Five problems related to automatic transmission gear indicator have been reported for the 2006 Jeep Commander. The most recently reported issues are listed below.
My Jeep has been having issues where I will be driving and service park assist system comes on dash board and on the prnd boxes come around it and the car stales. If I try to go the car won't go but rpm go up. The only way I go is I to put it in park then back in drive many times I have to put hazard lights on so that I don't get rear ended. Sometimes when you go into drive it will jerk and then you will see the boxes around the prnd that's when I have to shift back into park wait for boxes to go off then drive. There is also orange light on dash that comes on. Took to repair shop and code was reading u0404. This problem is getting worse and doing it all the time while driving I am afraid to drive it because I have 6 month old baby and 4 year old in the car.
While driving, all gear indicators prnd light simultaneously, "service park assist system" message appears, "check engine" light illuminates, some hard shifts from 2 to 1, 2 to 3 and 3 to 4. Vehicle loses power but does not stall. Engine revs but does not transfer power to wheels.
This problem happens year round. Once you put the vehicle into drive, all of the shift lights "prnd" light up and the vehicle won't accelerate. If you are already driving down the road/ freeway, it will randomly light up and stop accelerating. When it randomly occurs, it happens with no warning, and you have to attempt to pull the vehicle over to the side of road, put it into neutral or park or restart the vehicle, and attempt it again. The check engine light will come on and the problem will happen repeatedly over a week period, then the problem will stop for a week or two and then resurface at the worst time- for example an intersection, an on-ramp, a busy street, and it has presented huge safety issues for me and my family. Does it take someone dying for this to get recalled? I have read forum after forum of the same issue amongst consumers with my exact make, model, and year (and earlier models) and yet, when I called Jeep, they say they have never heard of it, there is no recall, and I've been turned away.
While merging onto the highway when I try to accelerate there is not power. There is boxes around all gears (prnd). The display flash "service park assist". Then check engine light comes on. Called Chrysler said to take to dealer and find out what the repair will be. Dealer said it was a u0404 code invalid data received from gear shift control module and a p0700 code transmission control system. This module is $700 and Chrysler said it was helping me out and doing me a favor by letting me just pay $200. I have found this exact problem mentioned on multiple Jeep forum sites. My parents have replaced the same part and my brother is having the same problems now. I've talked with Chrysler asking why I should have to pay for a part that is malfunctioning in a unsafe manner and was told it hasn't been recalled yet.
Replaced bezel gear selector 3 times since 2006. As of September 2016 a 4th replacement is required per golling Chrysler. Vehicle attempts to stall after 1-2 seconds when starting from a stopped position. The check engine light illuminates and a service message appears stating "service park assist system. " several times from 2006 - 2016 the vehicle almost stalled when entering intersections of city streets. Whenever condition occured the part was replaced (3 times). Part causing the conditions is part# ch68004143-af prndl bezel gear selector and ch52108308-ac connector electrical (transmission). I believe the gear selector and transmission to be defective due to the frequent failure which could cause a safety incident.
