47 problems related to fuel pump have been reported for the 1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee. The most recently reported issues are listed below.
This is a commonly known defect with these Jeeps which has never been adequately addressed by the NHTSA. Someone is going to get killed if the manufacturer is not held responsible. Infamous stalling problem. Whether going 10 mph or 70 mph, vehicle will stall with no warning. Generally will re-start after turning off ignition, but not always immediately. On my Jeep, I have replaced the computer module, crankshaft position sensor, fuel pump, fuel filters, maf sensor, distributor cap, rotor, plugs and plug wires. I have had the computer module wiring harness reworked. Still stalls, and I have been forced to park the Jeep for safety reasons.
My vehicle stalls when it is hot outside. I have had the coil replaced then I had the catalytic converter replaced and O2 sensor and it still stalled on start up. I took it to the dealership and it stalled and they told me it was my fuel pump. I spent 965 on a fuel pump I didn't need because it is still stalling and they have no clue why. I seen this problem on mean forums. I think the dealer should be aware of this problem and should know how to fix them not make someone spend a thousand dollars on a might.
Just over a year ago, my 1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee laredo encountered a defective fuel pump. As I was in the process of procuring a replacement pump, a friend told me to check for recalls/TSB's on it as he had experienced many fuel pump problems with these. There were, I believe two TSB's involving my vehicle so I called Chrysler. They told me to take the vehicle to the dealership to determine if the problem was the pump. I told her I had already done that. She told me that they had to determine it and if it was the pump, Chrysler would cover the repair. I had it towed to Chrysler ($65) and they indeed found it was a defective fuel pump and replaced it and I was charged over $600 for the repair. After the fact, Chrysler declined to pay for what they promised. I had found a replacement pump that I was prepared to install myself for $163 and had Chrysler been honest and declined to cover the repair, I would have accomplished it myself for $163 and been able to go on vacation to the outer banks instead of paying almost $700 and having to cancel my vacation. I have contacted , emailed, etc many people at Chrysler to no avail. I have since learned that when you deal with Chrysler, you better get it in writing! please help if you can!.
On December 12, 2003, for the second time in three years, the fuel pump on our Jeep failed. In discussing the failure with two different mechanics and then with our local Jeep dealer, I was advised that Jeep had determined that the gas tank for this vehicle is subject to corrosion whereby minute particles float in the tank and can travel into the fuel pump (the filter that Jeep puts in these cars is not designed to trap these small particles) causing the fuel pump to freeze. I was advised by the Jeep dealership that a TSB was issued in 1997 regarding this failure (I believe it is TSB 140697). I note that there are at least 42 reports of similar problems on your website. This is a safety problem that Jeep has refused to acknowledge or take any responsibility for.
I have a 1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee laredo 4x4 which has had 5 fuel pump modules and one gas tank replaced since 08. 10. 2000. The vehicle is in need of another fuel pump module. The dealers have difficulty in replicating the condition. The fuel gauge is providing false readings; typically giving an empty tank reading when full, 3/4 full or 3/4 empty. I have heard the same complaint from numerous other Grand Cherokee owners. I would think the maker/dealer would have spotted a trend by now or is overlooking it because of the cost involved with finding a new vendor. All receipt copies of work performed concerning this matter are intact.
Three fuel pumps have failed in three years. We hear the paint chips in the fuel tank and causes clogs the fuel pump and ruins them ($875. 00 for each fuel pump).
I own a 1996 grand Jeep cherokee, have went though 4 fuel pumps in 4 months, now they say its a defect in the gas tank, its erroding inside which causes the fuel pump to sieize up,I now have to replace the gas tank at the cost of 402. 00. I have been standed, and now am concerned what if I'm in a accident(rear end) if my tank is erroding isn't they a bigger chance of it exploding? I feel that daimler should replace the defected gas tanks,I know just in my area there are at least 4 other with the same problem. How many of us are riding around with defected gas tanks?.
The gas tank is made of plastic which clogs the fuel pumps. Consumer states the vehicle has left her stranded three times. Consumer contacted the dealer. Consumer was told the that it was the gas she was using.
Consumer stated that while driving at any speed and without warning the fuel pump failed. Dealer notified. Ts.
Moisture and bacteria gets into the fuel pump lines which causes the fuel to clog up the lines and damage the fuel pump. This result in the vehicle cutting of will driving. Ts.
When adding gas pump does not stop where it should, gas keeps leaking out all over the road. Consumer states this is very unsafe. Dealer has been contacted.
Fuel pump fails due to faulty fuel tank. Jeep dealer admits faulty tanks in '96 Grand Cherokees, yet there is no recall. Expensive and dangerous problem since the car simply shuts down and becomes inoperable. Please investigate and enforce a recall on Chrysler. There are numerous complaints!.
Upon starting vehicle will not start. Consumer took vehicle to a ceritified mechanic, and he stated that it was fuel pump. Please provide any further information.
Fuel pump continues to fail without warning or indications.
Fuel pump/gas tank/computer all need to be replaced as a result of deterioration of the gas tank lining. Fuel pump overheated, causing computer to malfunction and eventually break. How many people does it take to lose a ton of money because of a defective product that could be dangerous while driving to issue a recall.
Fuel pump failed in March 2001 and in oct 2001, dealers believes fuel tank is decompsing, causing fuel pump to fail, replacing fuel tank.
This is a repeat submission, the first one was submitted on November 22, 2001. Five year old car with less than 25,000 miles would not start. Dealer replaced fuel pump at cost of $800 to consumer. One monthe and 300 miles later same problem occurred with additional need to repolace fuel tank. Two letters to Chrysler have gone unanswered. In addition to a costly engine failure, safety could be a problem if pump failure happened on the highway. I shudder to think aboput this failure taking place on the capital beltway.

I had heard that the 1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee had numerous problems with its fuel pump. Now I am finding out that there is a costly problem, as well as a potentially dangerous one with mine. One month ago I had to replaced the fuel pump, because the car would not start. Now one month later, the new fuel pump has gone bad and both it and the fuel tank have to be replaced. $800 the first and perhaps a $1000 or more the second time. Can't someone direct Chrysler to recall the 1996 jepp Grand Cherokee to correct this problem? letters to Chrysler do not even bring abvout a response.
Fuel pump failed. Dealer stated that faulty fuel tank liner disintegrated causing the pump to clog and fail. Vehicle has no damage. Manufacturer should cover replacement. Fuel tanks should not fail. Estimate cost of repairs for fuel tank and pump is $1000. 00.
A private mechanic determined that interior of fuel tank corroded which eventually caused a failure of fuel pump. .
According to my mechanic, Chrysler is aware of the problem with the fuel pump in the 1996 and 1997 models Grand Cherokee. I am very disturbed that knowing this problem exits, the company still charges over $600 for the part. Currently, I am a first year medical student. On all 3 occasions that the car would not start, I had major exams to get to. Not only does this jeopardize my academic career, but also disrupts my focus and concentration overall. For these reasons, I plan to get rid of this vehicle and have lost any faith I had previously in owning an american-made vehicle.
The fuel pump failed because the fuel tank liner was beginning to come apart and parts of the liner were clogging the fuel pump causing it to fail. Could this liner/fuel bladder failure possibly result in serious fire or injury/death because of failure?.
When trying to start vehicle it would not start. Took vehicle to dealer, and dealer indicated it needed a fuel pump. Please add VIN.
Since 1998 I have had numerous problems with my Jeep stranding me due to a fuel pump failure. I had my Jeep towed now 5 times for this problem. When the dealer finally gets the time, a day or two later the Jeep would start. Then again in two weeks the same problem would occur. And they tell me that there is nothing wrong with it. Now just recently it again has done the same thing and the mechanic told me it is the fuel pump again. I have read numerous other complaints concerning the same issue, and was wondering if you could please help me with this problem. It is really bad when you have to be afraid to take a trip with a vehicle you don't even know if you can rely on. Please get back to me and let me know what steps I can take in resolving this problem.
Vehicle would not start. Towed to dealer, replaced failed fuel pump. On 15 June, 2001 vehicle again did not start. Dealer replaced failed fuel pump. Second fuel pump lasted 25 miles before it too failed. Dealer stated it was a known problem with Chrysler. At times vehicle will not move when put in gear.
Technician informed consumer that wire on fuel pump melted down. It could have started a fire within fuel pump. Dealer contacted. Feel free to provide any further information.
Fuel pump failed /hard to start /$800. 00 to replace is a joke please help!!!!!!.
Jeep is only 5 years old when fuel pump was replaced, a/c is draining water inside the passesnger, right rear, carpet.
I was stranded due to fuel pump failure. Dealer said this is due to faulty manufacture of fuel tanks in 1996 Jeep Grand Cherokees and I must replace fuel pump and tank. Dealer will not cover my $1,200. Expense plus towing costs. I have been without my car for 1 week so far. . . It is estimated to be another two weeks until the fuel tank arrives from back order. Apparently it is on back order because the part has to be replaced for so many others. Chrysler does not want to issue a recall because it is costly, but it is the right thing to do. A recall needs to be issued. Faulty manufacture should be covered by the manufacturer.
Had problem with fuel pump failing due to faulty fuel tank. . . Because of this failure vehciles lose fuel to engine and vehicle shuts down(off) no power. . . If on a highway vehicle could shut down and driver and passengers are in danger.
Sending unit of fuel system fails now when fuel reaches 1/4 of tank; Jeep dealer is aware of the problem; a number of instances have been reported; Chrysler however has not issued a recall. Nhtsa has issued a recall on 1997 Jeep Grand Cherokees for this exact same problem. Recall should extend over to 1996 models as well.
Replaced 4 fuel pumps in 5 weeks. Occurs after parking and leaving vehicle. Won't restart after parking. Told I need to replace gas tank. Problem got increasingly worse. 1st replacement-3 weeks, 2nd-6 days, 3rd-4 days.

Vehicle had five fuel pumps replaced, 3 by an independent repair shop, and 2 by dealer. All parts were from the dealer auto parts. Manufacturer notified, and informed consumer that problem may hav e occurred from contamination in fuel tank which needed to be replaced. Feel free to provide any further details on this matter.
