it? and, by the way, they don't recognize your website with all others who have issues.

50 Tail Light Switch problem

Failure Date: 02/15/2013

Left driver's side tail light assembly popped out. It appears that the bolt mounts have broken due to a defect. I am also having problems with the trunk releasing without intentionally opening. Several times, I have found the trunk open in the morning or when I return to the car after work, or shopping. Hyundai service says that I accidently push the release button somehow. This is not the case as I purposely place the key fob where it cannot be activated and still have that problem. Also, the low-beam headlights are not sufficient. The only cast a beam about 50 feet in front of the vehicle with a distinct line of light about 5 feet above the road. While this is not a problem on straight roads, it is a hazard when driving on hilly roads.

51 Tail Light Switch problem

Failure Date: 01/01/2013

Hyundai Sonata 2011 brake lights. We bought our car new. We have had to change out brake lights a few times a year. Now, the signal, brake or tail lights don't work. Before, at the service department, we had the lights fixed. They said, "there was a shortage in the wiring, and had burned. " we had to pay for it. We have had continual problems with the brake lights. The lights no longer work. The rear window lights remains constant. Never goes off unless car in off. We can't drive our car. Now, they are telling us recall "136" is not suitable for our situation. Also, they are implying that recalls are not extended beyond an expired warranty. Service department is charging us $800. 00 to fix a problem that is not our problem. We are out of a car and money we don't have to fix Hyundai's problem. We have been having problems with our lights for over 5 years is not more.

52 Tail Light Switch problem

Failure Date: 11/01/2012

I looked in my rear view mirror while driving and saw something hanging from car. All of the plastic brackets inside my left rear tail light had broken and my light was hanging on by the wires. Two months later the same thing happened with my right rear tail light - all of the inside brackets broke and it was hanging by the wires. There was no incident either time to trigger this. Both lights were still working but were no longer able to be held.

53 Tail Light Switch problem

Failure Date: 09/08/2012

Many other buyers of this vehicle have complained same issue. Tails lights are falling out on their own without any impact. It seems that plastic studs holding lights in place are cracking off. There are four studs that metal screws are holding light on by. Hyundai is not honoring this as a warranty, this is a dangerous situation because one driver had his light pop out driving on highway.

54 Tail Light Switch problem

Failure Date: 08/26/2012

The contact owns a 2011 Hyundai Sonata. While driving approximately 65 mph the driver side tail light unit detached from the vehicle. The passenger side tail light unit was also loose. The vehicle was not taken to the dealer for diagnostics. The vehicle was not repaired. The approximate failure mileage was 38,000.

55 Tail Light Switch problem

Failure Date: 08/15/2012

I was driving at the freeway speed limit, I did not feel anything when it happened but I know that it happened on the freeway. I pulled over to get some gas, looked back near the gas cap and saw that my driver's side tailight assembly was hanging by the wires onto my bumper. When it fell out, it bounced and placed several dings and chips in the plastic bumper. I noticed that the wheels(cogs) inside the tailight assembly were completely broken off. I had to take the light out and place it in my trunk and drive the rest of the two hundred miles with no left tail light or turn signal. If it had fallen into the middle of the freeway, I am sure there would have been much more to write about and none of it good!.

56 Tail Light Switch problem

Failure Date: 07/23/2012

I opened my trunk and the passengers side tail light was broken loose, and only being held in place by the wires. All the bolts that fasten the plastic tail light to the vehicle were broken off. There was no damage or impact to the light or vehicle.

57 Tail Light Switch problem

Failure Date: 07/10/2012

After driving down the interstate I pulled up at my hotel to valet my car. When I walked to the back of my car I realized that my driver's side tail light was hanging by the wires. After further inspection I was able to determine that all of the plastic mounting tabs were broken. The dealership indicated they had seen this same problem before, but would not replace mine because the mileage was over 60k. This should be a recall item in my opinion considering brake lights/ tail lights are important to have!.

58 Tail Light Switch problem

Failure Date: 06/26/2012

I got in my car after work and drove to a restaurant. When I got out, I noticed that the rear passenger side tail light had slid out of place and was hanging by the electrical wires. I was not in an accident, ever. My car is in perfect condition. When I took the car to the dealer, the parts associate informed me that all the plastic pieces that hold the screws were broken. He also noticed that the driver's side tail light was loose. One of the plastic pieces that hold a screw was broken on that tail light. He ordered two tail lights for me. The parts manager doesn't think this is a warranty issue, because the plastic pieces are broken. But, they have to be defective, because absolutely nothing happened to my car.

59 Tail Light Switch problem

Failure Date: 05/22/2012

The contact owns a 2011 Hyundai Sonata. The contact stated that the rear driver side brake light separated from the vehicle while driving. The contact believed that the tail light stud was defective and caused the rear tail light to separate from the vehicle. The manufacturer stated that the failure was not a manufacturing defect and denied assistance with the repair. The vehicle was not repaired. The VIN was not available. The failure and the current mileage was 33,000.

60 Tail Light Switch problem

Failure Date: 02/14/2012

When I arrived at work today I noticed the drivers side rear tail light assembly was loose. Upon further inspection I noticed that the plastic clips that hold the assembly in place were broken. I've contacted the dealer and have gotten the run around about what caused the issue. I haven't been involved in any type of accident and there is no visible damage to the exterior of the car. Currently, still trying to get it fixed but the dealer doesn't seem to be any help.

61 Tail Light Switch problem

Failure Date: 11/27/2011

While walking up to my wife's 2011 Hyundai Sonata in a parking lot, we noticed that the passenger side tail light was dislodged from the body of the car. The electrical wires were still attached to the tail light, but there was no damage to the back of the car or the tail light itself. However, we did see the four bolt holders that attach the tail light to the body of the car had ruptured and broke apart. Within an hour we took the car to our local Hyundai dealer and they said they had never seen a defect like this. They insisted that this must have been due to an impact, even though there was no evidence of damage to the tail light, the back of the car or any signs of vandalism. Since they felt it was due to an impact (not covered by the warranty), we had to pay nearly $300 for the tail light to be replaced. Later that day, I noticed the driver side tail light was becoming loose to the touch as well. The next day my wife called the corporate line for Hyundai to report this tail light defect and report the dealership we went to as well. Within 2 days the dealership called us back and said this is definitely some kind of defect and it should have been covered by our warranty. They refunded our money and also replaced the driver side tail light at no charge. Every Sonata should have their tail lights checked and recalled (at no charge) if these defective bolt holders continue to be found as brittle and flimsy as ours were. Thankfully the tail light did not fall off our car while we were driving or it would have become a serious road hazard. Please bring this to the attention of all Sonata owners immediately.

62 Tail Light Switch problem

Failure Date: 11/25/2011

I was pulling out of a driveway and heard a clunk. The next day I noticed the left tail light assembly had fallen out. It was still held on by it's wires. There is no damage to the exterior of my car or to the lens of the assembly. The interior retaining nuts had all been broke. Hyundai will not give me any answers how this has happened.

63 Tail Light Switch problem

Failure Date: 06/18/2011

I have a new 2011 Sonata. I been having every problem you can imagine with my car. This time it's my left tail light, it was literally hanging on because of my trunk. I looked inside where the light use to be attached and all the plastic crumbled apart. I called Hyundai about it and they said they had a new tail light to replace mine with and when I got there found out it was broken, so they took a tail light off another Sonata and put it on mine until they order another one. My original tail light scratched and craved the paint on my car in and around that area. It could have easily caused an accident if I had not been so cautious driving after seeing it hanging on by my trunk. One of the service guys told me this was the 4th time he seen this!.
