Axle Shaft problems of the 1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Three problems related to axle shaft have been reported for the 1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee. The most recently reported issues are listed below.

1 Axle Shaft problem

Failure Date: 06/01/2000

Rear differential makes noise. Dealer advised that it was due to "road noise, " but it feels that tires are about to fall off. Consumer states this has been an ongoing problem.

2 Axle Shaft problem

Failure Date: 03/15/2000

Carrier bearings in rear diff. Had peices missing when removed and were replaced with new at owners expense.

3 Axle Shaft problem

Failure Date: 09/22/1998

Rear axle bearing failed; front axle is now producing same vibration and noise similar to rear component; dip stick installation wrong; and engine hesitation and sluggish acceleration when cold.
