2 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2002 Jaguar X-type

Failure Date: 02/10/2010

I bought my jag 2002 X-type used with 38,000 on it. But after a years ownership on 2/10/10 with about 50,000 on it while driving I experienced an engine deceleration and an error message came on the dashboard saying gearbox failure pulled over to the side of the road out of the way of traffic switched off car and put it back on put in drive but could not go over 30mph took it to Jaguar for a diagnostic was told needed transmission, fuel pump. And oilpan gasket cost almost 10,000 doll. Too expensive for me then took the car to the local CO they replace trans and everything on the diagnostic done by Jaguar for 118. 00. Get my car back after 2 mths driving car and same thing happens again a week after trans replacement gear box failure take it back after another month am told I have an electrical prob after 52,000 spent on parts and labor my car is still in the shop . I see that there are many X-type owners out there with the same prob Jaguar needs to come clean and step up to take responsability for this trans prob I am sure like me we all love our cars but not enough to keep spending thousands of dollars on a prob that cant be fixed!!!!!!.

3 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2002 Jaguar X-type

Failure Date: 03/01/2009

I purchased my 2002 Jaguar X-type in April 2002 new. It had surges, and stalls. I asked the service dept to add remarks, it once stopped in the highway right in front of a semi truck, with no warning. This was very shortly after I purchased the vehicle. Since I cashed in my company 401k and paid cash for the car, I kept trying to drive it and deal with the problems, and it has had very many. Now at just over 59,000 miles I have been told it needs a new transmission, water pump, vacuum leaks on the engine, and so on. The estimate for repairs is approximately the car's total blue book value. Again, just as I pulled out into traffic, gearbox fault error came on, and the car would barely crawl out of the way of incoming cars. Is there anything you can do to assist? based on numerous searches, Jaguar should have recalled this vehicle. It has a terrible safety history. I am a single parent with a son in college and now face adding to our home mortgage just to repair the car. I would take full responsibility for making an unwise purchase, however, Jaguar knows fully this vehicle is extremely defective. Thank you very much vehicle currently located at leith inc. 700 autopark blvd cary, nc 27511 919 469-2699.

5 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2002 Jaguar X-type

Failure Date: 01/16/2009

My car is a 2002 Jaguar X-type. My transmission went completely out Friday morning. Luckily, I was able to move it to the side of the road without being injured. My car only has 60,589 miles on it?! what cars transmission gives out at such low mileage? not forgetting the expense to replace it. The economy right now is not the best and 1 car for two working individuals is not an option. . . Can you help us? I want Jaguar to pay this. I did not purchase an extended warranty because with all my other cars I have never needed to. I take good care of my cars with oil changes, fluids topped off, new brakes and tires when needed??!! Jaguar wants to charge me $7,100 to replace this. I found a mechanic to put a used one in with 43,000 miles on it for half that but what guarantees do I have that one will not give out? this is supposed to be a luxury car???? thanks for your time and I look forward to hearing from you.

6 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2002 Jaguar X-type

Failure Date: 04/24/2008

I just bought a 2002 Jaguar X-type from the woodbridge auto auction in virginia two days ago. The transmission is giving me problems and needs to be replaced. I looked on-line for consumer complaints regarding the Jaguar's transmission and there are plenty. Jaguar should recall these cars and replace the transmissions. The japanese manufacturer currently making the transmissions for Jaguar are making unsafe transmissions. Its time for Jaguar to take responsibility for their product and recall these calls and replace these transmissions.

The contact owns a 2002 Jaguar X-type. The contact took the vehicle to the dealer because it would jerk. She suspected the cause of the failure was the transmission. The dealer replaced the transmission. While attempting to park the vehicle a day later, it spun out of control and the front driver side tire blew out. She notified the dealer. The vehicle jerked violently and almost crashed into an oncoming vehicle. Roadside assistance was called to take the vehicle back to the dealer. I would like to post a similar complaint to notify other consumers who owns a Jaguar X-type 2002. In August 29 2007, on my way to work the car wouldn't accelerate more that 30 miles per hour. I drove back home and I had the car towed to the nearest Jaguar dealership. I had to replace the transmission for a cost of $5,400 with 59,000 miles. The first 4 years, I made several visits to the dealer to fix an engine light problem, fuel leak, reported a squeaky sound coming from the brakes (@ 10,000 miles Jaguar told me I needed new brakes pads for a cost $1,200,). 13 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2002 Jaguar X-type

Failure Date: 07/10/2006

Automatic transmission began dropping gears, beginning with top gear, working its way down till the transmission would no longer pull the vehicle. After the first gear dropped, "gearbox fault" came up in the driver information display. After researching this matter, it appears that Jaguar has a serious defect with these transmissions, as most X-type transmissions fail at 50,000 miles. Jaguar (corporate) refused to reply to both verbal and written inquiries. Total cost new was $7,700 for replacement, rebuilt was $2,900. Jaguar obviously knows of the defect, as it was covered in their TSB's.

14 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2002 Jaguar X-type

When crossing a highway intersection the vehicle engaged into limpmode which caused the electrical system to shut down, and vehicle decelerated to 5 mph.

15 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2003 Jaguar X-type

Failure Date: 06/10/2004

Movement is difficult to predict. At 15 mph significant upshifting. Problem occurs in coasting at 20 mph down to 10 mph. As you decelerate car lurches into fisrt gear. Making brake distance impossible to predict. Causing accidents at traffic stopping points. Also significant lurching at 15mph, 40mph and then after 70mph. Car is an automatic and drives like a manual, is the primary concern and stopping distance is unpredictable. (transmission issue after three services in the first year) service secretary/manager argues that automobile is fine without test driving. Mechanic joined in test drive and quickly noted that a problem exists yet fix was only temporary.

16 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2004 Jaguar X-type

Failure Date: 05/29/2004

I signed a 36 month lease contract and took delivery of a 2004 Jaguar X-type from Jaguar of novi on 3/15/04. At approximately 6,700 miles/3 months, the car began to experience a problem where the vehicle, when traveling at speed, will go into safe mode which causes the car to lurch and surge until it can be driven to the shoulder to turn the vehicle off. Once restarted, the check engine light will come on but occasionally, will not stay on. The car was towed to Jaguar of novi where it was repaired subsequent to this initial repair the vehicle has been taken back to the dealership, mostly via a tow truck a total of 14 times for the identical problem all of which are fully covered by the manufacturer warranty. I have taken legal action at this point and have signed an agreement for settlement under the consumer lemon law. The reason I am filing my complaint is this: my vehicle poses a safety issue. Every time I am told by the dealership that my vehicle is repaired and ready to be picked up, I drive the car for 50 miles or less and the car goes into the safe mode and I am forced to abruptly get off the road or risk causing an accident. I continuously complained to the dealership, whose answer was, your vehicle is un-fixable. They state they can replace parts (which every time it is in, the parts list is numerous) but cannot pinpoint the problem, nor guarantee that the problem will not recur. At this point, I have picked up my vehicle, but am awaiting the date that Jaguar cars will take my car back and settle my case. I am requesting that the issue be investigated, since I feel that my safety is compromised and they knowingly release my vehicle un-repaired. Again, I am pursuing this case under the lemon law and would request that your investigation be performed in a manner that would not harm that case.

18 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2004 Jaguar X-type

Failure Date: 02/24/2004

Consumer's husband purchased a brand new vehicle, and has had nothing but problems with the vehicle. Consumer took vehicle to repair shop at least 3 times for a an engine problem. There was only 750 miles on the vehicle, and transmission had to be replaced. Consumer insisted that vehicle was only driven on week ends, and it was not being misused. First occurrence of problem in transmission arose when vehicle only has 710 miles on it, dealer said it was the computer reading a false code. At 750 miles, vehicle was towed to dealership due to engine stalling. Dealer told consumer that vehicle needed to have a new transmission. Consumer tried to speak with the owner of the dealership, but instead an assistant told the consumer that it's impossible to replace vehicle with new transmission. Also, the assistant said that in order for a new unit to be given to the consumer, the vehicle has to be declared as a lemon or have the same problem 4 times. Dealer also performed quality control inspection on vehicle to make sure that vehicle is safe to drive. When vehicle was given back to consumer, they discovered that the battery top cover was cracked and a loose hose was coming from the bottom and hanging. Consumer called dealer and had it repaired.

I pulled intp a slot on a parking deck. When I tried to change the gear to park the car lunged forward crashing into a retaining wall. It was pushing against the wall so hard I was afraid I would go through the wall or over the wall. I was on the second level of the deck. It then crashed into a concrete wall spun around and crashed the drivers door into a concrete piller it then straightened up and sped straight backward crashing into a 4 ft high wall where the engine cut off.

20 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2002 Jaguar X-type

Failure Date: 01/15/2003

On four separate occasions in the last five months, the car lost power and the "power train" warning light on the dash display came on. It appears to be related to the cruise control, since the failures occurred when engaging or re-engaging (after applying the brake or pressing on the accelerator) the cruise control. The failures seem to occur randomly and not every time the cruise control is used. The dealer has been unable to replicate the problem, but they have replaced the control computer and re-done a number of wiring harnesses. Even though the problem has not been replicated, the failure history is captured in the car's on-board computer.

21 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2002 Jaguar X-type

On 2 separate occasions, the consumer was unable to take the vehicle out of the park gear. The dealership replaced a switch when the problem first occurred. Also at 26,000 while driving all gauges on the dashboard suddenly went to zero. The dealership was unable to determined the cause of the problem.
