Steering Column Problems of Jeep Compass

While moving , every bump or crack in road created a rattle and thud and would vibrarate though steering column. Went to repair garage and was shown rusted crossmember barely holding together. Plus sway bar broke loose from rusted area.

Steering wheel was making a popping noise when turning. While driving on the interstate a bolt and washer fell onto the floor landing right next to my foot. Took it immediately to the dealership and it was discovered that it was a steering column bolt that had fell out. The dealership reinstalled the bolts and had to re-torque the rest of the steering column bolts.

The clock spring was going in the steering column. It started as a clicking noise when I turned the wheel. I was told it was the axle shaft and replaced it and still had the same noise. I took it to a garage and they found the clock spring was bad. He said that when these go your steering wheel will lock up. Also, upon calling Jeep for the part he found that this is a common problem.

The contact owns a 2011 Jeep Compass. The contact stated that while driving approximately 35 mph, the steering column seized and the vehicle unexpectedly stalled. The engine restarted and resumed normally. The failure occurred on three different occasions. The vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer, where they were unable to duplicate the failure. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 1,000.
