36 Other Fuel System Pump problem of the 2011 Hyundai Sonata

Failure Date: 07/18/2016

Fuel sender (in tank fuel sensor) has failed. First noticed over a year ago with intermittent erroneous fuel gauge reading after refueling, but quickly corrected its self. Noticed the full failure a day after I had refueled and my fuel gauge read half full. Assumed that I was a victim of fuel theft, but no sign of forced entry to my fuel door. I refueled and the car topped off within about a gallon. However the gauge was still reading low. Assumed that maybe the thieves had damaged and partially obstructed my fill hose with a lost syphon hose. Over the next few days the gauge slowly rose to full. Now the gauge fluctuates between full and half full. Researched the sending unit and found that this was a known problem with three models and a TSB (sb-10052842-7701) for inspection of the unit was issued may 2013 and a replacement procedure (sb-10060967-2273) was issued June 2014. Aftermarket replacement part is affordable at approximately $45 from third part vendor, but the replacement procedure is complicated by the high risk of working with gasoline and either trying to remove the fuel pump in the tight confines of the car with the fuel tank still installed or removing the tank with residual fuel.

39 Other Fuel System Pump problem of the 2015 Hyundai Sonata

Failure Date: 04/03/2016

Driving at 75mph on I-77 northbound near charlotte, (lake norman) when suddenly the engine died. Traffic was heavy but thankfully I was able to coast to a narrow shoulder. Cars were coming within 2 feet of my car so my wife and I exited the vehicle and ran up an embankment to get out of harms way. Police and a tow truck arrived and took the car to lake norman Hyundai where a faulty fuel pump was diagnosed. The repair took two days since the part had to be ordered. The incident was harrowing and could have been tragic for both of us. The car was a little over one year old with just over 15,000 miles. Hyundai motors has been contacted but I get nowhere with the company. I am now concerned about the possibility of this recurring to my vehicle or someone else.

41 Other Fuel System Pump problem of the 2015 Hyundai Sonata

Failure Date: 11/02/2015

On 3 separate occassons the vehicle was on a major street when it just died. The first time was comng out of a stop at a red light, the second just when I was driving and the third time whle I was deaccelarating. Miraculalously I was able to use the last bit of momentum and pull over. The car started up again each tme. The dealer had no suggestions the first 2 times except for possble computer misfire. They released the car staitng it should be fine and they could not replcate the event. After starting a case with Hyundai they decided to replace the ignition coils and then the fuel pump. After much questioningand little cooperaion from Hyundai or the dealer, I was told that 1500 people reprted the same life threatenening event onn thier car. Not enough for a recall!!!someone is going to get killed. Neither the dealer or Hyundai thinks this is an issue. Case number 8479377. I have never received a call from the case engineer from Hyundai explaining any repairs as promised. Hyundai is unresponsive. The service manager is mike dsantis MD isalnd Hyundai centeeach ny631 580 0800.

42 Other Fuel System Pump problem of the 2012 Hyundai Sonata

Failure Date: 11/02/2015

Boyfriend's vehicle. Check engine light came on and the code p0087 was noted by the obdii (fuel rail pressure low) mechanic originally stated that this was an "intermittent" problem and the whole system would have to be replaced at + $1200. This didn't make sense to him so he asked to be shown exactly where the problem was located, and what part was causing the problem. The mechanic could not give him an answer. "it's around this area" he replied as he waved across the center of car. He went to another mechanic and another after that. Only consistency has been the lack of know how to fix this problem. In the meantime, his oil is thickening and darkening, and his fuel is not giving him the mileage it should. It seems the only assistance anyone wants to give revolves around replacing the whole system, yet the servicemen themselves admit that they are uncertain that this avenue for repair is necessary. None of them can offer us a repair or replacement of the sensor itself. Finally, one mechanic advised us that under the p0087 error code the following could be causing the engine light to come 1. Weak fuel pump, clogged filter or screen, restricted fuel supply line 2. Faulty fuel pump driver module 3. Faulty fuel pressure sensor. Unfortunately, this mechanic is a student and not certified to perform repairs. I verified his opinion thru obdcodes. Com but was quickly disillusioned because again, no one is willing to check these causes individually. Finally my boyfriend was told to just buy a can of air spray to blow out any surrounding dust and then just let him 'reset' the check engine light and see how long it stays off. I know that this is wrong and have found a repair guide finally. But,I also now find service bulletin no. : TSB-15-01-010 component(s): engine NHTSA id number: 10058132 that seems to be about this issue. How do we resolve this problem already?.

43 Other Fuel System Pump problem of the 2010 Hyundai Sonata

Failure Date: 09/14/2015

I was traveling on the beltway doing 65 mph, I pressed on the gas petal. I felt I was losing speed. I notice the speednometor decelerating down to 40mph while I was pressing the gas pedal. I put on my hazard lights pulled to the side of the road. I was concerned because no warning light came on, to notified me there was a problem with the vehicle. I took my car to the dealership, it was diagnosis as problem with my fuel pump. I check with Hyundai they said, the fuel pump does not have a warning light. My concern if some type of warning light should have appeard on the dashboard before I started the car. I would have not drove the car if the warning light was on, I would have took it to the dealership. I felt this was a safety issue because someone could have rear end me on the beltway, due to the sudden drop in speed. I have enjoyed my car so far, but I was disappointed regarding this incident. I have a son who drives my car, I am worried about his safety and the safety of others. I was assigned a case number with Hyundai 8216379. However, I spoke with a case manager joseph who said it was not much they could do. I wanted to have a record on file regarding this compliant, and to see if it could be investigated. Thank you.

44 Other Fuel System Pump problem of the 2011 Hyundai Sonata

Failure Date: 06/01/2015

Fuel gauge and fuel pump sending unit. Safety issue with the fuel gauge as it will not accurately show fuel level and will sometimes show empty because of a faulty fuel pump sending unit. The warranty on this vehicle should be extended to repair this safety issue. This started approximately two years ago and has gotten progressively worse.

45 Other Fuel System Pump problem of the 2011 Hyundai Sonata

Failure Date: 12/14/2014

The fuel pump module has high resistance at the connector and burned a hole through it. Connector burned* that should not have happened, this could have caused an explosion or a fire to start. . . This is not normal wear and tear and is a safety hazard. . . . The part was manufactured wrong and should not have worn out. We are thankful that we are still alive.

46 Other Fuel System Pump problem of the 2003 Hyundai Sonata

Failure Date: 11/03/2014

Tl- the contact owns a 2003 Hyundai Sonata. The contact stated that gasoline will spill out of her vehicle while refueling. The vehicle was taken to the dealer for diagnostic testing. 47 Other Fuel System Pump problem of the 2012 Hyundai Sonata

Failure Date: 10/17/2014

I had a check engine light on my vehicle and it revealed an issue with the high pressure fuel pump which is located in the engine area. This is not something that should go out that quickly. Apparently this is a common issue with this vehicle and they need to recall these.

48 Other Fuel System Pump problem of the 2009 Hyundai Sonata

Failure Date: 09/10/2014

The car would crank but not start. Had this same problem about a month ago, the car finally started after sitting awhile. This time when it happened I could not hear the fuel pump run. I determined the fuel pump was not working. When I went to remove the fuel pump I discovered the actual problem was a defective electrical connection inside the fuel tank. The plastic terminal protection inside the tank was burned through and the terminal melted. This is a very serious condition as it was inside the tank exposed to the fuel, and could have caused a fire or explosion.

49 Other Fuel System Pump problem of the 2006 Hyundai Sonata

Failure Date: 05/26/2014

Fuel pump failed when starting the vehicle. The repair shop has reported scorch marks on the fuel pump assembly, and a melted/fused screen. He tells me that the failure/short could have caused an explosion.

50 Other Fuel System Pump problem of the 2007 Hyundai Sonata

Failure Date: 11/12/2013

Addendum to initial complaint 11-15-13 NHTSA id# 10552462 perhaps I did not communicate in detail,my concern was not replacing the fuel pump,it was the fire hazard that was alarming-it was the electrical connector module, top of the fuel pump,it burnt into the f/p and could have ignited, the service mechanic was shocked that I did not have a fire,I was told that another manufacturer had the same problem and put recalls on their vehicles due to this fire hazard. . . . . My intention was to bring attention to the safety department to prevent other vehicle owners from this possible fire hazard.

Driving from bakersfield, CA to auburn, CA on 12-20-12. Filled with fuel about 15 miles before auburn. Parked in auburn, car would not start about 3 hrs later. Towed to garage on 12-21-12, started at garage, could find no problems. Drove from barstow, CA to payson, az on 12-27-12. Would not start next morning. Mechanic came on 12-30-12, car started. Had mechanic come on 1-16-13 to check fuel pump. Started to replace the electric fuel pump, found that the power connector from the pump to the connector at the top of the fuel tank had burnt, corroded. Discolored connections. This is inside the fuel tank! have had to order a new pump assembly from Hyundai. Don't if it is an upgraded part.

53 Other Fuel System Pump problem of the 2007 Hyundai Sonata

55 Other Fuel System Pump problem of the 2011 Hyundai Sonata

Failure Date: 06/19/2010

1) within three months of buying this car, starting issues began. Generally on the second start of the day. First start of the day usually involves high engine revving somewhere in the neighborhood of 2,500 rpm. After a short trip, ignition will no click over attempt to restart. Usually second or third try result in a start. Despite dealer replacement of starter, fuel pump and battery, the problem continues periodically. 2) rear brakes needed replacement at 24k miles. Wear was uneven: left brake was grinding into rotor and right brake was only about 50 percent worn. Had dealership check for possible faulty calipers, but they claimed they found no issues and would not cover under warranty. In contrast, the car still has the original front brakes.
