Body Problems of Jeep Compass - part 1

Accident on [xxx] at [xxx], I headed out of the timberlane estates neighborhood to go to volunteer at the nwr in crystal river and was behind 3 other cars going out of the same neighborhood. As I started to turn from [xxx] (25 mph) to [xxx] (decelerating to about 10), I had to fight the steering wheel trying to straighten it out but instead the car continued left and hit a car at the stop sign. This shook me up quit a bit. When I got out, the driver of the hit car and I traded information. We both have state farm insurance. Called state farm to report the incident and took pictures of the front of both cars and of the skid marks. Called my husband and as we waited for the tow truck, we realized that the cv joint (?lower all joint) was totally out, which also caused the tire to flatten as well. We realized from the skid marks that this occurred as I was starting my turn. That’s why I lost control. There were no injuries, though I was shook up thru the next day and sore in my right wrist, shoulder and neck. Car went to jim hudson collision center crystal river, FL. Car was inspected by them and the state farm insurance adjuster. The attached photos are from the hudson collision center. I have a few taken at the accident site if you want them too. Two bolts that hold the wheel assembly to the frame of the vehicle have broken off. The first in April 2025 was on the passenger side, and the second in July 2025 was on the driver side. The Jeep service personnel provided no explanation for how this could happen or seemed to have inspected the other components after the vehicle was serviced for the first broken bolt.

Since 2023, my vehicle has had water leakage coming from the back right passenger side from the seat belt opening and right side of the back trunk. This is a major concern because my son’s car seat is seated on the right back seat where the water leakage is coming from. I don’t want any mold to grow under his car seat or on his car seat. Also I gave jumper cables in the back of my trunk for safety. What if they were to get soak and wet then they are not able to work. Also I put my groceries in the trunk of my car. I don’t want them to get spoiled or become contaminated.

The rear subframe and suspension are rusted. I have been hearing a rattling sound for the past couple of weeks, especially when driving over bumps. When I took the car to my mechanic, he detected a cracking in the rear subframe/suspension due to the rust. If this would totally break it would be a substantial safety risk to myself, the driver, as well as other drivers on the road. No warning lights or messages appeared on the car to warn of this problem.

Prior to the failure of the rear drive axles there were 2 instances of the 4wd lamps coming on. Reset the lever and light went out. Another instance had the abs light come on. After several miles the light went off. The next morning while driving to the independent repair shop the car completely stopped on a blvd in the middle of traffic. Luckily I was not rear ended by another vehicle. The car needed to be towed to the shop. Upon inspection by the tech was the rear drive axles had become corroded and needed to be replaced. As well as the backing plates. The vehicle is 8 years old and has 62,000 miles.

Was told that the sub frame is bad. After looking into it, it seems to be a known issue with the Jeep Compass.

I was driving down the highway in my 2016 Jeep Compass and my hood flew up causing me to veer into oncoming lanes because I was not able to see.

First noticed condensation on the inside of the windshield and dealership alledgedly unclogged sunroof drains. Then noticed ice formed on the inside of the windshield and passenger floor-board carpet damp specifically by door jam seal. While driving water pooled and leaked through front dome light. Having water fall through the ceiling via the light while driving through an intersection presents a safety issue because of distraction, visibility and potential electrical issues due to water damage. The vehicle is currently back at the dealership and they are trying to recreate the problem. There were no warning lamps, messages other than the condensation, ice on the inside of the windshield.

Rear frame is rusted to the point that it is unsafe to drive as per monroeville, PA Chrysler/ Jeep. I included some images and the cost of repair from the dealership. I am having the repairs done at this dealership. Please extend the warranty to Jeep Compasses. Mine is a 2015 and it is unsafe to drive and is costing me more money to replace tires.

My 2014 Jeep Compass is making vibrating noises, swerving moments and cracking sounds. Brought it to my mechanic, he found that the rear subframe is rotted out. The front subframe is also strating to pivot. Reading up on this issue it seems to be very common yet Chrysler has not made a recall for the safety of the passengers and driver and I was told by Chrysler that the extended warranty was only for models up until 2007 and that's it only for the original owner. I would like to report this issue as it is a serious problem.

My mechanic reported that car's rear control arm has broken away from frame of car and is a very unsafe condition to use. No warning was given. Was found during normal inspection on mechanics lift. Manufacturer would not help during owners notification of problem but recognized the seriousness of the problem. Dealer has not been notified just my mechanic professional's recommendation.

-the vehicles front subframe failed to support the vehicles stability, structure, weight, and momentum, during normal driving ,braking, acceleration from a stop, etc. -the corroded and complete 'rusted thru metal' subframe is available for visual/safety inspection, and photo's are attached. - safety was severely compromised while driving, as the "subframe to main channel frame" fastening bolt was sheared and broken off while driving, causing the vehicle to veer, without control, due to the engine weight and front end suspension/components shifting out of position. - independent service centers and auto- mechanic statements in multiple car safety forums have indicated similar situations have occurred, and could be fatal at highway speeds/conditions. - the vehicle is scheduled for dealership inspection and consultation for further use, and/or repair. -no warning lights were initiated at time of this issue. Steering wheel vibration, and loss of steering control occurred.

The frame infront where the motor and steering attach rotted completely threw, separated at the weld. It is a safety hazard where steering is affected. The dash lights for the traction, abs, and even the cruise control are on and those items are no longer functional. This car was purchased in 2017, holiday automotive in fondulac, WI with this condition apparent. The mechanic who changed my oil reported it to me in the spring of 2018. And as of this spring the car is undrivable as it is broken. If this were to break while someone were driving it, an accident would happen.

I took my car to be inspected for yearly registration. I was told by the repair shop that I have parts of the subframe and suspension that are excessively rusted, to the point where they are a safety concern and have to be replaced. Other model years of the first generation Jeep Compass have been issued extended warranties on those parts, and I believe it should be extended to the entire first generation of the Jeep Compass.

Front and rear crossmember corrosion (x69 warranty extension) - 2008-2012 Dodge caliber & Jeep Compass/patriot- NHTSA id # 10140027 my daughter was recently given a 2008 Jeep Compass by a family member for her 16th birthday. We took it to our local auto serviceman who checked the car out, and made us aware of the warranty extension b/c the font crossmembers are rusted out. We live in ohio and would qualify for the warranty, yet the car is past the 10 year timeframe. Other than this issue, the car is in great shape, only 85k miles. I contacted the dealership and Chrysler about the issue, and both said they would not honor the warranty. My questions are, is there anything else I can do, and if this is done as an extended warranty, are all customers formally notified? why would the dealership not ever recommend the fix if they serviced the car, which according to this family member, never happened? there has been no accident, but the car rattles a little when driven, so I want to fix it before something does happen.

Wife was driving her Jeep when she started to veer to the left. Went to turn to steering to get straight when it wasn't responding a lot of slack in the steering. Called a tow truck when the tow truck lifted noticed the cradle/sub frame was broken. She was on a country road when it happened. If this was on a highway or interstate there would have been major collision resulting in death. There was no warning when it broke it just broke. After doing some research into why it would break the air conditioning hose to the water to drain was running on the sub frame which rusted and eventually break, the break shifted the engine about a foot and dropped about 10 inches since she didn't hit anything or no property damage there was no police involved. I have reached out to Chrysler with the issue with no response. My family was in danger due to a poor design that could of been avoided and what I read she wasn't the only one.

The contact owns a 2011 Jeep Compass. The contact stated while the vehicle was being state inspected, the technician informed her that that the sub panels on the vehicle were corroded. The vehicle was not taken to the local dealer. The manufacturer had not been informed of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 130,000.

Multiple times I would try to start the vehicle and the battery would be dead. After jumping the car off it would operate without a problem. I took the car to a repair shop and had it checked but no problems were found. On 02/01/2021 the car again would not start. I had a mechanic jump the car off and I let it idle to build up the battery. After a few minutes there was a noise and then smoke started coming out from under the hood. Then fire!.

I was going west on fair view avenue in tucson, arizona when my car suddenly shifted out of drive into something below drive. It started shimmying back and forth and would not proceed. I was coming upon a 4 way stop, so I finally got the car back into drive; it seemed ok. I drove very carefully and slowly home without incident--maybe 4 or 5 blocks. However, when I turned into my garage, the gearshift shifted below again and my car shimmied out of control back and forth and the right side of my car was badly scraped, and the left taillight cracked. So, the first time I was briefly stationary waiting for the cars ahead of me to move, but the second time I was in motion but moving very slowly to negotiate the entrance to the garage, so almost stationary. The garage was not damaged. I do not have a cell phone that can take photos at this time, but I hope to secure a cell phone. The dealership always inspects my car for its regular service, so they must have records. Thank you for your attention to this matter.

Extremely rusted and corroded crossmemeber and subframe rendering it dangerous of falling apart on the road. The vehicle made a rattling sound under the car while in motion from the streets to the expressway. Seems to be corroding and rusting from the inside out.

I brought in my 2011 Jeep Compass for an oil change and a simple repair. My mechanic called with what I believed was the call that my vehicle was ready to be picked up. To my surprise, he stated that there was a major issue. He stated that the frame was completely rotted and unsafe to drive, even the mile back to my house. After speaking with the dealership I purchased the vehicle, they advised me to drive the vehicle there (approx. 1/2 mile away) and leave for repair. They explained that the frame was placed under extended warranty due to the issue and that I would need to pay approx. $500-$1,000. 00 for �other parts� and an alignment when replacing the frame that were not part of the warranty. Quite frankly this is unacceptable. It should cost me no out of pocket expense for a failed part, especially a frame on a less than 10 year old vehicle. I am incredibly thankful that I brought it in prior to giving it to my 17 year old. Very dangerous! Jeep should cover the whole cost! in addition, I was told the part isn't available for at least 4-6 weeks!.

I believed I had locked my doors on 2 occasions using my electronic key fob. The car beeped and lights flashed indicating that the doors were locked. Twice after thinking doors were locked I was robbed of approximately 55. 00 hidden in my glove box and center console. After 2nd time, upon investigation of the locking procedure I was able to determine that all doors except driver's would lock but not driver's even though upon walking away the indicators showed that all doors had locked. Even when in car hitting the lock button on inside of door locked all doors but driver's. I had to use key on outside to finally lock door and manually move button on inside of door to get it to lock. I believe this to be a safety issue because believing vehicle is locked when in fact it is not allows for assault or car jacking of me while stopped. It has already cost me money and time and it makes the door unsafe if ever hit on the side where that door is located because of less strength in the door. Car under warranty but upon fixing it dealer states that window motor for that door also needs attention but no parts available at this time. I will be leaving on a 500 mi. Trip tomorrow without the ability to lower my window another possible safety issue.

Purchased a 2007 Jeep Compass 2nd hand and found rear subframe and suspension parts is severely rusted . The vehicle clunks and hopps with every bump in the road. If you run over the reflectors while changing lanes vehicle will abruptly jerk in the directionyou are going. Took it to Jeep there was a recall for this problem that expired in 2017 I dont think there should be an expiration date for a safety hazard that thousands of Jeeps and or dodges have they told me they cant help me.

Tl the contact owns a 2014 Jeep Compass. The contact stated that while driving at 35 mph, there was an abnormal sound coming from the rear of the vehicle. The contact turned off and restarted the vehicle and the sound disappeared. A dealer was not notified of the failure. The vehicle was not diagnosed nor repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 79,000.

2011 Jeep Compass 4wd. Had shaking in steering wheel and a wheel wobble. Even at driving 40mph or lower. Mechanic said the cradle/crossmember was rusted out. At 8 years old, the engine cradle should not be rusted out. Huge safety hazard. ## #vpic# 1 - check digit (9th position) does not calculate properly #vpic#.

The contact was informed by ferrario auto team of sayre (102 spring st, sayre, PA 18840, (570) 888-2367) that the vehicle's front cross member bar was corroded and needed to be replaced. The contact was also informed that there was an extended warranty for the part; however, the warranty was expired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was unknown.

2008 Jeep purchased brand new in 2010. In 2019 with only 71,000 miles and now viisible rust on the vehicle, my mechanic advised that the subframe was rotted through with rust and was soft and the subframe needs replacing ($1,750). I contacted fca (fiat Chrysler automobile) and they told me the warranty expired and I would have to pay for it.

While moving , every bump or crack in road created a rattle and thud and would vibrarate though steering column. Went to repair garage and was shown rusted crossmember barely holding together. Plus sway bar broke loose from rusted area.

Different VIN on labels which is 1c4njdeb5ed770649 and on the body under seat which is 1c4njcfa2ed770589.

Front sub frame is rotted right through, apparently a common problem on these vehicles.

Tl-the contact owns a 2018 Jeep Compass. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, there was an abnormal clicking noise coming from the front of the vehicle. The vehicle was taken to ramsey Chrysler Jeep Dodge ram, 1555 NJ-17, ramsey, NJ 07446, (201) 818-9600, to be diagnosed and inspected. The contact was informed that the cv-boots needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired however, the failure recurred. The vehicle was inspected again and the contact was informed that the undercarriage was improperly torqued to the sub frame of the vehicle. The undercarriage bolts were torqued. The manufacturer was contacted and informed of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 22,000. The ah.

The car leaks thru the overhead lights during rain/storms which causes the water to come onto the shift control column causing major distraction while driving. In addition, the water leakage also runs along the driver sidebar, and pools on the drivers floorboard and the seat immediately aft. This is a safety hazard when water is pouring out of the overhear dome lights onto the shifter/driver while driving. Rain comes in be it stationary or driving. This has been a constant problem since we have owned this car. We have repaired/replaced the sunroof, new windshield. . . Nothing works. This car is a safety hazard, I don't allow any members of my family to drive it any longer.

Parked 2019 Jeep Compass in normal parking lot went inside for a few hours then heard popping noises from parking lot. Ran outside to see engine caught on fire and burst into flames via the engine compartment damaging the entire front half of the vehicle. After flames put out, there was a large hole in the hood of the car going down into the engine that damaged the windshield, bumper, engine, light, tires and doors. Other cars around mine were damaged as well as the fire spread. Was parked at hotel parking lot for a few hours before caught on fire.

The windshield wiper came off during a storm the day I bought the vehicle. 3 or 4 weeks later the front bumper popped off under the passenger headlight while driving down the interstate. Local dealership told me the vehicle was not assembled properly at the factory.
