1 Seat Belt problem of the 2021 Jeep Cherokee

Failure Date: 03/10/2026

Seatbelt failure in a 2021 Jeep Cherokee at approximately 80,000 miles. The seatbelt is not functioning properly and does not operate as intended, creating a safety concern. The issue was diagnosed by the dealership, who confirmed the seatbelt failure and stated repairs are needed. I was quoted $522 for the repair, and only partial goodwill assistance has been offered. Despite this being a critical safety component, I have not been provided a loaner or rental vehicle while the repair is expected to take 5–10 days. This leaves me without safe transportation. I am concerned about the safety risk of a failed seatbelt and the lack of full support for a safety-related defect.

2 Seat Belt problem of the 2018 Jeep Cherokee

Failure Date: 11/12/2025

I fastened seatbelt. It retracted, but heard a rolling noise, which sounded like a can or bottle rolling in the floor behind me. Paid no attention to it and forgot about it. Next time I drove the Jeep, it happened again, so I got home and checked. There was nothing there to make that noise. Another short drive and I realized the seat belt wouldn't tighten, even though I attempted to tighten it some. Reading online, I found a suggestion to pull it out, release it slowly and listen for the racheting sound. It does not make the sound so I checked passenger side to see if it was different. Passenger side does rachet as the belt is slowly released. I've been wearing my seatbelt religeously since 1964, when one saved my life. I panic without it!.

3 Seat Belt problem of the 2019 Jeep Cherokee

Failure Date: 01/18/2025

Passenger seat belts closest two both driver side and passenger side in the back seat do not lock properly. We tried to vacuum it clean and blow compressed air in it to clean it out but still not working. We took it to a local Jeep dealer and they confirmed they would need to be replaced but only the extended warranty covers $599 (we owe $386). This should be an automatic safety hazard because I have a child who sits there and a pet who gets tethered there. If an accident was to occur and injured either of them, that would be grounds for a lawsuit. The car is treated the same as my sedan and it has no seatbelt issues.

5 Seat Belt problem of the 2014 Jeep Cherokee

Failure Date: 06/03/2024

Without any notice my drivers side seatbelt won't retract. Not even a little. It is completely useless. When I looked online I saw that so many people were having this issue that there was possibly going to be a recall/repair. I tried several times to get it to retract even a little but it won't at all.

8 Seat Belt problem of the 2019 Jeep Cherokee

Failure Date: 09/01/2022

For the passed few months (beginning sept 2022), my cars temperature gauge inside shows that its running hot even when there is coolant present. When checking the coolant prior to taking off the cap, the conatiner looks empty. However, when I take off the cap there is a gurgling noise and the container refills on its own. Unfortunately. I've had to add coolant to my car every 5-10 days to make sure it stays full because it constantly says it's hot, all the way to the h. Since then there have been a list of other issues: 1. Heat has randomly stopped working and the check engine light has come on. 2. Error message saying automatic stop/start is unavailable and service stop/start 3. Lots of jerking when pressing the gas petal to accelerate and you can hear the gears trying to move, but it gets stuck at 1 number and then a hard jerk 4. Ticking/knocking sound when driving (started 1/1/23) 5. When using the dash screen, it randomly blanks out and I am unable to see/hear until I restart the car 6. Seatbelts lock when trying to put them on after starting the car. The belts will not move and it cannot be put on until after I move the car in reverse/drive.

9 Seat Belt problem of the 2017 Jeep Cherokee

Failure Date: 07/01/2022

Indicator lights are shown on dash include gas cap, seat belt and engine. All gear lights display red when driving and states to service shifter. Dash displays service engine soon. Service air bag system. Seat belt will constantly ding even though it is buckled and will not stop dinging. Replaced gas cap, but indicator light continues to display on dash. Strongly believe there are electrical issues causing theses defects. Took to local dealership and they performed an update, but the indicator lights started to display again the following day, along with the constant dinging from the vehicle not being able to sensor the seat belt being buckled. This has been happening for over a year now and no one seems to be acknowledging there is an extreme safety concern with this vehicle. Strongly believe it is due to the fact of being at fault and not wanting to correct the defects without compensation. Plus there is an abnormal sound when accelerating since these issues began and are continuous. If you’re an attorney reading this, please find me through my VIN #. I’m tired of dealing with these issues and willing to take legal action to resolve these issues. Will never buy a Jeep again. Thanks.

10 Seat Belt problem of the 2019 Jeep Cherokee

Failure Date: 02/24/2022

Went through a creek water came over my hood and then my stop/start sensor and seat belt dinger won't shut off.

11 Seat Belt problem of the 2017 Jeep Cherokee

Failure Date: 09/14/2021

Initially started with parking brake coming on and it took 15 mins of pushing and pulling the button/switch and turning car on and off. Then service air bags light came on. Next was saying passenger and driver seat belts not buckled even tho both were buckled. Then abs light came on. Mechanic determined it was ocr sensor located under center console. Apparently can only get part from Jeep and its $400. Ordered and the Jeep wont recognize it so replacement had to be ordered. Now tire pressure light is on as well. Says front driver and rear passenger are low even tho all tires are at 34psi. The seat belt dinging is constant even tho belts are buckled. I have no cruise control. Over past 2 weeks have had the parking brake issue twice. The rest of issues are constant. So now driving around waiting on part with constant worry my parking brake will engage. Other issues are inconvenient and annoying but the brake and airbags are saftey issues. Also my odometer blinks constant too.

12 Seat Belt problem of the 2016 Jeep Cherokee

Failure Date: 10/06/2020

13 Seat Belt problem of the 2015 Jeep Cherokee

Failure Date: 05/25/2020

Vehicle was in motion when it left the road. I swerved to miss a dog. I had my seatbelt on during this accident however my head (top, right front of my head) hit the windshield glass and the glass broke/shattered. My hair was caught in the broken cracks of the glass on the windshield and my hair was pulled out of my head, I guess when the seatbelt pulled me back into position it managed to keep my hair lodged. I got small pieces of glass out of my scalp for a week. I had other injuries as well. Every single airbag of this car was deployed and my vehicle a total loss. I was only going around 45 mph. I am thankful to be here sharing this passage. I just have tried to figure out how I managed to hit the windshield while my seatbelt was on my body and the airbags deployed.

14 Seat Belt problem of the 2001 Jeep Cherokee

Failure Date: 02/19/2020

The stock seat belts located in the rear seat of the vehicle do not lock in order to properly and safely install child safety seats. This is not a one time thing as they will not secure after being fully extended. I have already contacted a dealer after finding an old recall but was told they would not fix as they didn't know what I was speaking of.

15 Seat Belt problem of the 2018 Jeep Cherokee

Failure Date: 01/02/2020

Recently my son was complaining about difficulty buckling his seat belt. Upon inspection, I noticed that his seat belt was frayed in several places. It is now frayed half way through the width. I thought maybe he was being to rough with the seatbelt, until I noticed my older sons seatbelt was doing the same thing. To avoid using the seatbelts further, I have had to move my youngest son to the middle and my oldest to the front passenger.

16 Seat Belt problem of the 2016 Jeep Cherokee

Failure Date: 11/21/2019

I was in a car wreck on Nov 21st and hit my front end at 65 mph. My seat belt did not tighten and my airbags did not deploy. The car I hit however had their front airbag deploy and I hit their rear end.

17 Seat Belt problem of the 2017 Jeep Cherokee

Failure Date: 10/24/2019

While picking up my oldest child from school, my three year old toddler reached the shoulder safety belt located in the center seat (next to her car seat on the driver side) and it got wrapped around her neck and nearly strangled her. My child yelled for help. I got out of the drivers seat and ran to her aid and immediately put my fingers between her neck and the belt. I screamed for help. Several adults came to aid and the seatbelt would not let up. Every movement and attempt made to get it to release made the belt tighten even more around my child's neck. The seatbelt had to be cut in order to stop the horrible situation that occurred. The car was in park when this occurred. My child had neck swelling and some bruising from the incident. Had my child been non verbal and not able to get my attention, there is a significant chance she would have died. There is no reason a toddler should be able to reach the shoulder strap while in her car seat harnessed. The seatbelt would not let go. It remained locked and with every movement of my child (my child was panicking and moving) it would tighten further. A child that age does not know of the dangers of seatbelts and there needs to be a safety precaution in place for this kind of situation. I believe the seatbelt is defective and even so there should be some sort of release button for the middle shoulder strap.

18 Seat Belt problem of the 2018 Jeep Cherokee

Failure Date: 10/04/2019

Starting at 25k miles, the vehicle started to burn through oil even before the next oil change. The manual states to go off the oil system light, dealers say different. Oil had 14% left, but the car kept shutting off while driving on the highway. Went to dealer, car burned through all the oil. They refused to check for engine damage and force me to pay for a full oil change. Stated by the dealer, its a known issue with Jeep and there is no fix for it. Now at 33k, check engine light came on, cylinder 4 misfire. Coil pack needs replaced. This is a TSB that was posted at dealers but not given to consumers. Also airbag connection under driver seat comes loose and causes warning lights to service airbag. 10k miles. Dealer said to plug back in and just keep dealing with it.

19 Seat Belt problem of the 2017 Jeep Cherokee

Failure Date: 06/14/2019

First my air bag light came on and said service air bag system. Next the seat belt light is on and dings when someone is in the passenger seat even the the seat belt buckled. Now my tpms light is on without any issues with the air in the tires. This is an ongoing issue they cant resolve.

20 Seat Belt problem of the 2017 Jeep Cherokee

Failure Date: 05/15/2019

My husband and I were involved in a 4 car pile up on the 3 lane highway. Traffic abruptly stopped several cars in front of us on the highway and cars were swerving to miss the traffic stopped. The 2 cars in front of us and our car were all able to get stopped without hitting each other. We were stationary (stopped) when we heard squealing tires and were rear ended by a f250 hauling a trailer full of firewood at a high rate of speed. This truck then pushed us forward into the vehicle in front of us. Which then pushed that car into the vehicle in front of it. So, our vehicle was hit from behind and then in the front. There is severe damage to the vehicle, and it has been deemed a total loss by insurance. My concern is that not one airbag deployed during this accident. In addition, the driver's side seat belt did not lock properly. It was pulled almost all the way out and then locked. My husband is not a big guy so it should of locked rather quickly and not at the end of the belt. As a result, of the malfunctioning equipment my husband flew forward hitting his face and chest on the steering wheel. He did sustain injuries to his face and body from the accident. I would like to request that the airbag and seat belt issued be looked at. It does appear that some other Jeep models of the same year have some recalls for air bag issues. I have included pictures of my damaged vehicle and the seatbelt.

Seat belt latch and buckle does not function properly, it is very hard to buckle in and when trying to unbuckle, it takes a lot of force, time and very unsafe. If left unbuckled the dash light or alarm never comes on to buckle up. This happens at all times, doesn't matter if stationary or moving. Tested this for several days with different people. Brought vehicle dealership on 10/4/14, and they hooked up to computer and found code for malfunctioning seat belt in computer. Just received my third safety recall today. . . P67. P14, brake booster and p36, sun visor wiring are yet to be fixed. P14 dates back to this fall 2014. I've been on a waiting list since that time. The dealership, patriot Chrysler Dodge in mountain lake park, MD says they cannot get the parts to fix the recalls. Is this ridiculous? please advise.

31 Seat Belt problem of the 2007 Jeep Cherokee

Failure Date: 03/10/2014

I have experience with front driver and passenger seat belt for failure to retract back to reel properly. This vehicle under lifetime service contract through Chrysler. I demonstrated service manager twice and she said her mechanic tested and it was meet factory specification. The reel designed by manufacturer was very poor designed with cheap materials. The belts unable to retract during very cold weather. My wife almost tripped out while she was exit the vehicle because of failure retract the belt properly. The driver side had been replaced twice in past but first time on passenger side. I spoke with customer service at factory and they always favor for service representative over customer. I became very frustrating and concern about our safety. I have pictures of the incidents show belts were not retract and left loose to allow door strike the belt and degrade the strength in case of accident. My concern that if I may involve an accident and will belt able to stop me from impact with steering wheel or windshield. That is why I feel uncomfortable with this situation. I have to arrange for purchase replacement driver/passenger seat belts for $138. 00 each plus sales tax and my precision time and driving to the dealer. So far, my experience with Chrysler, general motors and Ford were not great and my Jeep will be last vehicle for my wife and myself. Because they showed that they care about money instead of safety.

32 Seat Belt problem of the 2014 Jeep Cherokee

Failure Date: 01/10/2014

Since the purchase of my new 2014 Jeep Cherokee the transmission has shifted rough when in stop and go traffic, getting stuck in the lower gear and then finally slamming into the next higher gear causing the car to jump forward - extremely dangerous when in close traffic! it only happens when in stop and go traffic up to 15-20 mph and it seems like it will not shift no matter how much I accelerate then it releases suddenly. On the highway in the higher gears it seems to slip only occasionally. The rear seat belts also have consistently "locked up" removing all slack until you have to pull over and stop the vehicle, turn it off, unbuckle the belt let it all the way back in and then reattach it. Yesterday 4/28/14 it did this again to my granddaughter, when we found a place to pull over it would not let us unbuckle the lap piece or give her any slack in the shoulder strap to get out of it, I was forced to pull into a recycling center and borrowed a knife from one of the workers to "cut" the belt in half so it would release her. Both rear seat belts do this on even roads with no sort of incline or bumps! I will be carrying a pocket knife from now on, what if we were in a accident or needed to exit the vehicle quickly??!! dealership said they would order new belts and have them installed, I have an appointment to take it in tomorrow for them to diagnose the transmission problem & seat belt problem. I will follow up with the remedy or lack thereof. The current mileage is now at 8700 miles.

34 Seat Belt problem of the 1999 Jeep Cherokee

Failure Date: 04/06/2011

Driver's side seat frame broke. Seat wobbles back and forth. Obviously an unsafe situation being strapped into a seat that is not properly secured to vehicle. Will force of pushing brake pedal totally separate seat from vehicle? this is a major safety issue relative to passenger restraint (me) and braking or stopping of the vehicle(others). I have read where this is a common occurance on Jeeps of the same model and year as mine. Clearly, this is a manufacturing defect. I have never had a seat frame fail on any other vehicle that I have operated. This is not rust related. It is simply a failed vehicle weight reduction program that has blossomed into a full blown safety concern for both those in the vehicle and anyone else outside of the vehicle in its general proximity. Something needs to be done as vehicle owners will continue to operate these vehicles until the seat totally severs its compromised mounting and becomes totally detached from the vehicle. In the mean time, anyone in its path is at serious risk.
