1 Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 03/30/2012

My gas gauge shows incorrect readings, I have to go by gallons of gas I put in to car to determine miles I can drive. When I start the car gauge shows one reading a few blocks later it shows another. My car stopped some weeks ago on busy street when gauge showed a 1/4 of a tank on the gauge, I had to call roadside service to get home.

2 Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 03/10/2012

The car stalled when I was driving on 880 freeway left lane. Luckily I succeeded to steer the car through the lanes to the right curb. When I looked at the fuel gauge (asked by police officer that stopped by), it showed slightly more than one quarter. The car was towed to frontier Infiniti dealership in santa clara. The dealership checked the car and claims that the gas tank was empty. So it looks like the fuel gauge was not indicating correctly. No repair action was taken.

3 Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 02/07/2012

Even though fuel gauge shows a full tank of gas the tank was actually empty and I ran out of gas. This was very inconvenient but more importantly could have been very dangerous for every passenger in the car, had I been on the freeway or other roads traveling at a high rate of speed to suddenly be out of gas. One other related issue is the engine service light. Tried to get the vehicle smogged but was told that a few codes came up on the meter. One was camshaft position sensor. One other one showed the fuel sending unit/sensor to be faulty. In regards to this issue, it would seem that just replacing the sending unit may not be a guarantee that the fuel gauge will properly function. Car can not be smogged without these items corrected at high cost. These issues need to be addressed properly from the Infiniti/Nissan company. Thank you.

4 Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 01/24/2012

Wife had just reached 65mph on highway when engine died. Fuel gauge indicated 1/2 tank. I had heard that fuel gauge failures are common on this vehicle, so I came with a gas can and added 2gal. Car started without problem and was driven to nearest gas station to fill the tank. Car continues to run without incident since running out of gas. I now reset the trip odometer with each fill up, and refill before reaching 300 miles on a tank. Was told by Infiniti dealer that entire instrument cluster would need to be replaced, at a cost of approx. $1200.

5 Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 01/20/2012

Engine stalling occurred when the car ran out of fuel, despite the gauge indicating the presence of gasoline in the tank.

6 Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 01/13/2012

The contact owns a 2003 Infiniti M45. The contact was driving 60 mph when the vehicle ran out of fuel despite the fuel gauge reading that the tank was full. The vehicle was not taken to the dealer. The manufacturer was not notified. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 134,000 and the current mileage was 137,000.

7 Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 01/02/2012

I was driving my 2003 Infiniti M45 on or around Jan, 2, 2012 at 65mph. Suddenly the car started jerking heavily and my power steering went off making the car really hard to steer. I looked at the dash and saw no warning msgs come on and the fuel gauge showed half a tank. I carefully pulled my car to the shoulder. I tried a few time to re-start the car with no luck. I finally had it towed to a repair shop who later called to tell me it was out of gas. Not only did I feel stupid I was upset as I heard this was a notorious problem with the M45. I was in disbelief that this actually happened to me. I love the car, but this problem needs to be fixed by Infiniti!.

8 Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 12/27/2011

As I was driving hike after work on 95 south my Infiniti all of a sudden shut off while I was on the middle lane on the highway, I manages to let it ride over and get to the emergency lane before the car came to a complete stop, I did not know what was the issue until I had it towed to my mechanic and he told me that the car had no fuel, I did not understand because the gauge read a quater tank, after doing some research and getting my car scanned for the check engine light that is now on beause of it, I found out that this model m 2003-2004 all have the same issue with the gas gauge (instrument cluster).

9 Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 12/16/2011

Approximately 3 weeks ago I was driving my car and all of a sudden it stopped in the middle of a busy road and wouldn't start. It appeared to be a fuel problem but the gas gauge was showing over a quarter tank full. I had to tow it to a mechanic and then tow it again to the dealership. The dealership diagnostic was a faulty gas gauge and was recommending to replace the whole cluster, a very expensive proposition. As I was researching the issue it became apparent that this is a common problem with hundreds if not thousands of complaints. Apparently, the faulty item should have been recalled but Infiniti decided not to do the right thing as it would be too expensive to recall the faulty item while they could make more money by just replacing them and charging the consumers hundreds of dollars. Not to mention the incidental costs inconveniences and dangers that consumers had to face.

10 Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 10/05/2011

I know there are numerous complaints on fuel gauge issues with the 03-04 M45. My car now has 87k and has had this issue since around 73k miles. Once it gets down to 1/4 tank, it will sometimes go to e and turn the light on or go back and forth between 1/4 and 1/2 tank marks. I know the qx56 had a recall for the sending unit but the gauge clusters are the issue with these cars. I'm hoping Infiniti will provide some help since this is quite a big concern for every driver. Thank you.

11 Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 08/08/2011

The contact owns a 2003 Infiniti M45. While driving approximately 35 mph, the vehicle stalled without warning. The contact inspected the vehicle and stated that the vehicle had run out of fuel but the fuel gauge indicated that the fuel tank was full. The vehicle was not taken to the dealer for diagnostics or repairs. The approximate failure mileage was 101,000.

12 Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 07/14/2011

For the past year I have been having a issue with the fuel gauge on my 2003 Infiniti M45. First I noticed the problem while driving when my fuel reading was at 1/4 tank and the gauge started to rise to a full tank. I did not like what was happening so I promptly went and put gas in the car to fill the tank. After a day or two of city driving in chicago there was no change to my fuel reading. I wasn't until 3 weeks ago I was on the dan ryan express way when the problem really scared me. I was driving and my car started to sputter when I noticed that my fuel reading was still at 3/4 full. It shut off completely in high speed traffic and there was no fuel in the tank. The minute man just happened to be coming and saw me and gave me a gallon of gas. I was fortunate that I was able to get to the shoulder without causing any serious to fatal incident. This should be a factory recall because it's absolutely to many Infiniti m cars on the road with this issue. From my perspective, it will get addressed when there's a fatal accident where someone is rear ended due to this malfunction. Please address this problem. Thank you.

13 Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 06/30/2011

I was driving my 2003 Infiniti M45 on or around June 30, 2011 at 65mph on highway 290 near the wolf rd exit in chicago. All of a sudden while I was in the left lane, my car started jerking heavily and my power steering went off making the car really hard to steer. I looked at the dash and saw no warning msgs come on. . . . I carefully veered my car through heavy traffic towards the right lane and shoulder and I barely missed a truck coming in the far right lane! as I got to the shoulder and caught my bearings and was about to call an emergency tow truck a cop came and asked what happened. I explained it to him and he said maybe you need some gas? I looked at my dash and my fuel gauge still showed almost half a tank available but I took his advice. He took me to the closest gas station to get gas, we went back and filled the car and started the car which started fine now! I was in disbelief that my fuel gauge was broken and it almost got me into a heavy accident that might have severely injured me!! since then, my fuel gauge has not come back to normal and I don't have the extra money needed to fix it as I do believe its Infiniti/Nissan's job to fix it!!.

14 Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 06/12/2011

The contact owns a 2003 Infiniti M45. The contact stated the fuel gauge was providing inaccurate fuel level readings. While driving, the vehicle ran out of fuel and stalled without warning, although the fuel level gauge indicated that there was one quarter tank of fuel. The vehicle was not inspected. The failure mileage and current mileage was 58,000.

15 Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 06/01/2011

The car stopped in the middle of the street because it was out of gas, but the indicator was showing about 40% of a full gas tank. There was no "low fuel" warning before the car ran out of gas. This is the second time the fuel indicator failed; the same problem was repaired 2 or 3 years ago.

16 Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 03/24/2011

The fuel gauge does not accurately reflect actual fuel level. It reads full 100% of the time regardless of how much fuel is actually in the tank.

17 Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 02/04/2011

2003 Infiniti M45, vehicle stalled in highway traffic on 2 separate occasions due to low fuel. Fuel gauge and electronic fuel monitoring system both showed over 1/2 tank of fuel on both occasions. I narrowly missed being rear ended in one instance and t-boned on another as I tried to merge onto uncoming traffic. Fuel gauge cluster and fuel sensor need replacing.

18 Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 01/20/2011

The fuel gauge read full and I ran out of gas on the highway, fortunately I was in the right lane and avoided an accident. I filled the tank up and the next day the engine light came on and the car kept cutting off while I was driving home from work. I got to a gas station and the tank was 3/4 full. I took the car to the dealer who told me I had failed timing sensors which they replaced for $705. 04. One hour after leaving the dealer the engine light came on again. I took the car back and they said they just needed to clear the codes. The next day the engine light came on again. I went to a private station and was told I had a dtc code p0462 and this was a known problem with this vehicle with the only fix being to replace the entire gauge cluster. I did not have the money at the time to have this corrected. I now have to be inspected and have no choice.

19 Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 11/12/2010

The contact owns a 2003 Infiniti M45. The contact noticed that the fuel gauge indicated that the fuel tank was full at all times. The vehicle was taken to a local repair shop where the fuel sending unit was replaced. The failure continued. The failure mileage was approximately 70,000 and the current mileage was approximately 100,000.

20 Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 08/21/2010

2003 infinity M45 gas gauge keeps showing faulty reading to the extent engine cuts off on the highway and car came to abrupt stop while in motion. Car shows full or 1/2 tank when it is actually empty.

21 Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 08/02/2010

Gas gauge has faulty readings. Consistently reads 3/4 to full when in actuality actual level is approaching empty. After fill-up gauge reads full but status does not track with actual gas in fuel tank.

22 Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 05/21/2010

First incident, gauge level states tank full, ran out of gas in the middle of the street. Second incident, gauge states full and car shut off.

23 Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 04/24/2010

Purchased 2003 Infiniti M45 with 104k miles at Volvo of houston, TX and drove back to austin, TX. The fuel gauge read more that half a tank in the car, but was in fact closer to empty. While driving car ran out of gas on a main thorough fare had to call aaa roadside assistance for towing to local autorepair shop. In the past year have learned that this is a common problem the Nissan corp refuses to recall.

24 Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 03/21/2010

There seems to be a gas gauge issues with my2003 Infiniti M45. I was on the highway at about 65 miles per hour when the car engine stopped and that car became non responsive. I was barely able to pull over to the far right hand lane without the car's power steering. The gas gauge read full but the tank was actually empty. I was lucky to have avoided a collision. After reading several posts I have come to find that this is a known Nissan/ Infiniti issue. Why has there not been a recall been placed on the nissans but no the Infiniti's?.

25 Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 01/03/2010

I purchased my 2003 M45 used from a private party at around 90k. A short time after I purchased it, while driving in heavy morning atlanta traffic, my car ran out of gas and left me stranded on the side of the highway. I realized that the gas gauge indicated I had a full tank of gas when in fact my car had completely run out of gas. I realized I had a problem. I took to my car to a mechanic that specializes in Infiniti's. The gas gauge repair bill was going to be more than I could pay to fix it. To keep track of my gas needs, I just started using the trip odometer (mileage indicator. ) I fill up at the tank after driving 250 miles. I then zero out the counter and repeat the process. Last month the engine check light came on at 102k. I took back to my mechanic and he said it was the fuel sensor needing to be fixed. I have no idea why it took over 18 months to come on. My birthday is in January so I had to have my emissions done. I failed due to fuel level sensor circuit low input. I cannot afford to get this fixed. I also cannot afford not having an updated tag. I called the dealer twice after explaining problem with no call back. I called Infiniti customer service and was told there was nothing they could do.

26 Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 06/13/2009

Malfunctioning fuel gauge. Began as gauge never reading below half tank, and then escalated to continuous full reading.

27 Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 04/16/2009

The fuel gauge measured more than 1/2 a tank and the car ran out of gas. Fortunately, I was able to coast to a stop in a safe area. The fuel gauge has continued to malfunction.

28 Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 03/05/2009

The fuel gauge on my 2003 Infiniti M45 is defective. It began to occur at 101,000 miles intermittently, but now is a constant problem. The fuel gauge correctly reads the tank level until about 1/2 tank at which point it severely drops, or severely rises to "full". I know this to be a problem with this particular model in the fuel gauge cluster, and tried to have it fixed at the dealer. They did not fix it under warranty, and said there was no recall, however they recognized many other owners had the same issue. Other owners have said the only way to correct the problem is to completely replace the gauge cluster, however, I will not pay for a defective part at that price, so I have been keeping track of mileage in order to time fill-ups. The danger lies in the fact that the fuel light will not come on, and the tank will read above half-full when the tank is close to empty. There is severe risk of running out of gas on the highway and causing an accident.

29 Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 03/01/2009

The contact owns a 2003 infinity M45. On March 1, 2009, while the contact was driving at approximately 70 mph, the vehicle suddenly stalled and he had to pull over to avoid a crash. When he checked the fuel gauge, it indicated that the vehicle was â¼ full with fuel but the vehicle was out of gas. The fuel gauge would also show a full tank of gas when the tank was empty. The contact planned to take the vehicle to a local repair shop for a diagnostic test. The failure mileage was approximately 77,000. The current mileage was approximately 89,000.

30 Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 10/10/2008

Gas gauge failure on Infiniti m-45 2003 model. Gas gauge would read full - 3/4 full when the tank was below 1/4 tank. Would lead to running out of gas unless the gas was monitored by the number of miles between fill ups. This is a dangerous situation - owners potentially running out of gas when trying to cross an intersection pull out in traffic, etc.

31 Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 06/02/2008

The contact owns a 2003 Infiniti M45. The contact stated that the fuel gauge would provide erroneous fuel level readings. The contact mentioned that the vehicle stalled as a result of running out of fuel although the fuel gauge advised that the tank was full. The vehicle was taken to a local mechanic who verified the failure and advised that the instrument panel needed to replaced. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The VIN was not available. The failure mileage was 30,000 and the current mileage was 100,000.

32 Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 03/21/2008

I purchased my M45 from used car dealer and while driving home the car stalled during chicago rush hour traffic. The wrecker towed me back to dealership who asked if I ran out of gas - I thought not possible since the fuel gauge read 3/8. The dealership filled the gas tank and car started up. I was stranded a second time in rush hour traffic in residential area and this time my tank read 7/8. Check engine light is on (code p0462) due to low voltage level to the fuel level sensor due to faulty instrument cluster. Inaccurate fuel gauge readings could leave the driver and or their family in danger of being seriously or fatally injured in a rear-end accident if the car stalls on the interstate. Nissan Infiniti car owners club has identified no less than 50 other 2003-04 M45 car owners who have experienced this problem. Nissan north America is aware but refuses to correct the problem.

33 Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 03/18/2008

The contact owns a 2003 Infiniti M45. The contact stated the fuel level indicator would intermittently read that the fuel tank was full when it was not and often fluctuates back and forth from empty and full. The dealer advised that the fuel sending unit would need to be replaced. There were no recalls and the vehicle was no longer under warranty. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 38,417 and the current mileage was 55,521.
