1 Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 08/21/2010

Every time I fill up my 96 Jeep Grand Cherokee laredo at a gas station I need to pump it in slowly and manually. The nozzle, if set on high or low immediately clicks off. If it does not shut off, it spews fuel out of the filler. This has been an ongoing problem for the past 2 years. This happens regardless of how much fuel is in the tank before I start the filling process. Pumping the fuel myself is getting old. I live in NJ where the customer is technically not allowed to do this as our stations are full service and this must be done by an attendant. Fortunately, I go to the same station and they are used to me doing it myself. Otherwise the attendant has to babysit the nozzle and pump it in slower than the slow setting. I have tried other brand gas stations and still have the overflow problem.

2 Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 07/02/2005

The consumer states that July 2, 2005 he was driving 20 mph and the gas tank fell off of the vehicle. The police and fire department came to the scene and the fire department filed a incident report #4403-05 with the sioux falls fd. The vehicle was towed to an automotive service where he did business. The rear passenger strap rusted through and because of the weight of the tank the other strap rusted as well. The straps have been replaced. He still has one of these straps. There is a Jeep file number 13747938. Jeep was not compensating due to age and miles on the vehicle. The gas tank was punctured after it fell off. The vehicle has been maintained and there have been no accidents. The consumer bought the vehicle from his son who originally leased it from baxter Jeep in omaha, ne.

3 Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 04/20/2004

Engine did not run due to fuel tank coating coming off. This coating is there to provide added assurance that there be no fuel leak (and a fire) if the plastic wall of the tank leaks (on its own or after a crash). Thus there is a fire safety hazard. The manufacturer and dealer will not replace the tank (even after 3 recurances of the engne running problem, due to the coating coming off the tank wall and clogging the fuel filter and - in 1 case - even the fuel pump). They, instead, flush the tank (removing even more coating) and re-instal it. I am now using a tank with probably very little fire-protection coating. I feel this is a huge safety problem.

7 Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 11/25/2002

Fuel pump failed while parked. Pump replaced with oem part. Failed 3 days later after driving about 30 miles. Mechanic reports that gas tank was clean and no problems appeared. Only major brand gasoline has been used in this vehicle. A recall should be issued on this problem as it could cause a serious accident if the engine stalled due to fuel failure. In addition this appears to be a manufactures related problem. This recurring problem also causes and corrided of confidence in the vehicle and will relate to a decrease in this vehicles popularity. Dt.

Failure Date: 10/19/2001

I had heard that the 1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee had numerous problems with its fuel pump. Now I am finding out that there is a costly problem, as well as a potentially dangerous one with mine. One month ago I had to replaced the fuel pump, because the car would not start. Now one month later, the new fuel pump has gone bad and both it and the fuel tank have to be replaced. $800 the first and perhaps a $1000 or more the second time. Can't someone direct Chrysler to recall the 1996 jepp Grand Cherokee to correct this problem? letters to Chrysler do not even bring abvout a response.

The hptp fuel tank cause four fuel pumps to be replaced in five weeks. Chrysler customer service is aware of the delamination problem which causes particles to clog the filter and increase pressure causing the pumps to fail. Chrysler customer service reported that the incident count didn't justify a recall. The cost of repairs to date is approximately $900. 00.

19 Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 06/15/2001

The plastic gas tank in the 1996 Jeep cherokee appears to deform due to aging and plastic "creep" so that the seal around the fuel pump module leaks. Often the leak is severe. My cherokee leaked several gallons when I attempted to fill the tank. Replacement of gaskets, etc. , does not repair the problem. I discovered that there have apparently been a large number of recent failures of this type, as replacement tanks are on long backorder. The leak is a fire hazard.

20 Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 04/25/2001

Problem with sludge build up in fuel tank. Dealer contacted. Feel free to provide any further information.

21 Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 02/01/2001

I was stranded due to fuel pump failure. Dealer said this is due to faulty manufacture of fuel tanks in 1996 Jeep Grand Cherokees and I must replace fuel pump and tank. Dealer will not cover my $1,200. Expense plus towing costs. I have been without my car for 1 week so far. . . It is estimated to be another two weeks until the fuel tank arrives from back order. Apparently it is on back order because the part has to be replaced for so many others. Chrysler does not want to issue a recall because it is costly, but it is the right thing to do. A recall needs to be issued. Faulty manufacture should be covered by the manufacturer.

24 Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 11/24/2000

Car went into reverse when parked "park" reversed into a tree down the driveway at about 10 mph. There was extensive damage to the rear end. Then, two months later, I was parked in park in front of our farm gate, motor running, when I hopped out to get the mail from the box across the lane. As I started to leave the open door, the car started to move from the stopped position in reverse. I ran alongside and jumped back it and stomped on the brake. It was this time that I looked at the gear shift and noted that it had moved from the park position to a place just above the r for reverse but indeed was in reverse! my body shop person had informed me of another Jeep owner who was pinned against his garage door when his Jeep Grand Cherokee went from park into reverse. I can get him to get in touch with this organization. The dealers response to me was "I propbably did not have it in gear properly and did I have the parking brake on?" believe me when I say. . . . . I sure put it on now and check it double but sure don't trust it enough to idle in park. . . . . . Although after driving for 35 years I have never had the problem with other cars or trucks! the fuel pump had evidently been a problem for them as the dealer said that there have been several failures "but no recall" the pump has to be replaced by factory part at $500 plus dollars with an additional $700. 00 for labor to install "and even then, we can't guarantee it but for 6 months! thanks to the la times for the article on the Jeep reverse problem and I will bet you that there are more than a "small' number of complaints regarding this issue.

26 Tank Assembly problem

At 40000 miles vehicle was at a stop in park, consumer then put vehicle in reverse, and vehicle did not move. Less than a minute later, vehicle suddenly went backward. Since then, this happened at least 4 more times, also, once vehicle was put in drive from park, and it took about a minute before vehicle lurched forward. Gear selector also showed it was in drive. Dealer could not remedy. Fuel pump assembly and fuel tank was replaced, vehicle would crank, but would not start.
