The mdps (motor driven power steering) assembly contains a flexible rubber coupling which may wear over time resulting in a slight clicking or thud type noise when turning the steering wheel. This together with the huge amount of dead play makes the vehicle unsafe. There's a recall/extended warranty from Hyundai USA for this same exact issue for other models with the exact same issue, but not for this one.

Continual play and clunking noise in steering wheel when turning. Coupler damaged in steering motor.
The Veloster is a 2012 with only 19k miles. Recently it has started making a clunking noise when turning the steering wheel left or right and there is excessive vibration when driving in a straight line. Hyundai states that this is not a safety issue, however, the majority of sources online say that this is caused by a failed steering coupler (a k a. Steering dampener) and this can cause the wheel to lock up while driving. Hyundai has recalled this issue on the sonata and the elantra but refuses to do anything for Veloster owners. The part can be purchased online from the oem for roughly $6 but the dealer from which I purchased the vehicle is asking $400 to fix this issue. Forums on line will show a great number of Veloster owners dealing with this same issue and cost to fix this problem. I truly feel as though Hyundai has admitted fault and a safety concern by recalling other vehicles for the exact issue but they still refuse to fix the Veloster. I called and spoke with a Hyundai USA representative this afternoon who says that it's up to the dealer to decide if it's covered under their standard warranty or not and that I should have purchased the extended warranty if I wanted this fixed. As he knew exactly what I was talking about it goes to show that I am not the only Veloster owner dealing with this problem. This issue needs to be fixed at the expense of Hyundai.
I have a lunk noise and play in my steering wheel though it needed a alingment but was told it was a steering coupling. Sonta and elantra has a recall on the same issue its the same $1. 88 part that is failing in the other Hyundai cars and they have a recall but not the Veloster well if its the same part then it is a defective part recall it. This is safety concern guess they waiting for someone to get hurt before its recalled OH by the way its $388. Roughly the dealership said to fix it for a $1. 88 rubber piece go figure. I purchased this 2012 Veloster off the showroom floor I am the only owner.
The plastic steering coupler has broken and is causing a clunking noise in the steering column. This is the same part that was recalled on the sonata and elantra but it is not covered under warranty because it is a Veloster. The vehicle had just 50,000 miles and the part has failed. The dealer knew exactly what the problem was and said this was a common issue.
There is a clicking noise when the steering wheel is turned. First happen while stationary. It is now occurring in motion.
There is a steering clunking noise as well as a "dead spot" in the steering wheel motion. There is a loss of control of the actual wheels while the steering wheel is at the center posistion. You can rock the steering wheel back and forth from center and the wheels will not turn. This is a known problem for Hyundais, and Hyundai has extended its warranty to their other models but have excluded the Veloster for no reason. This is a ~$400 fix at the dealer ship for a known defective part. Total scam.
Steering wheel when stationary makes a clunking noise when turning left to right at the steering column. When driving it feels loose and also makes a clunking noise when steering on the road, when reaching higher speeds on the highway it would vibrate the steering wheel. I stoped by a local auto mechanic and he told me that Hyundai's have this problem and I should take back to dealership to have fixed. He told me it was the steering coupler. I purchase 2 Hyundai Veloster in 2014 and both vehicles have now had this replaced both under 35,000 miles. But this one was out of warranty when it happened but was under 35,000 miles. This shouldn't be happening at this milage.
My car like many others have had an issue with the coupler going bad in the steering wheel. Mine started at around 85,000 miles and I was told by the dealership there may be a bulletin on it. The steering wheel makes noise when turning it and has about 2 inches of play.
Clacking noise within steering wheel (defective coupler) vehicle makes noise while in motion during any traffic situation and including turning.
Tl- the contact owns a 2012 Hyundai Veloster. The contact stated that a clicking noise occurred while driving that was coming from the steering. In addition, the contact stated that there was also a lot of movement in the steering. There was no warning indicator lights illuminated. The vehicle was taken to key Hyundai dealer, located at 4660 southside blvd #100, jacksonville, FL 32216, (904) 642-6060 , where it was diagnosed that the mdps coupler replacement for noise on steering column needed. The vehicle was not repaired due to the repaired fees. The manufacturer was notified of the failure but did not offer further assistance. The approximate failure mileage was 56,000. Aw.
