11 problems related to manifold/header/muffler/tail pipe have been reported for the 1997 Jeep Grand Cherokee. The most recently reported issues are listed below.
My Jeep Grand Cherokee has been sputtering, stalling when stopped and when driving, backfires blown apart 2 mufflers. It will not show a check light or give an error code when hooked up to a computer. Have researched online and found several people with same issue. Have done as they have and replaced nearly every sensor. Have yet to replace pcm/ecm. Don't know if this will fix due to some online have and still having the same issue. Like the people online I have taken it to different mechanics, none of which could duplicate or find a problem. Surprised with as many people having this issue Jeep hasn't resolved this. I think dealerships are aware of this issue because some people online have traded their Jeeps in and gotten very little towards trade-in.
Consumer noticed a chirping noise coming from the front wheels that disappeared when the brakes were applied. The dealer was unable to correct the problem the consumer was referring to. The consumer had a list of problems that needed to be corrected on the vehicle and they were: rotors and pads front and rear, emergency brake shoes, wiper blades, muffler and tail pipe, oil dip dip stick, right axle boot, emergency brake pivot, the back glass needed to be adjusted, the fuel pump module was replaced, the rear differential bearings were replaced. The consumer was told by customer service there were 2 outstanding recalls on the vehicle and the problem she was describing sounded as though it was related to one of the recalls.
Exhaust manifold broke and engine caught on fire. Dealer notified.
Exhaust manifold cracked. As a result oil leaks into the engine compartment. Consumer is concerned that the vehicle will catch on fire.
My 1997 Jeep Grand Cherokee laredo has had a cracked exhaust manifold for some time now. The dealership knows the price for one off the top of their head without looking it up. Dust or water can get in there and create engine failure, it can also cause the engine to get to hot and cause a fire. Carbon monoxide leaks into the cabin when the windows are up and the heater is on.
The intake manifold failed.
Rear axle bearings replaced twice now. Brake rotor warpage a direct result of caliper design. Replaced rotors with after market and still warped. Replaced calipers with after market and needed $115. 00 repairs to rotors that had 8000 miles on them. Engine oil leak and odor from manifold gasket leak at front og engine. Door check roller on drivers door broke off completely. May not be a warranty repair. Will invoke lemon law if rear bearings fail another time. Chrysler built a real piece of garbage!!!.
Cracked exhaust manifold because of poor support (manufacturer problem).
I have taken my vehicle to 3 different places to get estimates on what it will cost me to have it fixed. All 3 of them stated to me that they are always fixing this problems on the Jeeps. That where the pipes coming out of the manifold start to split is where it is cracking. That it is a weak spot. One of the places I took it to showed me. He had 3 different manifolds there and showed me and all 3 of them were cracked in the same spot as mine. He used to work for Chrysler and said that they had even new ones coming back with the same problem in the same spot. If there are that many defects, shouldn't they have to redo the design or something to make them last. These are stainless steel pipes and should not be that easy to crack.
Exhaust pipe bent & rubbed against the plastic gas tank which caused a hole that allowed a leak. Took to dealer & was informed owner needs metal piece between tank & exhaust. Manufacturer not taking responsibility of financial replacement. Consumer was never made aware of the skip plate option, requesting reimbursment. Transmission has a pause when upshifting from 2 to 3, when in 4wd, the left wheel grinds when turning. The right front power lock made a grinding noise when power door locks were actuated, dealer installed new door latch assembly. Steering wheel was not centered, causing vehicle to drift to the left while driving.
Consumer stated that flames came out of the broken exhaust manifold. Consumer is concerned that this may cause a fire, consumer replaced the exhaust. Also exhaust specialist told him that many other cherokees have same problem.
