Battery problems of the 1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Two problems related to battery have been reported for the 1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee. The most recently reported issues are listed below.

1 Battery problem

Failure Date: 01/28/2012

Engine suddenly cut off while driving, power brakes and steering were immediately lost, although lights and gages remained operational. Battery and grounds tested fine. Cap, rotor and plugs are all new, wires and coil test fine, and vehicle has new mopar crank position and throttle position sensors. Research on Jeep technical sites finds identical problems being traced to failure of power control module pcm, sometimes also referred to as engine control module (ecm).

2 Battery problem

Failure Date: 05/01/1999

Vehicle was purchased with approximately 34,000 miles on it. When consumer turns ignition key to on position, guages in the vehicle do not register or activate. When consumer attempts to start vehicle, engine will crank on/- backfire, and then shutdown. Consumer has taken vehicle to a dealership, and had battery replaced twice.
