Transmission Noise problems of the 1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Four problems related to transmission noise have been reported for the 1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee. The most recently reported issues are listed below.

1 Transmission Noise problem

Failure Date: 08/20/2008

It has happened a few times the lever in the gas tank that lets the gas gauge know how much gas is in it sticks when it says a quarter tank it is actually completely empty. This has left myself and my two babies left to walk and get pushed to a gas station. The other complaint is that the transmission makes a really load whining noise when overdrive is off.

2 Transmission Noise problem

Failure Date: 04/04/2007

There is a very loud whining noise that come from the transmission.

3 Transmission Noise problem

Failure Date: 07/25/2001

The transmission in my Jeep began making noises when decelerating. The dealer found bearing parts, and bearing casings in the transmission pan, and told me the transmission needs to be replaced. This isn't necessarily a safety issue, but I see so many reports of 1998 Jeep transmission problems, how do I know mine is not defective as well ? I have consulted an independant transmission specialist. His opinion states that this trasnmission should not have failed like this with at 43000 miles.

4 Transmission Noise problem

Failure Date: 06/26/1998

Overdrive bearings and valve body assembly failed causing noise in transmission unit. Mjs.
