Engine stalled at 75 miles per hour on the highway. This happened as I was accelerating and climbing a hill - car just suddenly lost power. I was forced to pull over on the side of the road. The car was difficult to restart after the incident, but eventually started up again and returned to normal. No injuries or accidents, luckily, but I have been driving the car very carefully since the incident in order to avoid trouble. The car has not been serviced, but the cause of the defect is well-known among Jaguar owners and dealers. I have spoken with many other owners of the 1998 Xj8 who have complained of the same problem. The problem is well-documented by Jaguar, and yet no recall has been issued yet. The tendency of the car to stall at highway speeds is a potentially life-threatening defect. I hope you will consider taking action on this case immediately.
Always occurs at highway speeds, once at 60 mph, the engine will completely stall leaving you very dangerously stalled on interstate, have to drift over to emergency lane to restart engine.
The vehicles engine stalled without warning while driving at approximately 60 mph on a 4-lane limited access highway. The instrument panel display read engine stalled . My wife was driving and she was able to coast the car to the side of the road to a safe stop. Fortunately there was no other traffic in the immediate vicinity. The engine restarted once the ignition was turned off and back on. We have experienced similar intermittent stalling over the last year or so, but never at highway speeds. Last July (2003) a local Jaguar dealer replaced three (3) engine relays and declared the problem fixed, but it started re-occurring again within a few months. The car is currently in the shop having the problem looked at again. The initial response from the technician was that the same three engine relays are bad again, but I ask for a more thorough analysis of the problem to be performed& why are the relays going bad? our experience sounds similar to numerous other complaints (see list of ids below) logged on the NHTSA web site for our make, year and model (and other similar models). There are also many, many other reports of similar experiences on Jaguar-related bulletin boards all over the web. There are even indications that a recall might be pending, but I couldnt find any definitive information to verify that. The dealer service team doesnt have, or isnt willing to provide any information about any pending actions. Under the right condition, this failure could lead to disastrous consequences. 1998 Jaguar Xj8 engine stalled on interstate while driving in middle lane. Had to pull over on edge on road. Vehicle had to sit a while before starting again. Has happened several times in residential areas. Ford will not admit to having a problem. I understand this is happening all over. Ford motor company, Jaguar division needs to be investigated and recalls needs to be issued before someone is killed. Thanks.
Engine stalls at highway speeds with no advance warning. Power steering and power brakes are therefore also inoperable. Vehicle must be coasted in this condition to a stop and put in "park" before it will restart. This obviously is a life-threatening maneuver in multiple lanes of 70 mph traffic. Dealer has attempted several times to repair vehicle. Condition has occured multiple times; the date below is the most recent.
The engine stalled without warning.

1998 Jaguar Xj8 - engine stalls without warning when car is driving at highway speeds. Only stalls with speeds over 55 mph. Have taken auto to dealership numerous times and they have not been able to fix problem yet. I have safety concerns with this problem. This is not a new problem with this year and model. No factory recalls have been issued for this problem.
98 Jaguar Xj8. Engine stalls without waring at freeway speeds. Jaguar dealer service rep indicated this was something that is not uncommon. Throttle body stated to be the cause of the failure, according to dealer service rep. Very dangerous situation. It has happened 5 times. Pls advise if this is being investigated. I have copies of previous complaints from web site.
Consumer states engine stalls intermittently without warning. Dealer has checked 4x. Dealer has been able to duplicate problem, but can not determine the cause. Ts.
This is the 5th occurrence of this engine stalling at highway speed. Prior stallings occurred on12/8/98, 7/14/99, 10/19/00,11/17/00 and finally today: 7/24/02. Multiple attempts have been made by the dealer to solve this problem, and yet it persists as a safety matter. I do not allow my wife to drive the car. One additional comment, it is no fun to be at freeway speed and find that your car has suddenly stopped running.
I purchased a 1998 Jaguar Xj8 from peyton cramer Jaguar in July of 1998, VIN # sajhx1240wc842852. Since that time I have had a repeated problems with engine stalling at freeway speeds (55-70 mph). This occurs with no warning, and places my family and me at risk. When the engine stalls I have to drift over to the right lane, against the flow of traffic so that I can park the car. Only then can I restart the engine, since it must be started in the "park" shifter position.
