1 Gasoline Fuel System problem

Failure Date: 06/15/2016

The contact owns a 2003 Infiniti M45. The contact stated that on several occasions, while driving at various speeds, the gas gauge did not read the fuel level correctly and the vehicle stalled. The vehicle was towed several times to a dealer and independent mechanic where the fuel gauge sensor could not be replaced. Additionally, on one occasion, the vehicle was steered to the side of the road where the vehicle was refueled. The vehicle was restarted but the failure persisted. The vehicle was then taken to a dealer where it was diagnosed that the field filter needed to be replaced and the field gage sensor needed to be cleaned. The vehicle was repaired but the failure reoccurred. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 160,000.

2 Gasoline Fuel System problem

Failure Date: 04/16/2012

I'm sincerely with no recourse to fixing what is wrong with my car since it has been purchased. I bought the vehicle in 2007 and the very day I bought the vehicle, it ran out of gas even though the fuel gauge cluster showed it was half full. I took it back to the dealership and they "fixed" it. I then found out there was a recall and I went back to my dealership because my fuel gauge still does not work properly and my wife and my one year old ran out of gas again a week ago on the highway. The dealership continues to state there isn't a recall for fuel gauge issues, but I believe there should be. Please help as they are seeking close $1500 to fix the issue.

3 Gasoline Fuel System problem

Failure Date: 02/14/2012

My car stalled while I was driving. My gas gauge was reading at 3/4 when it was actually empty. I had to call my husband who eventually found out about the problem. Good thing I was not in the freeway or I would have caused a big traffic or an accident.

2003 Infiniti M45. Consumer states gas gauge was giving erratic readings the consumer stated he ran out of gas with no warning from the gas gauge or low fuel indicator. Apparently, a service bulletin was issued regarding faulty indicators and the vehicle was repaired free of charge. However, about 16 months ago, the consumer noticed the gas gauge was once again providing erratic readings. Two dealers informed the consumer that since the gauge was previously repaired under the service bulletin, that he would not be eligible for a complimentary repair again. My 2003 Infiniti M45 stopped running while I was driving 65 mph down the highway. Lucklily I was able to manuever off to the side of the road. The car restarted immediately, but since the incident my fuel gauge no longer works.

8 Gasoline Fuel System problem

Failure Date: 11/04/2011

I had just purchased the car and when I left the lot around November 1st, 2011 at 95k miles , I went 10 miles home to my place, then 10 additionall miles to my mothers place to show them the car. They got to see that it died in her apartments when the gas guage read that it was full. We tried to jump the car, but we discovered that it was out of gas and had someone with a gas can to help us. The referred me to a shop after the incident thats not even apart of the bbb and not certified and they didnt even want to look at the car. They wanted me to help them find the part but the car is under warranty. I'm still dealing with this issue and I hope you all can help me resolve this issue.

9 Gasoline Fuel System problem

Failure Date: 10/21/2011

I bought a 2003 Infiniti M45 from a private lot, and the gas gauge showed full. I drove this vehicle about 20 miles that day and it died on the street while I was driving through my residence. Couldn't figure it out until we smelled gas so I had to have someone to bring me gas in a gas can and the car started right up. The private lot didn't want to do anything about it since I drove it off the lot that day.

10 Gasoline Fuel System problem

Failure Date: 09/14/2011

The fuel gauge no longer works correctly. I ran out of gas in the middle of the street and was nearly rear ended several times before I was able to move the vehicle off the street. My wife, children, myself and other drivers were all put in harm's way due to this faulty issue. From reading the forums, this error on Nissan's part is plaguing many of these vehicles and will eventually affect them all. Please consider that this model M45 was sold in the us for only two model years (2003, 2004). The combined sales for these vehicles from 2002-2004 was only 7,855 before they abandoned the y34 platform and went to the new y50 platform. So the number of complaints will not be that of a Toyota camry. From what I gather on this website, at least 1% of all 03/04 M45 owners have filed a complaint with NHTSA. There are hundreds of others that have this issue but have not filed a complaint. This is one of the most discussed topics in the Infiniti owners forums. My vehicle is now showing two error codes on the obd-ii readout: p1444 (evap canister purge volume control solenoid valve) and p0462 (fuel level sensor). From what I understand, some people have had the fuel level sensor replaced by Infiniti, but this does not fix the issue. Others have had their instrument cluster sent off and replaced by a third party to repair Nissan's faulty factory soldering. This is the cause for the fuel gauge not working and for the error codes. Please consider this information and that of the other complaints to have Nissan issue a recall to fix this fuel gauge issue. Thank you.

11 Gasoline Fuel System problem

Failure Date: 09/05/2011

On the labor day in this year (2011), my 2003 M45 had been stopped in middle of the I-75. The fuel gauge was around 1/4. While I was driving aroud 65 mph on the passing lane, the car lost its power and then stopped. There was not time to pull over to an emergency lane. Follwing cars barely passed my car. It was the most scary moment in my life. About 3 minute later, a police arrived and then I could escape the situation. After the car was towed nearest a shop, it turns out that gas was empty. Then I found out that it is the common problem on this vehicle. The hundres of owner are suffering from this issue but Infiniti ignores to fix this.

12 Gasoline Fuel System problem

Failure Date: 08/04/2011

Faulty gas gauge readings and check engine light with code 0462. Troubleshooting revealed no +12 v from instrument cluster (combination meter) to fuel level sensor. No opens or shorts in wiring harness. All points to a defective gauge cluster.

13 Gasoline Fuel System problem

Failure Date: 07/24/2011

I purchased the Infiniti 2003 M45 before I knew about the fuel gauge problem. The shop I use has ordered 3 oem gauge clusters from Infiniti all three would not work. With all the complaints and the safety issues why does Infiniti refuse to fix this problem. It is a real surprise that a problem from 2003 still can not be fixed eight years later. This issue needs investigation and Infiniti needs to be held responsiable for all repairs in other words recall.

14 Gasoline Fuel System problem

Failure Date: 05/15/2011

Fuel gauge stops at half full, and returns toward full until running out of gas. There are two low gas warnings (light and message) which no longer work. After several months of using odometer for approximate gas amount status, the check engine light illuminated. The auto zone code check shows the fuel level sender is faulty. Turns out this a a common problem for this make and model, and many fixes (sender unit and gauge cluster) do not work.

15 Gasoline Fuel System problem

Failure Date: 01/03/2011

The fuel guage stopped indicating the correct fuel level which left me stranded on a dangerous highway when I ran out of fuel.

16 Gasoline Fuel System problem

Failure Date: 10/01/2010

Fuel gauge level indicator stays at much higher level than is actually present. Mostly stays at full reading, but sometimes goes to half level when in actuality the fuel level is close to empty. For the most part, it stays at full level indication and sometimes causes an intermittent "service engine soon" light to appear on the dash cluster assembly. After having the obd2 error code read, it states that the fuel sending unit is faulty, however after having it tested, the fuel sending unit is working within normal specifications. After much research, it is believed that the fuel gauge itself is faulty and a replacement of the cluster assembly is recommended to remedy this specific issue. When this first happened, I almost ran out of fuel on the freeway. I felt power loss while cruising at highway speeds. Fortunately, there was a gas station coming up at the closest oncoming exit and I was able to make it in and refuel. That is when I discovered that I had an issue with this fuel gauge and decided to research this. I have found this has been a problem for many owners of this specific Infiniti model vehicle.

17 Gasoline Fuel System problem

Failure Date: 07/13/2010

The fuel gauge stopped accurately indicating the amount of fuel in the vehicle. Subsequently the car ran out of fuel while driving on local road causing disruption in traffic before it could be moved to the shoulder. After a cursory check to see if anything looked to be amiss, we decided to start with the simple solutions and work toward the more complex. We added 5 gallons of gas to the car and it immediately cranked and ran fine. This is when we noticed that the gas gauge failed to move. The gauge showed to be about 1/2 full before we added fuel and didn't move after adding the fuel. The fuel indicator has now moved to past full and hasn't moved since. We had an Infiniti dealer look at the car and they gave us an estimate of $1502. 00 to make the repairs. The malfunctioned occurred at or near 72,000 miles, well after the warranty period. Reviewing information on the internet shows that this appears to be a rather common occurence for this year/model. Often this was repaired by Infiniti in cars that were still in the warranty period. 21 Gasoline Fuel System problem

Failure Date: 12/01/2009

I first incurred a fuel gauge issue with my 2003 infinity M45 sedan around approximately December 2009. My mother was driving the car at the time of first incident and the fuel gauge had read full. On her way to work she ran out of gas which caused an engine failure. As a result, she was stranded on the side of a major highway. Upon taking the car to a local infinity dealership they were almost instantly able to diagnose the problem as a faulty instrument gauge cluster. I was told the part alone was around $900 and after labor, it would be over $1000 to fix. My online research has proven that this is a very common problem and several third party companies have begun offering repair services for this specific issue. I have come into contact with well over 20 03-04 infinity M45 owners who have the same issue. Some owners have experienced this problem with as few as 20,000 miles. It is an issue that infinity is aware of, but it is my opinion that they choose not to recall the issue when they can make an extra $1000 off replacing the instrument cluster. I was made aware that the issue was no under investigation. There are only around an estimated 8100 03-04 M45s currently still in use. As a result, our voice is not heard very loudly even though the problem is extremely common in these vehicles. I am more than willing to offer any further information on my personal experience with the matter.

22 Gasoline Fuel System problem

Failure Date: 09/25/2009

Fuil gauge does not show correct amount of fuel resulting in running out of gas. I have been dealing with the problem for almost 2 years. Now the service engine light came up and the issue requires fixing in order to pass emission control. This is well known problem, but Infiniti refuses fixing it.

23 Gasoline Fuel System problem

Fuel gauge failure which could cause a problem if in heavy traffic.

24 Gasoline Fuel System problem

Failure Date: 10/20/2008

The contact owns a 2003 Infiniti M45. The contact stated that the fuel gauge would register either a full or empty reading. The vehicle was taken to a repair shop where the contact was informed that the fuel sending unit needed to be replaced; the mechanic stated that the failure would continue to occur whether it was repaired or not. The vehicle was repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 50,000 and the current mileage was approximately 100,000.

25 Gasoline Fuel System problem

Failure Date: 04/26/2004

The contact owns a 2003 Infiniti M45. On approximately nine occasions, the vehicle would completely shut off and sometimes would not restart. The vehicle had to be towed to the dealer approximately four times. They stated that the failure could be caused by the shift lock or the fuel system, but there was no resolution. The current mileage was 50,300 and failure mileage was 5,000.

26 Gasoline Fuel System problem

Failure Date: 07/01/2003

Fuel gauge showing wrong level of gas. Had fuel sending unit replaced twice still not working. Now they tell me I have to replace the gauge cluster. This will cost over $2000. 00. This is a known defect and there should be a recall on this before somebody gets killed, or is Infiniti waiting for someone to get killed before they do the recall?.
