Jeep Cherokee owners have reported 13 problems related to front seat belt retractor (under the seat belt category). The most recently reported issues are listed below. Also please check out the statistics and reliability analysis of Jeep Cherokee based on all problems reported for the Cherokee.
Safety belt retractors do not function consistently, belts hang in door opening and become caught in the latch/strike assembly when the doors are closed. This causes damage to the belt, requiring replacement. I have owned several Chrysler products (Dodge dart, Plymouth reliant, 2 Cherokees and other) and all have exhibited this problem.

Passenger restraints will not release from door post assembly thereby prohibiting their use.
I was able to duplicate the failure described on prime time. G3 seatbelts need recalled.
Seat belts are not working properly, left/ right and rear passengers' seat belts do not work properly. Ccs will tilt over because the belts won't retract correctly. This is dangerous because the seat doesn't stay in place.

I began having problems with the seatbelts on the front right passenger side and also notice one in the back seat as well. The seatbelts began retracting sluggishly. It is now to the point where the front passenger side does not retract at all. I took the Jeep into troy aikman auto mall in fort worth, texas on March 16, 2000 to have all the seatbelts looked at. I was told that all four seatbelts were going out and needed to be replaced. I contacted Chrysler customer service at 1-800-992-1997 and reported what I believed to be defective seatbelts. Chrysler had a rep in my area look at my file and reported back to Chrysler that they would pay one-half of the costs involved. They were doing this as a "good-will gesture" because of the mileage on my vehicle. I have purchased 2 other Jeeps, the last one purchased in 1988 and sold in 1996 when I purchased my current one. I have never had any problems with any of the other seatbelts and the mileage on my 1988 was approx. 150,000 miles. I would appreciate your review of this matter and advsing me of same. Thank you.

Jeep was struck on passengers side, Jeep struck another truck head-on, hitting more of the front passengers side, causing hood damage/broken windshield, and drivers gears to come out. Driver broke sternum in two places due to safety belt not working and airbags not coming out. Jeep was totalled out. ( dot number: tire size: p225/70r16 ).
Consumer's husband lost control of the Jeep that rounded over into a tree, the seats belt did not hold him in, nor did side air bags deploy.
Seat belt retractors fail to operate properly.
The seat belts did not fail, but the belt would catch on the door latch and was rubbing holes into the belt. Jeep was contacted about this problem on 2/14/01, they called and said that it was a "design flaw" but until more complaints were received, they would do nothing about it. Demontrond was also advised about the problem, but I was told that for them to look at it, it would cost me for them to look at it. The Jeep has been "traded.
Consumer was hit from the rear at 75 mph in which the vehicle became airborne the driver's or passenger's air bags did not deploy, nor did the seat belts retract, causing the occupants serious injuries. Please give any further details.
There is a travel stop button on the seatbelt that keeps the belt from returning too far into the retraction/locking system. This button keeps the belt from being able to be adjusted to fit a small child by about 4 inches. Both my children are approximately 40 lbs. . The seatbelt at its smallest allowable adjustment is too big. This problem prevents the seatbelt from being worm as per guidlines and is in my opinion a severe safety shortcoming. Anyone having children out of child seat age has children susceptible to injuries involving even quick stops.
