Liftgate operates intermittently. It will get to the point if it opens then it will not close and latch. The vehicle was stationary in park didn't matter if the engine was on or off.
Liftgate will not stay up when opened. Vehicle was parked, and the ignition was off. I opened the liftgate to get items out of back of vehicle, and it closed, hitting me in the back. Tried to open once more, and it closed again.
On July 18, 2018 I went outside to get an item out of back of my vehicle which was stationary and I couldn't get liftgate to lift and I noticed there was smoke in my car, I opened the drivers side door and smoke billowed out. After a few minutes, I got in the vehicle and moved it back away from my house and noticed I had no a/c, radio or anything working on dashboard. I looked in back of vehicle and it was burnt in the back left corner of lift gate. I immediately called my insurance company and they had it towed to mike smith auto group in beaumont. The smell in the vehicle was awful, a combination of burnt rubber and plastic. There was a recall on this vehicle for back left liftgate in 2015 of which I took it in and supposedly it was repaired. I also immediately called the dealership of which they were no help at all and very unconcerned. I talked to my insurance company and they said if it was due to a recall I should call Chrysler corporation of which I did daily with no results. They would not let me talk to anyone, they finally sent an inspector of which he just looked at the inside of car, did not take the panels off or anything and sent to the corporation and they sent me a letter stating it was not due to recall. My insurance company sent an engineer who took the panel off and searched it thoroughly and determined it was due to the recall. I cannot get any help on this which is not my fault.

Dealer accepted an appointment for the recall repair but did not complete the recall repair. Dealer claimed that Jeep corporate would not allow the dealer to maintain an inventory of required parts, in this case a liftgate module. Thus I am required to return to the dealer for a second appointment to have the recall repair finished. I think this is unreasonable. Service manager explained that this is Jeep policy. He is not permitted to order liftgate modules in advance so as to have an inventory. He explained that he is required to order them for each repair, thus requiring the customer to return for a second time to have the repair finished.

Upon opening the liftgate manually with a key, the contact noticed smoke exiting from the cabin of the vehicle and flames under the control module near the spare tire. In addition, the contact noticed that there was approximately a half of gallon of water in the bottom of the trunk of the vehicle. The contact extinguished the fire. A police report was not filed. There were no injuries sustained. Paulding Chrysler Dodge Jeep ram of dallas, georgia (1246 old griffin rd, 30157 (770)443-2277) was made aware of the failure and sent an inspector to inspect the vehicle. The manufacturer was made aware of the issue and determined that the vehicle was already repaired per NHTSA campaign number: 15v393000 (structure) and that it was no longer the manufacturer's responsibility.
