While passing a vehicle traveling approximately 40 mph in a 50mph zone, my 2008 Hyundai Sonata experienced sudden unintended acceleration approaching a speed of 65-70 mph. Even after applying firm continuous pressure on brake pedal was unable to slow vehicle down. While continuing to apply pressure to brake pedal, I shifted automatic gear shift into neutral and was able to gradually coast onto the shoulder of the road. When vehicle came to a complete stop. The engine was still running at a very high rpm and sounded as if it were a jet airplane taking off. Turned ignition off and let car sit for 1-2 minutes while I contemplated now what? was unable to put car in park, so started car in neutral. Was able to move gear shift to drive and carefully drove car home. Called Hyundai corporate office next morning (Monday August 31, 2020) to report my frightening and very dangerous experience. Then called my local Hyundai dealer to report and request they come and pick the vehicle up as I did not feel it was safe to drive.

Specifically, as one comes to a stop, the brake pedal is so close to the accelerator both laterally and vertically, that the operators foot may hit both pedals at the same time just before coming to a stop, causing an unintended sudden acceleration. This is a significant safety issue for the driver, occupants, pedestrians and other vehicles or items in the path of the car. I have has 4 such incidents, one involving a rear end bump. The Hyundai dealer inspected the car for sudden acceleration and found nothing and dismissed the concern. Hyundai custom,er care representative erin thompson stated " I did not design the car, it operates as designed and there is nothing I can do for you". The car suddenly lurched forward about ten feet, knocking over a wood fence post and incurring $3,000 damage to the car. I still had my foot on the brake, and slammed it instantly as the car lurched. Fortunately, no person was walking along the sidewalk, and I had my seat belt in place. I insisted the car be towed to the nearest Hyundai dealer rather than to a local repair shop, since I wanted to find the cause of this acceleration malfunction. The dealer said they found nothing wrong, other than the front end damage. I insisted that Hyundai national send out an engineer to check the car. I have also found a report on the internet from kmov. Com news in st. Louis 2/28/13, that three local owners there experienced sudden unintended acceleration. The case detailed in the news report was exactly like my experience of sudden lurching acceleration from a parked position, but the Hyundai engineer reported nothing was wrong. However, our experience documents an unintended acceleration problem unrelated to driver error. I have told Hyundai that I will absolutely not continue to drive this car.
