Failure Date: 05/24/2014

All interior handles are cracked or broken, should there be an accident or fire, the occupants may not be able to exit the car, this is a common problem in most Commanders. Chrysler is well aware of this , they should recall the Jeeps and correct the problem< before people get killed.

5 Door problem of the 2006 Jeep Commander

Failure Date: 11/13/2013

The interior door handles molding cracks and breaks off. I have one on drivers side that still functions but passenger side is total none working unless you roll window down and open from outside. This makes for a safety hazard, not being able to get out of the vehicle.

6 Door problem of the 2006 Jeep Commander

Failure Date: 05/15/2013

I own a 2006 Jeep Commander. We love this vehicle. However 2 of our inside door handles have broken. The driver's door handle and back seat left door handle. . In seeing all of the posts regarding this same problem with other Jeep Commander owners it looks like this is a consistent problem. It is absolutely a safety issue for my children, myself and anyone inside the car. My son switched the child safety lock on the backseat (left side) door as well and now because the door handle is broken we are unable to switch it back. Therefore, the only way that passenger can get out of the car is if someone opens the door from the outside. Door latches/handles breaking is an enormous safety problem and viable reason for a recall. We are requesting an investigation into this matter for consideration of a recall.

7 Door problem of the 2006 Jeep Commander

Failure Date: 03/19/2013

My interior door handles are breaking due to what appears to be a manufacture defect. With the door handles breaking it is and or will cause a very dangerous situation if your are ever in an accident and or fire preventing you from exiting the vehicle.

8 Door problem of the 2006 Jeep Commander

Failure Date: 03/01/2013

The rear passenger inside door handle is no longer functioning. There is a piece of plastic within the door that braces the handle so it is secure enough to be able to pull it and open ( unlatch) the door. At this point the door closes but is impossible for the passenger to open the door from the inside. This is a serious safety concern for I have 2 children that ride in the back frequently. My Jeep dealer was notified and I was told that is not covered under warranty. My Jeep is under 100, 000 miles and for this to happen inside the door where no person can touch this ridiculous.

9 Door problem of the 2006 Jeep Commander

Failure Date: 11/25/2012

The rear driver's side door handle became inoperable due to the breakage of the door panel. All of the panels have cracked and some of the plastic has fallen into the door cavity. The door handles are loose and now the rear driver's side is completely inoperable. In a case of any emergency that required exiting the vehicle, the passenger in this seat will not be able to get out. I suspect that all the doors will eventually have the same problem. I have seen multiple complaints regarding this issue. Someone needs to hold Chrysler accountable.

10 Door problem of the 2006 Jeep Commander

The contact owns a 2006 Jeep Commander. While the vehicle was parked, all the internal door handles fractured. The contact had to roll the windows down in order to open the doors from the outside. The failure mileage was 84,000.

11 Door problem of the 2006 Jeep Commander

Failure Date: 09/14/2012

We had the driver door handle break and called Chrysler because there are so many complaints on the internet about this. We were advised to take it to a dealer and have it looked at and a report made. We did that and also had pictures taken and sent with the report to Chrysler, our case # 22652678 was filed. At the time 2 other door handles were showing cracks. We were turned down for a repair even though it is a safety issue. Since that time 2 more handles broke. 2 can not be opened from the inside. We were told they would consider discounting the repair to 1300. 00 per door. If they have such a bad design and plastic parts you would think an honorable company would do the recall and repair. We now have a dangerous car with no way to exit in an emergency. At our age we can not be jumping over consoles and seats to exit the car. Our children have been advised to sue if anything happens because Chrysler does not want to correct the problem they created. I understand 2008 models had a door handle redesign so they obviously knew of the problem. Thank you for any assistance you can provide.

12 Door problem of the 2006 Jeep Commander

Failure Date: 07/02/2012

As in many previous year models Jeep has allowed its Commander to be manufactured with interior door handles attached to very thin and brittle plastic door panels. This allows the door handles to break loose from the panels and make the handle inoperable. In order to exit the vehicle you have to open the window and use the outside handle. This condition obviously can present a very unsafe situation especially in an emergency situation . It happens to all four doors as time goes on so that it becomes dangerous not only for the driver but all the occupants of the vehicle. Jeep has not found it in their best interest to recognize this obvious defect therefore you must go thru a long complicated procedure to make any type of claim with no guarantee of a resolution in your favor. I would suggest this condition be determined a danger to the occupants of the vehicle before someone gets seriously hurt or dies because they can't get out the door. In reading various complaints at Jeep Commander. Com there are hundreds of the same scenarios playing out in the same models that Jeep manufactures. Please try and help correct a serious and dangerous oversite in the design and production of these vehicles. Thank you.

13 Door problem of the 2006 Jeep Commander

Failure Date: 06/17/2012

I have 2006 Jeep Commander that front driver side and rear passenger side door handle housing has cracked and broken. I am concerned if during accident if other 2 doors will break and won't have a way out of car.

14 Door problem of the 2006 Jeep Commander

Failure Date: 04/08/2012

The contact owns a 2006 Jeep Commander. The contact stated that while driving in inclement weather at approximately 35-45 mph, an elk crashed into the front end of the vehicle. The driver and passenger side air bags both failed to deploy. The passenger seated in the front seat sustained injuries to the back and head. The contact sustained injuries to the neck and back. The manufacturer was contacted and advised that the elk did not impact the vehicle in the area of the air bag sensors therefore, the air bags did not deploy. The contact stated that the air bag was defective and that the air bag warning light was illuminated prior to the crashed. The vehicle was destroyed. A police report was filed of the incident. . The vehicle was destroyed. The failure and current mileage was 114,000. Updated 12/12/12 updated 12/21/2012.

15 Door problem of the 2006 Jeep Commander

Failure Date: 04/07/2012

Interior door panels(both front doors) at door handles the plastic around handles has cracked and fallen out making the door handle sometimes unstable to open the door. Concerned from a safety standpoint that at some point the doors will not be able to be open from the inside and could be trapped inside in case of an emergency and the option of powering down the window is not possible.

16 Door problem of the 2006 Jeep Commander

Failure Date: 03/01/2012

On my 2006 Jeep Commander the inside door handles break and you can't open the doors without reaching outside and using the outside handles. If this isn't a safety issue that I see hundreds others have typed in Jeep forums then I don't know what is. Hopefully we don't have a crash and can't get out of a burning Jeep or go into water. Also see how several Jeep owners have posted utube videos on this safety issue. You call Chrysler and they tell you 500 to 600 a door handle to fix. Please look into this matter before some one loses a loved one. I can email photos if you want them.

17 Door problem of the 2006 Jeep Commander

Failure Date: 02/15/2012

Faulty interior door handle assembly problem the problem is with the incorrect resin mix which results in a brittle and crumbling material causing failure just the same. This is obviously a manufacturer defect, however its a fault that is not covered under Jeep warranty. The only fix was replacing the entire door panels. Chrysler designed the interior door panels on the Jeep Commander in such a way that the entire door panel had to be replaced rather than just the door handle. The interior door handle is plastic welded at certain points from the backside of the door panel. I understand 2008 models had a door handle redesign so they obviously knew of this problem. Thank you for any assistance you can provide.

18 Door problem of the 2006 Jeep Commander

Failure Date: 01/11/2012

The contact owns a 2006 Jeep Commander. The contact stated that the four interior door handles became fractured and exhibited severe cracks. In addition, the front passenger's side door would not allow the occupant to exit the vehicle. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was unavailable. Djr.

19 Door problem of the 2006 Jeep Commander

Failure Date: 12/09/2011

The door handles where you open and close the door have completely shattered in to pieces by just opening and closing the door normally. I am unable to exit my car properly because the drivers side handle is completely shattered and will not open. I am unable to exit my car without crawling across the seat due to the handle completely crumbling and now other door I use to get out has started to crumble. One of the back doors is starting to break as well and they tell me it will cost over 2800. 00 to repair. I don't have that kind of money to fix a door handle. I'm afraid I'm in danger if I have to exit my car in a hurry or my daughter or a riding guest. It's horrible that it just cracks like nothing and they wont take any responsibility. I cannot just open my door and get out of my car. They all being broken is one thing and I believe obviously a flaw on Jeeps part, but not being able to get out of my car is dangerous.

20 Door problem of the 2006 Jeep Commander

Failure Date: 11/09/2011

The inside door handle is broken. All four or the door handles are broken. The door will not open from the inside. I have many people online say that their Jeeps have done the same thing. My girl friend has even cut her hand do to the sharp edges when it breaks. In case of a fire or something we would be trapped inside the Jeep. I would think the Jeep company would recall these trucks but they won't fix the problem.

21 Door problem of the 2006 Jeep Commander

Failure Date: 11/01/2011

All interior door handles have broken and car cannot be opened from the inside.

22 Door problem of the 2006 Jeep Commander

Failure Date: 10/10/2011

Both the front and rear drivers side door handles broke and you have to roll down the windows to get out of the vehicle. The handles are made of cheap plastic and break easy by normal use. This is a safety hazard that could potentially cost someone their lives. Jeep wants around $1200. 00 to fix the problem but I believe they should fix this safety issue for free and recall the Jeeps affected.

23 Door problem of the 2006 Jeep Commander

Failure Date: 10/01/2011

Interior door handle base shattered, making handle inoperable and creating dozens of sharp shards of brittle plastic in the passenger compartment. Drivers door cannot be opened from inside the car.

24 Door problem of the 2006 Jeep Commander

Failure Date: 08/20/2011

Rear driver side interior door handle shattered when door handle was pulled. Door handled was pulled on by an 8-year old female without excessive force. 15jun2013, driver door handle shattered when attempt to open was made, again without excessive force. If vehicle is vehicle is in a collision where electrical system fails and there is a fire, likelihood of occupant survival is low.

25 Door problem of the 2006 Jeep Commander

Failure Date: 07/12/2011

The contact owns a 2006 Jeep Commander. The contact stated that the front driver side interior door fractured. The contact took the vehicle to the dealer and was told that the entire door panel would need to be replaced. 26 Door problem of the 2006 Jeep Commander

Failure Date: 05/05/2011

I have an extreme problem. I have a Jeep Commander and all 4 door handles have broken and now you cant open my rear doors. My kids cant get out unless I let them out. This is a serious safety issue and I cant believe after the hundreds of complaints on Jeep websites, that NHTSA hasn't shoved a recall down Chrysler's throat. C'mon folks this is dangerous!!! hundreds and hundreds of folks having problems. Look on you tube and see what is listed there for you to see. Just regular folks having a multi billion dollar company stuff it to em. Chrysler didn't even offer to send me new door handles. This is a manufacturers error.

27 Door problem of the 2006 Jeep Commander

Failure Date: 04/14/2011

Two of my inside door handles have broken. I am very concerned that in an event of an emergency my family and I will not be able to exit the car. With four children it is paramount that this problem is rectified. After much research I found that many other owners of this model and year vehicle are experiencing the same problem. In addition, it is difficult to procure replacement parts. I feel that Jeep should take some sense of ownership for the inherit problem and offer to repair the problem at their expense.

28 Door problem of the 2006 Jeep Commander

Failure Date: 04/04/2011

Front passeger door closed on my wifes heel and shattered the door handle. I was shocked that the weight of the door closing on itself would cause this and Jeep will not cover the cost at $500+ a door panel. Now its become a safety issue for me, especially if it happens to all my doors. If we had a fire in the cabin of the car, we would be at serious risk of burns or even death. I know I am not the only one this is happening too, there are many Commander owners reporting the same issues and safety concerns. Since Jeep is not stepping up to help, what is the NHTSA doing about it?.

29 Door problem of the 2006 Jeep Commander

Failure Date: 03/01/2011

The plastic inserts that the door mechanism connects to has failed and broken on all 4 doors, in this case the door opened on the highway with no injuries. However when I reported it to Jeep they told me it was due to extreme wear caused by me, it's only me and my wife in our house no kids so the back doors have not been used. Yet they have the same problems. Jeep is happy to fix this at a cost of $2600. When I did some searching online, I found a few websites dedicated to this problem. Sometimes you can't get out of the car, what if their was a fire?.

30 Door problem of the 2006 Jeep Commander

Failure Date: 02/11/2011

Two door handles broke and I was unable to open doors, the plastic shattered in pieces. I had to get out by the passenger side. I love Jeep but this is simply junk!.

31 Door problem of the 2006 Jeep Commander

Failure Date: 12/23/2010

The interior door handles are all cracked and 1 out of the 4 works. I have to crawl over the console to exit the vehicle! I am not the only 2006 Jeep Commander with this design flaw, many have exactly the same problem as I do! Chrysler does not want to correct the problem they created. I understand 2008 models had a door handle redesign so they obviously knew of this problem. Thank you for any assistance you can provide. This is a major safety concern in the event of wreck, fire, or if you drove into high water. How do you get out of the vehicle quickly. . . Dukes of hazard style?! come on Chrysler!.

32 Door problem of the 2006 Jeep Commander

Failure Date: 12/15/2010

The front and rear door handles cracked, and don't work. If my child or the driver needs to get out they cant. My local dealership in orlando florida, wants me to pay $750 for each. This is crazy. . . . . How can a handle cost that. Jeep should replace this faulty issue not me, I paid enough for the car. I have owned 3 Jeeps in my life. This will be the last.

33 Door problem of the 2006 Jeep Commander

Failure Date: 10/30/2010

Physical deterioration and detachment of the inner door handle mechanisms on 2006 Jeep Commander. Through normal wear, the rear driver side inner door handle physically failed fully. Through normal wear the front driver side inner door handle has started to fail beginning with the recessed plastic portion directly behind the door handle becoming detached and separating along what appear to be stress lines. It appears that this will shortly lead to the full failure of the door handle from the inside of the vehicle making exit from the vehicle infeasible without access to the outer door handle.

34 Door problem of the 2006 Jeep Commander

Failure Date: 09/15/2010

1. Normal use of the vehicle. 2. The inner door handles break and you cant exit the vehicle. 3. The only current solution is to replace the entire oem door panel for every door. The door handle is plastic and is molded into the door panel so there is no easy way to repair it without replacing the whole panel at a very large expense. Unfortunately the replacement door panels are the same design so it is only a matter of time before they fail also. My fear is that in a time of crisis one or all of the doors could fail to open. Below was sent to Chrysler. Com there is a major design flaw with the inner door handles on the Jeep Commander. The housing is entirely made of plastic and is very brittle. After a few years of use the plastic starts to crack then break away and the inner handle will not function. In order to replace the handle you are forced to replace the entire inner door panel. Part 5js891d1ag for the drivers door. As you can imagine purchasing the entire oem panel for each door is ungodly expensive but necessary if you and your family actually want to exit the vehicle without having to go "dukes of hazard" and climb out. The replacement panels are in no way improved from the original design so it is only a matter of time that they will break as well in the same manner. I am very concerned for my family that they will not open the door in a time of need. I am a member of several online forums and this is a known issue with several Commander owners. From what I have found the Jeep liberty has the exact same issue. . . . Poor design.

35 Door problem of the 2006 Jeep Commander

Failure Date: 09/06/2010

The contact owns a 2006 Jeep Commander. The vehicle was parked and shut off when the contact opened the front driver side door from the inside; the plastic material behind the door handle suddenly fractured. The same failure occurred on the front passenger side door. The door could no longer be opened from the interior. The vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer but the vehicle was not inspected or repaired. The failure mileage was unknown and the current mileage was 68,000.
