Pushed acceleration at traffic light to cross and turn into neighborhood, car started beeping frantically, 'check hev system' flashed on dash as well as 'turn off engine' while car decelerated to 1-3 mph. Battery meter bar on left side of dash completely depleted showing no battery power supply at all. Turned vehicle off for a few minutes then restarted. Put the vehicle in drive gear and same warnings appear, car doesn't even accelerate when gas pedal is pressed fully, stays at 1-3 mph crawl. Vehicle stalls out after 30 seconds, vehicle turns on but cannot start.

I am leasing a 2017 Hyundai Sonata from car city in michigan. In may 2025, the vehicle received a brand-new engine replacement due to previous problems. I picked the car up on [xxx], and on the same day, the vehicle began malfunctioning. It would not accelerate properly, jerked and stalled, and multiple warning lights — including the check engine light — came on immediately. This made the car unsafe to drive. I contacted the dealer, but they told me to wait until Monday to get it looked at, leaving me with a dangerous and unreliable car. The vehicle had already been in the shop for over two months for the engine issue, and I had only driven it for six months beforehand. I believe the repair or replacement engine is defective or was not properly installed. This creates a serious safety hazard. A car that stalls while driving puts everyone at risk. On 05/27/2025, my rear back-up camera started to malfunction. Last week my dash started to malfunction electronically. When I would start my vehicle, all of the lights would start to turn on and stay on on my dash. My speedometer would not move while I was driving, so I could not see how fast I was going. I believe this is a severe safety issue for myself as well as others. The tachometer would jump up and down and would not function correctly. My dash stated that I had low tire pressure, that I was having problems with my traction control, that my bsd system was not working, that my abs was not working, that my emergency brake was on even though it was not. It also stated that I did have functioning air bags, which is a severe safety hazard in the chance that I could've gotten into a wreck and they might not have worked. It also stated that I was not in drive even though I clearly was. It also stated that I had no power steering while I was driving, before the light would turn off and I could properly steer again. This is a severe safety issue that could put me at risk. Finally, my check engine light turned on and stayed on. Yesterday on 06/09/2025 I was able to take it a vehicle maintenance shop so they could run a full diagnostic test. They discovered that I did not have power steering even though there was fluid due to the electrical problems with my dash. They also discovered the c-can buss was off and that my vehicle was losing communications with the tcm and hvac. It was discovered that this was due to my rear view back-up camera malfunctioning, causing the c-can network to short out. They had to unplug my rear back-up camera to return everything to normal. I have found on Hyundai recall forms that other years of Hyundai models had similar problems and I believe that 2018 Hyundai Sonatas are also having the same problem. I wanted it to be made aware because online, people have stated they are having the same issues. Attached gif that shows part of problem.

The engine light started to come on and go off and when I got the codes ran, it said something along the line of misfire. I had the spark plugs changed and I kept regular maintenance done on oil changes and tune ups. Now my engine is knocking and the vehicle is in limp mode.

The gear shifter design on this Hyundai model is dangerously counterintuitive compared to industry norms. It nearly caused me to drive off a cliff. I encountered a serious safety issue with the gear selector design. In most vehicles — including mercedes, gm, and even pickup trucks — pushing the gear selector down engages forward drive, and up engages reverse or park. Hyundai has reversed this logic. In a rushed moment, I instinctively pushed the shifter down expecting to go forward (as in most cars), but the Hyundai was in reverse. I stepped on the gas and nearly backed off a cliff. This design is not just unfamiliar — it's opposite of established standards. Drivers with muscle memory from other vehicles like any pickup truck, mb, or gm ev are at real risk of making fatal errors. I strongly urge NHTSA to investigate whether this shifter design meets safety and human factors standards. At a minimum, Hyundai should issue a ui/ux recall to standardize shift direction or implement safeguards to prevent this kind of mistake.

Vehicle suddenly accelerated after pulling out of store parking lot at low speed into side street behind vehicle stopped at light (less than a car length in front) while pressing hard on brake. Vehicle lurched forward incrementally during the braking process, but vehicle kept accelerating causing vehicle to hit stopped vehicle numerous times before vehicle engine was finally turned off. Driver of both vehicles could have been seriously hurt. Vehicle was driven home after this incident without incident but has only been driven out of garage and onto and off towing truck. Car has not been inspected except for damage to vehicle and is currently awaiting insurance rep inspection at vehicle repair facility. Once damage is repaired car will be towed to dealership for inspection. Because of the short distance vehicle traveled no warning lamps/messages were noted.

My 2015 Hyundai Sonata has demonstrated multiple instances of unintended acceleration and braking failure: April 20, 2024 – while idling in a drive-thru line, the vehicle suddenly lurched forward without any attempt to accelerate and crashed into the vehicle in front of me. I was unable to stop it. This resulted in the other car being totaled. I took it to a Hyundai dealership afterward, but they found no definitive cause. April 4, 2025 – my daughter was driving and attempted to stop at a red light. Despite applying the brakes, the car did not stop and continued through the intersection, striking the door of another vehicle. May 12, 2025 – today, while using cruise control set to 55 mph, the car began accelerating beyond the set speed without input. It appears the cruise control system is malfunctioning and not disengaging as expected. The vehicle currently shows no open recalls, but I found that similar issues were previously investigated under NHTSA action dp21003 for this model year. These incidents occurred months apart, but the behavior is consistent and extremely dangerous. I am requesting a formal investigation. The safety of my family and others on the road is at risk.

Speedometer display inaccurate speed. Sometimes its shows 1-4mph miles more than the actual speed and other times 6-8mph. Verified issue with sonar system from different truck, street speed limit screen and own gps.

As I was pulling up to a gas pump, my car suddenly accelerated. Applied the brakes to stop but it kept accelerating. My choices were to hit the car in front of me or a snow bank. I chose the snow bank. Tons of damage to my car. Don’t have that info yet, though.

When you accidently hit the side of the brake pedal or slightly touch the brake pedal there is a rubber brake pedal stopper that engages the brake light switch. The brake pedal stopper eventually gets a hole in the middle and will not completely push the tab on the brake light switch all the way and sometime it will not completely release. When this happens and you try to accelerate the car with the gas pedal the car will not respond. In fact, it will actually start to decelerate. This is dangerous if you are trying to pass a vehicle or trying to make a turn with oncoming traffic because the car is slow to respond. Sometimes the car will not respond when you are at a dead stop and press the accelerator. When you pump the gas the switch will let loose from the rubber pedal stopper that is holding it and the car will jump forward suddenly. You could rear end another car very easily. While driving, the vehicle's engine light will randomly turn on and when it does, the car will lose power; meaning, when this occurs, and I press the accelerator pedal, it does not put out the normal, expected amount of acceleration. This problem will persist until I pull over, turn off the vehicle, and turn it back on. However, this does not always fix the issue. Sometimes, when I turn the car off and turn it back on, the check engine light will still be on and I will still encounter the issue. When I brought my vehicle into my local Hyundai dealership, they had the car for 3 days, and when I called to ask what was wrong with it or what they did to fix it, they told me they could not recreate the problem and therefore, did not do anything to the vehicle. So now, I'm at an impasse where this problem is not able to be recreated, thus, unable to get it fixed, but I don't feel completely safe to drive long distances. I also own a 2013 Hyundai Sonata that experienced the same type of issue, and that engine was recalled.

The speedometer in this car is extremely inaccurate and inconsistent with its accuracy. On some occasions, the speedometer can indicate a +-2mph variance at any given speed (good), while other times, the speedometer can indicate a +-6mph variance at any given speed. (bad) the vehicles true speed was verified by gps speed data and by manually calculating given each individual wheel speed in the car. Both measured speeds confirmed that the vehicles speedometer was off by 5-6mph. No modifications performed to the car. This is a serious safety hazard as the driver is given inaccurate information regarding the actual speed of the vehicle and can lead to accidents.

While driving my car on 3 different days the car slowed down, and the lights came epb on, on the dashboard the epb light came on the check engine light came on , forward collision light, auto hold light, slippery road light , and caution light with a ! mark.

When my car is turned on there is a very noticeable shake coming from the engine area. It's not that bad once the car is driving. However, I was driving 40 miles an hour when my check engine light came on, then I was unable to accelerate and my car stalled (it's an automatic car). Once my car started up again, the check engine light was flashing, and I could only drive at like 15-20 miles per hour for my speed. Made it to o'reilly and had them run the check engine light codes for me and it popped up with the p1326 code regarding the knock signal range/performance. I recently got a check engine light code for a p0449 evap vent control valve (it wouldnt allow me to pump gas into the car). I'm unsure if the issues are related but wanted to provide all the details.

Oct 24th, 2024 on highway had accelerated to 75, all of a sudden, car experienced mechanical shutdown, engine light came on would go fast slow down, felt like braking down, engine light was solid, had to get very slowly somehow into the brake down lane. Turned the car off, waited long time. . . Got advice to try to power car back on because was night and was dangerous lane. Car started, drove very slowly home with hazard lights on. Next incident (that I was on hgwy) Nov 24th, 2024 went from 65 to work up to 80mph, the car lights went on for engine, slowing down,no control of the speed, no accelerating, lights, made to pull over. . . Turn car off. . . Waiting 15 minutes, drove in break down lane, was only 7-8 minutes from my house off highway.

My car broke down and now the car does not pick up speed and rattles when I press the gas pedal.

On or about November 13, 2024 our Hyundai Sonata 2020 gas tank almost exploded. We drove our vehicle to a dealership so that it could be checked because we kept hearing something that sounded like a loud pop / thumb underneath our vehicle. We had already been receiving notifications of a powertrain issue with the vehicle for years (without the dealership resolving the issue). So we were taking the vehicle in for numerous reasons when, the minute we drove our vehicle into the service bay (of a new and unrelated dealership) we were told that Hyundai's corporate branch has ordered our vehicle grounded and told us we could not leave with our vehicle or drive our vehicle off the dealership's lot. We were advised that our vehicle had almost exploded and that we were lucky to have brought the vehicle in. We were told that our vehicle should have never left the lot the day we purchased it brand new. We were told that our vehicle's backseats had detached and separated away from the frame of the vehicle. Our vehicle has been at the dealership since the day of the incident (e. G. , on or about November 13, 2024). Our vehicle is still under factory warranty and powertrain warranty and Hyundai was not given us an end in sight or advised the public of the issue with their vehicles. I purchased this vehicle brand new off of the lot February 2024. Since then, I have had two incidents where in the middle of driving my vehicle has completely shut off. The first experience, I was driving 50+ mph. First my headlights went out, my engine shut off, my dashboard shut off, and I was cruising without power or control over my vehicle for about 5 seconds before everything turned back on. I took my car to the dealership where they “could not confirm concern” after driving around for 15 miles trying to recreate the issue. They stated no codes or issues were shown on their end and returned the car to me. 6 months later during late October, my car did the same thing. I was driving 40+ mph and my car shut off in the middle of me driving. I contacted my dealership to inform them it happened again. They told me they did not have any available appointments to bring my car in. Out of frustration I did not bring it in until a few weeks ago for a regular check up. I gave them the exact date and time that my vehicle shut off and they again could not find the issue that caused the car to turn off. I was informed by a Hyundai representative that he anticipates this issue getting worse as it happened twice in the first year of owning it. That when it happens again to get my car towed by Hyundai roadside assistance and straight to the dealership. As stated, I lose complete control of the vehicle. Luckily both instances I have been on a straight road but I have concerns that this could happen at the wrong time leaving my injured.

Hello, thanks for reviewing. I recently bought a brand new Hyundai (VIN provided) and the speedometer intermittently is inaccurate. Maybe 50% of the time, which I would argue is less safe since I can’t reliably tell what my speed is. When it is an issue, it’s worse the faster I drive. It breaks the 10% threshold I’ve read about around 30mph, where it will say 26mph. I brought it to the Hyundai dealership and they claimed they couldn’t replicate the issue so they won’t fix it - but it’s intermittent and I have picture / video proof from multiple dates. I used various speed sources to be sure. I found some Hyundai forums online where many others have the same issue. The speedometer is an important safety feature, not to mention other dependent features, like cruise control. Happy to provide proof by request.

My car experiences issues around acceleration. It often feels like it gets “stuck” or hesitates when I try to accelerate from a stop (ex. A stoplight) or low speed or when I try to merge onto the highway. At times I have not been able to merge onto the highway at a safe speed because my acceleration gets stuck/lags at a low mph (ex. 35 mph onto a 70 mph highway). My car also excessively consumes oil. I started noticing the excessive oil consumption around 115k miles. My oil lamp does not illuminate when low on oil in nearly all cases I have been low on oil. It has only come on once (did not remain on) and oil was not present on the dipstick. I am 687 miles into my current 1,000-mile oil consumption test and have had to top off my oil twice. I started the test because my oil light flashed and oil was not present on the dipstick. The engine light came on 312 miles into the consumption test. I got a diagnostic code from autozone and relayed the diagnostic code to the dealership. The dealership said the code was related to low oil and to fill up with oil and bring the car to the dealership. I filled it with oil and drove the car to luke’s auto for an independent inspection. Their inspection found that the check engine light was from a failed e-cvvt and additional wear was present. I asked if this could be caused by oil consumption issues and they confirmed the possibility. Just over 300 miles from that incident, I checked my oil and it was once again low. I am deeply concerned about the safety of my vehicle due to it's stalling and indicators of potentially seizing. I have had near collisions on the highway due to my vehicle getting "stuck" while accelerating and unable to enter the highway at a safe speed. I am concerned about the consequences of lack of oil and failure of my oil lamp to illuminate to indicate no oil such as my engine seizing or catching fire. I have reported these concerns to the dealership since 1/2/23 and have reported my concerns to hma.

The driver side seat belt wont click and stay in almost half the time I drive my car… after reading other complaints its looking like this is a common thing. Within the past year ive noticed lots of times that when im going to lock my car with my fob, it wont lock and its because the passenger side lock button on the inside of door is in a stuck between lock/unlock position… resulting in me having to lean over to manually unlock the door even when I’ve unlocked my car with both the fob and inside button… all the sudden I noticed too that my speed control will not work at all and be completely unresponsive most times. It will randomly work when I try checking it on highway. Ive had so many issues with my taillights going/burning out constantly and now my headlights have gotten really dim. Im scared to drive at night now. They are much more dimmer than a cars should look like usually. Within the past week I just noticed a random big crack in the dashboard on the passenger side as well… noticed that seems to be a common thing and concern of safety with lots of others who own and drive this same vehicle… my first thought was “what if this crack will effect the airbag and make it deploy?” the crack is literally right over and above where the airbag is… plan on trying to take my car to place on okc that did the anti-theft system software update on my car… but my car has gotten so bad when driving ill be lucky if it makes it there in one piece. My car has started to shake so bad when im driving!!! almost “jumping” at times it feels like. This car has been a pretty good car but when there are multiple complaints of the same issues that continuously keep costing us money and its not because of our doing and in fact the manufacturers faulty equipment and parts that they used to make these cars… they should most definitely be doing recalls and fixing these problems at no cost!.

My transmission literally went out once on me the second day after I financed it. Now, less than a year later, it says I need to replace the transmission again. This is ridiculous.

The contact owns a 2015 Hyundai Sonata. The contact stated while driving at an undisclosed speed, the accelerator pedal was depressed; however, the vehicle failed to accelerate as intended. In addition, the check engine warning light illuminated, and the vehicle lost motive power. The vehicle was towed to the dealer where it was diagnosed with engine failure. The contact was informed that the engine needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure; however, the engine replacement request was denied. The failure mileage was approximately 140,829.

Started car normally this morning, engaged transmission, car would not accelerate. Pressing gas pedal had no effect. After a couple of blocks, shut off engine. Then restarted, same problem. Had to get to appointment, so stopped and restarted twice more, second time ran normally and I reached my appointment. Started car to return home, same problem for some seconds, then normal. Later taking son to medical appointment, lost pedal function mid trip for a few seconds, then continued to appointment.

In February 2024, on a day with snow on the ground no less, my husband was driving over the verrazano bridge from brooklyn, NY to staten island, NY, when the car suddenly started shaking and the speed dropped from 50 to 20 in about 10-30seconds. The car started smoking and filling up with fuel fumes. Cars were beeping at him, almost crashing into the back of the car. He was able to make it to safety and had the car towed to the nearest Hyundai dealership/service. The issue was an injector. On Saturday, [xxx], I got into the car with my two children (age [xxx] and [xxx] old). The car started shaking, all of the check engine lights flew on, the car quickly filled up with fumes, the exhaust was smoking, and the rpm dial was dancing. I have never been so terrified. The car was towed and again the issue was diagnosed as an injector. Not the same one, a different one. I have been told by my local Hyundai that this is an ongoing issue and that Hyundai only changes 1 at a time, knowing that the others may be faulty. This is unacceptable. The vehicle speedometer is occasionally 5mph off. When I first get into the vehicle after it’s been sitting for a while and drive around, the speedometer works perfectly. If I shut the vehicle off while getting gas, running an errand or something similar that involves the vehicle sitting for a semi-short period of time, the speedometer will be 5mph off when driving. I initially detected this issue be noticing that my speedometer was different from the speed posted on a gps based speedometer on my phone, who’s speed exactly matched those road side speed measuring signs found on the highway, but both of those measuring devices differed from my vehicles speedometer. I brought my vehicle into my local Hyundai dealership who verified the problem exists, but mentioned that this was a software issue which needs to be corrected my Hyundai corporate. I contacted Hyundai corporate at the number provided to my by the dealership, and was essentially told that there is nothing they are willing to do to fix the issue.

I purchased a new 2024 Hyundai Sonata hybrid limited on [xxx]. At about 2000 miles I noticed the speedometer of the car and the waze app were reporting different speeds. This is an intermittent problem so sometimes the vehicles speedometer and the waze app match and other times the vehicles speedometer and the waze app disagree. I've repeatedly taken this car to the dealership where I purchased it complaining about the problem and they can't seem to find a problem. Hyundai documented the problem is with waze and there's "delay" in the signal from the satellite to the waze app, even though I've stated my other vehicles speedometers and the vehicle speed reported by waze match. Hyundai documented this anomaly is what gives the vehicle it's "uniqueness. " yet they won't resolve this issue. There are several functions in the car that are dependent on the the vehicle's speedometer being correct and when the speedometer is incorrect, these other functions don't work properly either. I've taken the car onto freeways where there are measured mile postings. Sometimes when the speedometer indicates it's at 60 mph it takes 60 seconds to traverse the mile. Other times, when the speedometer indicates its at 60 mph it takes 63 seconds to travel the measured mile. It's not just my car, there are many other customers around the united states that are experiencing this problem and I/we can't seem to get Hyundai to address, fix this problem. My personal opinion is this; Hyundai knew about this problem before they put the car out to the market for sale. So Hyundai knowingly sold a defective vehicle, before they sold the first one of these vehicles. Engine just stopped working. Car stop running turned off in the middle of traffic in dallas TX. I took my car for an oil change the mechanic said he’s had plenty of 2015 Sonata engines just give out and some catch a fire as well. It gave no warning and no smoke. This happened last week.

My car is part of a campaign due to rod-bearing failure where the engine experiences problems such as complete failure, vibrating, hesitating, engine light on, and oil light on. I've been communicating with Hyundai who is not helping me with this issue. I was advised by them to continue driving the car "until the engine seizes", or I hear "a loud knocking noise". Upon inspection, three local Hyundai employees "agreed 100%" I need a new engine. However, per these employees Hyundai corporate will not approve the replacement even though the vehicle is constantly experiencing the above symptoms above, simply because there is not a "loud knocking noise" coming from the engine. Even though all the other issues are present. This is very unsafe. I have a minor child I take to school daily, for an advisor to advise to drive the vehicle until "the engine seizes" is extremely dangerous, especially when they are aware my VIN is associated with engine replacement. My car exhibits symptoms of a rod-bearing failure and this multi-billion dollar company is taking advantage of hard-working urban mothers, by turning a blind eye and trying to require me to pay thousands of dollars up front for a problem they created by selling a vehicle with faulty engine. Again, the technicians indicated I in fact do need the engine replaced, but that Hyundai corporate will require me to pay for a diagnostic test, rod-bearing test, and engine compression test because corporate does not take their word for it. The fact a auto manufacturer is advising people to drive in such an unsafe manner is disheartening. If my child and I get injured in an accident by following their advice, our blood will be on their hands!.

The car was running well when suddenly loss power and stall. Have it check with a scanner it read code p1326 (knock sensor) which has been recalled on other Sonatas, and Hyundai models for the same problem/issue. This code (p1326) have made Hyundai to replace the engine in many cars (recalls). My year made Hyundai Sonata it was not included on the recalls. Now, I have a car with loss power and stalls to move with no safety because of the 2013 was not included in the recalls which has the same issue as those recalled.

I have gone 3 times to dealer because speedometer was off. They confirmed that the speedometer was off but they couldn't do anything about it. They told me that for this car, there is no vss and the speedometer gets the speed from the navigation system. The navigation system is obviously glitching which is causing this. I am not the only person experiencing this. This has to be taken care of and taken seriously.

As I’m driving 75 mph, my car slows down and on the dash board it reads 20 mph limit. I’m on the expressway and, prayerfully, by putting on my hazard blinkers, I pull over, wherever it’s safe, turn car off, restart the car and then it’s fine. Please help because this is a life threatening situation! scared ?? ?? this has occurred several times. . Approximately 1 month ago I took it into service department (kept 1 week and never slowed down on them. Again, once the car is turned off, it drives fine. How can I turn off this 20 mph hour limit on dashboard. Any advice or help you can give me to put me at ease, is critical! thank you in advance.

When driving, an acceleration would sometime cause the car's rpms would drop to zero with the throttle of the vehicle responding poorly. A lose of power occurs and the takes about 15 seconds to feel some power return to the throttle. The feeling of no throttle occurs which is very scary when your reason for accelerating is to pass a vehicle but the sudden lose of power makes it difficult to accelerate properly to pass. The rpms remains none responsive. With the loss of power, the traction control light came on. When the vehicle is turn off and turned back on, the car's issue disappears. But the problem randomly occurs again.

I changed my oil on Saturday and it now has no oil. The engine light started flashing and my engine seized up. Now it does not run at all. It turns on halfway where the dashboard turns on but the motor/engine does not turn. It appears to be white smoke coming out of the car after trying to turn it back on.
