I have read numerous complaints from earlier years, but the owners were told that no recall has been required by the NHTSA. I am experiencing a potentially dangerous situation on a 2012 vehicle with less than 2500 miles on it. A recall should be activated by the NHTSA.
Popping noise when turning the steering wheel left or right while the car is in motion especially in a tight maneuver when parking or backing up. After reading about many complaints on the internet where some drivers have even lost t;heir power steering completely, I am of the opinion that a recall is warranted as this is definitely a safety issue. The culprit in most of the complaints seems to be an inexpensive part made of rubber or neoprene called a "flexible motor driven power steering coupling". As this part begins to fail, serious steering problems begin to appear which could lead to injury or even death.
75,000 miles , Hyundai dealership informing me I have a clicking noise when turning the steering wheel. I contacted the dealer and was told that it would cost $276 to replace the part. Because this part is made of rubber and has a high failure rate I do not know why a safety recall has not been issued. The loss of steering control is definitely a safety issue and should not be something that the dealerships can use to exploit the consumer.

My 2012 Sonata with 89300 miles was making clicking noise when I turned the steering wheel. The steering was lose. When going over bumps the steering wheel sounded like it was coming apart making a harsh metal clanking sound. I took it into hyaundi and they replaced the steering coupler and it seems to have fixed the issue. This seems like a major saftey issue with this car which should be taken care of by hyaundi.
Steering wheel would make a clacking noise when the steering wheel was turned or when going over bumps in the road. The speed of the vehicle did not matter. An audible click could be heard when the wheel was turned to the right. When the car went over any speed bumps or pot holes, a clacking noise could be heard from inside the steering wheel. Took it to the dealership and found that the steering coupler was completely worn down. It started very subtly for a few months, but then within a month, would make noise with even the slightest movements or bumps.

The steering wheel makes a noise like its going to become separated from the vehicle. The part needed to fix the problem is like a coupler, I called the dealership and the service manager states that many Sonatas present the same problem and the fix costs approximately 315. 00 dollars. Hyundai has issued a recall but the problem is common in most cars.
Clunk noise in the steering wheel that is getting worst while I am driving, turning, speed bumps, stationary just touching the wheel makes the horrible noise. I was reading a 2011 recall probably the same problem.
Loud noticeable clicking noise coming from the steering column. The clicking noise appear when the car is driven on uneven roads, speed bumps or on city bumpy roads. The alarming clicking noise is also noticeable while the car is parked and the steering wheel is turned from side to side. It has gotten worse since we¿ve noticed it, few months ago to the point that the clicking noise is much louder now and there is a delay in the steering process. We took the car several times to the dealer with no luck on identifying this problem. A web search on this specific problem yield many results and complaints from other drivers and car owners. I learned on the safety issue that our car has and about the service bulletin (TSB #14-st-002-1) that was issued by the manufacture to remedy this hazard. The manufacture has advised the dealers to replace the motor driven power steering (mdps) coupling, the one that was initially installed is deteriorating. I¿m surprised that there isn¿t any recall issued yet to warn drivers from a chance of total deterioration of the motor driven power steering (mdps) coupling. Please be advised that the only way I learned about this safety issue is by searching on the web and matching the steering failure with others who have the same symptoms, the dealers we went to couldn¿t pinpoint this issue.
I own a 2012 Hyundai Sonata se 2. 0t. The condition I am describing has progressively gotten worse starting out as something you barley noticed to an issue that now causes you to be scared to drive the car. This car has about 75000 miles and has a rattle noise coming from the steering column especially when traveling over a bumpy surface. At higher rates of speed as on an interstate or passing another vehicle it also rattles and the wheel begins to shake in your hands. It also has a knocking sound when the vehicle is stationary and you rock the steering wheel back and forth. This a very unsafe situation and needs to be addressed. This issue is well known with other owners of 2012 Sonatas and recall has been established for 2011 vehicles. As I have discovered this can be an expensive repair for relatively inexpensive parts. Owners should not be burdened with repairs for what is clearly a manufacturer of part defect. This is a huge safety issue. I had intended to give this car to my daughter who will soon be a teen driver. It would be shameful for an inexperienced teen driver's life to be as risk in a vehicle with steering problems of this nature due to the fact her parents cant afford to pay for the repair or buy another car and the manufacturer's unwillingness to stand behind their product. Please address this issue. Mine is not the only complaint / concern over this. There are many unhappy owners out there. Keep in mind these 2011/2012 Sonatas have had several issues that are well documented.
